What fascinates me

When looking closer at our environment, one is able to discover countless fascinating details. Such as traces of people, manufacturing techniques and the conditions things were made under. Observing such trace enables us to understand and develop appropriate solutions. A conscious notion of our environment and how we experience it has always been essential for my work. However, I do not just want to observe my surroundings but shape it, add something new, and create something people are benefitting from. Curiosity and lots of fun make me discover new perspectives and develop ideas again and again.

Particularly the connection between the human and its build environment is important for myself. Thus, a sustainable design does not just mean effectivity in energy consumption and use of space. Besides a well thought through construction, it is a user orientated and appropriate design that makes a building really sustainable.

While studying I have had several opportunities to find new perspectives. Studying in Denmark, working in Chile, as well as being on a construction site in Mexico showed

me how different approaches can be, according to their context. These experiences helped me working on a wide range of projects; Everything from designing and building furniture, being involved in big and small housing and infrastructure projects like the new subway station at “Rotes Rathaus”, up to developing master plans. Especially important for me was being part of the “Mexico Project” of the TU-Berlin. In this project students are designing and organising everything that is necessary to realize a housing project during the semester break. Furthermore, I have been able to gain more precious knowledge working in Chile for Pezo von Ellrichshausen. Now, as an employed architect in Berlin I participate in projects from phase 0 to 5.

This is how I learned many important things not just about architecture but about myself. I have learned to get the best out of different approaches to complement my own perspective and combine this with technical demands.

“Isla Mocha”, an isolated island off the Chilean shore, offers ideal conditions for the project. I was aiming for a standardised system that appears differently to everybody. By conscious irritations the user is encouraged to remember certain situations. Thereby, the user is demanded to create his or her own personal mental map to identify with it. Since the building consists of several different layers, it can be used in many different ways depending on external conditions as well as personal habits. Thus, new ways to use the building appear and develop constantly. Personal preferences become a part of the system and let it appear in a different way to each of its users. A flexibility that only happens in your mind, sustainable, efficient, and personal.

Being 40 kilometres off the Chilean shore allows the island a remoteness that enables focused work. The project is meant to provide working and living space for artists. While staying in a community for a limited time in order to test ideas, one can find everything necessary. Such as a workshop, library community spaces, as well as a private living unit. Located on a clearance with an incredible view over the ocean the conditions of the site were included in the building structure. Still not far from the Chilean hub, Santiago, Valparaiso, and Concepcion, the island is located close to the pulse of the country.

A close look at grown and planed cities has shown that the only way to combine the wanted flexibility and economy is to create a mental flexibility. A personal building experience will be the key of this project. Spatial contradictions, several possibilities of circulation and different building zones encourage the user to identify with the building. Although the building is based on a grid, it has the ability to surprise the user. Every user is supposed to create a personal mental map which reflects the personal preferences and experiences.

A possible mental map of Manhattan30+1 experimenting with association:How connections are made in ones mind? One approach to visualize the confrontation of immediate decisions within a systematic context.

To ensure an intense connection between user and building, it consist of different areas. Depending on individual preferences users can chose to be in a more or less public area, as well as the way how to use the building. Three different possibilities of circulation enable the user to create routes and find his or her favourite places. At the same time it allows the building to react to a changing context. For instance adaptations in height are as possible as a orientation towards a certain view.

Different building zones make it possible to purposeful stay in a community area or private area.

External circulation:

Depending on the weather conditions, it is possible to walk through the building independently from its own circulation.

Internal Circulation:

Every building part has its own internal circulation. With a thermal barrier the user is protected and enable to act independently from any outer weather condition.

Semi internal circulation:

Connecting roofs between the different building areas allow a rainproof circulation.

The standardised units allow a cost efficient production and a short building process. Nevertheless, the structure of the building is able to be used in a flexible way. In spite of its standardisation the building offers its user a versatile and multi- layered individual experience. The combination of standardisation and individual preferences may offer solutions for the growing gap between human needs and ecological demands.

Mexico ProjectWithin two month this project was build for the charitable women organization Naxii. Designed and organized during the semester, the project was build withing six weeks during the semester break. The design process included detailed planning, research of local building traditions and materials, organization of travel documents and funding, as well as construction site management. The site is located 20 minutes walking distance from the small mountain village San Jeronimo Tecoatl.

According to our research of local building traditions, the available materials and site conditions, dried adobe bricks where chosen to build two buildings and a traditional patio. The kitchen building enables the women to offer cooking courses, while the community space in the second building enables larger meetings. The difference in height was bridged with a set of big steps which can work as an extension of the meeting space.

Since everything was build by the students themselves there was a lot of knowledge to be learned. However we were able to stick to the schedule and finish the project in time. The collected impressions during the time in Mexico and particularly the contact with the locals belong to the most fascinating experiences of my life so far.

This hut is designed to be a counter part to urban life. As a part of a necessary mental journey from the city to the countryside, this building is the last part of it. Integrating traces of its environment and continuing the mental journey beginning with the narrow entrance until opening towards the sea, this hut is a place for letting the soul stray. Materials as well as the furniture and location are part of the concept. Reachable by foot from the city centre one has enough time to leave the urban life behind. Equipped with the most necessary a pleasant stay is guaranteed.

In order to design a foldable chair that does not appear like one, every element was activated as a structural element. To ensure a fast and easy dissembling, back and seat are connected by a push fitting, which is secured by wing screws. Hence, no tools are necessary to dissemble the chair within seconds. Nevertheless Lars appears like a proper chair, not like a foldable chair and saves valuable storage space.

Designed to create little recreation areas in bigger spaces, this sofa is inspired by train compartments. With its high back and lateral walls it is like a shell. An additional stool can either function as a leg rest, table or additional arm rest. Different kinds of fabric support the difference of the inner and outer shell. The soft and warm inner fabric is a clear contrast to the strong grey outer part.

Painting is the perfect medium to test ideas. Conceptual approaches as well as pure fun finds its way on my canvases. In this manner some more and some less successful paintings have been produced. Particularly oil painting is a sturdy technic that allows me to let my mind spin. With its slow drying and rich colours and techniques it has become an important part of my everyday life.
