Dear Collector, Welcome to our first bulletin for 2012, featuring two issues and the 2011 Year book. Firstly we have a $4. Overprint of the Seabird .10c stamp (from the 2005 Definitive part 1 series). This has been carried out to meet with Post Office requirements, as our stocks for $4. stamps were depleted. The stamp features the Red Tailed Tropic Bird. This is a beautiful and elegant bird that will often nest at the base of a Norfolk Pine tree. When nesting it is possible to observe the birds from a close distance. ‘Iconic Activities’ is issue number 2, which is a peel and stick stamp edition in the map shape of Norfolk Island. The ‘Iconic Activities’ stamp depicts the gathering of traditional island food (Norfolk word: wettles). The stamp depicts: collecting ‘Hi-hi’s’ (periwinkles) and Whale Bird Egg, and also rock fishing. Today , these are considered ‘iconic activities’, though they were once a vital food source method. ‘We go rumma des night’ is the Norfolk way of saying ‘let’s go pick hi-hi’s tonight’. Hi-hi’s are an island delicacy and are best collected at low tide at night when the rocks are cool. Many islanders have their favourite place to collect them from and some are very secretive about it and may never reveal their ‘spot’ so to speak. Whale Bird Egg collecting is these days restricted to just 6 weeks per year and they may only be collected from certain areas on Philip Island. Eaten boiled or in an omelette are the most popular ways to enjoy these eggs. The beautiful colours of Phillip Island landscape forms the background for this stamp. Many families take their children to fish from the safer reefs and rocks at low tide and then cook the fish up at the beach to eat. Bamboo poles are a favourite rock fishing rod amongst the islanders, and it is just lovely to see a family heading off for the day with their bamboo rods and frypan in hand. The more adventurous local fisherman use ropes to climb down cliffs to get to their favourite fishing spots, whilst their families anxiously wait at home for them to come back safely and hopefully with dinner. Many of the islands scenic cliff tops, together with any of the is- land’s beaches are popular spots for fish fries and barbecues and are a favourite way for locals and visitors alike to enjoy an evening meal and a magnificent sunset. We hope you enjoy our first stamps issues for this year.
