Philadelphia VIP promotes equal justice for the poor by providing civil

legal services not otherwise available, collaborating with other legal services

organizations, and promoting a culture of volunteerism by educating and exposing

attorneys and law students to issues of poverty.

Philadelphia VIP is dedicated to leveling the playing field

for low-income Philadelphians in our civil justice system.

For more than three decades, VIP has

Dear Friends of VIP, We are pleased to share Philadelphia VIP’s 2015 Annual Report with you, our friends and partners. Our complete audited financial statements are also available at www.phillyvip.org. We are deeply proud of what VIP has accomplished this year but also recognize the challenges before us. To meet those challenges, VIP launched several new initiatives in 2015 while sharpening its focus on existing programs. VIP continually evaluates, retools, and plans its programs to ensure we are serving clients as efficiently and effectively as possible. We also know that to meet those challenges, we must be responsible stewards of the investments you all have made in our work. This report is an example of our commitment to transparency in both our programs and our finances. In 2015, VIP’s pro bono attorneys and professional staff assisted with 1,599 civil

cases for 3,199 individuals and families who were unable to afford attorneys.

When her mother died, Robin inherited her

family home. Since then, she has made it her

own, living there with her two daughters and

their four children. Robin lost her job shortly after

her mother’s death and fell behind on the

mortgage payments. After going to mortgage

foreclosure court, Robin found Philadelphia VIP

and was paired with volunteer attorney Christina

Donato Saler of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.

Christina walked Robin through each step of the

foreclosure process. Ultimately, Christina was

able to save Robin’s home and negotiated

manageable payments. Today, Robin enjoys her

home with her family in their close-knit

neighborhood.

Landlord/Tenant (Private and Public Housing) | Mortgage Foreclosure |

Tangled Title (Probate, Quiet Title, and Deed Transfer)

VIP staff and volunteers support Philadelphians, who are trying to save their homes,

through the Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Program. Each week,

volunteers assist with intake and attorneys provide ongoing and emergency

representation to clients. This program provides a voice in court for unrepresented

borrowers and demystifies the mortgage foreclosure process for those in need.

VIP’s participation in this program has helped hundreds of Philadelphians stay in

their homes.

Years ago, Mariame created a small cleaning

business to support herself. One tax season, an

unscrupulous tax preparer took advantage of her

trust and overstated her withholdings. Her tax

problems grew until she could no longer keep up

with IRS payments. That’s when she came to

Philadelphia VIP. She was matched with Benjamin

Bolas of Dilworth Paxson LLP. Together, Mariame

and Benjamin put together all of the paperwork

they needed for the IRS. Benjamin negotiated the

penalty down from over $12,000 to just $800,

which Mariame immediately paid. Today, Mariame

can move forward with her life as a full-time

student and mother of three children without her

debt burden. She is set to begin her bachelor’s

degree in nursing on a scholarship this year.

In 2015, VIP helped create a debt conciliation pilot project designed to bring consumers and

creditors together to resolve outstanding debts. VIP and Community Legal Services trained

volunteer attorneys who then provided representation in cases that had been chosen for the

pilot program. In many cases, volunteers were able to get cases dismissed or return

favorable payment plans for their clients. Ultimately, this partnership between VIP, CLS,

Philadelphia Municipal Court, and the creditors’ bar empowered clients to avoid the harsh

penalties associated with debt cases.

Name Change | Wills and Estate Planning

When Joseph and his wife finalized their divorce,

they agreed on everything except how to share

custody of their six year old son, Isaiah. At first,

Joseph and his ex-wife split Isaiah’s time evenly

between them. However, when Joseph’s ex-wife

began keeping Isaiah from him, Joseph wanted

equal time as a parent.

After contacting VIP, Joseph was paired with

volunteer attorney Maria Testa of Testa &

Pagnanelli. Maria recommended that Joseph

request a formalized custody agreement. While

Joseph was nervous about a legal fight with his ex-

wife, Maria prepared Joseph for his court date and

negotiated a shared physical and legal custody

agreement. Today, Joseph is a fully engaged dad.

In December 2015, VIP hosted its first Divorce Clinic in partnership with Philadelphia Legal

Assistance, Cozen O’Connor, and the ACE Group (now Chubb). The clinic offered a venue

where volunteers could offer advice to clients on how to file paperwork to obtain a divorce.

The program first offered training to the volunteer attorneys from Cozen and ACE about

how to counsel clients through the divorce process. Next, teams of attorneys met with

clients for 90 minutes and walked them through the necessary steps to obtain a divorce.

The clients were then invited to attend a follow-up clinic in 2016 to continue working on

their divorces.

Nonprofit Organizations and Small Business Assistance

On July 30, 2015, VIP held a nonprofit legal assessment clinic at the Free Library of Philadelphia. This clinic brought together volunteer attorneys, experts, and nonprofit organizations to work on legal issues facing the nonprofits. Volunteers first attended a seminar which trained them on a nonprofit assessment checklist that would ensure a strong legal foundation for new organizations. After the training, volunteers met with representatives of each nonprofit organization to provide counsel and advice.

Just a year old, Brewerytown Beats is a

colorful, welcoming record store on Girard

Avenue. Owner Max Ochester had

collected records in his basement for years

before deciding to share his passion for

music with his neighborhood.

Max came to Philadelphia VIP for business

law help, where he was matched with

Robert Powers, an associate at Morgan

Lewis & Bockius LLP. With the help of

Robert and supervising attorney Jeffrey

Bodle, Max incorporated his business so

that it can grow and be an active part of

the Brewerytown neighborhood.

Former VIP Board President Matthew Lee received the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network’s Excellence Award for his work in the area of civil forfeiture.

Brittany Daniels, VIP’s former Augustinian Volunteer and legal intern, won the Philadelphia Bar Association Public Interest Section’s Law Student Award, given to law students who demonstrate a commitment to public service.

The ACE Group (now Chubb), a CCC member corporation, was honored by the Philadelphia Bar Foundation for their outstanding pro bono service.

The Philadelphia Association of Paralegals presented their annual Pro Bono Award to VIP volunteer Taryn Edmonds.

VIP Board Member Megan Watson was awarded the Pro Bono Publico Award by the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

Robert Scott, Chair of VIP’s Corporate Counsel Collaborative, received the National Public Service Award from the American Bar Association Business Law Section.

Each month, we honor a dedicated volunteer who provides outstanding pro bono legal services to low-income families in Philadelphia. We applaud our 2015 Volunteers of the Month for providing quality

legal assistance to those in need.

VIP held its annual Taste for Justice fundraiser on October 5,

2015 at the Reading Terminal Market. Guests enjoyed a butter

tasting from head chef George Sabatino of Aldine, a cheese

selection from Valley Shepherd Creamery, and a brandy tasting

from Western Grace Brandy. The fundraiser also included a

successful silent auction.

On June 12, 2015, Philadelphia VIP held its 20th annual

Summer Pro Bono Program. This program teaches law

students the importance of pro bono service and

introduces them to volunteering with VIP. Law students

attended a lunch with members of the judiciary and

listened to a panel of VIP volunteers and a client speak

about their experiences.

2015 marked the launch of VIP’s Corporate Counsel

Collaborative, which brings corporate counsel and law firms

from around the Philadelphia area together to work on VIP

cases. This project is designed to increase pro bono

participation by corporate counsel and develop relationships

between VIP volunteers while serving more clients

throughout the city.

VIP’s Managing Attorney, Ourania Papademetriou, was

elected to the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in

November of 2015. Rainy was sworn in on

January 21, 2016 and is currently serving on

Philadelphia’s Family Court.

The issue of civil forfeiture gained significant public

attention throughout 2015. The Philadelphia Daily News

featured the issue by highlighting the work of a VIP

attorney with her client, whose home was seized by the

city. Additionally, former VIP Board President Matt Lee

was recognized for his civil forfeiture work by the

Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
