Module Syllabus

Module Name: Fundamentals of Nursing Module Number: 910112 Level: 1st year Credit Hours: 3 credit hours Prerequisite / Co-Requisite:511241 Aims (Module Purpose): This course focuses on the theoretical knowledge and concurrent laboratory experiences to develop cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills that will help nursing students to provide basic nursing care. Definitions of Nursing and scope of nursing will be emphasized. Introduction to the role of the professional nurse and the relationship of nursing to nursing history will be emphasized. An overview of health care delivery models with emphasis on professional nursing role. It also focuses on concepts of health, wellness and well-being. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are emphasized. it is considered as a faculty requirement module for first year nursing students. Teaching Methods: – Lecture, discussion.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this course, students will be able to: ∗ Discuss the influences of nursing history as an applied science. ∗ Identify the roles and functions of the professional nurse. ∗ Define health/illness and the health illness continuum. ∗ Identify methods of health promotion. ∗ Discuss concepts of health, wellness and well-being. ∗ Acquire the scientific and theoretical basis of a professional nurse as regards vital signs,

hygienic care of the patient and environment, wound care, catheterization, safety measures giving medications, promotion of patient mobility, using body mechanics and patient mobility, elimination problems and basic life support.

∗ Provide first aid measures.

Types of illness, effect of illness, health promotion. (5) Vital signs. (6) Temperature, pulse, respiration, Blood pressure. (7) Hygienic care of the patient and Environment. (8) Wound care, cold and hot applications. (9) Promotion of mobility, body mechanics. (10) Comfort, rest and sleep. (11) Safety measures. (12) Medical and surgical asepsis. (13) Giving medications. (14) Altered bowel elimination, catheterization. (15) Introduction to 1st aid. (16) Basic life support.

* Make-up exams will be offered for valid reasons only with consent of the Dean. Make-up exams may be different from regular exams in content and format. Attendance Policy: Lecture attendance is mandatory. Student is allowed maximally 15% absentia of the total module hours. More than this percentage, student with an excuse will be drawn from the module. Otherwise, student will be deprived from the module with zero mark assigned.
