The Faces of Phi Delta Phi Leaders, Lawyers & Legends

For over 140 years, Phi Delta Phi has upheld ethics in our profession. To capture this im-portant legacy, we created the first commemorative volume preserving the fraternity’s rich history and profiling Phi Delta Phis who have been outstanding “Friends of Justice and Wisdom.”

This limited edition volume is filled with fascinating anec-dotes about famous PDPs and richly endowed with rare his-torical photographs from our archives in Washington, D.C. chronicling the evolution of Phi Delta Phi from its early days in Ann Arbor to its position today as the world’s preeminent legal fraternity.

Phi Delta Phi Annie Miller Devoy (Tiedeman ’94) super-vised the project which also includes an extensive member directory on CD.

Student delegates from the Inns, sitting in Convention in August 2009, voted to implement a new fund raising pro-gram to be known as “Five for Phi”. Simply put, it asks all Phi Delta Phis to contribute financially to the Fraternity in any amount that contains a “5”. It was noted at the Convention, that if every member contributed just $5 to Phi Delta Phi, the Fraternity’s financial picture would be vastly improved. (Unfortunately, over the past few years, Phi Delta Phi has had to reduce the number of scholarships awarded each year due to the depreciation of the Fraternity’s endowment fund.)

When the vote was passed from the floor of the Convention, many students walked up to the podium and contrib-uted money in furtherance of the plan. Many of these same students will graduate with huge student loan debts, but yet they contributed to Phi Delta Phi.

Please follow their lead and contribute something – regardless of the amount – to the Five for Phi campaign. It’s easy and it really helps! And . . . you can do so with a few clicks of the mouse. Simply go to www.phideltaphi.org and click on “Five for Phi Campaign”.

Have you sent in your 2010 Alumni Dues? Perhaps you did not receive our prior request and member-ship card. Perhaps you set it aside to concentrate on the demands of a thriv-ing law practice. Whatever may have happened, we want you to know how much your alumni dues mean to Phi Delta Phi.

Simply put, your financial sup-

port is essential to the vitality of Phi Delta Phi and its programs. With your voluntary alumni dues, we have not only maintained our position as the world’s most prestigious profes-sional law fraternity; we have also expanded our reach and our message is impacting more law students and lawyers than ever before. In the past year, the fraternity chartered its 20th Inn in Mexico - André Hauriou Inn at Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Campus Puebla. And we have recently re-activated Scott Inn at Georgetown University and Bryant Inn at Howard University.

Your Phi Delta Phi membership is a mark of distinction and the part of your résumé that is the most univer-sally admired. Your membership also

allows you to take advantage of dis-count programs from our corporate partners – GEICO, Avis and Budget Car Rental, Bank of America and we are working to add more! To learn more about our partnership programs, visit our website at http://PhiDeltaPhi.org.

If you don’t want the hassle of paying annual dues, please consider Active Life Membership. The bene-fits of Active Life Membership can be found at https://phideltaphi.site-ym.com/?page=ActiveLife where you can also learn which of your Brothers and Sisters have already joined the Active Life Honor Roll. To become an Active Life Member yourself, just contact Headquarters to determine your past alumni dues credit toward the one-time Active Life contribution and let us know how you would like your name to appear on your Certifi-cate of Recognition.

If you haven’t done so already, please take a moment to submit your

alumni dues online today. Thank you for showing your pride in Phi Delta Phi and helping to promote ci-vility and professionalism in the prac-tice of law.

Phi Delta Phi’s new web community was launched about a year ago and allows anyone to look up a name and check if a person is a Phi Delta Phi member or not (note: membership lists are not complete before the 1980’s when member records went from paper lists to computer lists). If a record is marked as Lost it means the person is a member of PDP but we’ve lost contact with them. This happens most often as people move and forget to let us know.

Anyone can check a name but to protect our members’ personal information, only those registered to use the online community are able to find other members in a specific field of law or region for consult or simply find an old classmate. The web community is similar to Facebook or LinkedIn. Members of Phi Delta Phi must actively register to use it – thus the Registered Members notation. Once registered, members can post photos, blogs and résumés and access the Inn pages to learn about meetings, events or utilize the file library an Inn may have set up for outlines. Registered members can also pick and choose which portions of their profile to hide for additional privacy.

Those marked as Non-Members are members of the fraternity that are deceased or have not yet registered to join the web community. These notations change as members update their contact information or registers and change from lost or non-members to registered members. And sadly, when we learn a registered member has passed away, we delete their registered member record and replace it with a non-registered member record.

The web community is still young but as more members register to join, it becomes a powerful networking tool and the best way to stay current on PDP news and events.

Are you Lost, Registered, or a Non-Member?

ANSTEAD (Florida International University) Members of Anstead Inn were up bright and early to participate in the 26th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Miami. Local PDPs participated in the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrate breast cancer survivorship, and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease. Members also joined forces with Jennifer Hill of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center to assist the Wage Theft Coalition by educating employers and employees of labor and wage rights and interviewing low-income clients about their employment status to identify misclassification resulting in wage and benefit loss. BEASLEY (Rutgers School of Law - Newark) This year’s Teddy Bear Immunity campaign raised over $800 for local charity, The Apostle’s House Charity. Of the 114 bears sold, students returned half to be included in the donation to The Apostle’s House where roughly half of those fed and sheltered are children. BURNS (Quinnipiac University ) During the Spring, Burns Inn held a 5K race which raised over $1,600 for the Wounded Warrior Project. The course received rave reviews and will likely become an annual event. CARDOZO (Stetson University) Cardozo Inn raised over $2,000 for Brighter Seasons for Children, a local charity which helps children in Pinellas County who are infected/affected by HIV/AIDS. They sold immunity cards to students for $5 and, in return, professors who participated in the fundraiser did not call on them in class. This was the Inn’s second immunity fundraiser. The first was held last fall and raised over $800. CLAYBERG (University of Montana) No longer a ‘Failing Inn’ of 4 members, Clayberg Inn successful tripled their membership to 15 earlier this year and have attributed their recruitment success to a multi-group sponsored “Court Respectable Attire” fashion show which also served to promote professionalism. Models were members from the sponsoring groups and a few professors wearing clothes from the local thrift store and showed what to wear and what NOT to wear to court. FOSTER (Indiana University - Bloomington) Earlier this year, Foster Inn held their Ethics Week lecture at Bloomington’s award winning Italian Eatery Grazie!

Professor Steele, an expert on legal ethics, led an intimate discussion on the ethical and professional conduct issues surrounding the lawyers who authored the infamous “Torture Memos” during the previous presidential administration. Foster Inn provided complimentary appetizers and snacks. GÓNGORA PIMENTEL (Universidad Contemporanea) On October 29th, Province 29A and Góngora Pimentel Inn of the Contemporary University in Querétaro received a visit from Dr. Genaro David Góngora Pimentel, retired Minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, to dis-cuss his book and lecture on "Organized Crime". KENT (University of Michigan) Kent Inn members reside in the Phid House on campus which is in need of repairs. Current student members have successfully appealed to alumni to raise between $1,200 and $1,500 to repair a broken refrigerator, several leaking pipes and replace a problematic fuse box. There are still a few larger projects they are saving toward and appreciate support from all Phis. Please contact Headquarters if you would like to help. MURPHY (St. Louis University) On October 22nd, Murphy Inn held their Inaugural Date Auction for Autism where dates with law students were auctioned off for donations. Community restaurants and businesses were solicited for prize donations that accompanied the dates. In addition, they were able to get the band Carry the Zero to donate
