Foreword1) Introduction

a. Thishandbookisnottobeconstruedasacontract.ItismeanttoprovideguidanceandinformationabouttheSchoolofPharmacyattheUniversityofKansas.Theinformationprovidedinthisdocumentissubjecttochangeatanytimewithoutnotice.UpdatedversionsofthisdocumentwillbeupdatedontheBlackboardpageofeachgraduatingclass.

b. TheUniversityofKansasSchoolofPharmacyisfullyaccreditedbytheAccreditationCouncilforPharmacyEducation(ACPE).In2014,ACPEgrantedtheSchoolofPharmacyamaximumaccreditationcycleof8yearseffectivethroughJune30,2022.Duringthe2021-2022academicyear,theprogramwillcompletetheACPEre-accreditationprocess.

2) DefiningStatements,Outcomes,andGoals

a. TheSchoolhasarticulatedthefollowingstatementofdistinction:“…becausethediscoveryanddeliveryofeffectivemedicinesenhanceandextendlife.”

b. Ourmissionis:“TheUniversityofKansasSchoolofPharmacyprovidesexceptionaleducationalopportunitiesforprofessional,graduate,andpostgraduatestudents.Throughexemplarycurriculaandprograms,theschoolencouragestheadvancementofpatient-centeredcaretoenhancehealth.Theschoolmaintainsaleadershiproleindevelopinginnovativetechnologiesandpharmaceuticalsandconductingdrugtherapyrelatedresearchinclusiveofbasic,clinical,andadministrativesciencesforthestate,nation,andworld.”

c. Ourvisionis:“TheUniversityofKansasSchoolofPharmacywillimprovethehealthofourstate,itsresidents,andtheworldthroughexcellenceindidactic,experiential,andinterprofessionaleducation,basicandappliedresearch,service,andtheadvancementofallaspectsofpatient-centeredcare.”

d. Oureducationalphilosophywascreatedbythecurriculumcommitteetoreflecttheidealsoutlinedinourmissionandvisionstatements.Thefollowingeducationalphilosophysuccinctlyoutlinesthemajorcategoriesoflearningoutcomesandtheteachingandassessmentmethodsusedtoensureourstudentsachievethelearningoutcomes:“UponcompletionofthePharmDprogramatKU,ourstudentswillhaveastrongfoundationinscienceandwillbepractice-readyforteam-basedcare.Theywillhavetheknowledge,skills,andattitudesneededtodeliverpatient-centeredcareasinterprofessionalteammembers,andwillcontributetotheadvancementoftheprofessionofpharmacy.Ourgraduatesareproficientattranslatingbasicscienceknowledgeintoclinicalapplications;providingcomprehensivepharmacist-deliveredpatient-centeredcare;managingresourcesandsystemseffectivelyandefficiently;andprovidingpopulation-basedhealthcare.Topromoteattainmentofthesegoalsavarietyofeducationalstrategiesareused,includingtraditionalclassroominstruction,casestudies,laboratoryexercises,reflectivewriting,standardizedpatientassessment,smallgroupdiscussion,andpractice-basedexperiences.Ourfacultyroutinelyexplorenovelteachingmethodstofurtheradvancetheeffectivenessofourcurriculum.Throughtheseeducationalstrategies,studentsacquireastrongfoundationinbiomedical,pharmaceutical,social,behavioral,administrative,andclinicalscienceprinciplesandpossesstheabilitytointegrateandapplylearnedinformationwithinourprogramandininterprofessionallearningenvironments.Asstudentsprogressthroughthecurriculum,theytransitionfrombeingadependentlearnertoanactive,self-directed,lifelonglearner.”

e. FollowingcompletionoftheDoctorofPharmacyprogramstudentswillpossesstheeducationaloutcomesarticulatedbytheCenterfortheAdvancementofPharmacyEducation(CAPEoutcomes).Theseareavailableforreviewathttp://www.aacp.org/resources/education/cape/Pages/default.aspxPerCAPE,“theoutcomeswerepurposefullyconstructedaround4broaddomainstoguidetheacademyineducatingpharmacistswhopossess:1)foundationalknowledgethatisintegratedthroughoutpharmacycurricula,2)essentialsforpracticingpharmacyanddeliveringpatient-centeredcare,3)effectiveapproachestopracticeandcare,and4)theabilitytodeveloppersonallyandprofessionally.”

g. Theprogrammaticgoalsbelowareaccomplishedthroughthespecificinitiativesoutlinedinourstrategic

plan.Goalattainmentisroutinelyassessedandevaluatedbykeystakeholdersofourprogram,includingadministration,faculty,staff,students,alumni,andotherrelevantconstituents.

i. Educationalgoals:1. Attractstrongcandidatestoourprofessional,graduate,andpostdoctoralprograms.2. Excellenceindidactic,experiential,andinterprofessionaleducationasevidentbyour

AcademicInformation,Policies,andProcedures3) OverviewoftheDoctorofPharmacy(PharmD)Program

a. ThecurriculumleadingtotheDoctorofPharmacyDegreeiscomprisedof208-credithours.Sixty-eightofthesehoursaretransferredintotheprofessionalschooland140arecompletedintheprofessionalprogram.Twoyearsofpre-pharmacycourseworkiscompletedintheCollegeofLiberalArtsandSciencesatKUoranotheraccreditedinstitution.AfteracceptanceintotheSchoolofPharmacystudentscompleteprofessionalcourseworkintheDepartmentsofPharmacologyandToxicology,MedicinalChemistry,PharmaceuticalChemistry,andPharmacyPractice.Studentscompletingthefirsttwo(P1,P2)yearsoftheDoctorofPharmacyprofessionaldegreeprogramareawardedaBachelorofScienceinPharmaceuticalStudies(BSPS).ThisdegreedoesnotmakeastudenteligibletopracticepharmacyortaketheNAPLEXorMPJE.StudentsarerequiredtotakethePharmacyCurriculumOutcomesAssessment(PCOA)duringtheirthird(P3)professionalyear.Ofthe140professionalcredithours,44credithoursinvolveexperientiallearning.Uponcompletionoftheforthprofessional(P4)year,studentsareawardedtheDoctorofPharmacy(PharmD)degreeandaretheneligibletotaketheNorthAmericanPharmacyLicenseExamination(NAPLEX)andtheMultistateJurisprudenceExamination(MJPE)forprofessionallicensure.

b. ThefacultyadoptsthepoliciesoncurricularandacademicstandardsonrecommendationfromtheAcademicStanding,Curriculum,Assessment,andAdmissioncommittees.ThesepoliciesareincludedwithinthishandbookandarereviewedduringP1orientation.

4) ElectiveDidacticCourseRequirements

a. Theprofessionalcurriculumincludesfourdidacticcredithours.Oneelectivecourse(ofatleastonecredit-hour)mustbecompletedinoneofthethreebasicsciencedepartments(MedicinalChemistry,PharmacologyandToxicology,PharmaceuticalChemistry)andoneelectivemustbecompletedintheDepartmentofPharmacyPractice.TheremainingtwoelectivecoursesmaybecompletedinaSchoolofPharmacydepartmentofthestudent’schoice.

b. Electivesthatinvolvefacultyfrommultipledepartments(designatedPHAR)maynotbesubstitutedforabasicscienceelectivebutmaycounttowardssatisfyingthePharmacyPracticerequirement.

5) ExperientialEducation

a. Experientiallearningislearningbydoing.Experientiallearningbecomesexperientialeducationwhenitispartofastructuredprogramwherebythestudentapplieswhatheorshehaslearnedintheclassroomtoreal-lifesituations.Asignificantportion(~31%)oftheDoctorofPharmacycurriculumiscomprisedofexperientialeducationintheformofPharmacyPracticeExperiences(PPEs),commonlyreferredtoas“rotations.”

b. TheAccreditationCouncilforPharmacyEducation(ACPE),theaccreditingbodyforschoolsandcollegesofpharmacyintheUnitedStates,mandatestheparticipationofstudentpharmacistsinbothIntroductoryandAdvanced(Specialized)PharmacyPracticeExperiencesaspartoftheprofessionalprogramleadingtotheDoctorofPharmacydegree.ACPEguidelinesprescribethatIntroductoryPharmacyPracticeExperiences(IPPEs)beginearlyinthecurriculum,involveactualpracticeexperiencesinbothcommunityandinstitutionalsettings,parallelandintegratewiththedidacticandlaboratorycourseworkandcontinueinaprogressivemannerleadingtoentryintotheAdvanced(Specialized)PharmacyPracticeExperiences(APPEs)offeredinthefinalyearofthecurriculum.Thisexperientialcourseshouldservetoexposethestudenttothepracticeofcommunitypharmacyineitheranindependentpharmacyoralocal,regionalornationalchainpharmacyineitheraruralorurbansettingwithinthestateofKansas.

c. Gradingbasis:AllIPPEsaregradedusingthefollowingcompetency-basedgradingscale:Satisfactory(S),Unsatisfactory(U),orIncomplete(I).AllAPPEsaregradedusingthefollowingcompetency-basedgradingscale:Excellent(E),Satisfactory(S),Unsatisfactory(U),orIncomplete(I).Theofficeofexperientialeducationcollaborateswithpreceptorstodefinethecompetenciesusedduringgradeassignments.

d. IntroductoryPharmacyPracticeExperience(IPPE):AllDoctorofPharmacystudentswillberequiredtoparticipatein2IPPErotations.Thefirstwilltakeplaceinthesummerfollowingthefirstyearinacommunitypharmacysettinglasting1month(160hours).ThesecondIPPErotationwilltakeplaceinthesummerfollowingsecondyearinaninstitutionalorhospitalsettinglasting1month(160hours).IntroductoryPharmacyPracticeExperiencesareintendedtoprovideearlyinsightintothepracticeofpharmacyandhelpguidestudent’scareerchoices.StudentsareassignedIPPErotationsaftersubmittingalistofpreferences.AllstudentswillberequiredtosignaStatementofUnderstandingwhichconfirmsthestudentknowsheorshecouldbeplacedatasiteanywhereinthestateofKansas;andinsomecasesMissouriorOklahoma.IfdeemednecessarybytheAssistantDean/DirectorofExperientialEducation,housingisprovidedbytheschoolforremoteIPPErotations.FailedIPPErotations(i.e.anassignedgradeof“U”)mustberetakenovertheacademicwinterbreak.BothIPPErotationsmustbepassedtobeeligibleforAPPErotations.

e. AdvancedPharmacyPracticeExperience(APPE):ForastudenttobeeligibletoparticipateinAdvancedPharmacyPracticeExperiencecourseshe/shemusthavesuccessfullycompletedallcourseswithapassinggradeandbeingoodstandingintheSchoolofPharmacy.ThefinalyearoftheDoctorofPharmacyprogramisspentparticipatinginpharmacypracticeexperiencerotations.Theseconsistofone-monthrotations(160contacthours)invarioushealthcaresettings.Suchpracticesettingsmayincludeavarietyofacutecare,ambulatorycare,managedcare,andalternatepracticesites.Eachrotationprovidesanacademicallystructuredenvironmentthatenablesthestudenttogainpracticalexperienceundertheguidanceofapracticinghealthcareprofessional.Everystudentisrequiredtocompletenineone-monthrotations.Eachrotationbeginsthefirstweekdayofthemonthandendsonthelastweekdayofthemonth.Agradewillbeassignedforeachrotation.Failureoftwoadvancedpracticeexperientialrotations(i.e.anassignedgradeof“U”)willresultinastudent’sdismissalfromthePharmDprogram.

f. Compensation:Astudentmaynotreceivebothacademiccreditandfinancialcompensationforexperientialrotations.Sinceacademiccreditisbeingearnedbythestudentduringtheirpharmacypracticeexperiencerotations,theycannotreceivefinancialcompensationforthem.Becausethestudentdoesearninternhoursfortheserotationsaswellasacademiccredit,theyareexpectedtospendatleast40hoursperweekattheirrotationsite.

g. Everyeffortwillbemadetoensurethatpharmacypracticeexperiencerotationsareassignedinafairandequitablemanner.Anumberoffactorsaretakenintoaccountbeforerotationassignmentsaremade.Considerationisgiventostudentpreferences,previousworkhistoryofthestudent,locationofthesite,aswellasastudent’sfutureemployment/residencyplans.Careisalsotakentoensurethattheselectedrotationsprovideawiderangeofexperiencesforeachstudent.Studentsmayberequiredtotravelthroughoutthestate(e.g.,Wichita,Hays,GardenCity)orsurroundingareatocompletetheirpharmacypracticeexperiencerotations.Studentswillreceivenoticeoftheirassignmentswellinadvanceofthestartofeachrotationsotheycanmakeappropriatehousingarrangements.

h. RequiredMedicalRecords:Beforeparticipatinginthepharmacypracticeexperiencerotations,eachstudentmustagainshowproofofcurrentprofessionalliabilityandhealthinsuranceandappropriateimmunizations.ThisshouldbeonrecordwiththeImmunizationCoordinatorfrompreviousyearsbutitisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoverifytheinformationandpresentittotheAssistantDean/DirectorofExperientialEducation.Inaddition,studentsmustproduceanotherbackgroundcheckfreeofexclusionaryevents/convictionsbeforeenteringtheclerkshipportionsoftheprogram.

i. ClarificationofExternship,Clerkship,andInternship:Externship-isatermthathasbeenusedtodescribeanacademicallystructured,experience-basedtrainingprogramthatisregulatedbytheSchoolofPharmacy.Clerkship-isatermthathasreferredtoanexternshipthatisclinicallyoriented.Ineithercase,thepharmacistpreceptor’sprimaryresponsibilitytothestudentisasateacher.Academiccreditisgrantedandnofinancialcompensationtothestudentisallowedforworkdoneduringeitheranexternshiporaclerkship.“Pharmacypracticeexperience”hasbecomethetermusedforwhathaspreviouslybeencalled“clerkship”or“externship”.Internship-isnotacademicallystructuredandtheSchoolofPharmacyhasnoinvolvementwithinternshiptraining.InternshiptrainingisunderthejurisdictionoftheKansasStateBoardofPharmacy.Thestudentmayreceivefinancialcompensationfortheworktheyperformduringtheirinternship.Thepharmacistpreceptor’sprimaryresponsibilitytothestudentwhenthestudentisemployedisasanemployer.

j. Requiredhours:TheKansasStateBoardofPharmacyrequires1500hoursofinternshiptrainingunderthesupervisionofalicensedpharmacistpreceptortobeeligibleforlicensuretopracticepharmacyintheStateofKansas.Theactual1760contacthoursofKUpharmacypracticeexperiencesandinternshipsareeligibletobecountedtowardthisrequirement.Ifyouworkinapharmacyasanintern,itisrecommendedthatyouregisterthesehourswiththeBoardofPharmacy.SomeStateBoardsofPharmacywillnotaccepttheexternshiphoursearnedwhileastudentascredittowardtheirtotalinternshiphourrequirementforlicensure.Bothexternshipandinternshiphoursarerequiredinsomestatespriortolicensure.

6) MinorinBusiness

a. StudentswhohavesatisfiedtheKUCoregeneraleducationrequirementswithAPcreditorothermeansmayelecttocompleteaminorinBusinessduringtheirtimeatKU.Toearnabusinessminor,studentsmustcompletesixcoursesbeforetheendoftheirpharmacyschoolcareer.Thecoursesmaybecompletedpriortoenteringtheprofessionalschoolorconcurrentwiththeprofessionalcourses.Informationonthebusinessminorpresentedhereisinformationalonlyandsubjecttochangewithoutnotice.Forofficialinformationrefertothebusinessminorwebsiteatthefollowingaddresshttp://www.business.ku.edu/minor

7) PharmD/Master’sinBusinessAdministrationDualDegreeProgram

a. PharmacystudentsmayapplyforadmissiontotheDoctorofPharmacy/MasterofBusinessAdministrationDualDegreepathatKU.TheobjectiveofthisacademicpathwayistoallowstudentstoearnanMBAfromtheSchoolofBusinesswhilecompletingtheirDoctorofPharmacydegreeintheSchoolofPharmacy.

b. TheMBAcourseworkmaybecompletedin-personintheeveningsontheKUEdwardscampusinOverlandPark,KS.Alternatively,anonlineMBAprogramisalsoavailableatKU.MoststudentsearnthePharmD/MBAbyextendingtheirstudiesatleastonecalendaryear.Inunusualcircumstances,studentsmaybeabletocompletethePharmDandMBAprogramsoverthefouryearsoftheprofessionalprogram.

c. SuccessfulcompletionofthePharmD/MBAdualdegreeprogramwillbedependentuponahighlevelofcommitmentfromstudentsacceptedintotheprogram.StudentswhowishtopursuethePharmDandMBA(viathedualdegreeprogram)must:1)beadmittedtotheSchoolofPharmacy,2)beapprovedbytheSchoolofPharmacyascandidatesforthedualdegreeprogramduringthesecondprofessionalyearinPharmacySchool,3)beacceptedintotheMBAprogrambytheSchoolofBusiness.Preferencewillbegiventopharmacystudentshavingpreviousexperienceinapharmacypracticesiteorotherbusinessenvironmentorwhoholdabaccalaureatedegree.

d. TheGraduateManagementAdmissionsTest(GMAT)isrequiredforallapplicantstothePharmD/MBAprogram.CurrentpharmacystudentsmustdeclaretheirintenttoseekadmissiontothedualdegreeprogramduringtheirfallsemesteroftheirP2year.Theadmissionscommitteemaygrantexceptionstothisrequirementinindividualcases.TheSchoolofBusinessfollowstheGraduateStudiesregulationinrequiringa3.0cumulativegradepointaverageforallcourseworkcountedtowardamaster’sdegree.

e. Followingthecompletionofallrequirementsforthejointdegreeprogram,jointdegreestudentswillreceivediplomasfrombothSchoolsconcurrently.PharmacystudentswhodonotcompleterequirementsfortheMBAmaystillearnaPharmDdegreewhenrequirementsforthatdegreearecompleted.

8) PharmD/Master’sofScienceinClinicalResearchDualDegreeProgram

a. Eachyear,theHeartlandInstituteforClinicalandTranslationalResearchinvitesP3pharmacystudentsfromtheSchoolofPharmacytoapplyforthePredoctoralClinical&TranslationalResearchTL1TrainingProgram.Thisprogramisdesignedtostimulateinterestinclinicalresearchcareersforcurrentmedical,dentalandpharmacystudentsbycreatingadual-degreetrainingtrackdesignedtoprovidetheskillsnecessarytoparticipateinclinicalandtranslationalresearchimmediatelyuponentryintotheirclinicaltraining.Traineesmusttakealeaveofabsencefromtheircurrentacademicprogram.Forpharmacystudents,thistrainingprogramiscompletedfollowingtheirP3year,startingthatsummer,continuesoverthefallandspringsemestersandtheprogramisfinishedthefollowingsummer.StudentscompletePharmDrotationsintheir5thyearoftheprofessionalprogram(thatis,itextendstheprofessionalprogramdurationfrom4to5years).

b. InterprofessionalEducation(IPE)Program:Studentswillberequiredtoparticipateininterprofessionaleducationalactivitieseachacademicyearwherebypharmacystudentsinteractwithotherhealthprofessionstudentsinsimulations,lectures,andothertrainingprogramsatvariouslocationsandtimesofday.ThemissionoftheSchoolofPharmacy’sIPEprogramis:“totransformthequalityofpatientcarethroughinterprofessionalteam-basededucation,practice,andresearch.”TheIPEprogram’svisionisthat“pharmacistswillprovidepatient-centeredcareandresearchwithinaninterprofessionalteamtohelpachievetheTripleAim(improvedqualityofcare,improvedpatientexperience,andreducedcost)ofhealthcare.”TheIPEprogram’sstrategicgoalsareforstudentto:1)acquireknowledge,skills,andfavorableattitudestowardinterprofessionalteam-basedcare;b)applyknowledge,skills,andfavorableattitudesinavarietyofinterprofessionalpatient-carecontexts;andc)demonstratecompetencyofknowledge,skills,andfavorableattitudestowardinterprofessionalteam-basedcareupongraduation.ManyIPEactivitiesoccurontheKUMCandWichitacampuses.Studentsmustprovidetheirowntransportationtothisassessment.

PerformanceAssessment:Studentswillbeassessedusingstandardizedpatientsand/orsimulatedmanikins.Studentsmustsuccessfullypassperformanceassessmentexamstoremainingoodstanding.Studentswhodonotpass(scorebelowthreshold)willberequiredtomeetwiththePerformanceAssessmentCoordinator,AssociateDeanforAcademicAffairs,andtheSeniorAssociateDeantoestablishaformalplanofremediation.Ifdeficienciesarenotsuccessfullyremediatedwithinthetimelineestablished,thestudentwillbedismissedfromtheprogram.Studentshavetherighttoappealtheirremediationplanordismissalfromtheprogram.

Studentevaluationofteaching:Studentevaluationofteachingis1)essentialinmaintainingexcellentinstructioninthePharmDprogram,2)neededtomodifycoursecontentanddeliverymethods,and3)isanessentialcomponentofaprofessor’sbidfortenureand/orpromotioninacademicrankwithintheUniversity.Inthepast,evaluationresponseratesinmanycourseshavebeensignificantlybelowtheminimumresponseratesneededtoproducemeaningfulstatisticalresults.Approximately60studentsoutofaclasssizeof150mustsubmitcompletedevaluationstoensuretheevaluationresultshaveadequatestatisticalprecisionandproducereasonableassessmentsofinstruction.Toincreasestudents’responseratesandconcomitantlyreducethenumberofevaluationrequestsstudentsreceive;theAssessmentCommitteeoutlinedthefollowingstudentevaluationofteachingprocedureforthePharmDprogram.Eachcourseisassigned60studentswhoarerequiredtocompleteallinstructorandcourseevaluationsforthatspecificcourse.Baseduponthenumberofcoursesandclasssize,inanygivensemester,studentswilllikelyberequiredtoevaluate~3oftheircourses.The60studentsassignedforeachcourseisdeterminedbystratifyingeachclassintoquartilesbasedonacademicperformance(determinedbycumulativeGPAfromthepriorsemester).Fifteenstudentsarerandomlyselectedfromeachquartileandarerequiredtocompletetheevaluationsforthecourseinthe2weeksprecedingfinals(onlineevaluationswillcloseonSundaypriortofinals).Theonlinecourseevaluationsystemusedbytheschoolcandeterminewhichstudentshavesubmittedacompletedevaluationbutcannotidentifywhichevaluationbelongstoaspecificstudent.Atthetimeofcompletion,thesubmittedevaluationsaresplitfromtherequiredstudentIDnumberandtheevaluationsremainanonymous.Instructorsarenotinformedwhichstudentswereselectedtoevaluatetheircourse.Studentswhofailto

completetheirassignedevaluationswillnotbepermittedtoparticipateintheirupcomingIPPE/APPErotationsandwillbedroppedfromanyelectivecourseinwhichtheyareenrolledinthefollowingsemester.Whilespecificstudentswillbeassignedtoeachcourse,anystudentwillhavetheoptiontoevaluateanycourseinwhichtheyareenrolled.Instructorsareaskedtoprovidetimein-classfortheevaluationstobecompleted.

18) ClassAttendance

a. Individualdepartmentsandtheircourseinstructorsmayprovideadditionalguidelinesonclassattendance.Unlessotherwisestated,attendanceisrequiredalthoughexcusedabsencesforattendingmeetings(seebelow),illnessordeathsinthefamilymaybehonoredbyindividualinstructors.Anystudentmissingmorethan15%ofthescheduledmeetingsessionsofaclasswillbedeemedtohaveexcessiveabsences.Excessiveunexcusedabsencesfromanyclassmayresultintheadministrativewithdrawalofthestudentfromthatclass,atthediscretionoftheinstructor.Studentsshouldnotethatanexpectationofstudentsintheprofessionalprogramisthatclassattendanceandschoolactivitiesaretobethetoppriorityforallstudents.Absencesforwork,work-relatedactivities,orrecreationaltravel,asafewexamples,arenotacceptable.

19) ExaminationandStudyMaterials

Priortothestartofthesemester,coursecoordinatorsprovidetheirproposedexamdatestotheAssociateDeanforAcademicAffairs.Thisinformationiscompiledandreturnedtoallthecoursecoordinators.Ifpossible,thecoursecoordinatorsattempttorescheduleexamspriortothestartofthesemesterforspecificdaysorweekswithaconcerningnumberofexams.Examinationsandquizzesduringthesemesteraresetbytheindividualcoursecoordinatorsandaregenerallyprovidedtothestudentsinthecoursesyllabus.Unannouncedquizzesorsimilarassessmentsarepermissible.Duringthesemester,regularexaminationandquizdatesmaybemovedwithtimelynoticeatthesolediscretionoftheinstructor.Theinstructormay

22) ClassDisruptions

a. Firealarmsandevacuations:Intheeventofafirealarmorbuildingevacuationduringanexamination,studentsareinstructedtoplacetheirexamfacedownontheirdeskandleavetheclassroomandbuildingbythenearestexit.StudentscompletingexamsthatareadministeredviaExamSoftshouldexittheexamandbringtheiriPadwiththem.Instructorswilllocktheclassroomastheyfollowthestudentsoutoftheclassroom.Whentheallclearisgiventore-enterthebuilding,studentswillnotbeallowedbackintheclassroomuntiltheinstructorhasenteredandcollectedalloftheexams.Ifthereistimeremainingintheclassperiodoralternatively,inthenextmeetingoftheclass,theinstructorwillprovideinstructionsonhowtheexaminationmaterialwillbecoveredinanotherexamandatalatertime.

b. AllstudentsenteringKUSchoolofPharmacy’sPharmDprogramarerequiredtoownaniPadoriPadmini(capableofrunningthemostcurrentiOS),aswellasselectaccessoriesandapplications.RecentcurricularchangesnowrequirestudentstouseiPadsintheclassroomandduringexperientialrotations.FacultymembersareincreasinglyincorporatingiPadsandothertechnologyintheclassroom.End-of-the-yearassessmentdatashowsthatthemobilityofiPadsallowstudentstostudyatanytimeorplaceandtohavealltheirlecturenotesandothereducationalresourcesorganizedinasinglelightweightdevice.CurrentstudentsusetheiriPadsinawidevarietyofways,includingdownloadingandannotatinglecturenotes,listeningtopodcastorrecordedlectures,participatinginaudienceresponsepollingduringlectures,readingiBooksandonlinetextbooks,communicatingviaapprovedvideochattingappswithstudentsorfacultyonourvariouscampuses,andcompletingactivitiesinthesixsemestersofpharmacyskillslaboratory.iPadsarealsousedtoadministerquizzesandexamsinasecuretestingenvironmentontheiPad.Oursenior(P4)studentsbenefitfromtheiPadbyhavingmobileaccesstoelectronicmedicalrecordsaswellastheirlecturenotesanddruginformationsoftwarewhileonrotation.StudentsareprovideddetailedinstructionsandalistofdeviceandapplicationrequirementsoverthesummerpriortoP1matriculation.

26) ProfessionalMeetingAttendanceandStudentTravelPolicy

a. TheSchoolofPharmacypromotesandencouragestheprofessionalismofallofitsstudentsinpartthroughprovidingspecificopportunitiesandsupportforstudentstoattendlocal,regional,andnationalmeetings.ThefollowingtravelpoliciesapplytoallstudentsintheSchoolofPharmacy:

i. Studentsinthe1stsemesteroftheirP1yeararenotallowedtoattendout-of-statemeetingswiththeSchool’ssupport.

ii. Studentsinanyoftheclasses(e.g.,secondsemesterP1,P2,P3,orP4years)mayattendmeetingswiththeSchool’ssupportunderthefollowingconditions:

1. 28) ClassroomVisitorandSeatingPolicy

a. Classroomvisitors(children,family,friends,etc)maydisruptthelearningenvironment.Asaresult,onlystudentspayingtuition,faculty,andschooladministrationmayenteraclassroomwhileclassisinsession.Specialpermissionforexceptionsrequiresauthorizationbyschooladministration.UnlessotherwisestatedbyaDeanoraninstructor,theentirecenterbackrowofseatinginclassrooms2020and3020ontheLawrencecampus,andclassrooms2304and2315ontheWichitacampus,arereservedforadministrativeuseduringPharmacyclassesandtoaccommodateobservationbyapprovedvisitors.

a. TheAcademicandProfessionalMisconductcommitteeisresponsiblefortheevaluationofanystudentbackgroundcheckthatcontainsapotentialexclusionaryevent.Itisstronglyencouragedthatifyouhaveanypriororpendingincidentsorissuesofconcernsthatmayormaynotbereflectedinabackgroundcheck,butthatmaypotentiallyprecludeyourabilitytobealicensedpharmacistorpharmacystudentintern,thatyouself-reportsuchincidentsinwrittendetail,submittedtotheattentionoftheSeniorAssociateDeanintheSchoolofPharmacy.ApotentialexclusionaryeventisanyactionoreventthatmayexcludethestudentfrommatriculatingorprogressingintheSchoolofPharmacy.Examplesofexclusionaryandnon-exclusionaryeventsinclude,butarenotlimitedto,thefollowing:

30) RequestforCampusReassignmentPolicyandProceduresa. Thefollowingdescribesthepoliciesandproceduresthatwillbeimplementedifapharmacystudent

requestscampusreassignmentfromtheLawrenceCampustotheWichitaCampusorviceversa.KUSOPStudentsingoodstandingmayrequestcampusreassignmentinaccordancewiththefollowingguidelines:

i. Requestsforcampusreassignmentmustbesubmittedatleast60dayspriortothebeginningofthesemesterinwhichthestudentdesirestochangecampuslocations.

ii. AstudentwillONLYbepermittedtomakeanapprovedchangeincampuslocationsONEtime.iii. Requestsforcampusreassignmentwillbeconsideredonacase-by-casebasisandapprovedonlyfor

MatriculationPolicies32) TechnicalStandards

a. 33) BackgroundChecks&PharmacyStudentInternRegistration

a. AllstudentsmustberegisteredasapharmacystudentinterningoodstandingwiththeKansasStateBoardofPharmacyandprovideabackgroundcheck,freeofconvictions/eventsdefinedbytheSchoolofPharmacyaspotentiallyexclusionary,beforebeginningclassesintheSchoolandyearlythereafter.Studentswillbeinstructedbytheschoolonhowtocompletethisprocess.MatriculationintotheSchoolofPharmacyandtheopportunitytocontinueinandcompletetheprogramaredependentoncompliancewiththisrequirement.OrderingofthebackgroundcheckandinsuringitsreceiptbytheSchoolofPharmacyistheresponsibilityofthestudent.Exclusionaryeventsmayincludebutarenotlimitedto:1)anydrugoralcohol-relatedviolationorconviction,2)anysexcrime,3)anymisdemeanororfelonyconviction,4)suspensionorrevocationofpharmacystudentinternlicensebytheStateBoardofPharmacy.

34) Pre-PharmacyCourseTransferPolicy

a. Thepre-pharmacycurriculumrequirementsmaybecompletedatanyaccreditedinstitutionintheUnitedStates.Inaddition,courseworkcompletedatnon-accreditedinstitutionsmaybeaccepteduponconcurrentapprovaloftheUniversityofKansasRegistrarandtheSchoolofPharmacyAcademicStandingandCurriculumCommittees.Pre-pharmacycoursecredit,however,isonlyconsideredandmaybeawardedwhencoursecredithoursarereflectedonanofficialinstitutiontranscript.ForspecificcourserequirementsseetheCurriculumandAcademicProgramssection.

35) ProfessionalPharmacyCourseTransferPolicy

a. TheUniversityofKansastypicallydoesnotaccepttransferstudentsfromotherprofessionalprograms.Professionalcoursescompletedatanon-accreditedinstitutionarenottransferableforcredittowardstheDoctorofPharmacydegreerequirementsattheUniversityofKansas.Inexceptionalcases,studenttransfersfromaccreditedschoolsofpharmacyareconsideredonanindividualbasisbytheAdmissionsCommitteeoftheSchool.TheAcademicStandingandCurriculumCommitteesthenevaluatesallrequestsfortransfercreditofprofessionalcourses.Intherareinstancewhenatransferstudentisadmitted,aminimumof90credithoursofprofessionalcoursesmustbecompletedattheUniversityofKansasSchoolofPharmacytobeeligiblefortheDoctorofPharmacydegree.

41) JobPlacementforPharmacyGraduates

a. Whilethestudentisresponsibleforseekingandsecuringemployment,theschoolhostsajobfaireachyeartoaidandsupportstudentsinthiseffort.P4studentsareexemptfromrotationsonthedayofthejobfairandareencouragedtoattendthefunction.Typically40to60employersattendthefair.Theemployerrepresentativesinattendancehavecareerpathwayopportunitiescoveringabroadscopeofsettings,includingpost-graduateresidencies.Theschool,throughtheDeansoffice,providesassistancewiththepreparationofresumes,businesscards,andaninterviewprotocol.

42) StudentswithConfirmedorSuspectedChemicalDependenceorImpairment

a. TheSchoolofPharmacyworkscooperativelywiththeKansasStateBoardofPharmacy,theKansasPharmacistsAssociationandtheCommitteeonImpairedPharmacyPractice(CIPP)toensurethatanystudentswithalcoholorsubstanceabuseproblemshaveaccesstoprofessionalhelpandcounseling.InformationaboutthisprogramcanbeaccessedviatheKansasPharmacistsAssociationwebsiteatthefollowingaddress:http://www.ksrx.org/.

b. Uponmatriculationintotheprofessionaldegreeprogram,specificallyduringprograminterviews,studentssignaletterattestingtotheirunderstandingthat“studentsintheUniversityofKansasSchoolofPharmacymayberequiredtosubmittorandomalcoholand/ordrugscreensasaconditionofparticipationinrequiredcomponentsofthecurriculumandthatpositivetestingofsuchscreensmayresultinexpulsionfromtheUniversityofKansasSchoolofPharmacy.”

PositionResponsibilities:RepresentrespectiveclassattheSchoolofPharmacyStudentAdvisoryCouncil(STUCO)monthlymeetings.Actively,andinatimelymanner,seekandberesponsiveandavailabletorepresentandconveytheconcernsandissuesoffellowclassmatesoneachcampuslocation,LawrenceandWichita.PresentissuesofconcernonbehalfoftheclassatSTUCOandtotheadministrationoftheSchoolofPharmacy.Conveyinformationonprogramissues,concerns,andchangestofellowclassmatesonbothcampuslocationsregardingpresentationsanddiscussionsperSTUCOmeetingdiscussionsandinformationprovidedbytheSchooladministrationorfacultywithrespecttoaclasstheyareteaching.Serveasacommunicationsupportliaisonbetweenfacultyandclassregardingclassannouncementsandtimeorlocationchanges.RepresentrespectiveclassatofficialSchoolofPharmacyeventsonrequestoftheDeansOffice.TheaboveresponsibilitiesapplyfirsttotheClassPresidentandsecondlytotheClassVice-PresidentwhentheClassPresidentisunabletomeetanyoftheabovepositionresponsibilities.ElectedindividualswhodonotfulfilltheaboveresponsibilitiesmayberemovedfromofficeatthediscretionoftheSchoolofPharmacyAdministration.

48) FoodintheClassrooms

a. StudentfoodanddrinksareallowedintheMortarandPestleCaféarea,thePharmacyStudentLounge,andtheConferenceRoomsintheDeansSuiteandDepartmentofPharmacyPracticeontheLawrencecampus.Onlybottledwaterisallowedinanyoftheclassrooms,conferencerooms,library,druginformation,basementandotherareasintheSchoolofPharmacybuilding.Thispolicyisapplicableincludingwhenuseofthesefacilitiesisforscheduledlectures,studentorganizationeventsandanyandallotheractivitieswithoutpriorapprovalfromtheDeansoffice.

b. OntheWichitacampus,studentfoodanddrinksareallowedinthePharmacyStudentLounge,studentstudyroomsandtheWhiteCoatCanteen.Onlybottledwaterinsealedcontainersisallowedinanyoftheclassroomsandconferencerooms.

c. Allactivitiesinwhichfoodanddrinkisdesiredinaclassroom,conferenceroomorotherfoodrestrictedareamustbesubmittedforpriorapprovaltotheDeansofficeontherespectivecampus.WithpriorpermissionfromtheDeansofficefoodanddrinksmaybeallowedinotherroomsofthebuilding.Inthosecases,theindividualsusingtheroomareresponsibleforcleanuporcostsincurredforcleaningordamagerepair.

49) Concealedcarryofhandgunsa. Individualswhochoosetocarryconcealedhandgunsaresolelyresponsibletodosoinasafeandsecure

mannerinstrictconformitywithstateandfederallawsandKUweaponspolicy.SafetymeasuresoutlinedintheKUweaponspolicyspecifythataconcealedhandgun:

i. Mustbeundertheconstantcontrolofthecarrier.ii. Mustbeoutofview,concealedeitheronthebodyofthecarrier,orbackpack,purse,orbagthat

remainsunderthecarrier’scustodyandcontrol.iii. Mustbeinaholsterthatcoversthetriggerareaandsecuresanyexternalhammerinanun-cocked

positioniv. Musthavethesafetyon,andhavenoroundinthechamber.

b. Specialconsiderationsi. Exams/Quizzes:

1. InstructorsareallowedbyKansasBoardofRegentspolicy,torequirebackpacks,pursesandotherbagsbeplacedawayfromstudentsduringexamsandquizzes,andassuchthoseitemswillnotbeundertheconstantcontroloftheindividual.

ii. Laboratorycourses:1. Somelaboratorycoursesmayrequirestudentstoleavebelongingssuchasbackpacksand

pursesawayandunattendedforthedurationofclasstime.iii. Performanceassessment:

1. Coursesthatutilizeactor-basedperformanceassessmentmayrequirestudentstoleavebelongingssuchasbackpacksandpursesawayandunattendedforthedurationofclasstime.

2. Coursesthatutilizeactor-basedperformanceassessmentmayrequiremovementand/orphysicalcontactwithothers(physicalassessmentofapatient)thatmayrevealthepresenceofaconcealedhandgun.

iv. ActivtiesatKUMCorotherhealthcarefacilitiesforrotation(IPPE,APPE)orIPE:1. Studentswillberequiredtovisitcertainfacilities/areasassociatedwithKUthatdonot

permitconcealedcarryofhandguns.Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytoknowthegunlawsandrestrictionsoftheselocations,planaccordingly,andnotbeinviolationofstateandfederallaws.

c. Storageofhandgunsi. Theuniversitydoesnotprovideappropriatesecuredstorageforconcealedhandguns.ii. ThelockersinthebasementoftheSchoolofPharmacyarenotapprovedsecuredstoragefor

handguns.iii. Studentswhochoosetocarryaconcealedhandguninapurse,backpack,orbagmustreviewand

planeachdayaccordingly,andareresponsibleformakingalternatearrangementsasnecessary.iv. Studentsmusttransfertheirhandguntoanapprovedsecurestoragedeviceintheirvehicleortheir

residenceiftheeventsoftheday(e.g.exams,quizzes,labs,performanceassessment)dictate.d. Violationofpolicy

i. IndividualswhoviolatetheKUweaponspolicymaybeaskedtoleavecampuswiththeweaponandmayfacedisciplinaryactionundertheappropriateuniversitycodeofconduct.
