So you have booked your place at this year’s Pharmacy Show at a time when you – and thousands of your professional colleagues – are facing some of the biggest challenges and issues than at any other time since the inception of the NHS.

The microscope is out on our community and our professional image and some increasingly loud voices in important places are saying our reputation is slipping. We are being questioned as to whether commercial pursuit is overriding our professional conduct and approach - profit over patient [outcomes].

Can Pharmacy make a meaningful and measurable contribution to public health as the focus of healthcare – and commissioning - looks to switch to primary care? Do we really want to – or arguably more pertinent, are we confident enough to say we want to, and then demonstrate it.

We are being asked to focus on medicines optimisation at a time when the current DTP model and the perfectly legal PI activity means that pharmacists spend more time managing supply than seeing patients under the NMS or undertaking targeted MURs.

Throw in the new contract changes, the continuous erosion of the commissioning pot for services and the uncertainty of the general commissioning landscape – and most pharmacists, contractors and pharmacy staff are rightly concerned about what the future holds.

Concern and uncertainty often leads to paralysis. As a community we’ve struggled to get ourselves heard externally and reach consensus internally of the direction of travel we want to take as a profession and our role in healthcare delivery against a backdrop of wholesale changes in our landscape, policy and funding.

When 6,000 pharmacists gather at the NEC for the Pharmacy Show on September 30th, it is your chance to discuss and debate many of these key issues with peers and colleagues and with leaders of our key representative bodies, who will help you realise the opportunities and to navigate through these uncertain times.

position on supply shortages is disrupting patient care and must be resolved as a matter of urgency, says John D’Arcy, Managing Director of Numark.

The results of last month’s report by the All Party Pharmacy Group (APPG) Inquiry may have come as a shock to the public, but it only confirmed what the pharmacy industry has known for some time; that patients in England are suffering because of a shortage in some NHS prescription medicines.

The group of MPs concluded that the main cause of shortages was the export of medicines intended for the UK market to other countries in the EU, and called for a “renewed sense of urgency” among those responsible for the medicines supply chain.

The problem isn’t new, says John D’Arcy, Managing Director of Numark. “Since 2007, manufacturers have been controlling supply and protecting their margins via the Reduced Wholesalers or Direct to Pharmacy (DTP) models.”

The situation has been exacerbated by the quota system, he says. “These quotas have been imposed by manufacturers without discussion or agreement, and are the greatest cause of frustration and inconvenience to pharmacists attempting to fulfil their supply obligations. Quotas combined with DTP and reduced wholesaling models not only reduces the availability of stock in the market, but also choice and competition.”

Q&A WITH MATTHEW BUTLER SHOW DIRECTOR, THE PHARMACY SHOW

We’ve done lots of research in preparation for this year’s show. We went to the market and asked delegates what they wanted so that the show really is steered by the industry. As a result, we’ve made a few changes and created a bigger and even more relevant event for you.

Following feedback from delegates, we have reconstituted our education programmes to reflect the realities of the current pharmacy landscape. We are sensitive to the very many challenges confronting pharmacy owners, management and staff and have collaborated closely with the pharmacy community to deliver a programme and an exhibition floor that allows you to get the most from your visit. We hope you leave with ideas, inspiration and some practical advice you can implement in the short-term.

This year you have more than 55 hours of education to choose from across five conference streams to give you access to the best possible educational content, but also allows you to spend quality time with the huge range of exhibitors.

We are running four keynote sessions this year; two on each day of the show. These include Kirit Patel, chairman and founder of Day Lewis, and Boots’ Director of Pharmacy Peter Bainbridge. Back by popular demand, Patel will share his experience and advice and will share his ideas on how pharmacists can become more entrepreneurial. Bainbridge will set out Boots’ vision of the future of community pharmacy. We have also gathered some of the professions leaders to debate some of the biggest issues facing our profession and our businesses – these will be interactive debates and your chance to put your questions.

The exhibition floor has been expanded to our biggest ever, with more than 350 suppliers from the trade offering great deals – for those of you who came last year, there are more than 100 new exhibitors this year.

Following the successful launch of the Clinical Conference last year, we’ve merged the Clinical Conference and the Patient Services Forum to create the Clinical & Services Forum which will run across two streams delivering you more choice of clinical education to equip you with the relevant knowledge to help you with the NMS and targeted MURs. Experts in the field will deliver a range of practical ‘How To’ sessions to provide community pharmacists with all the knowledge they need to introduce services such as smoking cessation, weight management. The forum also covers key therapeutic areas including anti-coagulation, cardiology, respiratory disease, diabetes and mental health.

With a focus on delivering best practice, other new sessions for this year include the Healthy Living Pharmacies project, where delegates will learn how this successful model works to help patients improve their health. Another session will focus on a respiratory programme in the Isle of Wight that has reduced hospital admissions. We have a number of sessions devoted to medicines optimisation.

The Association of Pharmacy Technicians is hosting its conference at the Pharmacy Show for the very first time, and we’ve introduced a Counter Assistants Forum to help them learn about products in the market and how to become more effective in pharmacy.

What can you expect from the show this year? What’s new for 2012?

company’s view of how we can all work together to build better pharmacy businesses.

We have two major debates in our Keynote Programme: the first on Sunday involving all the leaders of all major pharmacy organisations in an interactive ‘Question Time’ style debate of the key issues including the sustainable funding model, professionalism, pharmacy’s role in enhanced service commissioning, market entry and professional indemnity.

The second debate on Monday will tackle medicines shortages (see Numark’s John D’Arcy article on page 1) and its impact on our profession. This is your chance to make your views known on this on-going issue and to quiz our panel drawn from all sides of the debate and which has been subject to a major parliamentary inquiry.

The Show this year has TWO clinical streams allowing you to update your knowledge of key therapeutic areas to help you with the NMS and targeted MURs. The clinical seminars are CPD accredited by the RPS. And the Pharmacy Business Accelerator stream is brimming with practical ideas for you to

t a k e back to your pharmacy to have an immediate impact on your P&L.

There’s plenty of free educational content for you team members to enjoy, including our first ever Counter Assistants’ Forum. The show also plays host to the annual conference of Association of Pharmacy Technicians (APTUK).

And the 2012 show sees the largest ever exhibition floor with more than 350 leading UK and international suppliers and trade exhibitors – including over 100 new exhibitors.

There is plenty to see, plenty to learn and plenty to discuss. And there has never been a more important time for pharmacists to gather and take stock and plan for the future. See you on September 30th.

How good is your knowledge of herbal remedies?

Answer:Licensed Saw palmetto products are available at a daily dose of 320mg of Saw palmetto oil—the dose shown to be effective in clinical trials. It is suitable for men who have had the diagnosis of BPH confi rmed by their doctors, who are not on any other medicines for their condition. If at any time, George notices blood in his urine or complains of fever, he should see his doctor.

This series of structured training handbooks covers different common health conditions and the herbs that can be used to treat the symptoms.

They have been specially developed to support the pharmacy team in helping customers to make an informed choice. Certifi cates are available following completion of each herbal handbook, which can also form part of your mandatory CPD entries.

“Community pharmacy is changing. The old days were about dispensing prescriptions, but the future is all about service, and only those pharmacies with skilled and empowered staff will succeed,” says Kirit Patel.

He should know. As the founder and CEO of Day Lewis, the largest independently owned pharmacy chain in Europe, Kirit has grown the group from a single site in 1975 to an estate of 195, employing some 1,500 staff. The secret of the group’s success, he says, is quite simply the quality of its people.

“There’s more competition out there than ever before thanks to the internet and the supermarkets, so you can’t expect customers to stay loyal. You have to go that extra mile. You

have to focus on and invest in staff,” he says.

As community pharmacy moves increasingly into service delivery, pharmacists will have to ensure that both they and their staff acquire a new set of skills, learning how to engage with patients, making them feel comfortable and at ease. And that’s true for all pharmacies, regardless of size, says Kirit.

“If you want to build a chain you need to do a lot of training and empowerment, but even if you’re a single pharmacy employing five people, you still need to ensure that your staff develop the soft skills so they can deliver the very best service.”

Pharmacists are operating in an environment besieged by cuts and lower margins, and Kirit believes this will only continue, so those wishing to succeed in this new landscape must concentrate their efforts on the new income stream of service delivery. Equipping staff with the skills to be able to interact with and advise clients is therefore crucial.

And this new level of thinking also extends to the way pharmacies are presented, says Kirit, who would like to see pharmacists come out from behind their counters to interact more freely with patients. “At the moment the patient is too removed from the pharmacist, who typically stands behind a high shelf behind the counter – that’s two barriers between them and the patient. Pharmacies need to be more open plan like the high street banks have become. Creating an accessible and welcoming environment where the pharmacist is more visible will encourage greater patient interaction,” he says.

“This is a great industry and despite the squeezed margins, I believe pharmacy has a very promising future. We have an aging population, and more people are taking responsibility

for their health. Pharmacists are ideally placed to meet the needs and demands of these customers. We are also the government’s best hope of relieving the strain in the NHS and saving money in secondary care - we have a great future ahead.

“Events like the Pharmacy Show are so beneficial for our industry – it’s a great one-stop shop where everyone in pharmacy from owners to suppliers can come together to network and learn about the changes taking place in our sector as well as the opportunities that are available. And most importantly, the show allows pharmacy staff to learn from the experts, gain CPD points and to be empowered. It’s all in one place and so easy to do.”

KIRIT PATEL WILL BE SPEAKING IN THE KEYNOTE CONFERENCE ON 30TH SEPTEMBER AT 14:00

INVEST IN STAFF –EMPOWER & EDUCATE In an increasingly challenging and competitive market, it’s the quality of pharmacy staff that will give businesses the competitive edge and secure long term success, says Kirit Patel, founder and CEO of the Day Lewis group.

BPSA PRE-REG CONFERENCE – AIMING HIGH. SPONSORED BY THE PHARMACISTS’ DEFENCE ASSOCIATION

BPSA has had a long association with the Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA), its sponsors, and, once again the two organisations have teamed up to produce a high quality event, which will be of immense value to preregistration graduates going through their training year.

During the pre-registration year, graduates are often given the tools and resources to enable them to acquire knowledge, but often this is not combined with developing the skills on how to do it effectively. The first (of two) events, will take place on Sunday 30th September 2012 and promises to be an exciting interactive programme. The conference will take place on Sunday 30th September.

All you have to do is collect a postcard on arrival, visit each of the named exhibitors during your time at the Pharmacy Show and find out how their products and services can help your pharmacy.

Answer each exhibitor’s simple question correctly and ensure you get your card stamped before dropping it off near the exit as you leave the show to be in with a chance of winning this amazing weekend for two in Paris (terms and conditions apply).

countries’ products in the UK, we’re just not so happy when it comes to exporting goods.”

But, the fact remains that patients must be put first. Few would argue with the APPG’s recommendations, and the industry now needs to take time to take stock of these, particularly as pan industry guidance toward a solution does not appear to be working, he says: “Guidance makes clear that there is a shared responsibility on all in the supply chain to bear in mind their obligations in respect of the supply of medicines and to be aware of the consequences of exporting medicines. If things are getting worse, the conclusion one draws is that behaviour has not changed, or if it has, not to the extent that makes any difference.“

Supply shortages will always exist, but the current position is seriously undermining the resilience of the supply chain and leading to disruption of patient care, and therefore must be resolved as a matter of urgency, says D’Arcy. “There’s no magic solution to the problem. Yes, guidance on the supply of products needs to be better understood and enforced generally, but the area that creates the biggest headache for pharmacists is the use of quotas. We need to understand the rationale behind them and the system itself needs to more transparent so the supply chain as a whole can see and understand the basis of it.”

“Pharmacists are increasingly being required by government to optimise patient use of medicines whether through medicine use reviews and the New Medicine Service in England, the Chronic Medicine Service in Scotland or the Discharge Medicine Service in Wales. This is never going to happen where the little time pharmacists have to spare in delivering these services is taken up in trying to get hold of those medicines.”

Specials from Alliance Healthcare – Specials buying – made easy Although Specials account for only 1% of all prescriptions written, they are often the most time-consuming products for busy pharmacists to source.

The introduction of the first Specials Tariff in November 2011 has increased this workload even further with the onus now on pharmacists to shop around for the best prices.

Alliance Healthcare has responded to these recent changes with the introduction of a new time-saving and cost-effective Specials service for pharmacy customers.

By leveraging existing partnerships with unlicensed manufacturers and creating a team of Specials clerks with a single point of invoicing, Specials from Alliance Healthcare now offers a service-driven facility to make life easier for time-pressed pharmacists. What’s more, Specials from Alliance Healthcare enables pharmacists to order Specials via their PMR machine.

Richard Edwards, Alliance Healthcare’s commercial manager for Specials, explains: “The Pharmacy Show is a fantastic opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to helping our customers adapt to the changes that have recently occurred in the market. Our new streamlined ordering process enables pharmacists to purchase the widest range of unlicensed imports, batch manufactured, bespoke and special obtained licensed products as quickly and efficiently as possible. Myo-Gel Ice Pack© – eases pain

Myo-Gel Ice Pack contains natural camphor, m e n t h o l ,

carbomer & spearmint oil. It has a pleasant spearmint aroma which naturally evaporates cooling tissue that is swollen and inflamed. By this process the pain eases allowing tissues to move more easily.

How Myo-Gel works: With any sprain, strain or bruise there is some bleeding into the underlying tissues. This may cause swelling, pain and delay healing. Myo-Gel Ice Pack treatment may be used in both the immediate treatment of soft tissue injuries and in later rehabilitation. The aim is to limit the body’s response to tissue injury. Hence Myo-Gel Ice Pack will:

•Reducebleedingintotissues.•Preventorreduceswelling.•Reducemusclespasm&pain.•Reducespainbynumbingthearea.•Limitstheeffectsofswelling.•Theseeffectsallhelptopreventtheareafrombecoming stiff by reducing excess tissue fluid that gathers as a result of injury and inflammation.•Canbeusedasacouplinggelwithallleadingultra sound machines.

It retains its consistency and does not have to be wiped off following treatment thus enhancing the healing mechanism of the gel. Myo-Gel Ice Pack when dispensed from a tub/tube affords the practitioner the opportunity to create a more thorough experience by massaging the affected area following treatment. This hands-on application also reinforces touch which has been shown to be very important in the healing cycle.

New range of treatment alternatives for the unwanted side effects of chemo and radiotherapy

Dry, inflamed, red, itchy skin, brittle nails and a sore mouth are some of the painful problems patients can be faced

with after chemo and radiotherapy.

Indeed dry skin and skin irritation have been voted the two most annoying and demoralising side effects of chemo and radiotherapy, ranking above insomnia, fatigue and even nausea.

Also, left untreated a minor skin irritation can all too easily turn into a major skin infection and in the worst cases this can even lead to delays in cancer treatment

Key to the effectiveness of the range is Adelmidrol a chemical (fatty acid amide analogue) clinically proven to regulate mast cell activity, modulating the mast cell reaction and restoring the capability of the tissue to respond to and repair damage

Germstar touchless technology helps fight infection

Germstar Hygiene is pioneering the use of ‘smart’ touchless hand sanitiser and

soap dispensers as a key weapon in infection control programmes across all medical and care environments.

A recent study showed superbug infections in hospitals fell dramatically during the Government’s Clean Your Hands campaign when the amount of alcohol hand rubs and soap being used tripled.

To help combat flu or other infections the need to follow simple but essential hygiene regimes is essential for personnel in any location where the importance of hand hygiene to prevent cross infection is widely accepted. In many instances it is probably the single most important factor for reducing the spread of infection. Users of Germstar sanitisers just have to place a hand under the infrared, motion-activated dispenser to receive a measured dose of sanitising liquid rinse capable of killing 99.9 per cent of bacteria, viruses and fungus.

The device, together with a full range of other hand sanitising products, can be tried at Salisbury-based Germstar’s stand at the Pharmacy Show, Stand D12. Sanitisers will also be positioned in the Clinical & Services Forum.

The only magnesium supplement that is a liquid magnesium citrate

Magnesium Supreme is the only magnesium supplement that is a liquid magnesium citrate as magnesium citrate liquid

was disallowed on the positive list.

Our product is a powder made up of two ingredients; magnesium carbonate and citric acid. When you add hot water, the two combine and create liquid magnesium citrate. So officially, it is magnesium carbonate and passed EU regulations. When combined with water, it becomes magnesium citrate. There is a magnesium citrate salt available but it is not nearly as effective.

In a recent study at the University of Reading, it was found that magnesium citrate was found to be more bioavailable than other forms of magnesium preparations. The study was a randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled, parallel intervention, of 60 days duration.

Magnesium Supreme supplements has a high repeat business; because it works.

Epicare! – removing unwanted facial hair

Think Beauty Ltd is the UK distributor for Epicare. With a successful worldwide track record, Epicare! has favourably compared with other methods as one of the safest and most natural ways of removing unwanted facial hair.

The threading device is milder on the skin than other hair removal methods such as waxing, which over time can cause the skin to sag and wrinkle. Waxing will also take off a layer of skin with each treatment leaving the skin feeling sensitive and looking raw.

Because the device is non-invasive, there is no risk of unsightly pigmentation as a depilatory cream could cause, or even worse, an allergic reaction and unlike bleaching, Epicare! Will not cause chemical burns.

The technical bit! Although Epicare is known as a threading device, there is actually no thread involved, so there are no nicks and cuts. It is designed with precise measurement for best results. The gap of the spring is calculated to be able to catch the hair accurately. It uses an exclusive but simple technology that gives you the convenience and expediency of beauty care and maintenance.

The product comes with clear instructions, with diagrams to illustrate how to use it.

For more information on Epicare, contact james @thinkbeauty.co.uk
