Welcome Welcome to your first HEIW CPD programme. It has been a hectic few months for the pharmacy team as we start to embed ourselves into our new organisation. Already we have built many new strong relationships with our colleagues from the Wales Deanery and Workforce Education and Development Services (WEDS) and can see many opportunities for new and innovative ways of working.

The agenda for pharmacy education over the next few years is ambitious and exciting. There will be a lot of significant change and the pharmacy deanery wants to work closely with everyone to enable the change. In 2018, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services asked the Welsh Pharmaceutical Committee to produce a pharmacy vision that would deliver on the Welsh Government key document - “A Healthier Wales”. The committee has worked in partnership with Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the pharmacy vision to deliver a healthier Wales will be presented to Cabinet Secretary in April 2019. The vision will have four key themes: Enhancing patient experience; Developing the Workforce; Integrating Healthcare structures and Harnessing innovation and technology.

HEIW plans will need to focus on the theme of developing the workforce. Some of the key activities to deliver on the vision over the next year will be:

> Implementing change to the Wales Pre-registration Pharmacy programme

> Scoping a Wales foundation programme for all early years pharmacists

> Second intake for pilot of foundation pharmacist programme

> Developing a career pathway for pharmacy technicians

> Developing the advanced clinical skills of the primary and community care workforce

In addition, we will:

> Continue to maintain our CPD programme offering you all a wide range of educational resources and increasing opportunities for multi-professional learning

> Continue to encourage regular communication from all of you on how we can improve your experience

> Continue to inform you of up and coming events, news items of interest and changes to guidance via “Fast Pharmacy Facts”

We really want to keep you up to date with all the exciting things that are happening, so if you are not receiving this information from us and would like to in the future, please check your communication preferences on your website profile:

https://www.wcppe.org.uk/my-account/edit-account/

I hope you will all find our Spring/Summer programme interesting and enjoyable. Margaret Allan Pharmacy Dean

National Enhanced ServicesAccreditation (NESA) Congratulations to all users who have now completed their NESA generic skills and competencies and have submitted their forms to shared services. It is positive to see such high numbers having completed the process and reassures the provision of high quality pharmacy services across Wales. As we are closely reaching the end of the first year following the launch of NESA, you will now be aware that you will have needed to pass all of the ‘generic skills and competencies’ assessments by 31st March 2019 for your reaccreditation to remain in place as of 1st April 2019. Going forward with NESA, to gain initial accreditation in any enhanced service, all generic skills and competencies must be completed along with clinical knowledge assessment for that enhanced service. Any new national enhanced service will be accredited through the NESA hub but please note that not all health boards may be commissioning each service. Once you are due to reaccredit for each enhanced service, you will be required to complete the self-certification form through the specific enhanced service tab on the NESA hub.

We are continuously monitoring feedback from our users along with the statistical data around pass rates, to help us to regulate the process. For issues regarding the All Wales Pharmacy Database or claiming for services through NECAF please contact your local health board or Shared Services Partnership. If your query relates to specific assessments for NESA then please direct your query to HEIW Pharmacy on [email protected].

Patient Safety: An Antiplatelet Case Study

Designed for:Pharmacy professionals working within a community pharmacy setting, however colleagues working in other sectors are welcome to attend.

OverviewAntiplatelet agents, which decrease platelet aggregation and inhibit thrombus formation, are used for both the primary prevention and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. For secondary prevention, patient groups that may benefit include those with; acute coronary syndromes (ACS), angina, atrial fibrillation (AF), peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and those who have had a myocardial infarction (MI), stent implantation, stroke, or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

Antiplatelet drugs are associated with a number of risks, including bleeding; therefore, patient safety is of high importance when prescribing these agents. The World Health Organisation (WHO) define patient safety as; “the reduction of risk of unnecessary harm associated with healthcare to an acceptable minimum”. This training event will therefore explore the risks and benefits of prescribing these agents, as well as how pharmacy professional can support the patient safety agenda.

Facilitator:HEIW Facilitators.
