the spread of resistant

microbes according to a

report from the recent G7

Health Ministers Meeng

held in Berlin Germany

Anmicrobial resistance

is rapidly becoming a top

health problem that could

pose a signicant challenge to thefunconing of healthcare systems

and their budget

Anbioc resistant microbes

(ARMs) are highly prevalent in

G7 and OECD countries said the

report

Paents infected by ARMs

are more likely to develop

complicaons and up to three

mes more likely to die creang an

addional cost burden for hospital

spend on average of US$10000 to

40000 for each paent involved

The chart demonstrates penicillin

resistant pneumonia graphed

against total anbioc use by

country with Australia looking

relavely less implicated in the

problem

The ndings have spurred a

call for more urgent acon by G7

countries in the area of AMR

All G7 countries have developedpolicies to tackle AMR in both the

human and animal sectors

PBS De-Listing ofOTC Medicines

AT a special meeting in April2015 the PharmaceuticalBenets Advisory Committeerecommended de-listing someover-the-counter medicinesfrom the PharmaceuticalBenets Scheme and providedthe principles for the proposedprocess

The PBAC noted that OTC

medicines used for emergencysituations (eg adrenalinglucagon GTN salbutamol)should remain listed on the PBSas well as listings on the PalliativeCare Schedule NRT nutritionalproducts and some other items

As the PBAC has been workingwith the sponsors of medicineslikely to be impacted a list ofitems being de-listed has not yetbeen published The PBAC hasindicated it expects a list to beavailable in late October or early

NovemberIn the meantime the Guild isaware members are receivingoers for OTC medicines thatare listed on the PBS Untildetails of which products willbe de-listed is known membersshould carefully consider theseoers noting that even if anOTC medicine used for a chroniccondition is no longer listed onthe PBS patients are likely torequire ongoing OTC supplyunless their doctor reassesses

them and changes their therapy

from a study in the Brish Journal

of Dermatology which found that

having more than 11 moles on

one arm indicates a higher than

average risk of developing skin

cancer according to the BBC

The research looked at 3000

twins across the UK over a period

of eight years collecng vital dataon skin type freckles and moles

They collated intriguing facts

such as that females with over

seven moles on their right arm

were nine mes more likely to

have over 50 on their whole body

Those with more than 11 on

their right arm were more likely

to have over 100 on their body

in total meaning they were at

a higher risk of developing a

melanoma the report said

And if they had more than 100

moles on their right arm theywere ve mes more likely to

develop skin cancer

The researchers stressed that

most moles are completely

harmless but said their results

could help health professionals

quickly and easily assess paents

for melanoma risk
