TRAVEL ADVICE

by planeThe fastest way to travel to Koh Phangan and perfect for those with a limited stay in Thailand. Koh Samui is serviced by Bangkok Airways and there are regular daily flights from around Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Check www.bangkokair.com for details. From the airport take a taxi to one of the piers where you can catch a ferry to Koh Phangan for about 250 Baht. The last ferry leaves at 6pm.

Suratthani is serviced by Thai Airways and the low cost carriers Air Asia and Nok Air. The latter two airlines offer great Bangkok-Suratthani deals. Upon your arrival to the airport, visit a travel agency to purchase a bus & boat combo ticket for between 500-600 baht to Koh Phangan.

by train: These run throughout the day leaving from Bangkok and southern Thailand. In our opinion, the overnight sleeper train is the best value option when traveling to Koh Phangan. You will need to reserve your train ticket in advance as it is a popular way to travel. At the time of booking there is a choice of 1st and 2nd class cabins which have either fans or air condi-tioning. Travelers often prefer cooled cabins as the air conditioning systems on trains produce cold and very dry air.

You will receive a table, a sofa which is converted to a flat bed in the evening and a waiter serving food and beverag-es. Trains stop in Suratthani where you can arrange a bus and ferry ticket to Koh Phangan. More info and timetable on www.railway.co.th

by bus & ferry: From Suratthani: Songserm Ferry, Raja Ferry (both take approx 3 hrs) or the quicker Lomprayah catamaran (approx 1.5 hrs). A night boat service is also available with comfortable beds and fans. This departs at 11pm and takes about 7 hrs. From Koh Samui: 3 different piers on Samui service Koh Phangan. The boat journey can take anywhere from 30 min to 1 hour.

The Haad Rin Queen Ferry is another option and travels directly to Haad Rin. From Koh Tao: Boats depart from Mae Haad pier at regular intervals and arrive in Thongsala. Choose between Songserm, Seatran or Lomprayah services. The best option is a combo ticket which includes an overnight bus to Suratthani and the onward ferry to Phangan. The cost varies but is usually around 700 baht. Khaosan Road offers the cheapest deals. The Government bus leaves from Bangkok south station at 7pm and arrives in Koh Phangan at 10am.

Koh Phangan means ‘sandbar island’ because the island is surrounded by sand bars pro-

tecting the island from strong monsoons. It’s the 5th largest island in Thailand with a size

of about 168km2. More than half the island is designated as National Park with over 80km2

of rain forest, flora and fauna.

Koh Phangan is not just a tourist destination, it’s a royal favorite! King Chulalongkorn visited

Thansadet or The Royal Stream 14 times during his reign 1868-1910. Other royals to venture the island are King Rama VII and Rama IV (the current King of Thailand).

Life on the island a few centuries ago was a sharp contrast to the bustling island we see

today. Around 200 years ago, the Chinese from Hainan migrated here. Over 300 families were reported residing on the island (mostly Thai and Chinese) and earned a happy & peaceful living off coconut farming, fishing, bird’s nest

harvests and mining. Dating even further back...over 2000 years ago, research and

discoveries prove settlements of most likely Muslim sea gypsies existed on the island.

Back to present time, the 1st bungalow was built about 20 years ago and the islanders

began to change their way of life to join the tourism business. Over the last few decades, the population has increased, mostly from

tourism, to 12,000 people and that’s excluding tourists!

events. You can even take the experience home with you and try out a Thai cooking class! Be sure to try out the local favorites such as Som Tam which is a delicious and spicy papaya salad and the

ever-popular Tom Yum which is a fragrant hot and sour soup with fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves,

lime juice, and crushed chili peppers.

Fresh market & local supermarketsFancy cooking your own food? There’s an excellent supply of large supermarkets in Thong-sala: Tesco Lotus, Big A and Big C which carry everything you could need to make Thai or international dishes. For a truly authentic shopping experience, visit the outdoor fresh market in Thongsala for a range of fresh fish and veggies.

Thongsala food marketThis is by far the best spot for cheap & delicious eats. Dishes are around 50 baht and include curries with rice, fried rice, pad Thai, soups, pancakes, waffles, meat on sticks, sushi and even pizza. Make sure you try a fruit shake for only 30 baht. Open during the day but best in the evening when all the food carts are set-up.

RestaurantsKoh Phangan has some exciting restaurants offering authentic Thai and international cuisines such as Italian, Japanese and Mexican. We recommend Crave in Haad Yao, Fisherman’s Restaurant and not to miss is one of the fun BBQ ‘hot pot’ restaurants where you can pick fresh food from a massive buffet to bring and cook right at your table.

Thai cooking classesLearn to cook like a local! Gain a true understanding of traditional Thai cuisine that you can enjoy even after your holiday ends. There are several cookery schools in Koh Phangan...ask your hotel or travel agent for details and advice.

Food festivals & eventsIn addition to the daily Thongsala food market, You will find similar delicious and cheap dishes at the ongoing events and festivals throughout the island. ABOUT KOH PHANGAN

EAT FRUIT... Thai STYLE!

No trip to Thailand is complete without trying some of the exotic and intriguing fruits. Many of these fruits are typically unavailable

in Western countries so try as much as you can while you are here! In Thailand, one can find papaya, jackfruit, mango, mangosteen, langsat, longan, pomelo, pineapple, rose apples, durian, Burmese

grapes and other native fruits. You can even check out a fruit festival: Chantaburi in Thailand each year holds the World Durian

Festival in early May or the Langsat festival each year in Uttaradit province around the middle to end of September.

DurianRegarded by many in SE Asia as "king of fruits", durian is distinctive for its large size, strong odor, and thorn-covered husk. The edible flesh emits a distinct odor that's strong & penetrating...even with the husk intact. Many describe the aroma like rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage! You either love it or hate it, try it for yourself and see!

RambutanRambutans have a wild hairy exterior with a smooth, sweet white fruit inside. They are easy to peel by splitting the skin apart like an orange. The flavor is similar to lychee fruit, but a bit more tart. They’re delicious plain or better yet...in a cocktail!Rambutans are delicate and don’t keep longer than 1 or 2 days at room temperature.

MangosteenThe fruit of the mangosteen is sweet, tangy and juicy, somewhat fibrous, with fluid-filled vesicles (like the flesh of citrus fruits) and an inedible, deep reddish-purple colored rind. The flesh is sweet, delicious in white segments like an orange. Each segment contains one to four bitter-tasting seeds.

DragonfruitThis fruit is similar to kiwifruit. The flesh is mildly sweet and the seeds eaten together with the flesh, have a nutty taste and are rich in lipids. The fruit can be converted into juice or wine or the flowers can be eaten or steeped as tea. The skin is not eaten. The taste is quite bland similar to melon or kiwifruit.

LonganThe longan (Chinese: literally: "Dragon Eye"), is so named because it resembles an eyeball when its fruit is shelled. The seed is small, round and hard, and black enamel-like. The fully ripened, freshly harvested shell is bark-like, thin, and firm, making the fruit easy to shell by squeezing the fruit out as if one is "cracking" a sunflower seed.

ABOUT KOH PHANGAN

what is loi kratong? On the night of the full moon, Thais launch a 'krathong' on a

river, canal or a pond and make a wish. The actual Krathongs are typically made from the trunk of a banana tree, spider lily plant,

bread or styrofoam. They are decorated with folded banana leaves, incense, flowers and a candle. A small coin is sometimes included

as an offering to the river spirits. The krathong's floating has differ-ent meanings including letting go of hate, anger, and defilement, a way to thank the Goddess of Water or a means to wash away past sins. For all romantics, Loi Krathong is your time to make a wish

for happiness and success. (source: wikipedia.org)

benefit. Benefits can include clarity of mind, self-awareness, calmness and a feeling of well being. It’s an internal practice isolated to the

individual. Although centres exist to offer guidance, meditation is a personal journey and

not influenced by external factors.

Meditation has been used for thousands of years and early records show Buddhists began

to develop meditation practices as early as 500 BC. The focus is on quieting the mind and

relaxing the mind & body. More recently, doctors prescribe meditation for anxiety, insomnia and to prevent heart problems and high blood pressure.

Results of meditation are often an increase in concentration, the ability to relax more easily and physical & mental well-being. There are a number of different styles of meditation. It’s

important to choose what best suits your needs and what philosophy best suits your goals. Visit

www.nunamornpun-kohphangan.com for options.

ABOUT KOH PHANGAN

DISCOVER KOH PHANGAN'S MOST beautiful BEACHES

Koh Phangan has a contrasting landscape and a diverse range of beaches. There are idyllic white sandy beaches stretching around

the island varying in atmosphere but all offer beautifully clear waters. Due to the tidal nature of Phangan, the best beaches for

swimming tend to be on the north and east coasts.

Whichever point on the compass you head for, you will be treated to gorgeous coves and sandy stretches ideal for visitors seeking privacy, beach games or for those just happy to laze and take in

the palm fringed scenery.

Ao Haad Mae Haad Beach (West) Mae Haad beach and sand bar to Koh Ma Island located in the North of Koh Phangan is a popular spot and a must see for all visitors to the Phangan Island. At low tide, it’s possible to walk along the sand bar from Haad Mae Haad to Koh Ma. Bring your snorkel and mask, the area is rich in marine life with vibrant coral and a wealth of undersea life.

Ao Chaloklum Beach (North) A long stretch of coastline which is suitable for swimming and snorkeling. A great place to relax and watch local fishermen arrive and depart in their long tail boats. Plenty of good seafood restaurants. Chaloklum is Koh Phangans 2nd largest settlement, a laid-back little fishing village on the north coast of the island.

Ao Bottle Beach - Haad Khuad (North) Accessible by boat from Chaloklum or by road from Thong Nai Pan, this well-known beach is worth the trip! The crescent shaped cove is one of the most scenic places on the Phangan island. The wide, white sandy beach is surrounded by lush mountain greenery. Bottle Beach is the more stunning of the two bays but Haad Khom is still worth a visit.

Ao Thong Nai Pan Beach (North-East) The North and South beaches of Thong Nai Pan offer a stunning mountain backdrop and a true taste of paradise. This area has become a favorite hangout for those seeking the ultimate chill-out spot with its friendly, laid back feel. A nice wide beach for swimming and beach games.

Haad Than Sadet (East) Haad Than Sadet sits past a rocky headland and is a large but relaxed beach cove with year-round great swimming conditions. The remoteness makes it perfect for a romantic getaway. Don’t miss the famous and beautiful Than Sadet Waterfall.

FULL MOON

PARTYDO’S & DONT’S!!Upcoming Full Moon Party Dates:

Sept.08 / Oct.08 / Nov.06 / Dec.06

Despite the size and madness of the party, there are relatively few problems. But in recent years, the party has gained attention in the media for drug use and petty crimes. Problems common

at any event so large. The local community and businesses are trying to combat any negative

influences. That said, it’s truly remarkable with tens of thousands of intoxicated people partying on a beach, that the vibe is still overall one of

enjoyment and happiness.

What makes the Full Moon Party unique and true to Thai style is that it’s still not organised or

owned. It remains a big spontaneous party on the beach. It was never marketed, or advertised. It

began as a group of friends and grew organically, spread by word of mouth, passed on from

traveler to traveler, into a massive celebration that has become legendary across the world.

That still today no one owns this massive mon-ey-making party is testament both to the relaxed

character of Thailand and to the magic of Koh Phangan. People come to the Full Moon Party

for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and that is undoubtedly what they get: The chance to be a part of a phenomenon, created and sustained by

people who love to party, which has been legendary for more than 2 decades.

DON’T ...take anything you’re not prepared to lose. You never know what’s going to happen so leave valuables like iPhones, fancy cameras, and passports at home. If you are intending to get really wasted and need a phone, buy a cheap one before you go. Take a throwaway camera and a reasonable amount of cash, hidden on different parts of your body, and a back-up credit card as long as you have another at home. Keep valuables in the safe at your bungalow.

DO ...Be aware of what you’re drink-ing. The number 1 problem on party night is getting too inebriated. Be aware of how inebriated you feel. Sangsom drunkenness can come on hard and fast. Intersperse with soft drinks, water and chill-out breaks. Don’t put your drink down or accept drinks from strangers.

DON’T ...get on a moped for any reason. Westerners on mopeds are accidents waiting to happen and the roads are full of dangerous and drunk drivers. The roads are dangerous on party night, please improve your chances by taking a taxi or walking if possible.

DO ...Know where you’re staying. Have the contact information of your guest house and the contact info of a responsible friend or Thai person at your guest house that can help you if you get into any problems. You wouldn’t believe the numbers of lost people the next morning in Haad Rin.

Angthong Marine Park is a stunning archipelago which consists of over 40 small islands. The protected and uninhabited park is situated west of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. The islands are made from limestone and feature tropical rainforests and jaw-dropping rock faces. Plenty of exotic species call these islands their home including otters, langurs, crab-eating monkeys, hogs, bats, 54 species of birds, lizards, iguanas,

turtles, pythons, frogs and cobras. The waters are home to butterfly fish, angel fish, parrot fish, blue-spotted fantail rays, snappers, groupers, sea slugs, blue swimming crabs, sea fans, sea whips, giant clams, oysters,

and coral which makes for some incredible snorkeling!

All of the islands are uninhabited and undeveloped except for 2: Ko Wua Talap and Ko Paluay, which is inhabited by sea gypsies who earn

a living off fishing. On Ko Wua Talap island, you will find the park headquarters, tourist information, a restaurant, Buaboke Cave,

ANIMAL CARE

about strays & unwanted animalsThe increase of tourists to Koh Phangan has caused a greater availability of food. With the many animal-loving tourists feeding & caring for the animals, the pop-ulation has boosted to unnatural numbers. The stress of fighting for survival in this overpopulated environment results in many injuries to animals and humans.

Phangan Animal Care for strays Thankfully, Phangan Animal Care for Strays (PACS) - a non-profit org - provides much needed nursing to the islands many strays. They provide a neutering & vaccination service which has made a significant difference to population control.

how to report a sick or injured animal to PACSFor emergencies, call 089 875 7513. Otherwise, email [email protected] with the following details: problem, species, male/female, location (be specific with details of nearest resort, restaurant or landmark) and your contact details.

ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

help preserve this stunning diverse islandDid you know more than half of Koh Phangan island is designated as National Park? With over 80 km2 of pristine rain forest, diverse flora and fauna. Koh Phangan is a place to truly connect with nature. It’s no wonder the island is known as a spiritual place with numerous Buddhist temples, spas, retreats and meditation centres. It’s crucial we all help preserve this natural beauty - alongside the growing tourism on the island - for future generations.

help keep Koh Phangan beautiful! Here’s how:

• Join Green Cross Beach Clean on Facebook and join a beach clean! They usually host after parties with discounts on dinner & drinks so it’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded people too. Next beach cleans are: Oct 1st 2014

• Reduce your use of plastic & styrofoam! Do you need a plastic bag for every purchase? Try a recyclable bag and reduce the waste. Also remember styrofoam literally never decomposes.

• Participate in nature & marine conservation with Core Sea: volunteer, intern, donate & more! Visit www.coresea.com for all the details.

Clean up, donate, participate! Let’s keep Koh Phangan beautiful!

VISA QUESTIONS & INFORules are ever changing. Always seek advice whether it is from an

embassy, a travel agent or other backpackers. Official website www.mfa.go.th

HOW LONG IS THE VISA VALID FOR? On entering Thailand, you receive a visa on arrival. If flying into an

international airport, a 30 day visa will be granted (which can be extended for a further 30 days for 1900 Baht at any immigration office). If crossing the border overland you will be granted a 15-30 days stay. However, if you cross the border

(land or flying), you will NOT be granted an extension. You must apply for a new Tourist Visa at your nearest consulate or embassy outside of Thailand.

WHAT IF I WANT TO STAY IN THAILAND 3 MONTHS? It’s possible to apply for a Tourist visa in advance in either your home country or a neighbor country. This visa allows a stay in the Kingdom for a period of 60 days (which can be extended for a further 30 days for 1900 Baht at any

immigration office). Nearest immigration office: Koh Samui/Nathon.

DO NOT OVERSTAY YOUR VISA! It will cost you 500 baht/day with a max fine of 20,000 baht, even prison terms!

CAN I EXTEND MY VISA? AND HOW? Visa Extensions: Nearest immigration office: Koh Samui. If you have a visa on arrival for either 30 or 15 days then you can extend your exit date for 7 days for 1900 baht. If traveling on a 60 day Tourist visa it’s possible to extend your stay

by 30 days for same price. Malaysia Border Run: from Thongsala, takes 1 day, you will be back in Koh Phangan around 8:30pm. Cost for minibus to Malaysian border is 1400 baht, but you will need to pay for your boat tickets separately.

APPLYING FOR A 60 DAY VISA: 60 days visa is an option for longer term stays (can then be extended by 30 days if required). You will have to visit the Thai consulate in another country and fill out the necessary paperwork. Penang in Malaysia is the most popular

and quickest way.

STAY CONNECTEDwith a

THAI SIM CARD

Activating international roaming on your mobile phone to keep in touch with family & friends can cost a fortune. A better solution is to purchase a local SIM card for lower call rates. Here's a guide

to help you find the best SIM card for your needs.

Benefits of using a Thai SIM Card:• Cheap and easily available

• Buying SIM Cards in Thailand is based on the popular pay as you go system helping you manage your finances effectively

• There are a variety of packages and plans to suit different customers

• A local Thai SIM card offers cheaper rates both for domestic and international calls. Making calls within the same network works out to be cheaper especially for calls within Thailand

• You can give the number to family and friends even before you travel

• Easy top up options online or using the Scratch cards with the unique PIN

• Easy to install, setup and use

Which companies provide Thai SIM Cards? When you set out to buy a Thai SIM card, you want a legitimate company with hassle free service. There are several carriers in Thailand but the 3 main mobile telecom companies in Thailand are AIS, DTAC and True.

Before you buy a local SIM card to use in Thailand, first check if your phone is locked (your mobile company can restrict the phone from another company’s SIM card). If so, many phone shops in Thailand can unlock your phone for a small fee.

Where to buy a Thai SIM card? The first and most convenient destination to purchase a Thai SIM card is at the airport at most 7-Eleven's. Otherwise, there are plenty of telecom companies which have great experience in handling tourists and all their queries. Also, mobile phone shops keep local SIM cards.
