PGH™ Sandstocks

At PGH Bricks™, we are proud to cling to an important part of our history – the time honoured brick making technique associated with producing our sandstock bricks. For many years, our Brickmaster has evolved and perfected the manufacturing process to keep this tradition going.

Sandstocks are a niche product. They have a unique look and feel and are different to the mass produced extruded bricks with their solid composition. Unlike extruded bricks, Sandstocks do not have holes, they have a frog (an indent).

Sandstocks are something special and we find once people build with a sandstock, they are an advocate for life.

Something Special

Raw materials are a key component of the perfect brick, and their purity is the base that provides the beautiful tonal variation within the products.Clay and shale are stockpiled in our yard, and they are unique to our factory at Horsley Park. Most of the raw materials have been used since the factory opened in 1972, and the skill of our Brickmaster is such that he can make bricks nearly 30 years on that are almost a perfect match.

Sandstocks are made by wet clay being dropped into sawdust lined moulds, a process which became automated in 1982. Prior to this, the bricks were manually removed from an individual mould onto a drying tray. With this new technology, we were careful not to compromise the bricks’ unique texture and irregular arrises. Afterall, this is the appeal of the product.

How are these special bricks made?

Like loaves of bread, our green (unfired) bricks are then placed into drying chambers for up to three days. This is to remove excess moisture and prevent cracking in the kiln.

What types of Sandstock are available?

On removal from the dryers, our sandstocks are then placed into the kiln. The Hoffman kiln is the last of its kind in Australia. Rather than have the products moved through the kiln by mechanical process, the stacks are put into the chambers and the fire is moved. The temperatures can get as hot as 1100 degrees in the two and half days they take to cook.

After around eight days of being made, the products are then hand blended and sorted to pallets. Each product is touched by the hand of man – no other bricks have this unique feature. With the pallets hand blended, they are then added to our yard awaiting their destination call. Quite often, we have customers visit our yard to personally select which pallets they want to use. Sandstocks

Our Roman Split 50mm range of products is becoming a popular product, and is a departure from our standard 76mm size bricks. With both European and American design influences, we are seeing an increase in the demand of these products.

There are more bricks used in the face of the wall but it creates a spectacular finish. And if you like the look of the 50mm size but your budget is a bit tight, use it on your front façade with the standard size on the sides and back.

While we have a standard range of 50mm products, basically any sandstock can be produced in this format for the same cost as a standard size.

The traditional 76mm ranges of sandstocks have been produced by PGH for many years. Others have tried to replicate the uniqueness of the product which is most similar to the convict bricks of old, but none have been completely successful.

The majority of our 76mm products have the traditional mottling of colour throughout the face, but we have recently introduced an architectural range of products that is monotone with a more square arris. To enable the creation of beautiful architectural structures, a range of shapes is also available.

GreenwayThese thrown products are naturally beautiful, with a texture that captures the essence of the earth. Today’s PGH Sandstocks still reflect the traditional brick making methods, with products being cast in sawdust-lined moulds to produce their individual texture. This process results in unrivalled, individual hand made character.

Named after some of the world’s most celebrated artists, the Masters collection celebrates the art of traditional brick making based on our many years of brick making experience. And like the works of these great masters, each brick produced in the Masters collection is touched by the hand of our brick makers.

With their extraordinary texture and timeless beauty, these bricks are available in the standard 76mm height or the increasingly popular 50mm splits. The Masters collection is accompanied by different shapes to enable you to create your own masterpiece.

Cleaning InformationBrick cleaning is a specialist trade and should only be undertaken by a professional to decrease the potential for damage to the face of your beautiful bricks. Brick cleaning is an aggressive trade – the chemicals and high water pressures used can easily damage the product if not done correctly.

The use of “General Purpose (GP)” cement is recommended, not “General Blended (GB)” cement. General blended cements can contain fly ash, kiln slag and other materials which may potentially stain brickwork.

For cleaning information regarding sandstock products, refer to Think Brick Australia’s “Cleaning Masonry” publication (downloadable from www.thinkbrick.com.au) and PGH Bricks’ “Brick Cleaning Supplement”.

MortarIn order to highlight the beauty of your sandstock bricks, PGH recommend the use of a Raked

mortar joint.

Colour VariationPGH™ bricks are made from clay and, as a result, have a natural variation in colour, texture, composition and size. While this produces bricks of great beauty and character, we strongly recommend that bricks with the same batch number be used on your project and that all

the bricks you need are delivered in one consignment.

Blending of ProductPGH™ recommend that bricks should be carefully blended from at least four different pallets at the time of laying to provide a blended mottle of colour

and texture.

Salt Attack Resistance (Exposure Grade)Bricks are most commonly classified into two categories

for Salt Attack Resistance:

1. Exposure Grade – the product is suitable for a saline or severe marine environment.

2. General Purpose – the product is suitable for general environmental conditions but not in saline or marine environments.

A severe marine environment is defined as up to 1km

from a surf coast or up to 100m from a non-surf coast.

A marine environment is defined as from 1km to 10km from a surf coast or between 100m and 1km from a non-surf coast.

WarrantyPGH™ do not warrant that our clay products will match any sample, sample wall or brochure. The brick colours shown in this brochure are an indication only and may be different from the actual product. It is a good idea to confirm the availability and view the latest batch colours at one of our Selection Centres before making your decision, and always check the delivered packs as soon as possible. All warranty claims must be made prior to the product being laid.

Terms of SalePGH™ is unable to accept liability for costs incurred as a result of failure or delay in delivery of the product. For a complete copy of our Terms of Sale, please contact a PGH Selection Centre for terms and conditions.

Dust from brick cutting may contain respirable particles which may also include crystalline silica. In the short term silica dust can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. Long term exposure can cause silicosis. People who have developed silicosis may have an increased risk of lung cancer. If the need exists to cut, drill or saw bricks, it is recommended that a wet process is used. For dry cutting a dust extractor unit is required, and an approved mask (respirator) should also be worn.
