The startling breakthrough was hailed by parties on all sides of the stem cell debate because it raised the prospect that the controversial destruction of human embryos and the need to harvest eggs from women donors might one day no longer be needed. “This has the potential to re- shape the politics and science of stem cell research,’’ said Jesse Rey- nolds, a policy analyst for the Cen- ter for Genetics and Society, an Oakland-based organization that favors stem cell studies. The Rev. By Brian Hoffman Chronicle Staff Writer Nearly 100,000 pounds of live Dungeness crab apparently caught by Oregon fishermen near the Farallones are headed to Bay Area seafood wholesalers for dis- tribution to consumers — a major blow to local commercial fisher- men. Hundreds of fishermen in San Francisco, Bodega Bay and Half Moon Bay have been desperately trying to keep untested crab off dinner plates in the wake of the Cosco Busan fuel spill in San Fran- cisco Bay. They have pledged not to harvest crab until the state con- firms the Dungeness are not con- taminated. The state Office of Environ- mental Health Hazard Assessment has taken crabs for testing from ocean waters outside the Golden Gate. Results are due Nov. 28. The Department of Fish and Game says that Dungeness caught outside a closed area of coastline between San Mateo and Marin counties is safe to eat.
