Separate teams of scientists ontwo continents revealed Tuesdaythat they have created stem cellsfrom human skin cells — a devel-opment that eventually could al-low researchers to sidestep thecontentious moral issues that havehobbled early studies in a promis-ing field.
The startling breakthrough washailed by parties on all sides of the
stem cell debate because it raisedthe prospect that the controversialdestruction of human embryosand the need to harvest eggs fromwomen donors might one day nolonger be needed.
“This has the potential to re-shape the politics and science of
stem cell research,’’ said Jesse Rey-nolds, a policy analyst for the Cen-ter for Genetics and Society, anOakland-based organization thatfavors stem cell studies.
The Rev. Thomas Berg, execu-tive director of the Westchester In-stitute, a Catholic ethics think tankin Thornwood, N.Y., said the newtechnique described in the two pa-pers is a major advance that passesethical muster. “This is almost amagical moment,’’ he said. “We

HUD Regional Director Rich-ard Rainey asked the agency’s in-spector general to begin an inves-tigation in response to a story inThe Chronicle on Sunday report-ing that, for decades, the late Yu-suf Bey allegedly directed his fol-lowers to defraud state and federalaid programs for poor people.

Nearly 100,000 pounds of liveDungeness crab apparentlycaught by Oregon fishermen nearthe Farallones are headed to BayArea seafood wholesalers for dis-tribution to consumers — a majorblow to local commercial fisher-men.
Hundreds of fishermen in SanFrancisco, Bodega Bay and HalfMoon Bay have been desperatelytrying to keep untested crab offdinner plates in the wake of theCosco Busan fuel spill in San Fran-cisco Bay. They have pledged notto harvest crab until the state con-firms the Dungeness are not con-taminated.

mental Health Hazard Assessmenthas taken crabs for testing fromocean waters outside the GoldenGate. Results are due Nov. 28.
