    PGCE and School Direct Secondary Education: Interview Information

    ARRIVING

    You should arrive at the Checkland Building at the time indicated on your invitation . Onarrival, please report to the School of Education Office in the Checkland building, roomA306, where you will have your documents checked. This will be followed by the introductorysession with the Admissions Tutor and the admissions tasks.

    DOCUMENT CHECKING

    In order for an offer to be processed it is imperative you bring the followingdocuments with you:

    1. Original GCSE certificates (or equivalent), and a photocopyfor our records, for Mathsand English Language at grade C or above.

    2. Original degree certificate and a photocopyfor our records if you have alreadygraduated. Applicants who are still completing their degree will be required to show theirdegree certificates as soon as they are available and before the course starts inSeptember.

    3. A completedDocument Check FormPlease make sure this form is completedclearly and includes the status of your Professional Skills Tests.

    4. A completed ITE Self Declaration FormWe are not able to make any PGCE/SchoolDirect offers without making the checks as detailed on the ITE Self Declaration form, soit is essential that you fill this in carefully, having read the guidance in full. Thecompleted form must be sealed in an envelope(no envelopes with transparentwindows please). On the front of the envelope you must print your full name and UCASTeacher Training ID number. This is a highly confidential document and it can only beconsidered by those who need to access it in the course of their duties.

    5. A passport size photograph to be left for identification purposes (please write your nameon the reverse of the photo).

    6. The original and aphotocopy of EITHER a passport or a photocard driving licence. Ifyou are bringing your passport please photocopy the back page where your photographappears.

    Please note: no unconditional offers can be made until the documentation namedabove has been seen.

    If you have overseas qualifications we would recommend you have these assessed byNARIC for their UK equivalence and bring your NARIC comparison document with you

    ADMISSIONS TASKS (Including details of the presentation you will need to prepare)

    Individual interview times will be allocated on the admissions day, but you should expect thatthe whole process may take up much of your day depending on the number of candidatescalled. After your individual interview you will be free to leave.

    Following your document check and an introductory session you will be required to:

    1. Complete a writing task2. Make a 5 minute presentation3. Participate in an individual interview

    1. Writing TaskThe writing task is a timed free writing exercise in response to a stimulus article which weprovide. We allow 30 minutes for this exercise and if a candidate has declared dyslexia ontheir application this is taken into account when grading. Writing is graded using thefollowing criteria:

    Critical perspective Response and vocabulary

    Structure and Spelling

    2. Individual PresentationYou will need to prepare a 5 minute presentation based on oneof the following:

    What does it mean to be a professional in school?

    How would you support and encourage children to be independent learners?

    What makes for creative teaching?

    What are the key challenges for teachers in relation to inclusion and diversity?

    How will you promote good and courteous behaviour in your classroom and aroundthe school?

    Your presentation will be assessed against the following criteria:

    1. The ability to present in a coherent, clear, lively and informative manner whilstengaging and communicating confidently with the audience within the specified timelimit.

    2. The ability to make effective use of reference to your school experience, classroompractice and/or reading and research.

    3. The ability to demonstrate some critical understanding of the area in question.

    Please note that we expect these will be fit for purpose and your audience will be the rest ofthe presentation group, around 4 -10 people. Your presentation style should reflect yourability to communicate effectively. You will have no access to ICT for this presentation,although we do encourage the use of other prepared materials such as posters, photographsetc. There are whiteboards in most rooms, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee theiravailability and you would need to provide your own pens.

    3. Individual InterviewYour interview will be with a course tutor, and possibly a representative from one of ourpartnership schools.

    TRAVEL INFORMATION

    Note: University of Brighton, Falmer campus is opposite Sussex University and islocated next to the Amex football stadium.

    Travel by bus:The Falmer site is served by the Unibus number 25. This service stops at the campus itself.Alternatively, buses travelling northward to the University of Sussex, or to Lewes from theOld Steine and St Peters Church will put you down at the University of Sussex; the Falmersite of the University of Brighton is opposite (there is a tunnel under the road). For moreinformation please consult with the Brighton and Hove Bus Company:(http://www.buses.co.uk/).

    Travel by train:Falmer station is on the BrightonSeaford line and is three stops from Brighton Station.Trains run approximately three times an hour. From the station take the exit markedUniversity of Brighton, and walk up the hill, past the rugby pitch. For further details, checkwith Southern Railway (http://www.southernrailway.com/)

    Travel by car:Unfortunately, there is no visitor parkingavailable on the Falmer site for applicants andtheir families. Parking at Falmer is for permit holders only and there is an external companythat will issue parking fines for cars that do not hold a permit. We suggest that applicantscoming by car use the car parks in central Brighton, and then travel to Falmer by train asdetailed above. The car park at Brighton station costs approximately 12 per day.

    We regret that the Universi ty cannot h elp with travel l ing expenses.

    PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TESTS

    The Department for Education has introduced Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and

    Numeracy for all applicants to teacher training (QTS) routes. These tests are compulsory,

    and it will not be possible to enter training without having successfully completed them. If

    invited to interview we recommend that postgraduate applicants have passed the skills tests

    before attending as this will give them a clear advantage. The University of Brighton

    recognises that these tests may present a real challenge to some candidates and we

    recommend that you prepare carefully before attempting them, as you are currently limited to

    only three attempts per test.
