Functions of the PLB

Statutory authority jointly responsible with the Minister for

Lands for administering pastoral leases in accordance with the

1997 Land Administration Act.

Two broad functions:

1. Regulatory administration of pastoral leases to ensure

ecological sustainability

2. Strategic advice to Minister for Lands*

Feedback from Broome meeting

We need the PLB to focus on:

1. Clarifying what development and diversification is permissible under current legislation and lease agreements

2. Streamlining approvals processes – facilitating quicker more transparent processes across government departments

3. Security of tenure – exploring ways of increasing security of tenure for pastoral leases and allowing the transfer of diversification permits.

Next steps

1. Complete round of regional workshops

2. Continue work on streamlining interagency approval processes

3. Review and improve Pastoral Purposes Framework

4. Develop written advice for Minister

5. Continue working with industry
