PG:81A-1 His Lordship's Kindness (Poplar Hill) 7606 Woodyard Road Clinton Private
1780s
His Lordship's Kindness has a 2 1/2-story, five-bay wide main block
flanked by one-story hyphens and 1 1/2-story wings. The front (north) facade is
dominated by a three-bay projecting pavilion, crowned by a pediment containing
a large single fanlight set under a brick arch. The front entry in the center bay of
this pavilion, has a classic Adamesque frontispiece flanked by fluted pilasters
supporting a full Classical entablature and a pediment with a semicircular
window, and a Palladian window on the second floor above the front entry.
Flanking the front door are narrow 8/8 sash windows, two panes wide. On the
second floor the Palladian window has 9/6 panes with an arched traceried top
flanked by two-pane wide 4/4 sash windows. The rear facade is very similar, but
without a projecting pavilion or pediment on the roof, and without the Adamesque
frontispiece. Here a 6-panel door is topped by a traceried fanlight. The hip roof is
revealed on the rear (south) facade to be a double hip, with 6/6 sash gabled
dormers facing inward and outward on each east and west face. Massive
chimneys rise from near the center of the hip on both the east and west sides,
and a dentil cornice surrounds the roof edge. Windows on the main block are 9/9
sash with flat-arched brick lintels and louvered shutters. The east and west
facades hold two 919 windows on the second floor and one on the first floor in the
front bay, the rear bay being occupied by the hyphen in each case. The four 3/3
cellar windows on either side of the main block are covered with iron grates and
surmounted by segmental brick arches. The gable-roofed one-story hyphens
each have a central 6-panel door flanked by traceried fanlights. The wings are
one bay wide, with a 916 window with a brick segmental arch on the first floor and
a fanlight on the second. The interior room arrangement is as formal and
balanced as the structure's exterior. The grand entrance leads into a large
center hall and elaborate stairway, which consumes almost one third of the floor
space. The formal parlor and dining room, located to the front of the house, are
separated by perpendicular hallways from the family's private rooms to the rear
of the house, which also allowed the servants to enter the rooms via the kitchen
rather than the formal space. The kitchen and the family's private Catholic
chapel are kept apart from the social spaces where guests are received by their
locations in the wings to either side. The interior finishes include an elegant, two
run, open-well stairway, decorative cornices and chair rail throughout, doorways
with dentiled pediments, and Federal-style mantels with fluted friezes and dentil
molding. To the front of the house is the carriage entry with a circular drive. The
rear of the house looks out over a terraced boxwood garden, beyond which lies a
family cemetery. The former plantation also includes a number of original
dependencies including a privy, smoke house, wash house, slave hospital, and
pigeon cote.
His Lordship's Kindness is one of the finest of a number of Georgian
plantation houses built by Prince George's county's wealthy planter class during
the late 18th century. Only His Lordship's Kindness and Montpelier, however,
incorporate the five-part plan which distinguishes Palladian-influenced, late-
Georgian design. Other distinctive Georgian features of the house include the
pavilion front, tripartite windows, and Flemish bond brick walls. The house was
built for Robert Darnall in the 1780s, on land acquired by his great grandfather,
Colonel Henry Darnall, in 1702.

His Lordship's Kindness has a two-and-a-half-story, five-bay-wide main block flanked by oncstory hyphens and one-and-a-half--story wings. The house has similar carriage front and garden rear facades, with a Palladian window on the second floor above the front entry. The northeast carriage front has a classic, Adamesque frontispiece flanked by fluted pilasters supporting a tult Classical cntablature and a pediiqent with a semi-circular faoliJbt and a pedimenred front pavilion wjtb a semi-circular window. The windows are nine-over-nino-light-sash with flat-arched brick lintels. The interior room arrangemeat is as formal and balanced as lhe structure's exterior. The crand entrance leads into a large center hall mi elaborate stairway, which consumes almost one-third of the floor space. The interior finishes include an elegant, tw<HUll, open-well s<airway, decorative cornices and chair rail throughout, doorways with dentiled pediments, and Federal-style mantels with fluted friezes and dentil molding.
The land on which the plantation house was built-a 7000 acre tract known u •Hi.s Lordship's Kindness "-was granted to Colonel Henry Darnall by Lord Baltimore (Charles Calvert) at the tum of the 17th century. The property passed in 1773 to Robcn Darnall, great-grandson of the Colonel, and it was he who built the present fme house in 1784-86. By this time, the plantation was known as Poplar Hill. Robert Darnall died without l'teirs in 1803, and the plantation passed during the 19th century through the families of nephews and nieces (the Sewells and Daingerfields), many of whom are buried in the family cemetery. In the 1930s Poplar Hill property was purchased hy Mrs. Chandler Hale; durin& the Hale's residence the north chapel wing was renovated and converted into a library, and the name of the property was changed back to His Lordship's Kindness. Since 1955, His Lordsbip•s Kindness has been the home of the Walton family and an operating horse farm; it is now operated by the J&S Walton Foundation.
This information about His Lordship's Kindness was sent to the library October 27, 1999, by Susan Pearl and is supposedly more accurate than the inventory form.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT ANO ORIGINA~ (If known) PHYSICAL APPEAllANCE
His Lordship's Kindncss•is a five-part composition with brick walls laid in a variety of bonds. The central block is 56 feet wide and 48 feet deep, with a hipped roof <lonnered in the rear an<l two large interior chimneys. The two balanced end-wings, one and a half stories high measure 15 by 20 feet. They are built at right angles to the main axis and arc covered by hipped roofs. The kitchen was located in the ·east (left) wing ., with the chapel in the west wing. This was remodeled into a study in the 1920's but the narrow interior balcony was left intact. The two connecting hyphens are one-story stnicturcs with gable roofs; the east curtain is 14-1/2 by 10 feet in size. The north (front) elevation of each end wing has one rectangular first floor window over whfch is a small semicircular window that is set under a brick arch. The two hyphens each have center doors that are flanked by a pair of larger fanlights, similar to those in the upper storit.·s of the end wings.
The north facade of the central block is dominated by a narrow projecting pavilion. The pavilion is crmmed by a pediment containing a large single fanlight set under a brick arch which matches the semicircular windows of the wings and hyphens. A low flight of stone steps leads up to the elaborate entrance portal, which is flanked on either side by a tall, narrow window. The center door, with fanlight above it, is recessed and the entire opening is framed by pilasters and a richly carved pediment. Above the doon·rny, in the second story, is a large Palladian window which is topped by round brick arches. The other windows of the facade are wider and have stone lintels below and flat brick arches above. First and second story windows are of equal size. The cornice and pavilion pediment are ornamented with finely carved <lentils. Tne south or garden f_acade lacks the central projecting pavilion of the front elevation, but has a similar Palladian window ~ct in the same position in the second story. The rear center door also has a fanlight above, but the entranceway is framed only by a brick arch and piers.
A center hall, the width of the front pavilion, extends through the house from front to rear. At midpoint the main hall is intersected by two narrow lateral halls that lead to the two wings. The four rooms on the first floor are located in each corner of the house and separated from each other by the main and cross halls. The main hall is divided at the halfway point by a wide sweeping arch. The wide stairway with carved balustrade and mahogany handrail is set in tl1e rear half of the main hall and is located against the east wall. The two doorways adjacent to the north door, leading into the dining room on the cast and parlor on the west have finely carvcid frames and arc surmounted by elaborate pediments. The two other main hall doors, set south of the arch and leading to the wings, also have carved frames and are topped by delicately leaded fanlights. The walls and cornices arc of plaster :md the wooden chair r::iil and baseboards arc carved. The main rooms of the first floor have carved wooden mantels.

The first floor plan is repeated on the second, where there are four bedrooms. The Palladian windows at each end of the second floor hall arc framed by Corinthian pilasters and adorned with beading and scroll work. The house, gardens, and grounds arc in good condition. Several original outbuildings, including the smoke house, wash house, the so-called slaves' hospital, pigeon cove, and privy are still in existence, as well as the rear gateway which led out to the plantation. The smoke house is a smal4one room brick building with a gable roof. The wash house is a frame hipped roof structure with one window in each of the end walls. The slaves' hospital is a slightly larger brick building with a window in the front wall next to the door. All of these buildings are lined along the path leading from the house to the plantation gates. Foundations for the slaves quarters and for what appear to be ov.erseers or managers residences are also evident and are currently undergoing excavation by the owner. The current excavation is located along this path as it turns to the south. A pigeon cove of frame construction is located east of this, just before the gates to the old plantation road. The original carriage house and spring house were removed by a previous 0\\11er and replaced with a modern structure to serve as a garage. There is also some intrusion of farm equipment but it is not evident froCT the house and is not out of keeping with the continuing function of the land as a~working farn. A modern gateway and stable have been built at the entrance to the property. Although the stable has a somewhat adverse effect from the road it is completely removed from the _house by winding, unpaved roadways which have been maintained in their original state, along with existing landscaping. These two features, to some extent, shelter the entire property from
·exterior intrusions and preserve the integrity of the house and its site.
The remaining 150 acres ·of the original estate is bounded on the east and south by the Piscataway creek, on the west by a cemetery and on tlY.::north by State Route 223, extending from the boundary. of the C€metcry to the point where it crosses the Piscataway creek, a distance of about .33 miles. The boundary is shown on the accompanying U.S.G.S. Map and with precision by the red line on the larger scale plat of the historic property.

The central block of His Lordship's Kindness, located in Prince Georges County, 3-1/2 miles west of Rosaryville, was built about 1735. Possibly I designed by a professional English architect, it is a superb ex~ttple of i an elegant, correct, and carefully detailed early Georgian country house. 1
With wings ar.d hyphens added near the end of the 18th-century, His I Lordship's Kindness is also an- excellent example of a late Georgian five- i part plantation house composition. The roof shape of this house is a I rare survival of the transitional form bet\\'een the gable and the full hip ,i or hip on hip roof. Several of the old plantation outbuildings exist I intact and the foundations of others are being gradually excavated by the · current mmers. Still run as a ,,·orking farm, the entire estate of His Lordship's Kindness provides a valuable suggestion of the working plantation of the mid-eighteenth century.
His Lordship's Kindness was erected at some date between 1731 an~ 1735 for Henry Darnall, I I I. It is said that the Earl of Shrewsbury sent an architect over from England to design the house as a present to his niece l and ward, Ann Talbot, on the occasion of her marriage to Darnall. The two synunetrical end-wings and two connecting hyphens which now make the house a five-part composition, were probably added near the end of the 18th century, possibly during the period when Robert Sewall owned the plantation. The house remained in the family until 1929, when it was sold at a bankruptcy sale to Mrs. Chandler Hale. After passing through several ownerships, the property was bought by the current owners in 1955.
