To give you a brief introduction about Kanpur -the city is situated on the banks of river Ganga.The climatic conditions are extreme, both,during winter (min. temperature 2- 6 C) andsummer (max. temperature 45-50 C). Thecampus is far from the hustle-bustle of the city
and is green and beautiful. It has all the facilitiesto make your stay memorable and enriching inmany respects.
There are several trains available from variousparts of India to Kanpur Central, the mainrailway station of Kanpur city.
IIT Kanpur is situated on the Grand Trunk Road
at Kalyanpur, about 17 km away from KanpurCentral. The following options are available forreaching the campus:
1. IIT Kanpur Institute buses ply betweenRailway Station / LIC building and the campus.The buses are available outside Platform 1.
2. Exit from Platform 9, take a cycle rickshawto Bada Chauraha or Parade (approximatelyRs 12/-) and then a tempo till IIT Kanpur gate(approximately Rs. 8/- per head). From IITKanpur Gate you may take a cycle rickshawagain to reach the hostels (about 2 kms away),the fare is Rs. 6/-. Please note that cyclerickshaws are not available in IIT Kanpur
campus after 8 pm.

3. Exit from Platform 9, take a tempo or autodirectly from the Kanpur Central to IIT Kanpurcampus. The fare is around Rs. 100/-depending upon the hour of the day. Nightcharges may be slightly higher.
The closest airport to IIT Kanpur is located inLucknow, about 90 kms away from Kanpur.There are to and fro flights from Lucknow to Delhiand Mumbai. There are pre-paid taxis availablefrom Lucknow airport to IIT Kanpur. Regular A/Cand non A/C buses also ply between Lucknowand Kanpur.
The main bus stand in Kanpur is called
Jhakarkatti and is located near Tatmill Chauraha.You can take an auto-rickshaw from the busstand to IIT Kanpur for approximately Rs 120/-.
IIT Kanpur is a fully residential campus and thereare eight hostels for boys and two for girls. Computer Facilities
P. K. Kelkar Library is one of the best libraries inthe nation, housed in a three-storied building
with a total of 6973 sq. m. floor area. The
library has a collection of more than 450,000volumes and subscriptions to more than 1,600
periodicals. This collection includes abstractingand indexing periodicals, microform and CD-ROM databases, technical reports, standardsand theses. The library timings are from 8:00am to 12:00 midnight on weekdays and 9:00am to 5:30 pm on Sundays and holidays.
Additionally, the library operates round theclockduring the examinations.
The Institute has a 1 Gbps Internet connectionand a 2 Mbps ERNET connection that areavailable to the students. Every hostel room isequipped with a 1 Gbps LAN connectionproviding round the clock Internet and Intranet
connectivity. IIT Kanpur has a centrally located
Computer Centre having over 300 PCs withLinux and Windows as operating systems. TheComputer Centre also offers printer facilities fornominal charges. Students are provided emailaccounts with 500 MB disk space.

A state-of-the-art Language Laboratory withcomputer controlled audio video componentsforms an important part of the languageeducation in the Institute. Courses are conductedfor teaching English language and also foreign
languageslike French, German and Japanese.
The on-campus Institute Health Centre (HC) isequipped with a clinical lab, ECG facility, aradiology unit, a 30-bed indoor ward and apharmacy. Emergency care is provided round theclock. Homoeopathic treatment is also available.
The HC may also refer students to medicalfacilities in the city but any hospitalization costoutside the HC has to be partially borne by thestudent.
Housed in an imposing double-storey buildingand located at a central place, Visitors' Hostelprovides boarding and lodging facilities for theInstitute guests and visitors, newly appointedfaculty, parents of students, staff members,delegates and participants attending variousc o nf e re n ce s , s e mi n ar s , s y mp o si a a n dworkshops.

A railway reservation counter is located nearthe IIT Kanpur main gate. The working hoursare from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 2:15 pmto 8:00 pm on working days. On Sundays, thecounter is open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The Shopping Complex offers a host of storesfor the general needs of the student communitynamely, chemist, hairdresser, dry-cleaners,bakery, sweets shop, stationary stores, general
provision stores, electrician, and tailor. Thecomplex also has a Post Office and a TelecomCentre.

IIT Kanpur follows a two-semester system. Anacademic year runs from July to April. The firstsemester begins by the last week of July and endsin the last week of November. The secondsemester starts in the last week of December andends in the last week of April. A semester load is
defined as equivalent of 16 units. Most coursescarry 4 units,whilea few carry 3 or5 units.
The Dean of Academic Affairs (DOAA) headsthe academic administration of the Institute. TheInstitute offers courses in various disciplines ofengineering, science and humanities, both at UGand PG levels. These programs are planned andimplemented by the Academic Senate through
the Senate UG Committee (SUGC) and theSenate PG Committee (SPGC). In addition tothese two committees, the Senate has a number
of standing Committees such as the SenateScholarships and Prizes Committee (SSPC) andthe Senate Students' Affairs Committee (SSAC).All committees have representation from thestudent community.
The Institute follows a continuous evaluationmodel through a credit system in all its programs.The student is awarded a letter grade for eachcourse in which he/she is registered. There is noannual/semester pass or fail. However, a studenthas to satisfy the minimum CumulativePerformance Index (CPI) and earn creditrequirements to be eligible for the award of
degree. In case of unavoidable circumstances, astudent may be allowed to give a make-upexamination.

Grading System
Each course is assigned a numerical weight.Each letter grade carries numerical points. A listof these letter grades with the correspondingnumerical points is given in Table 1.
For courses without any numerical grading,
students are awarded either a S (Satisfactory)or X (Unsatisfactory) letter grade depending onthe instructor's assessment of the student'sprogress in the semester.
The performance of a student at the end of
every semester is evaluated in terms of theweighted average of grade points secured in allregistered courses for that semester and isknown as Semester Performance Index (SPI).The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI)represents the weighted average of gradepoints secured by a student in all the semestersup to and including the last semester. The
method of calculation is the same as for SPIexcept that an F grade which has been replacedby a pass grade is ignored in the calculation.

Requirements For Graduation
A student shall be deemed to have completedthe requirements forgraduation if he/ she has:
Passed all the prescribed courses.
Attained the minimum required CPI (seeTable 2).
Satisfied the minimum academic andresidence requirements (see Table 3).
Satisfied all requirements specified by theconcerned department, if any.
Satisfied all requirements specified by theSenate and the Ordinances. In addition thestudent should have paid all the dues to the
Institute and should have no pending caseof indiscipline.

The Dean of Students Affairs (DOSA) headsvarious students' welfare related activities.
The Counselling Service of IIT Kanpur ensureswelfare of the students on the emotional,academic and financial fronts. The CounsellingService is a completely voluntaryorganization comprising of faculty advisors,counsellors and student guides.The Counselling Service conducts the followingactivities throughout the year:

Financial Counselling Orientation Program
The Service arranges financial assistance forneedy students in the form of loans andscholarships from the Students BenevolenceFund (SBF). Short and medium term loans aregiven from this fund. Sixty scholarships @ Rs.
1200/- permonth are also awarded to needystudents who are unable to get financialsupport from the Institute or any other source.SBF also supports medical expenses ofstudents to a certain limit.

The Students' Gymkhana is a studentorganization seeking to cultivate qualities ofleadership amongst students to foster acorporate life and to advance the general causeof the student body of the Institute. TheStudents' Gymkhana functions mainly through
the Students' Senate and its sub-committeesand the Executive Councils of the President, theGames Secretary, the Cultural Secretary andt he F il m & M ed ia C ou nc il S ec re ta ryrespectively. All the representative posts of theGymkhana are decided by annual elections.The Gymkhana President, Cultural Secretary,Science and Technology Secretary, Film &

The President is the chief executive of theGymkhana and chairman of the PresidentialCouncil. He supervises and coordinates theaffairs of the general body. The aim of thePresidential Council is to help the President in
discharging his duties and any other duty asmay be assigned by the Senate. Besides these,the following activities come under the purviewof the Presidential Council:

PrayasWith two issues in a semester, Meander bringsto you campus happenings and some of themost enjoyable, invigorating and witty writingsfrom the IIT Kanpur student community.
The Student Activity Centre (SAC) Book Clubhouses a large number of books, ranging fromclassic English literature to modern fiction,comics, adventure, biographies, nonfiction,spirituality, Hindi books and more. Students
can register with the club for a nominal fee andissue books forreading.
Prayas is a humble attempt to further the causeof education. It is run by a group of IIT Kanpurstudents involved in teaching young childrenliving in and around the campus who havemissed out on a formal education due tofinancial or social constraints. Some of theirprojects include an evening school (runs 6 daysa week) and a community library.

IIT Kanpur has a great sports culture. Thecampus has a main stadium comprising of acricket field, an athletics track, basketball and
volleyball courts, a separate football andhockey ground, an indoor complex for table
tennis, badminton and squash, gymnasium,skating ring and an Olympic size swimmingpool. The Students' Gymkhana also supportsthe following three clubs under the GamesCouncil:
This club organizes activities like trekking, rock-
climbing, mountain-climbing, river rafting andskiing. In the recent past, the club has organizeda cycling expedition from Shimla to Kaza and atrek to the Khatling glacier.
This club promotes the ancient Korean martialart of Tae-kwon-do. The club has won manylaurels for the Institute at national and state-level championships. Several students haveachieved the black belt Dan grade and evenproceeded to become National Referees.
This club caters to the needs of those captivated
by the lure of nature. The club organizessanctuary visits to gather information aboutflora and fauna and nature trails. The sereneand idyllic IIT Kanpur campus provides thisclub with ample scope to carry out theiractivities.

The Cultural Council under the Students'Gymkhana undertakes a wide range ofactivities suitably spanned over the whole year.
The Council arranges several festivals oncampus such as Freshers' Night, a host of inter-hall events and hobby clubs. Students are alsoencouraged to participate in activitiesorganized by other colleges of the country. Thefollowing clubs come under this council:

The Quiz Club organizes regular quizzes andtwo quiz events - Freshers' Quiz and Quiz ProQuo conducted by reputed quiz-masters. Theclub, on occasion, also sponsors its membersfor participation in quizzing events across the
country.
Vivekananda Samiti is a platform for peoplewho are seeking answers to the true meaning of
life. It is a confluence of all the religions,languages and beliefs, and not just belonging toor concerned with a particular sect/community.
IIT Kanpur has one of the oldest and mostactive SPIC-MACAY chapters in the country.Recently, the SPIC-MACAY chapter at IITKanpur organized a vocal concert by ShubhaMudgal and a Kathak dance recital by ShovanaNarayan.

Films & Media Council (FMC) aims to providehigh quality entertainment to the students byscreening the very best of movies and through

The Animation Club helps students learn howto create their own animations and animated

The Science and Technology (S&T) Councilencourages students to showcase theircreativity and talent on the technological front.The various clubs under S&T are as follows:
This club is for electronics enthusiasts. The aimof the club is to introduce students to challengesin the fields of circuit design and hardwareanalysis through lecture series, workshops,quizzes, demonstrations and student projects.
At the Ham Club, students use tools such as
transceiver, antennae and other equipment tomake contact with hams around the world. Theclub also builds its own communicationequipment and organizes the very popular FoxHunt event at several festivals on campus.
The Astronomy Club organizes regular nightsky observation sessions where the membersare taught to identify the various constellations,stars and planets, estimate the magnitude(brightness) of the stars, use a telescope, andsearch for deep sky objects. Essentially the clubserves as a forum for all interested in astronomyto meet and to learn from one another.

Galaxy: This is the Annual Inter-hall culturalevent held in March. It provides a stage for
showcasing talent, unity,e n e r g y , a n d t h ecompetitiveness among halls.The events range from literary,to fine arts, to high profilestructure designing and manymore.

The Students' Senate is the central body of theGymkhana and serves as the main forum forthe expression of students' opinions. It is thecentral policy making body and sets guidelinesfor effective functioning of the executive wings
of the Gymkhana. Senators are elected fortenure of one year. The senators elect their ownSenate Convener. The Senate also has its ownstanding committees that look into the variousmatters concerning students. A few of theimportant standing committees are:

Coordinates the activities of the studentrepresentatives in various UG Committees.The Committee consists of the UG studentrepresentatives to the SUGC, various DUGCs,

The COSHA supervises and coordinatesmatters of common interest to all Halls ofResidence. It consists of the President, theIncharge - Hostel Affairs, Hall Presidents and
Mess Secretaries of every Hall of Residence andtwo senators as Senate nominees. ThePresident is the chief executive of the Students'Gymkhana. The President and the Convener ofthe Students' Senate are special invitees to themeetings of the Institute Academic Senate.
Students are given representation in most of theexecutive bodies of the Institute.Students' Senate sends its nominees to the
following committees of the Academic Senate:
This committee advises the Director and theSenate on disciplinary cases.
These two committees have jurisdiction inmatters concerning the UG/PG programs of theInstitute, approval of new courses ofinstruction, desirable modification of existingcourses, admission of students, granting of
degrees, the conduct of examinations andevaluation of academic performance.
