PFE Polar Express 2011!

Save the date!

Thursday, December 15th

Ho…Ho…Ho… We are getting into the holiday spirit here at PFE, and need your help! Our annual Polar Express Day, where the magic of the holidays comes to life for our students, will be Thursday, December 15th! Many joyful memories are made on this day as we recreate the book, The Polar Express at PFE. In order for this event to be a success, our committee is in need of donations. One special event that we have been fortunate to have in the past is a Polar Express train. To make this train ride an opportunity for all our students, we need your support through donations. The train cost approximately $750. No gift is too small! If you are interested in donating, either as a parent, or a community partner/ business, please let me know. Send all donation inquiries to 4th grade teacher, [email protected]. All checks should be written to Pine Forest PTA. A tax charitable donation receipt can be provided for your donation. Donations are being accepted in the PFE front office through Friday, November 18th in order for us to schedule with the train company to bring this magical day to life. We also welcome other donations to set a festive Polar Express Day environment. Below is a list of helpful items! ALL items below will be graciously accepted through Tuesday, December 13th!

Humble ISD’s SchoolsHumble ISD’s SchoolsHumble ISD’s SchoolsHumble ISD’s Schools

Walking is great exercise. If you do walk to school, remember these tips:

WALK TOGETHER

• Parents should pick a safe route to school. Choose the safest routes to walk with the fewest and safest streets to cross.

• Young children should always walk with an adult.

• Create a “walking school bus.” A walking school bus is a group of students who walk with one or more parents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend one adult for every six children. If children are age 10 or older, fewer adults maybe needed.

• Use the “buddy” system and walk with a friend.

• Make sure you stick to the route you picked with your parents. Don’t take shortcuts.

• If you are bullied on your walk, tell your parent(s) and teacher.

LOOK FOR TRAFFIC

• Stop at the curb before crossing.

• Obey traffic signs/signals or school crossing guards.

• Look left, right, left and behind and in front of you for traffic before proceeding.

• Wait until there is no traffic before you begin crossing.

CROSS THE STREET SAFELY

• Don’t push, shove or chase each other at street corner crossings or near the street.

• Walk, don’t run, across the street.

• Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.

My School’s Cool

We are participating in the My School’s Cool program,

logging all of your shopping receipts from Deerbrook

Mall, and raising money for our school. (Deerbrook Mall

Stores, Kiosks/Carts, Food Court, and AMC Movies

count, too). You can log your receipts in 2 ways:

1. If you do not mind giving up your original

receipts: Drop your original receipts in the Pine

Forest “locker” located in the hallway outside of

Sears on the bottom level at the Mall. Receipts

will be collected weekly and logged.

2. If you prefer to keep your original receipts: There are 3 ways to log your receipts while you

are at the mall: 1) Stop by the Deerbrook Mall

info booth and get them to stamp your receipts

and get a points pass, 2) Stop by Barnes & Noble

and get a points pass after they verify your

receipt. 3) Ask your merchant to print you a

duplicate receipt when you check out. Duplicate

receipts and Points Passes can be dropped off in

the locker outside of Sears, in order to get credit

for your shopping.

Boxtop Winners! PFE would like to thank the following

students for collecting box tops for the Batty

with Boxtops Celebration on November 1, 2011.

There was a celebration on the patio for students to be recognized for their help collecting boxtops for the school. Students were given goodie bags to take home and enjoy.

Thank you all again for collecting the boxtops for the school.

Keep collecting for the Breakfast with Santa Celebration.

Stranger Danger Safety

Remind children:Remind children:Remind children:Remind children: • Stay with a group.

• If a stranger offers you a ride, say “NO!”

• If a stranger follows you on foot, get away from

him or her as quickly as you can. If a stranger

follows you in a car, turn around and go the other

direction.

• Never leave school with a stranger.

• Tell a trusted adult if a stranger is hanging around

the school, playground, or public restroom.

• Leave items and clothing that display your name,

so that a stranger can read it, at home.

• If you arrive home alone, call your mother, father

or other trusted adult to let them know you are

home and all right. Keep the door locked, don’t

open the door for strangers, and don’t tell

strangers that you are home alone.

• Never accept things from a stranger.

away.

The federal government will conduct the first nationwide test of

the Emergency Alert System (EAS) at 1:00 p.m. CST on Wednesday, November 9. The test will assess the effectiveness

and reliability of EAS to alert the entire country during a nationwide emergency. The test will last about three minutes.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will initiate

the test to simulate the President’s issuance of an Emergency Action Notification (EAN) message for a national emergency,

such as a nuclear attack, terrorist incident, or a national disaster.

The three-minute message on both radio and TV will repeat “This

is a test” several times, but the scrolling text message at the top of TV screens will read “The Primary Entry Point System has issued

an Emergency Action Notification for Washington, DC".

City and county Offices of Emergency Management in our area

are using the nationwide test as an opportunity to educate homeowners and businesses about regional disaster preparedness

and response. Residents can visit the www.readyhoustontx.gov website to learn how to “Make A Plan, Build a Kit, and Stay

Informed”.
