    THE COLLECT

O God, judge eternal, you love justice and hate oppression, and you call us toshare your zeal for truth. Give us courage to take our stand with all victims ofbloodshed and greed, and, following your servants and prophets, to look to thepioneer and perfecter of our faith, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives andreigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.FIRST READING Isaiah 5. 1-7

A reading from the prophet IsaiahI will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: my loved one had avineyard on a fertile hillside. He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted itwith the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress aswell. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit. Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my

vineyard. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done forit? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad? Now I will tell youwhat I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will bedestroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled. I will make it awasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. Iwill command the clouds not to rain on it. The vineyard of the Lord Almighty isthe nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And helooked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of

    distress.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

    RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 50.1-8, 23-24

Response: Show the light of your countenance, O Lord God of hosts, andwe shall be saved.

Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, you that led Joseph like a flock;Shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim, before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.

Turn us again, O God of hosts;show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.........R

You brought a vine out of Egypt;you drove out the nations and planted it.You made room around it,

and when it had taken root, it filled the land. The hills were covered with its shadowand the cedars of God by its boughs. It stretched out its branches to the Seaand its tendrils to the River...............................................................R

Why then have you broken down its wall,so that all who pass by pluck off its grapes? The wild boar out of the wood tears it off,

and all the insects of the field devour it.Turn again, O God of hosts, look down from heaven and behold;Cherish this vine which your right hand has planted, and the branch that you made so strong for yourself....................R

Let those who burnt it with fire, who cut it down, perish at the rebuke of your countenance.Let your hand be upon the man at your right hand,

the son of man you made so strong for yourself. And so will we not go back from you;give us life, and we shall call upon your name.................................R

    SECOND READING Hebrews 11.29-12.2

A reading from the letter to the HebrewsBy faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the

Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched round them for seven days. By faith the prostituteRahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who weredisobedient. And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, whothrough faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what waspromised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, andescaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and whobecame powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back theirdead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to bereleased so that they might gain an even better resurrection. Some faced jeers andflogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning;they were sawn in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in

sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and ill-treated the world was notworthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and inholes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of themreceived what had been promised, since God had planned something better for usso that only together with us would they be made perfect. Therefore, since we aresurrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that

hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance therace marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter offaith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.

    GOSPEL ACCLAMATIONAlleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! My sheep | hear my voice.I know them, and they | follow me. Alleluia.

    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL Luke 12. 49-59A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have abaptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it iscompleted! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tellyou, but rather division! From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided:father against sonandson against father, mother against daughterand daughter against mother,mother-in-law against her daughter-in-lawand daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. Healso said to the crowds, When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately

say, It is going to rain; and so it happens. And when you see the south windblowing, you say, There will be scorching heat; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you notknow how to interpret the present time? And why do you not judge foryourselves what is right? Thus, when you go with your accuser before amagistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be draggedbefore the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throwyou in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last

    penny.

For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflections on the ReadingsTodays readings are tough and uncomfortable. The reality is that events oftenconflict with our hopes and dreams. Communities, governments and

congregations let us down and may turn away from the divine vision, and we mayturn away from Gods vision for our own lives. Neither God nor we can avoid theconsequences of injustice, racism, and the personal and social sins that harm usand others. Even when we are doing our best to follow God, there are noguarantees that our path will be easy. But, through it all, if we remain awake tothis present moment the sacrament and sin alike of this moment we discoverhope beyond conflict and failure. Isaiah describes a love story gone awry. Thelover has given the beloved everything possible to flourish, but the beloved turnsaway from the love that gives life and fecundity. Saddened and distraught by thebeloveds wildness, the lover has no choice but to let the beloved suffer theimmediate consequences of turning away from love. Love does not compel butseeks to heal and transform. Even love has its limits. Love must contend with thefreedom of the beloved. The God-world relationship is truly relational anddynamic, not one-sided and compulsory. God cannot compel the world to reflectGods vision. When we turn away, Gods vision is diminished; Gods possibilitiesare limited and appear negative to those who have turned away from divine love. Our actions have consequences for God and ourselves, but love never gives up in

its quest for life abundant for us and others. The Gospel reading is trulychallenging. It suggests that our responses to Jesus message will lead topolarization and conflict. Jesus is a provocateur, not a peacemaker, in this passage.Jesus vision of an alternative world is so radical, and so threatening, that some

will turn against his followers. Jesus sees the possibility of martyrdom emergingfrom the violent actions of fearful and self-interested people. The Gospel is clearthat there is a cost to prophetic spirituality, but there is also a cost to pastoralministry that is so accepting that it turns away from corporate sin andinterpersonal misbehavior. Jesus words suggest that the source of conflict will befound in the various ways we interpret our present time. What do we notice as we

view the signs of the times? What is amiss in our culture, economics, politics, and even our Church community? Do radically different visions need always tolead to schism and conflict? Faithfulness requires us to keep our senses open andlook for Gods presence moving in our histories and the world around us. Godsvision is always both local and global, and personal and communal. God envisagesthe highest possibilities for this moment, but also for the social and planetarysystems that surround and nurture us. Stay awake. Strain your eyes toward Godsmessages hidden within the unfolding of history and our personal and

congregational lives. Adapted fromBruce G. Epperly (2013) http://processandfaith.org
