Discover Romania

Romania is located in the Southeastern Europe and is one of thebiggest states from this area. THE PRAHOVA County

The Prahova County is located in the historical region called Muntenia, with the capital city atPloiesti and it is the third most populated county from the country. Prahova is known also forthe touristic region, the Prahova Valley, located in northwestern region, and also for wine areaDealul Mare, with Tohani and Valea Calugareasca vineyards.The most important urban center from this county is Ploiesti city, known for oil processingindustry. Ploiesti is located 60 km of Bucharest and it has a large tradition in oil processing,being the place in which, in 1857, the first refinery in the world was built by the Mehedinteanubrothers. The petroleum fraction obtained in this refinery was used for the public lighting ofBucharest Municipality, which was the first town in the world with street lighting. Due to the oilindustry, Ploiesti city became the regional center of this area. According to the last 2011census, the city has 209945 population.Ploiesti city is the place in which in 1967, the transfer of Petroleum-Gas Institute fromBucharest was decided. Nowadays, there are located three important refineries: OMV PETROLLUKOIL, Vega-ROMPETROL.

• Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiesti was founded in Bucharest, in 1948, asPetroleum-Gas Institute. The Institute had, as a main aim, to train theengineers required by the petroleum and gas industry in Romania. In 1975was finished the transfer of Petroleum-Gas Institute of Ploiesti. In 1992, thePetroleum-Gas Institute of Ploiesti became University of Ploiesti, as newfaculties and sections in the fields of economic studies and humanitieswere set up. For a better definition of tradition and structure, in 1993 theUniversity of Ploiesti changed its name into ‘’Petroleum-Gas University ofPloiești”.

• The present academic structure of the Petroleum-Gas University ofPloiesti includes five faculties: the Faculty of Petroleum-Gas Engineering,the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Faculty ofPetroleum Refining and Petrochemistry, the Faculty of Economic Sciencesand the Faculty of Letters and Sciences.

Faculty of Petroleum Refining and Petrochemistry trainsspecialists who are part of the international elite of the industry.Around 7000 engineers, researchers, teachers and others fromRomania and also from 68 countries have graduated this faculty.We are proud to say that in any industrial location from Europe,Asia, Africa or U.S. there are specialists prepared in ourlaboratories. The graduates of this faculty can handle jobs asengineers in oil processing refinery, also in research institutesand design installations of chemical and petrochemicalindustries or as specialists in test laboratories of various oilcompanies and assessment of air quality, water or soil.

The academic year starts on 1st October and ends atthe end of July next year.

Each academic year is divided into two semesterslasting 14 weeks.

Each semester is followed by an examination period-4 weeks and in September there is a third period ofreview exams.

The Christmas Holiday (December-January) andSummer Vacation (August) each of them lasts 4weeks.

During the academic year, we have three freenational days: November 30th, December 1st, January24th, the second day after Easter, the first day afterWhitsuntide, 1st May and August 15th.

Academic Structure STUDIES

The education system from the European Unioncountries is structured according to the Bologna processwhich assures high standards for a coherent andarmonious development of higher education.The main reforms to the Bologna process provides astructuring of higher education on three levels:Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD’s degree. The systemoperates according to ECTS system in order to facilitatemobilities and to equal studies. The diploma supplementallows the comparison of diplomas from universities indifferent states.The Bachelor’s degree studies have a duration of eightsemesters for technical faculties and 6 semesters forhumanities faculties.The Master’s degree for technical faculties arestructured in 3 or 4 semesters, while humanitiesfaculties masters lasts 4 semesters.

How can you become a Student at Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiesti?

The selection of candidates will be done within the limits of the available places using the criterion of the average mark for the graduated studies.
