What is the driver?

Current standalone screens have exhibited: Questionable performance

Ratty or poorly sorted sands Heavy oil

Room for improvement regarding longevity in SASRoom for improvement regarding longevity in SAS completion conditions Susceptible to plugging in high fines content reservoirs Relatively low dirt retention

Design Constraints and Considerations

Maintain filtration efficiency Handle a wide range of particle sizes and solids concentrations

Damage tolerant Mechanically robust

Reduce design option limitations Reduce design option limitations Limited number of micron ratings Combine different weave types, if necessary

Goals of New Screen Design Increase dirt-holding capacity

The amount of solids that can build up on a filter before an excessive pressure drop is seenexcessive pressure drop is seen

High-plugging resistance Dramatic increase in life span, particularly in heavy oil

completions

Maintain mechanical integrity Design variability for each individual well or field Design variability for each individual well or field

Design Concept to Improve Retention

Use multiple layers of mesh Design number and rating of layers for a specific

particle size distribution Place larger pore mesh on the outside; finer mesh on

the insidethe inside Each layer filters smaller and smaller particles Final filtration mesh flow area is reserved for retention

of appropriate reservoir particles

Depth Filtration

Largely discredited due to old style materials Typically a media with non-uniform

pore structure Pore size control is virtually

impossible Tortuous production path Difficult or impossible to clean (back-

flush)

Conclusions

Concept works for heavy oil wells. Concept also works for conventional wells, not just heavy

oil. The higher the PSD uniformity coefficient and/or the greater

the percentage of fines the better the concept worksthe percentage of fines, the better the concept works. Applicable for SAS type completions but may also be used

in GP completions. Suitable for PoroFlex® expandable screen application
