EXPLORATION SYSTEM

Visualization technology

Exploration has traditionally

been hypothesis driven—based

on specific geological concepts

supported by a combination of

experience and a geoscientist’s

ability to visualize geologicalfeatures in the, often sparse, data

 that is available.

Success is commonly tied to past successes in a similar geological environment. However, it is almost certain

that future basins will be more complex and varied than current ones. By combining Petrel software’s inherent

visualization technology and probabilistic approach, it is possible to augment an explorationist’s existing

experience with a set of flexible, data-driven workflows. With the Petrel 2010 release, this concept extends

from concept to basin-to-prospect analysis.

Petrel 2010 easily handles datasets that range in size from multibasin scale right down to prospect scale.

This versatility means as your project moves from concept to prospect, you can continue to work without

switching applications.

Scalability and enhanced performanceAdditional exploration scalability has been enabled by the compute power of a 64-bit system—coupled with

a highly scalable seismic architecture. Spatial awareness in Petrel software enables you to group data

from various coordinate reference systems—a necessity for handling your regional exploration datasets.

In Petrel 2010, parallel processing improves performance and has the capability to handle these exploration-

size datasets.

What’s New in Petrel 2010

Petroleum systems modeling

Petrel 2010 enables direct integration

of petroleum systems modeling within

exploration workflows. The Petroleum

System Quick Look plug-in lets geosci-

entists analyze all known hydrocarbon

accumulations and model charge in

new structures to more accurately

rank prospects. By combining with

PetroMod* 3D analyses, you can

estimate the geochemistry of these

possible accumulations taking into

account all the complexities of historic

reservoir processes.

Fault-seal analysis

Fault-seal analysis is a critical step

in both prospect and field appraisal

and in the identification and mapping

of critical high-flow zones or seal-

continuity areas. Correctly modeling

faults can be critical in achieving

a history match. The fault-seal tools

developed by Rock Deformation

Research enable fault-seal analysis

to be achieved faster, more simply, and

with greater accuracy and repeatability.

Additionally, the new module delivers front-line fault juxtaposition and

property-mapping tools in both exploration and production environments

and provides users with the ability to integrate with core data to allow

calibration and reduce uncertainty. The Structural and Fault Analysisprocess enables rapid computation of numerous fault properties, including

fault-transmissibility multipliers and structural uncertainty, in the modeling

and simulation process. The process also introduces another component

to the total uncertainty workflow available in Petrel software.

Modeling-while-interpreting capability

Petrel 2010 delivers modeling-while-interpreting functionality for seismic

interpreters, enabling you to handle structural complexity with ease—in

a single application. Geophysicists can automatically create a structural

framework that has the integrity to be passed directly into the modeling

realm. This shortens both the cycle-time and learning process for those

who are new to a modeling environment. It also means that modelers

don’t have to recreate the structural framework and that the knowledgeof the interpreter is preserved in modeling workflows. Interpreters and

modelers can test uncertainty in the structure and iteratively refine

velocity and property models. Key advantages of this functionality are

more accurate volumetrics, volume-uncertainty quantification, and

multiple scenario analysis.

FIELD DEVELOPMENT

Geobodies and seismic attributes

Petrel software has revolutionized development workflows by making

modeling, which was once a specialist domain only, an accessible

tool for all geoscientists. Petrel software’s ease of use, unification, and

workflow repeatability have become a benchmark in the industry and

led the mindset change that we are experiencing today.

The ideal reservoir model is highly detailed and matches production

history. As reservoirs become increasingly complex, it is critical that

reservoir models move closer to that ideal. With this release, we have

focused on better and more accurate reservoir description.

Petrel 2010 has enhanced geobody handling to provide an accurate

reservoir description. Geobodies can be transitioned directly into

models to add details where necessary and represent the reservoir

more accurately. The release delivers enhancements to scalability

for handling larger probes, crossplot-driven picking and refinement, and classification of geobodies, as well as a new automatic extraction

algorithm. Using the power of graphic processor units, users performing

this functionality take part in a uniquely interactive process.

Petrel 2010 provides the ability to model fractured reservoirs with greate

detail for improved development planning. This representation of the

fracture networks enables users to accurately account for the contribu

tion to fluid flow from all fracture sets present in the reservoir model.

The new fault-seal analysis module enables the user in both prospect and field appraisal stagesto identify and map critical high-flow zones or seal-continuous areas.

Improvements to the data tools in Petrel software enable interpreters

to gain even more insight into the reservoir. Several new attributes have

been added that provide a deeper understanding of the data. Petrel 2010

offers a rich library of seismic attributes—more than 40 volume attributes

and more than 50 surface attributes—that enhance faults, fractures, and

lateral stratigraphic traps.

Multipoint statistics

Most geologic work begins as a concept; applications like Petrel software

enable geologists to visualize their concepts. Petrel software generates

a proper reservoir model that honors the geologist’s concept and creates

a realistic visual representation. Multipoint statistics (MPS) in Petrel 2010

represents a significant advancement in this process. MPS enables

modelers to transform concepts into geo-realistic models.

RESERVOIR ENGINEERING

 Workflows and automation

The uncertainty and optimization process provides you with the options

to create a proxy, optimize, or optimize under uncertainty. With the new

functionality and algorithms in place, Petrel software is a powerful tool

for the implementation of multiple realization workflows. Petrel 2010

provides the ability to create, submit, and analyze a large number of

simulation runs. The new workflows include sensitivity and uncertainty

analysis, optimization workflows, and proxy-model workflows. You can

use these workflows for both simulation cases and static volumetric

cases. New analysis tools for flexible crossplotting and tornado charts

are at your disposal.

Petrel 2010 provides enhanced complex-well handling capabilities with

automated design, placement, and completion optimization. You can

create sophisticated simulation wells; design complex wells, such as

fish-bone and fork wells, without manual clicking; and place wells inside

geobodies with precision and best-fit criteria. In addition, you can use

well path and lateral design parameters in sensitivity and optimization

workflows. The enhanced Completions Design module enables you to set

up completions for multiple wells—improving efficiency of field-planning

studies. Petrel 2010 includes extended support for inflow control device

and flow control valve completions, and other completion items have

been added to the catalog.

User experience

Petrel 2010 has some significant enhancements to the user experience,

including upgrades to deck management, results analysis, development

strategies, gridding, and aquifer and thermal modeling. Simulation data

deck management offers increased capacity to perform more runs when

faced with limited disk space. The Results and Case tree has enhance-

ments to performance and usability. New, automated line-plotting

capabilities dramatically reduce the effort needed to recreate plots.

You can display well-production data in the 3D window—this adds

another dimension to the co-visualization of cross-domain data, with

summary data displayed as sphere, bar, stack, or pie graphs.

New capabilities for seismic extraction include the ability to crossplot two seismicattribute volumes and use color classification tools to classify the seismofacies.

The new training image and pattern creator enables the user to generate multi- point statistics patterns directly from images or drawings.

Gridding and other enhancements

New gridding capabilities include logarithmic local grids around hydraulic fractures in wells, local

coarsened grids, and tartan grids that reduce the number of cells. For aquifer modeling, you will

find enhancements to aquifer connections, drive directions, connection filters, custom influence

functions, and temperature specification. Petrel 2010 helps you set up thermal simulations with

templates for building thermal simulation cases with associated results analysis. And you can improve

field-development strategies by leveraging compositional simulation, gas-lift optimization, thermal

simulation, and keywords for advanced users.
