With all the recent natural disasters happening around the world, it started me thinking, what if something happened here in Rochester, NY? I have 3 dogs, where would I go, what would I do? I am so completely unprepared for anything like that for myself let alone for my dogs.

Any suggestions on how to become better prepared in case something happens?

Greece, NYDear Jonathan:Here in Rochester, NY, we may not see natural disasters to the extent of some of the other areas of the world, but things can happen. My mom was telling me about the “Ice Storm of 91”. Rochester suff ered one of the most costly natural disasters in New York State’s history costing over 375 million dollars in damages. Power was out in the area for days or even weeks for some people. What would happen if tomorrow we had another incident like the ice storm of 1991, would you have enough food for your pet? How about medications your pet takes regularly? Th ings can happen in Rochester, you need to be prepared.

It is better to have things organized now, in case an emergency occurs, so you will be better prepared to care for yourself and your loved ones. I assembled a list of supplies and other infor-mation that can help you accomplish this:

First thing you should always have is a pet fi rst-aid kit. You should keep one in the house (easily accessible along with your disaster kit) and one in your vehicle. Your pet fi rst aid-kit

• Heavy-duty work gloves (to protect you from being bites,) Latex gloves

• Leash, Th in rope • Splint materi-als (tongue depressor and/or 12-inch wooden ruler)

Place the contents in a plastic storage box, tackle box or coff ee can with lid (something that is waterproof.)

Th e next thing you should assemble is an evacuation kit that is easy to carry and easily accessible (make sure everyone knows where it is) and also supplies for your pets. Th is is a list of some supplies you should keep handy whether you need to evacuate or you are stuck in your house due to a snow or ice storm:

• Pet fi rst-aid kit as described above

• 1-2 weeks worth of canned (pop-top) or dry food (be sure to replace before they expire)

• Disposable litter trays (aluminum roasting pans or the pre-packed dispos-able litter trays also work well), scoop-able litter and scoop

• Liquid dish soap and disinfectant

• Disposable garbage bags for clean-up

• Pet feeding dishes, Extra harness and leash (Note: harnesses are recommended for safety)

• Bottled water, at least a weeks worth for each person and pet (store in a cool, dry place and rotate occasionally)

• A traveling bag, crate or sturdy car-rier, ideally one for each pet. Be sure to clearly mark each carrier/cage with your name, phone number, address, pet’s name, pet’s description (distinguishing marks, spayed/neutered, age, sex, etc..) microchip ID # or tattoo #, pet insur-ance policy number (if applicable), and location where you will be staying if you are evacuated to a diff erent location.

• Flashlights and batteries

• Blankets (for scooping up a fearful pet)

• Especially for cats: Pillowcase or sack, toys

• Especially for dogs: Long leash and yard stake, toys and chew toys, a week’s worth of cage liner.

• Cash on-hand

• Store in a waterproof container the following: recent photos of your pets in case you get separated from them (in-clude some photos of yourself with your pet), copies of health/shot records, pet insurance policy information (if appli-cable), proof of ownership information (proof of purchase, adoption records, registration information), microchip ID # or tattoo #, emergency contact list with addresses and phone numbers (vet-erinarian, boarding kennels, neighbors, relatives, shelters that allow pets.

Note: Not all Red Cross shelters allow pets so fi nd out who does ahead of time, hotels/motels that allow pets within your area and also outside of your area in case there is a full evacuation of your city).

Having these emergency items already assembled and easily accessible when disaster strikes is very important. Could you imagine trying to remember every-thing listed above while you are faced with leaving your home in a moments

notice? I know my mom couldn’t do it, she has problems just fi nding her car keys and cell phone when she’s in a hurry!

Here are some other things you can do to be prepared for an emergency:

1. Place waterproof stickers on front and back windows and doors that indicate how many and what kind of animals you have in the house so that rescue personnel know how many pets they are looking for. If you have time and your family and pets are evacuated, write evacuated across your stickers so that the rescue crew knows you are out safe.

2. Talk to your veterinarian about planning for your animals in case of an emergency

3. Make sure you speak with neighbors and fi nd someone who will be willing to take care of your pets if you happen not to be at home when disaster strikes. Th ey should have a key to your house, be familiar with your pets, know where your evacuation/emergency supplies are located and know your evacuation plan. Th ey should also have a signed veteri-nary medical treatment authorization form. Off er to do the same for them.

4. Check with relatives and friends (not in your immediate area) to determine if they are willing to take your pets in the event of an emergency. Also, make a list of boarding facilities, animal shelters, and veterinary clinics that would take your pets in case of an emergency.

5. Keep a list of emergency contacts by your phone and directions to your home in case you are in a state of panic or someone else is in your house that may not be familiar with the area

I hope this information helps you be better prepared and also remember to keep this in mind if you are ever faced with an emergency situation and need to evacuate...if the situation is not safe for you, then it is NOT safe for your pet. Take them with you!!!

The goldfi sh (Carassius aura-tus auratus) was one of the earliest fi sh to be domesticat-ed, and is still, one of the most

commonly kept aquarium fi sh. A rela-tively small member of the carp family, the goldfi sh is a domesticated version of a dark-gray/olive/brown carp native to Asia (fi rst domesticated in China) that was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. Early in their domes-tication, random mutations resulted in bright, orange colored specimens. It was these attractive fi sh, hand selected for their beauty, that became the found-ing breeding stock for every goldfi sh type. Few species have had so much genetic manipulation from man, result-ing in an almost endless selection of

aqua-guruthe

goldfi sh types and colors available to todays hobbyist.

Often looked upon as “indestructible beginners” fi sh, due to their hardy, tolerant nature, Goldfi sh do have certain require-ments if they are to thrive. First, Goldfi sh are a

poor choice for a fi shbowl. They are active, inquisitive fi sh that need some

room to swim and grow normally. Most types can get a good size, and can be VERY long lived animals. Specimens in the 10-12 inch range are common, with some getting considerably larger. 40 year old Goldfi sh are not unheard of! When selecting an aquarium to house your Goldfi sh, remember that “bigger is better”. They can grow quickly when properly maintained! I like to try to fi gure on at least 10 gal-lons per Goldfi sh kept.

The Aqua Guru practices the same policy when selecting a fi lter for the Goldfi sh tank. Buy a bigger fi lter than you think is necessary! Goldfi sh have the semi-deserved reputation as being “messy” fi sh. They certainly do put

a lot of waste into the water. This is often compounded by the fi sh keeper overfeeding. It’s hard to resist such a personable, endearing fi sh begging for another morsel! Resist the temptation to let them persuade you to feed them more than a small amount, twice a day or so. I’d also fi gure on doing larger water changes to keep poisonous organic levels low. A 30% bi-weekly change is adequate most of the time.

There are numerous, high-quality Goldfi sh-specifi c foods out there, usu-ally high in vegetable matter. I prefer a sinking pellet, so that the fi sh does not gulp air during feeding, which can lead to health problems. Color enhancing diets do just that; carotenoids and other color producing pigments in the food will keep your fi sh looking it’s brightest. An occasional treat of brine shrimp or bloodworms supplements the plant-based pellets with a little protein.

In next month’s Petpalooza, I’ll be showcasing some of the gorgeous, intriguing, and even downright bizarre, morphs of these globally popular fi sh. You might be surprised at the myriad of types available! Until then, enjoy your aquariums and have a happy valentine’s day!

Just like dogs, pigs learn their name in 2 to 3 weeks and will come when called. They are friendly, loyal and affectionate. Pigs love being scratched and will roll over for a belly rub. They love to snuggle close to one another and prefer to sleep nose to nose.

They love to relax in the sun, yet don’t “sweat like a pig,” because they are actually unable to sweat. They also don’t “eat like a pig,” they prefer to eat slowly and savor their food.

Every pig raised on a factory farm is denied everything that comes natural to them. They will never breath fresh air, some will never even turn around! Imagine your life behind bars.

It is not fair for pigs, or any living creature to endure this suffering.

Did You Know?Most people think that dogs sweat by salivating, but they actually sweat through the pads of their feet.

The name Pug is believed to have derived from this dog’s resemblance to the pug monkey.

Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not color blind but can, in fact, see color. However, their color scheme is not as vivid as ours and can be likened to our vision at twilight.

You might expect that a Great Dane can eat a lot of food. In fact, they can eat up to 8 ½ pounds a day!

Cats can see a lot better than dogs. In fact, dogs fi rst distinguish objects by movement, then bright-ness, and fi nally by shape.

It’s loud and noisy, very overwhelming…so much cheering.

Hi! I’m June, and I am a Jack Russell. (back to my story)

My owner, Kathy, is dressed in green and gold. So am I. Th e loud noise of the crowd is UNBEAR-ABLE! It is slamming on my tiny eardrums. Band members are marching, going “boom-boom-boom” and “toot, toot”. Jugglers toss plastic gold coins. Participants are walking with festive dogs. Wait. I just noticed something! Every dog is walk-ing around me!

“June, the parade is going to walk into the road.”. (So that is why this is called a parade). We had been walking along the side of the road where some people were throwing candy to the children. I ran over to a piece, abandoned, and gobbled it up. Ugh, swallowed, too fast. An unpleasant jerk

fi lled my upper stomach. I felt like I was going to barf it up, along with last night’s dinner. I just kept on walking, looking like I was just fi ne. I wasn’t. We walked for what seemed like 2 hours, and 12 miles. My paws were aching. I was so thirsty, fi nally I got some water. Kathy did too, and a hotdog. We had to catch up with the group so I was running as fast as my little legs could take me. We slowed down because we saw the group. “Phew”, I thought. I had to take a deep breath after panting so hard. I felt woozy and nauseous. Pawing on Kathy’s leg, I begged to be picked up. I was so sleepy. Kathy looked down. “June”, she said in a sympathetic voice. She picked me up.

Relieved and feeling safe in Kathy’s arms, I fell asleep. Before I knew it, we were at the end of the parade. Green pieces of confetti fl uttered down like grace-ful butterfl ies. “Happy St. Patrick’s Day, June!”, Kathy exclaimed! “Happy St. Patricks Day”, I whispered softly, and drifted back to sleep.

Th e renovation of Pet$aver is almost fi nished!

I was hoping that I could say “completely” fi nished but due to a few hitches and delays, it should all be done in a few weeks. We have already added 1500 square feet of additional space which allowed us to bring in over 1000 new items.

You will notice a new entrance the next time you come in. Th e automatic double doors are much friendlier for all. We have added another register and totally rede-signed the check-out area. Th e days of long lines are hopefully over. Th e wider aisles allow easier access to all of your favorite products.

Our new professional grade aquatic system will triple the amount of fi sh that we can display and provide to you an even healthier selection. Any day now we will have two self-wash tubs installed for you to wash your best friends. We have added additional staff and have provided more training for our current staff .

Th is project used all local labor and with the help of our landlord and local lenders, didn’t require a govern-ment grant! We are invested in Greece, Rochester, Monroe County, and New York State. We are so grate-ful for your support which gives us the ability to invest in our community. Pet$aver is your community’s pet store and we are ready for a great future!
