Herpetology n. The Branch of
Zoology that deals with Reptiles andAmphibians [Greek herpeton, reptile(fromherpein,to creep).
This HerpetologicalKeeper at CairnsWildlife Dome, can recall his interestin allthatslithered, creptandcrawledfrom the tender age of five or six.Raised in rural Victoria, Phil's Motheragreed to accept his first snake intothe house... a decade later. Agedclose to sixteen, Phil presented a 6month old, juvenile slip of a boa
constrictor, measuringabout30cm in lengthand a finger'sbreadth indiameter. A cheeky grin appears as he says how those initial fragileproportions helpedseal the tentativedeal. Oh, just a tiny wee slip of asnake. Wheres the harm in that? Fast forward twelve years laterhowever and dear snake had grown to an impressive 11 and a halffeet (close to four metres in metric) and weighed in at 8KG. Thisparticular snake sadly died of an unusual injury at the age of twelve, whereas Phil cautions, the average lifespanof a captive snakecan be25years.
The way Phil tells
it, not much could have dissuaded him from owning snakes andvarious creepy crawlies. He just knew they were for him, even as a
youngster. As pets go,Phil argues snake-keeping canassist with thedevelopment of responsibility around pet and animal care. That is,there exists a wider margin for a lapse in acute maintenance. Snakeenclosures need infrequent cleaning as faecal deposits occur afterfeeding... and feeds can occur weeks, sometimes months, apart. Ofcourse, a budding herpetologist must be willing andable to replicatetheir snake's natural habitat in their enclosure which caters for theirspecific exothermic needs. Snakes derive their energy from externalsources such as heat and light. Each snake - depending on theirregion of origin - has slightly different environmental needs. Forexample, a longer, horizontal, rectangular shaped enclosure wouldbetter suit a ground dwelling snake; a high and vertical shapedenclosure would better house a slithery tree dweller. Philrecommends the adoption of the herpetologist's motto 'Know Thy
Snake' through an initial heavy and protracted investment inRESEARCH. A licence is also required (see below for more info).Teenagesnake ownersneedGuardian approval.
There is
actually no one rule that fits all for snakes... one snake is not as goodas another. There is some variation in breed needs and that is whyinitial and on-going research, knowledge development and supportare VITAL when keeping snakes and reptiles. A captive snakedepends on its owner to provide an adequate false habitat that bestmeets its specific biological needs. Generally speaking however, most snakes require a 'cooling off period' even in our tropicalsurrounds. The heat lamp is turned OFF, food intake is either greatly
reduced or ceasesand thesnakewill enter a state of semi-dormancy,or partial hibernation. This period can last for weeks up to monthsdepending on the particular type of snake. This protracted 'downtime' helps a snake to remain healthy. In some cases, longevity maybethreatenedshouldthe snakenotbe affordedsome 'coolingoff'.
The requirements to owning a pet reptile in
Queensland:-
http://www.epa.qld.gov.au
1. One recreational Wildlife Licence SEE:
2. One record book from the EnvironmentalProtection Agency.
3. Minimum age of the Licence holder:- Must be over 13 years of age. Must have a parent or guardian's approval for
children between 13 and 18 years.
4. No previous knowledge or experience required.
5. No tests or appraisals required to gain theLicence.

Love your Swish Fish? Send pictures and your stories to:[email protected]
So.... you have bought your NEW fish? Congratulations! There areseveral steps that you can take to help ensure a healthy transition toyourfishtank...
When you get home with the fish, put the plastic bag
holding the fish in your tank and let it float unopened for fifteen totwenty minutes;
Now is a good time re-arrange the
'decorations' in your tank. Moving thingsaroundwill help to break uptheterritories of fish youalready have, which will result in less fighting
as the new swishy fishies try to find their place in their new aquaticplayground;
After an initial 20 minutes of floating, the water
temperature shouldhave stabilised andyour fish hasacclimatisedtothe the new tank's temperature. You are now ready for the next step.DO NOT MIX THE WATER FROM THE STORE INTO YOUR TANK.Carefully open the bag and scoop anequal amount of water from thetankintothebag ( use a clean cup)resulting in twice asmuch water inthe bag. Let the bag float in the tank for another fifteen to twenty
minutes. You will probably need to close the hood on an edge of thebag tokeepit from spilling itscontentsinto thetank;
After the bag has been fully rested
(30 - 40minutes in total)and yourfishare reallyanxious toget out of itinto the tank, you are ready to release them. Carefully net the fish out
of the bag one at a time and place them gently into the water of youraquarium. Prevent the bag water from getting into your tank. Thisensures any nasties contained in the water stay behind in the bag &donotcometo livein yourtank withyournewfish;
Now, sitback, relax,watch
andenjoy!

It was alleged that Missy was owned by a fisherman. When in
port,Missys ownerwould leaveheraloneon hisboat fordays. She wouldbe left with nofood and limited water supply. Missy, who was just a young pup, would be abandonedand left starving. Fortunately forMissy, neighbouring boat owners took pity on herandwould give her morsels of food enabling her to survive. Eventually, Missys ownersurrendered her to the RSPCA - anact thatprobablysaved her life, by the veryman whohadneglectedherfor somanymonths.
In 2007,at approximately 1 year of age, Missys life turnedaround. She wasadopted byhercurrent ownerDina. Dina recalls, it wasMissys beautifuleyes that drew herin andithas been love at first sight ever since. Missy has turned out to be a wonderfulcompanion to Dina, rarely leaving her side, and Missy has become a great watchdog. In fact, Dina has had to put a bell on Missys collar as once too often she has crept upbehind Dina, causing her to trip over! Missy is a kind and loving girl, who hasnt a nastystreak in her body (unless you are a little white fluffy dog Missys only vice!) When buying a dog or searching for your special furry kid, (or anypet, for that matter) those of the RESCUE variety may be worthserious consideration. There are MANY potential benefits toadoptingan adultdoginto your pack:
Yes, puppies are cute, really really cute, but the work thatcomes with one is exhausting and intensive. Adult dogs areready to roll (walk / run / rideetc).
Most rescue dogs have been in a holding or foster situationso their habits are well known. Some may have their ownquirkyhabits, butwithproper training, some patience andthedevotion ofa lovingnew family, most will settle in well.
Most dogs re-bond very quickly. Dogs have strong packinstincts and most breeds re-home very quickly with greatresults.
Rescuedogsare oftenenthusiastic, and veryhappy tohaveahome... noone likes being in limbo:a Forever Homeis Best.
Dogs available for adoption through shelters and dog rescueorganisations are de-sexed, if at the appropriate age. Letsface it; we dont need more animals in our alreadyovercrowdedshelters.
Often this comes as part of the complimentary package of are-homeddog - Kindof your reward for a gooddeed.
In some cases you will save your dog from being euthanizedand give thema secondchancetohavea GREAT life.
Often re-homed dogs are toilet ready and know how to keeptheir toileting outside.
There exists pet freight and transport companies so you are
not restricted to finding a dog in your local area. Potentialownerscanview many dogs to choosefrom onlinenowadaysandrescuea pooch from interstate.
For all the breed snobs out there (thats what Katy callsherself despite the fact she cares for all creatures great andsmall) many breed specific organisations have rescueprograms which rely on public donations to survive. Hereyou can purchase a pedigree dog that needs a new home.
After all, its not just the cross breeds of the world who findhardship in life.
Here in Far North Queensland we have several animal refuges. When buying an animal from a shelter, you often support thatcause and organisation, helping them to cover their hugeexpenses. The RSPCA shelters of Queensland receivegovernment funding, however even that is extremely limited.Give an animal in need a fresh start in life and support thoseorganisations that spend hours caringfor them. PET HEALTH
RachelPopp,Cert IVVetNurs,Article
Providing regular exercise for your dog is a vital part of
responsible pet ownership. Dogs need to get exercise tocomplete their healthy mind-body life structure. Properexercise will improve joint and bone health, as well as heartand lung function. These health improvements are in additionto the obvious reduction ofobesity, which isa hugeproblem inour dog population today. Of course, it isnt just the dog thatwill benefit from regular exercise. You are also creating ahealthier lifestylefor yourselfbywalking your dog!
In Cairns, the climate plays a large role in determining whenwe exercise our pets. It is important that dogs are notexercised during the heat of the day. It is best to plan your
walks for early mornings, or late in the evening when theweather is cooler. The canine body does not have as efficientcooling systems as that of us human beings. Certain breeds, such as the Pug, Pekingese and Boxer are particularly proneto overheating, which can result in respiratory distress andultimately death! On a hot day, it is a good practice to hoseyour dog down before and after exercise to reduce thelikelihood ofheat stress.
Swimming is a very effectiveform of exercisewhich most dogsenjoy. It is important to understand though, that not all dogsinstinctively know how to swim. Bulldogs, Dachshunds andBassett Hounds are just some breeds that may need to betaught how to take that first doggy paddle! Pet specifichydrotherapy pools are great for general fitness, especiallywhen rehabilitating from injury. A 15 minute swim in ahydrotherapy pool is the equivalent toa 1 hourwalk.
A simple daily walk will do wonders for your dogs mentalstimulation. A dog that receives a sufficient amount of dailyexercise will be calmer and more relaxed. Regular exercisereduces issues such as anxiety, destructive behaviours andproblem barking. Enrichment, through the form of a
neighbourhood walk can do wonders for your poochsdemeanor. Beingexposed to a variety of smells, meeting newpeople, having the opportunity to play with other dogs andexperiencing new environments, all contribute to theformationof a happy well adjusteddog.
It is important however, that we do take precautionswhen exercising our dogs and moderation is the key.
Games such as ball throwing and retrieving can begreat fun and stimulating for your dog. However, it isimportant when playing these games that weremember to keep the throws low to the ground, avoiding the dogs need to do whopping jumps whichmay result in an awkward landing. Dogs, like theirowners can suffer from over-exertion. Duration andintensity of exercise will often be influenced by breed, age andthe fitness level ofyourdog. Itmay bea goodidea to seek veterinary advice prior to commencingyour dog on a new Doggy Boot Camp Regime, toensurethey are in tip topcondition.
Overall, fitness and exercise are an essential andenjoyable part of dog ownership. If you find it difficultto cater to your best friends needs, there are manygreat local services in the Cairns local area that maybeabletolendahand.

COMMON SYMPTOMSOFPARALYSISTICKPRESENCE:
Ticks are huge health concern for our pets in Far North Queenslandespecially during the months . This is theparalysis tick's preferred breeding time and, consequentially, the
busiest time for Vets to treat nasty Tick infestations. Tick caseshowever do occur in our tropical climate ALL year round. Whilst thebrown dog tick and bush tick can cause ill health and spread bloodborn disease, by far, the most concerning problem is the
. This grey coloured parasite often hitches a ride into ourbackyards and parks on the back of bandicoots and other smallwandering marsupials. From there it can latch on-boardourfour leggedcanine friends.NOTGOOD!
The ticks burrow into the dogs skin from where itsucks blood and expands to about the size of asmall fingernail. As it reaches full size the tickinjects a strong poison into the dogs blood. Thepoison circulates and causes a progressive
ascending paralysis syndrome involvingweakness and then paralysis of theback legs.Thiseventually spreads to the respiratory or heartmuscles. If left untreated, this can be fatal.
Hindlegweakness, wobbliness inability tostand Vomiting, retching orgagging Poorappetite ordifficultyeating Panting Lethargy Dilated pupils
It is most important that if you find these signs in your pet that youseek veterinary advice as the paralysis can be rapidlyprogressive.
Ifperforminga tick searchon your dogmakesure tosearchthe wholeof the dog including around his bottom, feet and ear. If a tick is foundremovethe whole thingfrom asclose to theskinaspossibleandput itin a plastic jar or container so it can be identified by the vet. This canbe difficult with animals with thick coats. VETS may opt to shave the
dogto check forticks.
Whilst ticks are a nasty co-habitant of our region there are manythings you can do to prevent your dogs getting sick. The bestprevention isa product called which isa spot-on ointmentapplied to the skin of the dogs neck every 14 days which gets
absorbed into the blood stream and kills ticks asthey latch on. It is but very effectiveprevention for dogs and also works well atcontrolling thepesky flea.
Other tick prevention regimesarelisted belowbutitis important to note than nothing is 100% foolproofso daily tick checks and monitoring of your dogs is
imperative. Also, ask your vet for informationregarding pet insurance as many companies willcover dogs for the cost of treating paralysis ticksyndromewhichis oftenvery expensive.
Tick collars - need to be changed monthly and the producttends to work only around the collar rather than protecting thewhole dog
Tick and flea shampoos - only last on the coat a maximum of 3dayssoneed tobeused very regularly
Permoxin rinse - must be used at least once a week at thecorrect dose andideallyin combinationwith a collar
Proban tablets - cheap but require regular tabletting and lesseffectivethan Advantix

PET QUESTIONS
Welcome to Josie our resident VetNurse who is here to answer allyour weird and wonderful petqueries.
My 4 year old Staffy, Bob,always seems to stink! We bathhim regularly and he smells okayfor a day or so, but then the smellcomes back. Should we bath him more often, or is theresomethingelse wecando?
Phil, dogs can be bathed once a week. Unless you have a
bad flea problem, or a medical problem, I would notrecommend bathing Bob more than that. Too much bathingcan strip yourdogs coat ofnaturaloils. What typeofshampoo
do you use? It is not recommended to use human shampooon dogs. It is tempting as it makes them smell wonderful, butthe PHof a dogs skinis different toours and itcancause moreproblems. If Bob remains smelly, a vet check may be in order.A skin condition suchas mites can cause our dog to smell badconstantly and a problem like this needs attending to forattention.
I have a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo named Barney. Do I
needto wormmycockatoo and ifsohow often?
Jim, all birds need to be wormed, just like our dogs andcats. This is especially true if your bird is situated where wildbirds can get to its cage. Wild birds will bring in worms viafaecal droppings and your bird could become crosscontaminated. I suggest that your bird should be wormedevery 3 months. There are several good products on themarket for worming birds. I recommend a liquid that you mixwith their drinking water. You replace their normal water dishwith the wormer mixed with water for 24 hours. Theseproductscan bepurchasedatany pet shoporVET clinic.
I have a 5 month old Ragdoll kitten called Claudia. I am
wondering, docatsneed to bebathed?
Hi Megan! It is a good idea to bath your cat. Most cats do
not like to bebathed so getting them use to it from a very earlyage isa good idea. Theycan bebathed weeklyor fortnightly. Itis really important that whenyou are purchasinga shampoo orrinse for your cat that you check the label and ensure theproduct is cat friendly. There are some washes that are not foruse with cats and can actually result in death. Please read thelabels carefully. If the reason for bathing your cat is fleas andyourcat doesnot like to bebathed, then there are fleaand tick
products available that do not require bathing. Spot ontreatments placed between the shoulder blades of the cat areusually very good at hinderingtheflea breedingcycle.
