NATIONAL DAY RALLY

Keeping Singapore Special

Singapore has always been special and for it to stay special, the people have to continue to come together, bound

by a common spirit, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his National Day Rally address to the nation on Aug 23.

"Singapore has to stay special. Because if we are just a dull little spot on the map, a smudge, we are going to count for nothing,” he said. “We have to be a shining red dot. If we are soft and flabby, we will be eaten up. We have to stand as one united people and progress together.”

This was the thrust of PM Lee’s wide-ranging address at the ITE College Central during which he reflected on Singapore’s

“exhilarating journey’’ since it gained inde-pendence in 1965. It built up the Singapore Armed Forces, turned its vulnerabilities into strengths by building up the port, airport and its workforce to be amongst the world’s best, and transformed basic living conditions into a first-world metropolis.

It was the people coming together which made the difference, said PM Lee. “We celebrated our journey from Third World to First as one united people,” he noted. This was underscored by a shared determination to be a multi-racial society, a self-reliant cul-ture and the Government keeping faith with the people all these years.

In a heartfelt address to the nation, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong described how Singapore has beaten the odds to thrive in the last 50 years and what it will take to keep it special in the years ahead.

“Mr Lee (Kuan Yew) would have been proud of what he had built, if he had seen the National Day Parade. Now we are on our own, but we are ready. Our resolve to defend ourselves is unquestioned, our spirit and confidence is robust, our unity and identity as a people has never been stronger.”

Success factors“The Government has kept its promises.

We have kept our politics honest. We are also honest when it comes to policies and choices that we have to make. We do not shy away from hard realities or sugar-coat difficult is-sues. We do right by Singaporeans.”

He acknowledged some of these realities, including the hot-button issues of immigra-tion and foreigners. While the Government has adjusted its policies and slowed down the inflow of foreign workers in response to the people’s feedback, he noted that there are no easy choices.

“Every option has a downside," he said. “If we close our doors to all the foreign workers, our economy will tank. Whichever option we choose it will involve some pain. But I believe I am doing what Singapore needs, it is my duty to judge what is in Singaporeans’ best interests.”

Looking ahead, it is important for Sin-gaporeans to be aware of what is happening regionally as it can affect us, he noted. The Government is also moving forward in edu-cation, housing and family-friendly policies to create a better quality of life for the people.

Continued partnership between PAP and people

Ultimately, what will keep Singapore going is the same community spirit and trust between its leaders and people, which had enabled its success. “After 50 years, this faith, this sense of togetherness and purpose, is stronger than before,” pointed out PM Lee.

He described how proud he was when he saw Singapore’s athletes bring glory to the nation during the recent South-east Asian Games, how people rushed forward to lift up a truck when it ran over a man, and how people came together when Mr Lee Kuan

Yew died in March this year.It is this spirit which will enable Singapore

to prevail in the coming years. “Our best days will always be ahead of us, provided we continue to have a strong team of lions and the lion-hearted, leaders and people.”

He asked his audience: “Will Singapore become an ordinary country, with ordinary problems? Or a future where Singapore stays special for our children? Because my team and I cannot do anything just by ourselves. We have to do it with you in order to do it for you, so that we can keep Singapore special for the next 50 years.”

“If you are proud of what we have achieved together, if you support what we want to do ahead and the future that we are building, please support me and my team."

HOUSING More Singaporeans will be eligible to buy

HDB flats and Executive Condominiums as the monthly income ceiling will be raised. For HDB flats, from $10,000 to $12,000. For ECs, from $12,000 to $14,000.

HDB flats will be more affordable for middle and lower-income households as the Special Housing Grant (SHG) will be doubled from the current maximum $20,000 to $40,000. The SHG household income ceiling will be raised from $6,500 to $8,500 so that 70% of Singaporean households qualify.

SENIORS Under the comprehensive Action Plan for

successful ageing, the re-employment age will be raised from 65 to 67 by 2017 so that healthy seniors can work longer.

FAMILIES Those who buy a resale flat near their par-

“We said we would build more beautiful homes that Singaporeans can afford, and we did. We said we would strengthen our safety nets, and we did. We said we would create more pathways for our children to chase rainbows, and we did. We said that we would transform our city, and we did. We did this together. We had a vision, we believed in it, and together, we realised our dreams!”

Punca Kejayaan“Pemerintah terus menepati janjinya.

NEW CANDIDATES

Chee Hong Tat41, Former senior civil servant; Married with four children aged between 15 and 4

During my interactions with residents of Bishan-Toa Payoh, I have heard good suggestions from them on how we can work together to make this our best home and a caring community. These include exercise areas for senior citizens, covered walkways, drop-off points, upgrading of community clubs and public spaces to allow residents from both HDB and private estates to enjoy the facilities and programmes. If elected, I will focus on delivering these projects within the next five years to benefit our residents.

Besides building infrastructure and hardware, it is also important to develop our heartware if we

want to make this a warm and caring community. This includes working with voluntary welfare organisations and community groups in the area, and assisting them to raise funds and mobilise volunteers to help vulnerable families in our community.

I hope Bishan-Toa Payoh residents will give me this opportunity to serve you and your family. Together with the residents, merchants and community partners, I will work very hard to make this the best home for all of us. Together, we can build a stronger Singapore, and a better future for all of us and our children.

Cheng Li Hui39, Deputy CEO of Hai Leck Holdings Limited;Single

My passion for serving the community began early when I was a young Girl Guide. I participated in many activities such as visiting old folk homes, food donation drives and environmental recycling projects. I learnt that giving without expectation of return is a joy.

This carried on into my professional life, when I started volunteering in Bukit Panjang PAP Branch in 2003. During this period, I observed first-hand the needs of the elderly and the opportunity for them to lead meaningful, dignified lives.

Today, we have better healthcare so we tend to retire in good health. By 2030, one in five Singaporeans will

be a senior citizen. I would be proud if within each community, we can take care of each other and look out for each other. It’s very possible to do so; we can actually build something very wonderful here.

Retirement is something that should be geared towards learning, towards living a very fulfilling life. And we really want our seniors to enjoy that part of their retirement because they have worked so hard.

Helping people has been such an integral part of my life for more than a decade. When I am able to help improve the lives of the people, it really motivates me and I want to do more.

Cheryl Chan Wei Ling38, Head of Secondary Industries, The Linde Group (Gas & Engineering); Single

I enjoy interacting with people and found that volunteer work provides this platform.

Volunteer work is both meaningful and fulfilling. To me, helping someone in need and knowing that he or she is eventually able to move on with their lives brings great satisfaction. If given a chance to be an MP, I feel that it will allow me to assist an even broader group of people as I can provide feedback to shape and implement some of the policies that may affect their lives. With my experience on the ground, I can understand the challenges during policy implementation and how at times, adjustments on the ground are required so as to better benefit the target group, for example, rollout of the Pioneer Generation Package.

My key takeaway from the ground experience is to always put residents first. No issue is too trivial as it matters to them and we must help to the best of our abilities. I hope more people will take the effort to look beyond themselves, speak up for the right causes and take the first step to reach out to those who need more support. With more people in the community having positive shared values and paying it forward, we can certainly achieve more together – united and as a caring nation.

Amrin Amin36, Corporate lawyer, Joseph Tan Jude Benny LLP; Single

Mine is a story of an ordinary life blessed with extraordinary people in an exceptional country. I grew up in a 3-room HDB flat. My parents worked hard to raise me. I worked hard at school and work. But even with the hard work, I would not have had all these opportunities if not for our Singapore eco-system. Singapore has given me many opportunities to learn and grow into the person I am today. Since my younger days, I have been active in community work. I served in the Students’ Council while at Dunman Secondary School and Tampines Junior College, and in the Students’ Union at NUS. I have always taken an interest to what is affecting my community and pitching in to help. There are very few places in this world where someone from an ordinary background or a minority can have so many good opportunities, as I have been given. I believe in social mobility, where everyone, regardless of income or social status, has access to good opportunities and to progress in life. That’s my story, the story of many Singaporeans. Having received so much from my family and the community, it’s time for me to pay it forward.

NEW CANDIDATES

Chong Kee Hiong49, CEO, OUE Hospitality REIT Management Pte Ltd;Married with four school-going children

In Singapore, we are given a fair chance to get an education, pursue a chosen career and therefore have confidence that we can better raise the next generation. To me, this is a very important aspect of being Singaporean.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have received help in the form of bursaries and scholarships from clan associations and private organisations. Today’s difficulties may be different but there are assistance schemes to address these needs. Some schemes may not have reached some of the intended target audience, so we must listen carefully to residents’ concerns and escalate them to the right channels so that appropriate actions are taken.

We should also bear in mind that policies are not one-size-fits-all but we must be inclusive. By paying close attention to the ground, we can ensure that help reaches

those who need it so that everyone has a fair chance of succeeding and no one is left behind.

I have enjoyed being in the hospitality industry for the past 15 years. The industry is all about people, it allows me to communicate and work with people from all walks of life. The experience of listening to staff and guests, understanding their concerns and prioritising their needs is something that I have drawn on for my grassroots work and during the meet-the-people sessions.

My past two years of grassroots work have been very fulfilling, interacting with residents and hearing their feedback, concerns and aspirations. My priorities are to ensure that the amenities in the estate meet the needs of the residents, and for the needy individuals and families to receive the appropriate assistance.

Desmond Choo Pey Ching37, Director, Youth Development Unit at NTUC;Married, father-to-be

We need to learn about the hopes, fears and dreams of our young Singaporeans, aspirations of our generation and how to equip them to take Singapore further. We must first take small but important steps to understand and express the aspirations of young Singaporeans as best as we can.

Helping young Singaporeans to fulfil their aspirations inspires me. I was once someone in pursuit of support for my interests and passion. It is now my duty to do my part and hopefully make a difference.

Our policies must be guided by values of social justice, transparency, compassion and an encouraging spirit.

In an increasingly competitive work place, young workers struggle to balance the need to make a living and find a purpose in their work. As a Nation of Opportunities, we must better equip Singaporeans with the right skills, create exciting and good job opportunities and more importantly, help them realise their full potential.

As a new father-to-be, I understand the pressures in building a family. Like many young families, I believe in shared parenting. Having to juggle career goals and family commitments is not easy and assistance is important. Areas that will help include enhanced parental leave policies and supportive workplaces that are pro-family.

Chua Eng Leong44, Senior bank officer;Married with two sons aged 14 and 9

You must embrace politics and enjoy it, for it to be truly meaningful. My approach is always to put the residents first.

The issues residents face today are sophisticated. They want to know if you can relate to them and whether you are willing to go the extra mile to help them. Most importantly, they will assess if you can deliver on your promises. They want the person to be close to them. I have been fortunate to make many new friends among the residents over the last two years.

I will continue to listen to their feedback and find solutions to make their lives more comfortable. Town cleanliness is top of my agenda, followed by estate upgrading. As we have an ageing population, I will also be looking into opening up more eldercare facilities and student care centres through the PCF (PAP Community Foundation).

I’m also inspired by the many stories about my late father, Mr Chua Sian Chin, and the good work he did. This has taught me that I must do the right thing rather than the popular thing. In short, put words into action, and action for the well-being of the people. I am up for the challenge and I will continue to serve the residents diligently, whole-heartedly and to the best of my ability.

Darryl Wilson David44, Deputy Director at the School of Design, Temasek Polytechnic; Married with two children aged 7 and 4

Being an educator has taught me to be patient and empathetic, and to appreciate that everyone is different and everyone learns and develops differently. I thus always try to see the potential in everyone and take it upon myself to help nurture and mentor that person to realise his or her potential.

This is the attitude that I have taken towards grassroots and community work as well – to empathise with those who need help, to understand their challenges and to assist them the best I can. We would need to do more to support young families with young children, especially in providing better and more student-care places for primary school students. I have two young children so I do emphathise with the challenges faced by these young families. My mother juggled a career and health issues while raising my sister and I as a single mum, so I would also like to see how we can better help and support single-parent families.

I’m a believer in what I describe as the Three Ws: All of us should do Whatever we can and Whenever we can, Wherever we can to help those who are less fortunate. No act of kindness is too small, no amount of effort is too insignificant.

Henry Kwek Hian Chuan39, Executive Director of investment, trading and management consulting company; Married

I started community work from a young age. I taught at Kaki Bukit prison school. Those were important life lessons. People sometimes run into trouble for various reasons. We need to give them the support and a little lift to help them succeed again. That experience inspired me to champion a community where individuals have the opportunities to succeed regardless of background, race, religion, beliefs or circumstances.

Over the past few years, I have been active in the grassroots at both Kebun Baru and Chong Pang. As a grassroots volunteer, I have been deeply involved in town planning and management. We helped improve the transportation system and elderly support network.

Beyond the grassroots, I am passionate about youth and civil society engagement. I have been

working closely with Ground-Up Initiative – a local NGO focused on building sustainable communities. I have been helping them to establish the Kampung Kampus – a modern, nature-inspired, community-learning campus. Singaporeans are a practical and discerning people with a deep love for our country.

I believe that we should celebrate success in all forms, whether social, economic, cultural or sports. Success moves society forward, not just for today, but also for our children tomorrow.

But we should not forget the less fortunate. I want a caring government that listens and creates opportunities for all. I believe in a compassionate society that endures.

Lee Hong Chuang45, Senior IT Manager, IBM; Married with two children aged 5 and 3

In the 1970s, Singapore was in over drive to achieve success and growth. My parents urged me to study hard and be successful. I chose Information Technology (IT) as it was one of the hottest career options in the late 1970s and early 1980s. And I have had no regrets.

IT has given me a good grounding and the capability to analyse issues in a clear manner.

I began volunteering more than 26 years ago in the local youth and sports scene. The discipline and key values from sports taught me the importance of teamwork and instilled in me a “never say no” attitude. It gave me the impetus to work with the

activists and grassroots organisations at Hougang. Their enthusiasm is infectious.

I have been in Hougang for more than a year. Almost every day and night, I would be in Hougang, doing my walks to understand what are the residents’ concerns, issues and challenges.

At the end of the day, voters have to look at who can serve them, who is able to be there to make a difference to them. So what I’m trying to do is to make my presence felt and hopefully, the residents can see my sincerity and trust that I’m not just another PAP candidate.

I’m here as a friend.

Shamsul Kamar Bin Mohamed Razali43, Former Head of Student Management, Spectra Secondary School; Married

I began my service to the community as an activist in Pasir Ris Central in 2000. I have been a member of the Kaki Bukit and Nee Soon Central Citizens’ Consultative Committees (CCC) from 2007 to 2015.

At Kaki Bukit, I was secretary of the CCC’s Development Welfare Fund and worked closely with low income families to ensure that financial support is adequately provided for residents in this income group. My years of active community service have taught me many lessons in life.

I have learnt that despite the “many helping hands approach” and comprehensive support for the under-privileged by the government and civic societies, there are still Singaporeans

who are affected by the effects of globalisation and face great challenges. I hope my contributions in community service through the grassroots organisations could help make a difference to this segment of society.

My passion and commitment in education and the community revolve around my personal beliefs of “making a difference to others’’ and “giving back what society has provided for me”. My involvement in the community is also due to the influence of my late father who was a grassroots leader.

I strongly believe in investing in the young as well as supporting the under-privileged to become active citizens and contributors to the nation.

Koh Poh Koon43, General surgeon with specialist interest in colorectal surgery; Married with two young children

Growing up, my family did not have much, but my parents always taught me to share with those who had less, and to do the best with what we had. Fortunately, growing up in Singapore, I had access to a good education and to opportunities that helped me achieve my full potential. I became a doctor about 20 years ago so that I can serve the sick and infirmed, and strive to nurture others to do the same. I also started serving the community as a grassroots volunteer about 12 years ago. Through these years and roles, I have built clearer perspectives of issues that affect Singaporeans from all walks of life.

The doctors’ Hippocratic Oath, which sets out their obligations and conduct, demands that they serve with the highest standards of honesty and integrity. I believe that the same applies in government service.

It has been often said that a measure of a nation’s greatness is how it treats its weakest members. While I enjoy doctoring and treating patients, as a Singaporean, I feel it is time to play an active role in charting the future of Singapore – to help the weakest in society, to improve our quality of life and to build a stronger nation.

Ng Chee Meng47, Retired Chief of Defence Force;Married with two daughters

I have learnt invaluable leadership skills in my years in the SAF. I have discharged my duties to the best of my abilities, without fear or favour. I have always done my utmost for the interest and welfare of our people.

I am deeply grateful for my time in the SAF which has given me lifelong friendships with the wonderful men and women whom I have served with. From them, I learnt that being a good leader comes not only from ability, but also from having the heart to serve.

I hope to continue to serve my country and fellow Singaporeans. If I am given the honour, I will serve with integrity, heart and humility. I believe that together, we can create a Singapore where our children can have a happy future and lead meaningful lives in a safe and thriving Singapore.

I believe that we must always remember our roots, and be grateful for the opportunities Singapore has given to us. I also believe that we should always give back to society so that our future genera-tions will have the chance to do even better.

Louis Ng Kok Kwang36, Chief Executive of ACRES (Animal Concerns Research & Education Society);Married with a daughter aged 1 ½

My parents brought me up with honesty, integrity and compassion as the core values of our family. These are important values that I practise and also impart to my daughter.

My last 14 years in founding and managing the charity ACRES, and seven years as a grassroots volunteer have given me valuable experience. I understand that people often think that animal welfare work is solely about helping animals. At ACRES, it is about engaging, empowering, inspiring and mobilising people. That has been key to our success. That’s what politics is about as well. I bring that experience into politics.

I have learnt a lot from the advocacy community and grassroots leaders on the importance of serving the community and helping to shape policies in Singapore.

Using the experience I have gained, I want to do even more for the community in more diverse ways and strengthen the “Kampong Spirit” in Singapore. I want to establish projects that will help break the poverty cycle in the less fortunate families, projects that will bond the community and promote volunteerism.

Ultimately, these are projects for the community, run by the community.

Victor Lye Thiam Fatt53, CEO of Shenton Insurance Pte Ltd;Married with two children aged 21 and 17

My childhood and early government career as a policymaker motivated me to help Singaporeans and contribute to making Singapore a better home. I grew up in a large family and experienced financial difficulties at an early age. I worked hard and thanks to encouraging teachers, secured a scholarship overseas and a job in the Administrative Service.

Like many others, my family benefited from the sacrifices and hard decisions of our Pioneers led by the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

For me, politics is a calling, not a job. We must be willing to sacrifice our personal goals for the greater good. We must want to do it. People’s lives and the country’s future are at stake.

I am here now because the PAP lost Aljunied. The PAP needs to connect better on the ground. So I have to “walk the talk”. Not all in

Aljunied who voted for the opposition wanted to do so. They did so because they believed the PAP needed a reminder to re-connect ground up, not just in Aljunied, but across Singapore.

Ultimately, the “Singaporean brand of politics” must be about making Singaporeans’ lives better. It is not about power, position, prestige or money. It must be about leadership, humility and sacrifice. It must be about connecting with our people, serving and building a future for our nation, for Singaporeans.

It is when few dare to tread, that it becomes meaningful. We will know where our heart is.

I know.

To Aljunied residents, we have been homeless for the last four over years. It is time to bring us home.

Rahayu Binte Mahzam35, Partner of law firm Heng, Leong & Srinivasan;Married

When I was growing up, my parents taught me that it is important to give back to the community. They encouraged and supported my volunteering activities since I was in school. I have always felt that I gained so much from such activities. I learnt about the community, the value of building relationships and I learnt to be compassionate.

In the course of my professional and volunteer work, I have interacted with many families going through financial and other difficulties. I am passionate about helping these disadvantaged families. It is important to provide strong and holistic support for them so that they can overcome their difficulties and progress in life.

I also worked with many young people and I am passionate about ensuring that the youths, especially those from low and

middle income families, are given the opportunity to achieve their aspirations and potential.

All of us have a part to play in the community. We should do our best in whatever we do and help others along the way so that we can achieve our dreams together. With a strong leadership and a community of people who are willing to work together, I believe Singapore will continue to prosper and be a comfortable home for all.

I know that entering politics is not easy. I am new and I have a lot to learn, and I have to learn quickly. But I remain guided by my purpose, which is to serve the people. I am fortunate to have a strong team in Bukit Batok East. I am committed to do my best to maintain the high standards set by the previous MP, Madam Halimah Yacob, and the Party.

K.Muralidharan Pillai47, Head, Commercial Litigation, Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP;Married with four children aged 15 to 5

Over the past 3½ years, my fellow volunteers from the PAP Paya Lebar Branch and I have helped many families of Aljunied-Paya Lebar through a number of social assistance programmes run from our Branch, with funds raised ourselves. Our mantra is “Community Assistance is Above Politics”.

I have also shared many moments of joy and sorrow with them. Through these moments, I understood what they want to see in an MP. They want an MP who is at all times honest, responsible and accountable in his dealings with them, accessible when they need help, and sincere and passionate when helping them. Their MP must be courageous

to stand for their rights and be prepared to explain the many trade-offs in government policies instead of just leading them on. Their MP must be capable, especially in the management of their estate and the running of the Town Council and its finances.

Above all, they want an MP who stands for the politics of inclusion and has the ability to bring them together as one community. They understand their future and, for that matter, Singapore's, depends on this.

With all humility, I offer myself as their choice. I am confident that I will be able to deliver on their expectations.

Sun Xueling36, Director, Investment Group, Temasek Holdings;Married with two-year-old daughter

I started volunteering in 2001 and value the experience very much. It made me a better person. I learnt that when you help others, sometimes your own problems dim in significance and you become a happier person. When your circle of care is expanded and you treat everyone as your family, your heart is filled with compassion and gratitude.

There are many young families in Pasir Ris-Punggol. Given where I am in my life, I understand the pressures that they face, trying to take care of their families and at

the same time, trying to pursue their dreams and passions. I would like to know more residents in the constituency, have the opportunity to serve them and see how we can together make Pasir Ris-Punggol an even better place for our families.

I believe Singaporeans want to do a lot of good in their lives. We want to be a good child to our parents, a good parent to our children, a good friend, a good citizen of the community…Let’s work together to see how we can achieve this so that we can lead happy and fulfilling lives.

Ong Ye Kung45, Director of Group Strategy, Keppel Corporation;Married with two children

I want a good future for our children in Singapore and I believe PAP is the best political party for me to bring that about.

Globalisation is threatening people’s sense of identity. We have to develop our unique Singaporean identity, drawing upon the cultures and characteristics of all our communities. It will be a long-term national effort for all of us.

Personally, I feel that there has to be greater respect and recognition for workers who are skilled in trade and craft, but not necessarily possessing high academic qualifications.

There are many assistance schemes to help the low income and disadvantaged to sustain and help themselves. However, when a disaster such as a catastrophic illness strikes a healthy and functioning family, the assistance schemes may not address the needs adequately. I would like to see how we can better assist such families.

My ground experience started in Aljunied in 2011. During the campaign, I have had numerous doors slammed against me during our block visits. It was a humbling experience. In politics, we must have ideals but we cannot be naïve. I have more to learn.

After we lost Aljunied, I attended a dinner with Mr Lee Kuan Yew who sat opposite me. He advised me “Don’t give up!”

Good advice!

Joan Cheng Sim Pereira48, Assistant general manager, Temasek Cares; Married with two grown up children

I believe strongly in a community where neighbours look out for one another and share in one another's joys and challenges. It will result in strong families, a strong community and a strong Singapore.

Five years ago, I met a lady in my course of work who shared her heart-warming story with me. This story will always stay with me. She is forever grateful to her group of elderly friends who saved her from the brink of suicide.

After her husband passed away, she felt so alone and cooped herself up at home. She was in a state of depression as she could not imagine life without him. When she did not turn up for her regular community activities, her group checked on her and immediately sought medical help. They visited her daily and kept her company. She has now fully recovered and is volunteering actively in the community, teaching the elderly English and organising wellness programmes for them.

As for her group of friends, they are just happy they helped a neighbour live well. This incident has made me more aware of the need for informal networks because it acts as an informal roll call, something I want to champion. This is especially important with decreasing family size and many elderly living alone.

Yee Chia Hsing44, Head of Catalist, CIMB Bank Singapore;Married with two children aged 14 and 12

Volunteer work has helped me gain a better perspective of life and be more appreciative of what I have. I have be-come a happier person and find great satisfaction in being able to help make a difference to the lives of others. Where I am not in a position to help, I make it a point to lend a listening ear and offer words of encouragement. Sometimes, the concern and empathy we show can help those in need find the strength to face their difficulties. People just need to know that they are not alone.

From my ground experience, I have learnt the importance of house visits as I got to know residents who may normally not participate in our organ-ised community activities. It has al-lowed me to connect with them and to get a good feel of the issues they face.

As an employee in the private sector, I hope to bring a different perspective to the decision-making process at the national level.

I benefited from the love of my grandparents and strongly believe that a multi-generation family that stays together plays an important role in a child's development, especially in families where both parents are working.

I draw inspiration from the motto "Together we can make a difference". As individuals, we tend to think that whatever we say or do doesn't count, but I believe we can all make a differ-ence, especially if we harness the spirit of the community.

Melvin Yong Yik Chye43, Retired senior police officer;Married with two children aged 14 and 12

As a police officer, I have had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, learn to analyse problems and work in a team to solve cases. My seniors taught us this: no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

At the community level, I have been a grassroots volunteer for more than 13 years. I learnt an important lesson in volunteering-- we have to be efficient and effective to be able to solve problems but at the same time, we must also have the heart and be able to connect with the people we serve.

I have a special interest in youth development and in 2011, started the Delta League, a local football league, which has become a nation-

wide youth engagement programme. The boys come from varied family backgrounds, and some feel that they do not matter. Besides playing football, the boys also do community work. When they see their contributions being recognised, they feel a sense of accomplishment and realise their own worth. The Delta League has reached out to more than 10,000 youths and has helped change their views on life.

Being able to make a positive difference in the lives of fellow Singaporeans has been my motivation. Together, we can build a community where we are able to look out for one another, to share the simple joys of achievement and to support each other in times of need.

I am a family man, economist and community volunteer. The key values that have guided me in life are humility, dependability, calmness, stability and fairness. I believe in family values, and its role in building a strong community.

I have had the privilege of growing up in a kampong during my early childhood and today, live in a HDB flat. I have seen how Singapore has progressed over the years and would want my young children to continue to see a brighter future here.

As someone who has benefitted from our Singapore system, I want to encourage my fellow Singaporeans to continue to strive for a better life for themselves and especially their

children. I owe much of what I have gained to our meritocratic system. I truly believe every Singaporean can benefit from it and we should all uphold it.

Having benefitted so much from society, I owe my fellow Singaporeans a debt that I can only try to repay. I want to contribute to the next chapter of Singapore’s development. There are a large number of Singaporeans who are tirelessly passionate about helping our society, without expecting any anything in return. It is this spirit of volunteerism that I want to carry on, and if given the opportunity, to serve with humility and to the best of my abilities.

Tan Wu Meng40, Consultant and specialist in medical oncology, Parkway Cancer Centre; Married with a three-year-old daughter

As a doctor, I learnt early on that life can be fragile and short. My work is a daily reminder that, in our time on this earth, we must strive to do meaningful work and make a difference to our fellow Singaporeans.

Hence, I believe that we should assist the elderly and chronic sick to lead fulfilling lives at home and in the community. If we can identify problems early, they can be sorted out well before the issues snowball. People say it takes a village to raise a child; for some of the more frail residents, it takes a small village or a small community to keep them active and in stable health.

I’ve served in various roles over the past 10 years, and it’s always a learning journey. Stepping forward is an extension of that journey of service. I believe that whatever our personal journey, life becomes more complete when we give back to our communities, uplift those in need, and build a better home for the children of tomorrow.

Even though we live in an imperfect world, I'm still an optimist. By being one people, Singapore beat the odds for 50 years and built a brighter tomorrow. I believe that so long as we pull together, Singapore can continue beating the odds.
