With top transportation specialists in control of our workhere at Peters & May, many of our customers call on us totailor solutions to meet the entire needs of all their marinecargo logistics requirements. In many circumstances ourclients are also looking to ship other marine cargo such asyacht sails, rigging and spars, engine spares, warrantyequipment, general supplies, paint and gel coats as well asother hazardous cargo including medical supplies. Wetransport much of this by air and notable recent projectshave included shipments of marine equipment forInternational Moth Class World Championships, America’sCup racing yachts including BMW Oracle, Mascalzone Latinoand TEAMORIGIN, the latter two competing in the LouisVuitton Trophy event in Auckland.

Stuart Chalcraft is one of Peters & May’s Air Freight ExportSpecialists. Stuart has many years experience and has been withPeters & May for over ten years. We caught up with him to findout more about his latest project.

“With numerous UK boat manufacturers exhibiting at forthcomingboat shows in the Far East, Australia and Brazil, I’m currentlyorganising complex shipments for eight scale models of luxurymotor yachts, in advance of being displayed at numerous shows. These models enable boat manufacturers to present current andforthcoming designs before they’re launched, so it’s reallyimportant that they arrive precisely on time for handover to themanufacturer before the start of the show. We’ve got to be

extremely fast on the ground, collectingthe fragile scale models from themanufacturers’ exhibition stands at theend of the show for export to the nextboat show, allowing a maximum of aweek from start to finish of eachtransportation.

“Each scale model is worth up to£15,000, so it’s also imperative that thisvaluable and delicate cargo is carefully transported, which in allinstances is carried by air due to the urgency of their arrival to the shows. The models are photographed, pre-packaged and stowed in flight casesbefore taken aboard.

“I coordinate the best route to meet the requirements of themanufacturers’ busy boat show calendars. When working to suchsensitive deadlines, it’s ever more important that we manage allpaperwork and customs clearance to minimise the chance of a delayincustoms. For instance, I make sure that invoices and air waybills areapproved by the office or agent at the delivery destination to ensure thatthe cargo receives a smooth passage through customs.”

Located at Peters & May’s UK Head Office, the Marine Air Freight Teamcomprises Maritza Lopez, who handles air exports alongside Stuart, and Neil Curran, who manages all marine imports by air.

We can alsoprovide our own specialist boat loaders, surveyors, cradles and lifting equipment to assist withthe loading.

The expertise and knowledge of Peters & May Loadmasters means that they are able to meetthe specific requirements of individual vessels. As the direct result of a recommendation, ourLoadmasters supervised the entire lift of a very large and particularly heavy 32m catamaran. Our Loadmasters prepared the vessel whilst also sourcing specialist equipment with a liftingcapacity of over 100 tons. They then arranged lifting equipment and ensured that timbers weresecured at specified positions underneath the vessel to protect the belts prior to the lift byfloating crane with a lift capacity of 200 tons. During the lift the Loadmasters provided guidanceto the stevedores and liaised with the Project Manager at all times.

Other significant client projects include a repeat shipment of a 15m Multicat Workboat‘Challenger of Leith’ as part of a return load from Southampton to Gibraltar. As with many of ourcontracts, the lift and loading onto the ship was under the guidance of our own Loadmasters.

Schedules were tight on departure, and the crews worked aroundthe clock to prepare the yachts for shipping out of Valencia, whilststorms that later devastated the west coast of France threatened tohamper loading and render their hard work futile. However, a smallweather window allowed operations to proceed and the yachts’masts were un-stepped before being lifted and secured onboard the containership.

The Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing (FNOB), organisers ofthe NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record, commented that thesuccess of the operation was down to team effort and also to theexcellent preparation from our offices in the UK, Spain and the USA,who worked closely throughout the entire project.

The current record stands at around nine days to Gibraltar, so theteams will also be racing their own container and cradles back toBarcelona, which are due to depart from the US on a container vesselthe day before the race starts. So it remains to be seen whether sailwill triumph over motor!

Complete Freight...one year on

Did you know that we move vessels of allshapes and sizes all around the world, fromsmall racing dinghies to large superyachts andmilitary RIBs to commercial boats?

• The smallest and the oldest boat we have evertransported was a 140 year old 14ft (4.27m) Coraclefrom the UK to New York.

• The largest motoryacht we havetransported is the200ft (61m) Mylin IVfrom the USA toHamburg.

• The largest multihullwe have handled todate was the world’slargest privatelyowned catamaran, the 145ft (44m) SY Hemisphere fromthe USA to the UK.

Jan Rydgren-Knudsen, CEO, Peters & Mayreflects on a busy year within the yachtracing sector following the acquisition inMay 2009 of Complete Freight Ltd.

“Our yacht racing logistics team has gainedhugely in the breadth and depth of yachtshipping expertise, enabling us to offercustomers even greater choice, flexibility andcompetitive prices from various carriers.

“The yacht racing market has grown substantially, with clients comingout of hibernation and the overall picture is looking promising. Costsare clearly still a major factor but this area of logistics is all aboutservice and we have been handling many significant shipments such asRAN II and Leopard of London for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and their return delivery to the Caribbean.

“The largest contract our yacht racing logistics team has been part ofover the last year was with the 2010 America’s Cup. Working closelywith the Louis Vuitton organisers, we shipped the Mascalzone yachtsand TEAMORIGIN equipment from Valencia to Nice, as well as handlingthe shipping of other teams’ equipment.

“We are confident about the year ahead and are now working with theBarcelona World Race Organisation, having shipped two of their Open60s recently and we are currently in close negotiations for a number ofother events.

“Key race logistics’ projects in 2010 include the Louis Vuitton Trophywith events in Sardinia, Dubai and Hong Kong, which we are alreadyheavily involved in. Although the Volvo Ocean Race is still more than ayear away, the teams are really stepping up activity, setting up basesand placing orders with suppliers and boat yards. We are lookingforward to managing some interesting work for these teams when theball starts rolling later in the year.

“In recent weeks it is becoming apparent that other companies areattempting to mimic the reputation of Complete Freight Ltd by aligningthemselves with a similar name – so buyers beware of cheap andinexperienced imitations.

“With many complex projects in the pipeline, the next two to three yearsare going to be particularly exciting, challenging and rewarding for ouryacht racing logistics team.”
