ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Biographical History: Peter Zack Geer was born in Colquitt in Miller County, Georgia onAugust 24, 1928, In 1951 he graduated from the Walter F. George School of Law at MercerUniversity in Macon and became an attorney. After service as a member of the GeorgiaHouse of Representatives, Geer was elected the fifth Lieutenant Governor of Georgia from1963 to 1967 under Governor Carl Sanders. Geer returned to the practice of law after 1967. In1973, Geer prosecuted four men accused in the murder of the Alday family in Donalsonville,a small farming community in Southwest Georgia.

Scope and Content: This collection consists of personal and professional papers of PeterZack Geer, Jr. Materials span 1923-1967 and include documents relating to Geer's lawpractice, his service as Executive Secretary to Governor S. Ernest Vandiver (1958-1961), andas Georgia Lt. Governor under Governor Carl Sanders (1963-1967). The subject files containinformation regarding the civil rights movement, race relations in Georgia, Julian Bond,Herman Talmadge, and Jeannette Rankin. The papers also contain the law files of his fatherPeter Zack Geer, Sr.

Note: The following folders contain materials which were all filed in large folders marked"Miscellaneous." I tried to sort the material out so specific items would be easier to find.The dates for this material are roughly 1959-1961; most of it concerns either the 1960presidential election directly, or such issues as states' rights, civil rights, integration, and

segregation, which were issues important to the election and the political battles whichfollowed.

Big Johnny Reb- This is a publication put out by WDAK radio station in Columbus. These releases aremostly transcripts of editorials used on the air by WDAK and its affiliates.

State Government News- This is a monthly publication put out by the Council of State Governments, containingnews on intergovernmental relations, legislative sessions, and state governments over thecountry.

Gilreath Press Syndicate- These are releases put out by the Gilreath Press Syndicate, which was based in Atlanta,mainly concerning Georgia state government and politicians.

1960 Election- These materials are all directly related to the 1960 Presidential election. There is a greatdeal of correspondence related to the electoral voting after the November election.

Civil Rights- These materials all relate to desegregation and other civil rights issues. They are mostlymade up of correspondence, newsletters from various interested organizations, pressreleases, and legislative bills.

Politics on Parade- These are all editions of a newspaper column, "Politics on Parade," written by SidWilliams. There are no dates on the columns, and no indication of which papers thecolumn appeared in, if any.

Note: The material in the following files were also in the "Miscellaneous" files. These dealmore with government and other issues in Georgia. The materials in the issues files (suchas "Transportation") include correspondence, newsletters from interested organizations,press releases, newspaper articles, and drafts of legislation concerning the topic.

Federal Spending Facts- This file contains various issues of Federal Spending Facts, a newsletter put out by theCouncil of State Chambers of Commerce. The newsletter provides information on thefederal budget and various issues involved with federal spending.

State Personnel- This file contains general information on state personnel, mostly from the StatePersonnel Office.

Miscellaneous- This file contains everything else which was in the "Miscellaneous" files.

Early County Condemnations- This file contains copies of court proceedings re: condemnation of land by Early Countyfor building roads, etc. in 1958-1959. Geer's uncle, Walter I. Geer, was the judge who heardthe case.

Speech File- This file contains speeches given by Geer during his time as Executive Secretary.

Photographs- This file contains miscellaneous photographs of Geer.

1962 - Lieutenant Governor Race- This file contains newspaper clippings re: the 1962 race for Lieutenant Governor, whichGeer won.

1966 - Lieutenant Governor Race- This file contains newspaper clippings re: the 1966 race for Lieutenant Governor, whichGeer lost to George W. Smith.
