UP, UP, AND AWAY!CONCEPTUAL DESIGN REVIEW
MISSION OVERVIEW• Mission Statement: Our mission is to create a small-scale version
of a Balloon Satellite-based cloud seeding system. We will test the dispersal method in order to determine its reliability and effectiveness in the extreme conditions that the Balloon satellite will go through.
WHAT WE EXPECT TO DISCOVER• Cloud seeding utilizes the properties of clouds and precipitation to
artificially influence the weather.
• Precipitation occurs from condensation
• - Cloud seeding introduces particles to condensate upon
• - Most commonly silver iodide
• Precipitation also occurs from temperature changes
• - Cloud seeding occasionally cools the air
• Often used in droughts
• - Also used agriculturally, recreationally
• Sometimes used to alleviate cloud cover
• - Beijing Olympics
WHAT WE PLAN TO DISCOVER• We will disperse 100 grams of salt 40 times during the flight using
funnels with a servo, and we plan to discover that our method will be proven effective through the GoPro footages.
• With the data that we collect, we also plan to prove that our method of cloud seeding is more efficient, which could reveal an untapped source of water.
WHY WE PROPOSE THIS EXPERIMENT• Although cloud seeding is not well known, it is well practiced
around the world such as China. Although these attempts have been at sometimes unsuccessful, with further research, we believe that cloud seeding can have a long-lasting and global impact. If cloud seeding could be done efficiently, it could alleviate droughts or benefit those areas in need of more precipitation.
