When does summer end and fall/autumn begin? September 1st or 21st/22nd? This year it felt like it changed on Labor Day, September 7

th! By the time you read this column, the chill may be out

of the air, but the season is definitely changing. Most schools have now begun and we are finalizing plans for this year’s Faith Formation program. Challenges all around in this unusual and uncertain time! There are a few other changes and comments I would like to share.

First of all, our neighbors in West Mankato are appreciating our grounds and facilities as they adjusted to the change in their habits and activities. One neighbor emailed a parishioner,

“I am not sure who to tell but, Thank you so much for all the beautiful gardens. With everything in the world that is going on, the colors, blossoms and smells have really brightened my days. There’s been a lot of planning and care that has gone into the gardens at St. Joseph’s and people notice. The people who work on these gardens had made sure there is something blooming in every season and I look forward to seeing what Fall bring. No doubt something beautiful. Thank you.”

This parishioner also noted, “Are you aware our new parking lot has become THE hot spot to go to learn to ride your bike. I know of two neighbors who walk over with their child every evening to practice riding their bikes without training wheels and both have gone to two wheels!” Perhaps you have noticed that the students from St. Mark’s School have been using our playground while they finish improvements to their equipment. There may be other ways that we can reach out and become an even better neighbor to those living nearby.

Secondly, the end of September will mark a change in taking care of the grounds at Holy Family Church and Cemetery. Al Liebl has been mowing at both locations for about twenty years, and although he is reluctant to let go, he decided to finish at the end of the month. (FYI, his wife and children have been “encouraging” him to do so for quite a while, but I guess SOME German-Americans can be a little stubborn.) Thanks, Al, for your years of service and treating our grounds as if they were your own! I’m sure Al will be watching for opportunities to help with little maintenance projects and offering his advice to Ben Moldan and the pastor. If anyone is interested in this job, please submit a proposal to me in the next week or so.

Lastly, there will be a change in location for the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, September 27

th at St. Joseph the Worker: weather permitting, we will have Mass in the

parking lot. If you’re interested in helping with the logistics, please contact the office. Perhaps it can be a way to wrap up our virtual Fall Festival (incl. an online silent auction) and help us look forward to next year!?! A Holy Family parishioner inquired why there isn’t an outdoor/parking lot Mass there and we are seeing if we can make that happen the following week, October 4

th. (Rather providential because that’s the feast

day for St. Francis of Assisi!) Again, let the office know if you can help with the planning.

SJW NO FESTIVAL FESTIVAL - The St. Joe’s Fall Festival will look a little different this year. No physical event will be taking place, but we will be having a virtual fundraiser and silent auction. We are looking for businesses to donate stand alone items or baskets for our virtual silent auction. If you or your business would like to donate something, please contact Nicole at the parish office; [email protected] or 388-3766. Thank you in advance for helping us make this a success! *We can only accept new items or services as well as ready-to-go filled baskets for donations this year. If you make a donation that does not work for our 2020 virtual festival, we will hold it until next year.

SPECIAL COLLECTION - Two natural disasters have recently affected our brothers and sisters in Christ. Hurricane Laura in Louisiana and the California wildfires have created widespread destruction. We are asking you to respond with the Catholic community across the United States to a special emergency collection. Catholic Charities USA is the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church and is already responding to urgent needs for shelter, water, and food of those affected by these two disasters. Checks should be made payable to your local parish. For more information, go to www.usccb.org or www.catholiccharitiesusa.org.

JOIN US FOR THE FIRST EVER DIGITAL NEWMAN CENTER GALA. The gala program will only be 30 minutes long and will feature:1) Student Testimonies. 2) Round table discussion from past & present Newman Center Pastors (Fr. Tim Biren, Fr. Jason Kern, Fr. Joe Fogal, and our current Pastor, Fr. Andrew Vogel) 3) Featured keynote, Curtis Martin (CEO & Founder of FOCUS). Thanks to three generous benefactors, all gifts made towards the gala will be matched dollar for dollar up to $35,000! REGISTER TODAY @ www.catholicmavs.org/gala and help us continue to spread the message of Jesus Christ on the Campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Loyola welcomed K-12 students back to campus on Tuesday, September 1, and preschool classes started the second week of September. We are still accepting students in some of our grades; if you would like more information regarding enrolling at Loyola, please call 507-388-0600.

Employment opportunities

Loyola will soon be offering bus service to some of our students outside of the District 77 bus routes. We are seeking a shuttle driver for the morning route, with the potential of adding shifts. For more information, please contact Trudi Clements, 507-388-0606.

Loyola is also hiring a Director of Development to support and sustainably strengthen our Advancement Department. The Director will help assist in our fundraising efforts, manage and train current staff, and be a key player in our future campaign efforts. If you or someone you know is qualified for this position, please contact Trudi Clements, 507-388-0606.
