A big catch!
Franc Filipic from Slovenia went fishing in the same lake every weekend. One weekend he caught something very big and powerful. It was so powerful that it pulled Franc into the water. His friend shouted, “Let it go! It’s too big!” Franc fought to pull the fish in, but the fish was stronger and it slowly pulled Franc into deeper and deeper water. Oliver, part 1
Before she goes into her classroom, Leela Rao opens her schoolbag and looks inside. There’s a cardboard box there with straw in it. A small white head looks back up at her. It’s Oliver, her pet rat and he looks happy in his warm nest. At lunchtime she wants to show Oliver to her friends in the school pet club. “What’s in the bag? Have you got some nice chapatis (dünner Fladen aus Weizen-mehl) for your lunch in there?” Leela turns around. Oh no, it’s Billy Kendrick. He’s a really nasty bully. His silly friends are with him, too. Billy pulls Leela’s schoolbag out of her hands. “Let’s see what you’ve got in here.” When Leela tries to pull her open schoolbag away from Billy, everything inside falls out onto the floor. Billy throws his schoolbag onto the floor and pushes Leela and she falls down. “Stop that! See me after the lesson, Billy. Now go inside and sit down.” It’s Mrs Czernak, the maths teacher. “Billy Kendrick is a terrible bully. Do you have a problem with him? We can talk about it.” “Thank you, Mrs Czernak, but I’m alright. I’m not frightened of Billy Kendrick.”She is, but she doesn’t think the teachers can help and she doesn’t want to make Billy angry.Leela puts all her things back into her schoolbag. She picks up the cardboard box. It’s OK and the straw is still in it – but Oliver isn’t! She looks around, but she can’t see Oliver. He isn’t in the corridor. He must be in the classroom. “Have you got everything now, Leela? Come on, let’s go inside.” Leela goes into the classroom and sits down at her desk. She looks around the classroom. Where is Oliver? She can’t see him anywhere. Leela puts her head in her hands and cries quietly. What a terrible day!

Oliver, part 2
“Aaaagh! Get it off me!” Billy Kendrick is jumping around and shouting. He looks very frightened. “A rat! A rat! It’s in my trousers! Help! Get it off me!”The front of his trousers is wet. His chair is wet and the floor under his chair is wet, too. “Eek! That stinks!” The boy in the desk next to Billy holds his nose. The girl behind Billy points to Billy’s trousers. “Look! Billy Kendrick’s trousers are wet and he smells!” Now everybody is looking at Billy and laughing. Mrs Czernak isn’t laughing. “I want everyone to sit down now and be quiet.”She walks over to Billy. “I can’t see a rat. Can anyone here see a rat?” “No, Mrs Czernak!”Mrs Czernak looks at Billy. He often disturbs her lessons and she’s angry. “I think this is just another one of your nasty tricks, Billy – and this is too much!” She takes Billy’s arm. “Now come with me to the office. You can tell the head teacher about your nasty trick and see if she thinks it’s funny.” Mrs Czernak takes Billy to the door of the classroom. She turns around and looks at the class before she goes. “Turn to page 48 in your maths book and do the exercises one and two. And I want you all to be very quiet until I come back.” “Yes, Mrs Czernak.” Everybody in the class is very quiet until they hear the door at the end of the corridor close. Then everybody starts talking and laughing. Nobody likes Billy Kendrick. Even his friends are laughing. Leela feels something on her foot and looks down. It’s Oliver! He’s safe. Now she is very happy. She looks around. Nobody is watching her. She picks Oliver up and kisses him on the head. “Thank you, Oliver.”Then she quickly puts him back into his box inside her school bag. What a wonderful day!

A super trick!Od is a very small person and he works as a clown in a travelling circus. He and the other clowns come into the arena between other acts. They do funny things and make people laugh. But Od is really a very good acrobat. At the end of their last act, all the clowns pick Od up and throw him onto a trampoline. Od jumps into the air, does a double somersault (Salto), and lands on his feet next to the trampoline. He and the other clowns bow (sich verbeugen) and run out of the arena. Then the next act comes into the arena. This is Hilda the hippo and she dances to pop music. But one day something goes wrong. Hilda the hippo comes into the arena too early and stands next to the trampoline. Od and the other clowns are still doing their act. They throw Od onto the trampoline and
he does his double somersault. But now Hilda is standing where he always lands and her mouth is open. Od lands in Hilda’s mouth. Hilda is surprised and she closes her mouth. All the people scream. Quickly, one of the clowns runs to the hippo and holds a feather under her nose. Hilda sneezes and Od flies out of her mouth and the other clowns catch him and run out of the arena. All the people clap (klatschen) and cheer. They think it’s a super trick!
Behind the arena, the clowns put Od on the ground. They’re very worried. Od stands up slowly. He’s OK. The circus man-ager is very happy that Od isn’t hurt and he’s happy because everyone thinks it’s a super trick. His only problem is: “What will we do tomorrow?”

A strange delivery
Luisa Alcock was an editor (Lektorin) with a publishing company (Verlag) in Atlanta, Georgia. While she was in a restaurant, a thief (Dieb) broke into her car and stole the radio, a camera and a book manuscript from a local author. When Luisa reported the theft (Diebstahl), the police told her that the thief would probably sell the radio and the camera and just throw the manuscript away. She wanted to call the author of the manuscript, but just then her phone rang. It was the author and he was very angry. It was about the manuscript he sent to Luisa. Somebody had thrown (hatte geworfen) it over the hedge (Hecke) into his garden. He told Luisa that he thought this was a very rude way of telling him that she didn’t like it!

The turtle and the raven
A turtle is resting in the sun near a tree. He looks up and sees a raven in the tree. The bird is building a nest. “That’s a really terrible house,” the turtle tells the raven. “Look at it. The walls are just sticks and feathers and it doesn’t have a roof.”The raven stops work and looks at his nest. “Well, yes, but it’s all my own work and I like it.” “When it rains, you’ll get wet,” the turtle tells the raven. “And it isn’t safe. In a big storm it will fall out of the tree. Look at my house. It’s got solid walls and a roof and inside my house I’m always warm and dry.”The raven flies down to the turtle and walks around the turtle’s shell. “Yes, your shell is a very good house, but there’s only room inside it for you. In my nest there’s enough room for my wife and our children. So I think that you have the better house, but I have the better home.”
