On the ‘Marc’Marcorus Garrett rushed for 118 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown at Penn last Saturday. The junior RB eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the third time this season, making him the first Lion to accomplish the feat since Ayo Oluwoloe in 2003. Heading into this week’s matchup, Garrett is ranked second in the conference, averaging 108.6 YPG.

Movin’ On UpSenior QB Sean Brackett moved into the Ivy League’s top 10 all-time in total offense with 6,526 career yards. He enters the week 189 yards behind former Harvard star and current Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. He also ranks 12th in Ivy League history with 40 passing touchdowns, just one shy of 10th and six shy of eighth place all-time.

Zach AttackJunior linebacker Zach Olinger continued his strong season with a 10 tackle (five solo) effort at Penn last Saturday. Olinger is currently second in the Ivy League with 50 tackles on the season. Front and CenterAt 3.00 sacks per game, Columbia currently ranks 10th in the FCS. Through five games, the Lions’ defensive line and linebackers have combined for more than 190 tackles, including 29.5 for a loss, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Whoa, NellieSophomore wide receiver Connor Nelligan had a breakout game against Princeton, grabbing 11 receptions for 102 yards. Both were career highs and Nelligan is currently ranked seventh in the Ivy League in receptions.

Big Willy StyleDefensive end Will Patterson had a stellar game on the line for the Lions against Princeton, posting nine tackles, with four TFLs and a sack. For his efforts, Patterson was named to the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll.

Twice a RushMarcorus Garrett’s 168-yard performance vs. Fordham was his second consecutive 100+ yard rushing game and the most rushing yards by a Lions since November 2009. It was also the first consecutive 100+yard rushing games since Ray Rangel did it in 2009.

Lou DiNovo’s BestAfter missing the season opener with an injury, Lou DiNovo led all receivers with five catches for 91 yards and a touchdown – a single-game career-high for DiNovo - against Fordham. His 91 yards was almost half of his total for all of 2011. His 60-yard touchdown reception was the longest TD reception of the year for Columbia.

In Columbia’s season-opening win over Marist, Olinger recorded 10 total tackles (six solo), a forced fumble and an interception. Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football PETE MANGURIAN

Peter K. Mangurian (pronounced Man - GUHR - ee - an), veteran NFL coach and former Ivy League head football coach, was named Columbia University’s Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football in December 2011.

Mangurian has more than 30 years of football coaching experience in the Football Championship Subdivision, Bowl Championship Subdivision and the National Football League. He has coached in five bowl games, four with Louisiana State University, including two Sugar Bowls. In the NFL, he coached in four AFC Championships and two Super Bowls. No stranger to the Ivy League, Mangurian was the head football coach at Cornell University from 1998-2000, compiling a 16-14 overall record, but bringing Cornell from last place in the Ivy League in 1998, to third in 1999 and second in 2000. Mangurian posted a 10-4 Ivy League record in 1999-2000, marking the best two-year conference record in Cornell history. “Pete Mangurian is an outstanding football coach,” Dr. M. Dianne Murphy said. “He brings tremendous experience with a plethora of impressive mentors, including Bill Arnsparger, Dan Reeves and Bill Belichick. He has worked in great organi-zations under Pat Bowlen, owner of the Denver Broncos, and Robert K. Kraft ‘63CC, owner of the New England Patriots. Pete’s experience speaks for itself.” “As soon as I stepped on campus, I was energized. What excited me the most was that every person I spoke to had the same enthusiasm, commitment and passion for the athletics program and the football program in particular,” Mangurian said. “We will need collaboration to be successful, and I felt that immediately. This is a tremendous opportunity to give this outstanding university an outstanding football program. “I must thank President Bollinger, Bill Campbell, Susan Feagin, James Valentini, Don Jackson, Ted Gregory, Kevin Ward, Ray Tellier and Dianne Murphy for this fantastic opportunity,” Mangurian concluded. Mangurian began his coaching career in 1979-80 at Southern Methodist University as an offensive line coach. He coached the offensive line at New Mexico State and Stanford before returning to his alma mater, LSU in 1984. With the Tigers, Magurian coached in two Sugar Bowls, the Liberty Bowl and the 1987 Gator Bowl. In 1988, Mangurian began a long stint in the NFL, first with head coach Dan Reeves and the Denver Broncos for five years as a tight end/half backs coach and offensive line coach. Mangurian moved with Coach Reeves to the New York Giants from 1993-96, and then to the Atlanta Falcons in 1997. After a very successful three years as the head football coach at Cornell University (1998-2000), Mangurian reunited with Reeves in Atlanta as the offensive line coach and then as the offensive coordinator in 2002-03. To round out his NFL coaching career, Mangurian spent four years with the New England Patriots coaching the tight ends (2005-2008) and two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-10). “I want to thank members of the search advisory committee, which include Associate Athletics Director Ray Tellier and football alumni Ted Gregory ‘74CC, Don Jackson ‘73CC, and Kevin Ward ‘74CC. Their perspective, advice and counsel was instrumental in conducting this search,” Dr. Murphy said. “I also want to thank University leadership for their commit-ment to our football program. The support of President Lee C. Bollinger, Chair, University Trustees William V. Campbell ‘62CC, Columbia College Interim Dean James Valentini and Special Advisor to the President Susan K. Feagin ‘74GS is greatly appreciated and critical in hiring our new head football coach.”

Game 1 • Columbia 10, Marist 9NEW YORK - With 6:30 left in the game and Columbia ahead 10-3, Marist scored on a one-yard pass play to cut the score to 10-9 and appeared ready to tie the game with the ensuing extra point.

Wells Childress came flying in to get a hand on the exra point and keep the Lions in front, 10-9. Columbia held onto its late lead, thanks in large part to the running of Marcorus Garrett, who carried the ball 30 times for 115 yards and a score.

Columbia’s defense played an outstanding all-around game, led by Zach Olinger, who made 10 tackles, two for a loss and had a sack and a critical interception in Columbia territory with three minutes left in the game.

“It takes every phase (to win), throughout the whole game,” Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Pete Mangurian said. “You have to stay in the moment. You have to work series to series, quarter to quarter. And that is what these guys did. It’s a tribute to how hard they’ve worked, and how they’ve bought into what we’ve asked them to do.”

Marist led 3-0 on a 28-yard field goal by Jason Myers late in the first quarter. Marist took that 3-0 lead into the halftime break, with Columbia’s defense holding Marist to 131 yards of total offense and producing three sacks. Marist held the Lions to 118 yards of offense, with three sacks, but Columbia’s Marcorous Garrett had 75 yards on 16 carries.

Columbia started the second half with an 11-play, 87-yard drive that ended in Garrett’s one-yard touchdown run and Luke Eddy’s extra point. Columbia quarterback Sean Brackett found Connor Nelligan three times during the drive, each for over 12 yards, to give the Lions key first downs and move the chains to red zone. Garrett continued to be the work horse for Columbia, adding three rushes for 15 yards, including the touchdown to give the Lions a 7-3 lead.

Marist started the ensuing drive on its own 22, but after a false start and great stops by Olinger, Shad Sommers and Mike Waller, Marist was forced to punt. Marist’s Myers caught a low snap and his knee hit the ground as he was trying to kick, downing himself at the Marist four yard line. Eddy hit the 22-yard field goal at 8:04 to give Columbia a 10-3 lead.

Marist drove down the field on the next possession, capitalizing on three first downs and on a 35-yard pass from Chuckie Looney to Mike Rios to the Columbia one-yard line. On first and goal from the one, Olinger hit Calvin McCoy and forced the fumble that Josh Martin recovered.

After each team had short series, Marist started a drive a their own 20. On six passes, Marist scored on a one-yard pass from Looney to Cotrone. Childress’ blocked extra point saved Columbia’s 10-9 lead with just over six minutes to play.

Columbia had a three and out series, punting to give the Marist the ball at their own 24-yard line. Looney hit Anthony Calcagni for a 37-yard gain in the first play of the drive. On fourth and 13, Loo-ney’s pass was tipped by Mike Waller and intercepted by Olinger to give Columbia the ball.

In a situation where all Columbia needed to do was get a couple of first downs, the Lions did just that. Brackett converted on a third and seven with an eight-yard rush and Garrett rushed for four on a third and three to give the Lions the win.

Overall Columbia had 17 first downs to Marist’s 16. Columbia held Marist to 21 yards rushing, while totaling 123 yards on the ground. Marist had 293 yards passing to Columbia’s 132 and 314 yards of total offense to 255 for Columbia.

Olinger led Columbia with 10 tackles (6 solo, 4 assisted), one sack, two TFL, one forced fumble and an interception. Paul Sakowski led Marist with 11 tackles (3 solo, 8 assisted). Garrett totaled the first hundred-yard game of his Columbia career with 115 yards on 30 rushes and a touchdown. Isaiah Gross had four catches for 63 yards to lead the receivers.

Game 2 • Columbia 13, Fordham 20NEW YORK - Marcorus Garrett piled up more than 100 yards rushing for the second straight game and Columbia came within a hair of tying the game in the final two minutes. Sean Brackett’s apparent 28-yard touchdown pass to Garrett in the back of the end zone was nullified after it was ruled the quarterback had passed the line of scrimmage, taking the potential game-tying score off the board.

Fordham regained possession with 1:17 left in the game and was able to come away with a 20-13 victory in Liberty Cup XII on Robert K. Kraft Field.

On a warm, cloudy Saturday afternoon, Fordham jumped out to a 14-3 lead on an 18-yard touchdown reception by running back Carlton Koonce, who also accumulated 250 yards and a score on the ground.

Columbia came back with a big play of its own, a 60-yard pass play from Sean Brackett to Louis DiNovo to bring the Lions within four, 14-10, late in the first quarter.

After a frenetic first quarter, the action subsided in the second quarter. With 34 seconds left, Luke Eddy’s 24-yard field goal got Columbia within a point at 14-13. But Fordham was able to put together a quick five-play, 50-yard drive that allowed Pat-rick Murray to boot a 42-yard field goal with time expired in the first half. It allowed Fordham to hold a 17-13 lead at halftime.

On the opening drive of the second half, Columbia moved the ball 47 yards down the field but the drive stalled at the Ford-ham 28-yard line. It set up a long field goal that just went wide.

It was the best scoring opportunity for either team until the start of the fourth quarter when Fordham got the ball at Colum-bia’s 41. Although the Lions’ defense forced a three and out, Murray connected from 51 yards to put Fordham ahead by a touchdown, 20-13.

Columbia advanced the ball deep into Fordham territory on its final two drives. With the clock under five minutes remaining, Columbia had the ball at the Fordham 14 but Fordham’s Michael Martin stripped the ball free on the next play and allowed the Rams to regain possession.

The Columbia defense forced another three and out on the next Fordham possession and allowed the Lions to take over the ball on its own 45-yard line.

Brackett found Isaiah Gross for 16 yards on a key fourth and 10 play that moved the ball into Fordham territory at the 39-yard line.

On a third and two from the 31, Brackett found DiNovo again for a critical first down. With Columbia down to its final shot, on fourth and 13 from the Fordham 28-yard line, Fordham came on a blitz and nearly had Brackett wrapped up but he was able to spin out of a potential sack. Brackett eluded another rusher and inadvertently ran past the line of scrimmage just before unleashing a perfect strike to Garrett in the back of the end zone. The Columbia fans started celebrating but the play was called back due to the illegal forward pass and Fordham regained possession to salt the game away.

Garrett rushed 30 times for 168 yards, while Koonce had 35 car-ries for 250 yards. Brackett finished with 249 yards passing and a score. Gross made six catches for 90 yards and DiNovo had five receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Game 3 • Columbia 6, Princeton 33NEW YORK - Princeton used a pair of special teams touchdowns to jump out to an early 14-0 lead en route to 33-6 win over Columbia Saturday at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. Columbia’s Connor Nelligan topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career, grabbing 11 catches for 102 yards.

Columbia won the toss and elected to defer, giving Princeton the ball to begin the game. Princeton’s Anthony Gaffney fielded the opening kick from the six-yard line and began to make his way through the Columbia coverage team. Gaffney received a block at the 35 yard-line and made his way to the left sideline, giving him a clear path to the end zone. With the point-after attempt good, Princeton held a 7-0 lead just 11 seconds in.

Neither offense was able to string together a long drive for the remainder of the opening quarter, with each team punting three times.

The Tigers’ began their fourth series with 34 seconds left in the first quarter, with Di Andre Atwater rushing for nine yards to end of the period. That run would begin a 13-play, 80-yard drive for the Tigers that culminated in a touchdown off a fake field goal. Tom Moak, the Princeton field goal holder, took a high snap and rolled left. On the run, Maok found Des Smith as he crossed the goal line for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The good PAT made it 14-0 in favor of the Tigers with 10:37 remaining until halftime.

Columbia responded on the next drive with its first points of the game. Alec Fisher gave Columbia good starting field posi-tion, returning the kick-off to the 30 yard-line. The Lions began the series with three positive-yardage plays. Marcorus Gar-rett gained seven yards on the ground and Brackett hit Nelligan for complete passes of 10 and 12 yards.

A pass interference call on the Tigers moved the Lions up to the Princeton 37 with a new set of downs. Two more comple-tions from Brackett, both screen passes, and three runs from the Columbia running back, put the Lions in a 4th and three situation. Luke Eddy came on and drilled a 26-yard attempt to close the gap to 14-3 with less than six minutes left in the first half.

Princeton took over at its own 42 following a squib kick from Eddy at the 5:44 mark. The Tigers quickly moved 28 yards up field, using a 13-yard completion from Quinn Epperly to Seth DeValve and a personal foul on Columbia, giving Princeton the ball at the Lions’ 25. The Columbia defense buckled down, holding Princeton to a field goal. Nolan Bieck would hit the 34-yard attempt for Princeton, making it 17-3 at the break.

Following punts from each side, Columbia began its second drive of the third quarter at its own 41. Brackett completed a trio of pass-es to three different receivers on the drive, moving the Lions down to the Princeton 24. The drive would stall there though, with Eddy hitting his second field goal of the game from 41 yards to get Co-lumbia within 11, 17-6.

Princeton would extend its lead back to 14 three series later, us-ing a 20-yard field goal from Bieck. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Princeton scored its third touchdown of the game on a 44-yard touchdown from Epperly to Roman Wilson, making it 27-6. The Tigers tacked on two more field goals, and went on to secure a 33-6 victory, its first of the season.

Garrett led all rushers with 61 yards on 20 carries, but Princeton as a team tallied 111 yards on the ground. Brackett finished the game 18-of-35 for 174 yards, while Connor Michelsen and Epperly finished with a combined 210 yards through the air.

Mike Waller led all players with 10 tackles, while Will Patterson had a stellar game on the line for the Lions with nine tackles, with four TFLs and a sack.

Game 5 • Columbia 20, Penn 24PHILADELPHIA - The Columbia football team was edged by Penn, 24-20, on Saturday. The Lions (1-4) held a 20-10 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Quakers (2-3) scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 50 seconds remaining in regulation.

Leading 6-3 to start the second half, Penn started a drive on their own 37 yard line and drove 63 yards on six plays to go ahead 10-6 on a touchdown. Penn quarterback Billy Ragone found Conner Scott for a 13-yard touch-down reception.

Two series later, Columbia got the ball on their own 16 yard line with 8:16 remaining in the third. Marcorus Garrett rushed for 36 yards on second and 10, breaking three tackles to bring Columbia to the Penn 48. Sean Brackett then found Hamilton Garner for a gain of 31 yards, taking Columbia down to the Penn 16. Two plays later Brack-ett found Garrett for a 15-yard touchdown, giving Columbia a 13-10 lead after Luke Eddy’s extra point.

After a three and out by Penn, Columbia took over on its own 10 and quickly drove down the field. Brackett found Connor Nelligan for a gain of 10, first-year Cameron Molina and Brackett rushed for five and 10-yard gains re-spectively, and Nick Durham caught a pass for a 14-yard gain to take Columbia to the 50.

Molina rushed again for 14 and Brackett hit Nelligan for seven, taking Columbia to the Penn 29. Eddy attempted a 47-yard field goal, but it was blocked by the Quakers’ B. Copeland. Penn took over at their own 23, but man-aged just one first down. A 34-yard punt, put Columbia on their 31 with 12:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. Brackett rushed for 16 yards, breaking two tackles for the first down. Brackett then passed to Garrett for a 25-yard gain down to the Penn 31. Garrett wasn’t finished. On first and 10 from the 31, he rushed 31 yards for the touchdown to give Columbia a 20-10 lead after the PAT.

Penn got the ball back on their own 14 and drove 86 yards in 14 plays for a touchdown to make it 20-17. Ragone found Mitchell King for a 16-yard touchdown reception. Colum-bia got a first down on their ensuing drive, but had to punt from their own 19. Penn started their drive on their own 38 and eight plays later, scored on a pass from Ragone to Lyle Marsh with less than a minute remaining to make it 24-20.

Columbia did have a chance in the closing moments, driving deep into Penn territory. On a fourth down play, Sean Brack-ett hit Connor Nelligan for a completion, but Nelligan was tackled at the two-yard line and time expired for the Lions.

Marcorus Garrett rushed for 118 yards with a touchdown on 19 attempts. It was his third 100+yard rushing performance of the season.
