We Can Still Double Your Money till May 31! Can We Raise $10,000 More in Just 30 Days! What happens in Las Vegas when you win? Well, they dare you to do it again! Our anonymous donor was so excited that we were able to meet our $20,000 matching grant that we have now been double–dog-dared to do it again. Our donor is offering to match another $10,000 if we can raise it by May 31. From now until May 31, if you give $10 we will receive $20. Give $200 and we receive $400! Every day we work with the unluckiest animals on the face of the planet. They are the ones who are lost, starved, sick, and lonely. Beautiful cats, dogs, horses and others that have drawn the wrong card in life through no fault of their own. Now you can change their luck, with a sure thing! Please check your piggy bank and see if there is just a little left to help us meet this double-dog-dare. Every kid knows that losing a double-dog-dare is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Our donor is ready to double up, and the animals are already doubling up outside our door. Cats Escape Double Death Threats… Our Doubled Dollars Save Them! Abandoned in a local apartment complex without food or water, the three cats narrowly escaped death when Animal Services found them and carried them to the Animal Shelter. During the required holding period, all three caught a very nasty respiratory bug (the bug is everywhere in town this spring). Since they were very contagious, we had to place them in an isolated outdoor kennel. Working with our vets, our director, Mindi Qualls, prepared a special combination of antibiotics that turned the tide. Our vets are observing that fresh air, even if very cold, is much better for respiratory cases than confined locations and because under stress, cats often catch these bugs. Your doubled dollars are making it possible for us to take on more expensive treatments and save more lives. Double Donations, Now a Doubled Dog & Doubled Litters! Jackson the Jack Russell is so fast we are sometimes sure there must be two of him. In fact, there were two Jack Russells at the pound. We found a home for Jack Number One so fast it made our heads spin. Now we need to find Jack Number Two a home. You won’t need double vision to have two dogs! Now we have doubled litters of Dachshund and Chihuahua puppies. Jodi, “The Maneater,” was on death row with her puppies and would not let anyone near her or the kids. She arrived at our office just after Honey who came from Big Spring with her litter (see more on Honey later). Our double litters are ready for homes. Help! Pet Partners Needed! Your Donation of $10 a Month Can Turn Into $240 to Save Animals! As a pet lover, you probably have the same problem we do. You just don’t have room for any more animals, and your bank account is never as big as it needs to be. Our Pet Partner program is a great way that pet lovers can help us save animals every day with a small monthly investment. Many folks hesitate to send a small donation because they think it won’t make a difference. However, if you become a Pet Partner before May 31, 2011, our anonymous donor will match everything you give as a Pet Partner for the first year. Look at how your money can grow. $10 a month equals $120 a year and is then doubled to $240. $20 a month equals $240 a year and is then doubled to $480. $50 a month equals $600 a year and is then doubled to $1,200! This is the best time ever to become a Pet Partner. You will help us reach our goal of $10,000 in donations by May 31 for our matching grant, and you will get a tremendous return on your investment. Since we have over 130 cats and dogs living at our place every day, our Pet Partner donations provide critical funding that we know we can count on. Other donations usually vary from month to month, but our Pet Partners provide for our animals every day of the year. Even cats and dogs like to know where their next meal is coming from! We can arrange your Pet Partner donation on a bank draft or a credit card. Please note, the credit card folks charge us a fee each month and the banks do not. If you do a bank draft, we receive 3% to 5% more money. To sign up, just fill out the slip inside this mailing. “I just wanted to share a couple pictures with you of Hooch (who we renamed Riley) on his first day with us. Shackelford County: Pigs? We received a Saturday

morning call about starving pigs in Shackelford County. Deputy Randy Coleman rushed to the location and

found 6 pigs that had starved to death in their pens. They died with their snouts through the fence trying to reach green grass inches away. Hubert survived and is hiding out in foster care. Two people were arrested on 7 counts each of cruelty to animals!

Fisher County: Horse Seizure Deputy Shane Baxter of Fisher County moved swiftly to seize 7 horses that were not being fed. We split the cost of the first ton of food for the horses with the Sheriff’s office while they were held for a court hearing. The court awarded us the horses, and Dr. Celeste Hill took them to her ranch for care. The court also ordered restitution, and we received $387.50 to pay for the feed. Three have already been adopted.

Callahan County: Ill Owner Needs Help Their owner has cancer. These super sweet puppies are now with us hoping you will drop by to take them home.

Midland: Cat Fence Me In? The Dr. Celeste Hill and the folks at the Tall City Veterinary Clinic in Midland donated their time to help Lady the cat after she was badly injured (a lot of fur was missing) when she seemed to get stuck under a fence. However, they were unable to find anyone in their area who could keep her during her recovery. Of course, she is with us. Connie the Corgi is also from Midland

Ozona? A New Planet.... It is a little out of our area, but who could say no to sweet and very tiny Andy from Ozona? He was found wandering around on a busy street all alone and needing a meal.

Big Spring: Mercy, More Puppies? First, Honey, a very pregnant Chihuahua, was down to her last day at the pound in Big Spring. When she arrived at our place, she seemed very happy and promptly blessed us with Daisy, Joey, and Dusty. The kids are ready for homes...hint. Then, Mercy, a bedraggled little girl, looked quite pregnant to the folks in Big Spring. Oh, well,

why have a maternity ward if you don’t have kids? Mercy came to Abilene, but a sonogram showed no pregnancy. She is one of the cutest dogs we have ever had.

Mange on the Range & Doggies How many months does it take to realize your dog has mange? Well, let’s see, the hair is falling out, the skin is infected and red and yet some people never take the dog to the vet. Our latest case of mange is Mardi Gras a beautiful red merle Australian Shepherd from the pound. She will be ready for a new home soon, and we hope her I.Q. won’t be quite as far above her new owner’s I.Q. as it was the last one’s. We told you about Spirit, the puppy with mange dumped in Tuscola, in March. She is

improving steadily and feels much better. We fear that most of her hair will never grow back after having untreated mange all her life! We need a super special and loving home for this wonderful dog. Do you know of such a home?

Flying Cat Meets Barbed Wire Driving down the road, the folks saw something thrown from a speeding car. It was not paper or plastic. They stopped to investigate and found Barb the cat impaled on a barbed wire fence. The accident ripped off the kitten’s entire lower lip, but there were no broken bones. Now Barb has exposed bunny teeth, and best of all a new home.

Fishing? I’m Hooked on Fishing! First, we must tell you that there is no hook on the fish-ing line in this picture. However, you can quickly see just how the young cat managed to have a fish hook embedded in his mouth. We guess that some cats are just natural born anglers. Fishook is already off to new adventures, and we hope he buys barbless hooks.

Was He Spiking the Ball? We don’t know if Chihuahuas ever play volleyball, but perhaps Bernie was spiking the ball when he broke his leg. All we know for sure is that Bernie wound up in the sick bay at Animal Services with a badly broken leg. We rushed him to Dr. Allen Bolt. Then, McMurry University Volleyball coach, Cammie Petree, dropped by the Bolts’ with one of her dogs. When she heard they had a volleyball playing Chihuahua, Bernie was off to doggie heaven with Cammie, Richard, and seven (or eight or nine) other dogs.

Abilene’s Only Horse Taxi “And, it has a big cab for hauling horses,” said the truck salesman when Pat Buckner bought her new pickup. We guess that was the sales pitch, since not everyone who finds a horse on Pine Street loads it in the cab of their truck for the ride to RTA. Pat found the mini horse plodding down one of Abilene’s busiest streets and headed for our Adoption Center. We arranged for Bucky to spend a few days in the pasture at Abilene Animal Services just in case his owner was looking for him. No owner appeared and Bucky soon joined our good friends Stephanie and Eddie Mangrum as part of their family.

Lucky Cyclone Arrives at the Right Time We simply do not have enough funding to treat every homeless animal in distress, but Cyclone landed at the Abilene Animal Shelter at just the right time. The three-month-old puppy was super shaggy cute, and we whisked him from death row to our Adoption Center. We quickly found a lady who wanted to have her very own Cyclone around the house, but then a problem arose. We noticed that Cyclone was limping. A quick exam by Dr. Allen Bolt confirmed that he needed hip surgery. A quick check of our mail box showed that enough doubled donations had arrived to pay the bill, and Cyclone was ready to spin off into his post surgery home.

You’re What? Well, Off to the Pound! Yuki is about 8 months old. Yuki has two tiny kittens. Yuki was turned in at the Abilene Animal Shelter. Now, just whose fault was all this? The cat was given a likely death sentence because the owner was too lazy to have her spayed! All is well for Yuki because we were able to

find a foster home for her family.

147 Saved in 48 Hours at PetSmart! In April, we held the largest PetSmart Adoption ever held in Texas, sending 147 animals home in just 48 hours. PetSmart provided generous support for promotion of the event which included a Pet Pajama Party, low-cost

vaccinations, and a free concert by the fabulous Zach Harmon Band. The North Shore Animal League motor home was in town for the event as part of their 2011 Tour for Life. We brought in animals from Eastland, Stamford, Coleman, the Abilene Animal Shelter (pound) and more.

We also provided mail-in rebates to put every animal at the pound on sale for the February Freeze Up Sale that saved 67 in one week and the March Madness Sale that saved 159.
