Recently someone asked me why Pet Junction is so important to me. They
said, “You put a lot of time, energy, and money into this publication and into your website. Why?” I took a moment, looked up and simply said, “The animals.”
Pet Junction is not about me, it’s not about the pet owners, it’s about how many ani-mals we can help by providing information to the owners that help them make better decisions where their pets are concerned.
Happy pets are amazing companions, they enrich our lives and provide a friendship that very few people could ever provide. But like humans, they get sad, they act out, they get sick and all too often their humans find reasons to discard them for it. Our mission with Pet Junction is take from those owners any excuses they may have for abandoning their pets. Can’t find a pet friendly apartment? Yes you can, search our vast database on our website. Your puppy pees in the house? Find training articles on our website or call a trainer you find between these pages. Your pet is sick? Find a good vet right here in Pet Junction OR go a holistic route and make some dietary changes. The point is that we work tirelessly to bring this community the information and the people who can help them.
Even for the people who aren’t either will-ing or able to hold onto their pet, we give you the resources to rehome that pet by providing FREE listings to rescues. We are HERE for the animals, we are here to
publisher’s letterkeep as many pets with their families as we possibly can. Does this work pay well? Ab-solutely not, but what it lacks in monetary value it makes up in spiritual value. We are not a non-profit, we do not purport to be profitless, and let’s be honest, even non-profits are not profitless, they just do not pay taxes on the money they bring in.
That being said, we need YOUR help. We need you to get involved! We need you to use our advertisers, advertisers only advertise when they get a response. We can’t do that, only you can do that. Tell them you saw them in this publication or on our website. Go to our website and buy a Tribute, or make a small non-tax deduct-ible contribution. If you have a business, advertise either in our hard copy or on our website. Other ways you can help is by introducing your friends and family to Pet Junction, liking our facebook page and visiting our website. Our website has so much to offer, if you haven’t been to it yet please visit it now at www.PetJunction.us. There are numerous ways you can help us, help them, but you have to get involved to do it. So get involved now, we are do-ing the heavy lifting...we just need you to participate.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and be sure to look for the next issue in March, 2016! We’ll see you soon at an event near you!
Sincerely,Shelly Allen

Nutrition is a very important part of how we can shape health in our
companion birds and keep them thriv-ing. Many of the health problems that I see in my patients are due to the effects of a suboptimal or imbalanced diet. The traditional approach of feeding a seed-based diet, perhaps supplemented by bits of additional grains and fruit, a tiny bit of vegeta-tion, and vitamins sprayed on the outside of the seed husk (or given by drops in the water) leaves many nutrients missing.
The most convenient direction to a balanced diet in most pet parrots is to base the diet around a high quality, organic formulated diet, generally called ‘pellets’. These bring a bal-anced level of nutrients to the bird’s table. Pellets that have unknown quality ingredients, artificial preserva-tives or coloring, or are stale are not the ideal choices. Nutrition is a com-plex subject and it is not only difficult
COMPONENTS OF A NUTRITIOUS BIRD DIETIs YOUR bird getting what it needs to live a long, healthy life?

“ ““ Fresh high quality vegetation (fresh or lightly cooked) can bring additional nu-trients that only fresh vegetation can. ”
to judge the merits of a homemade mixture but also to make sure the bird actually consumes all the compo-nents.
Fresh high quality vegetation (fresh or lightly cooked) can bring additional nutrients that only fresh vegetation can. Small amounts of certain fruits can be used as treats. Ideally all of these should be organic.
Many birds get in trouble because people feed them too many nutrient-poor foods as ‘treats’. Some of these foods masquerade or are marketed as apparently ‘healthy’ foods: some fruits, many nuts, and seed/carbohydrate- based treats. With these foods, portion sizes are a very important consid-eration- what is a ‘small’ treat is for us, could be a very large serving for a small bird and those large servings over time could give too many empty calories.
A bird not raised on pellets may have a difficult time learning to eat the pellets- not even recognizing them as a food item. In the wild they might have followed and mimicked their parents’ feeding. The wary instinct of a wild parrots avoiding possible toxic plants in the forest remains, leaving
parrots less willing to try unproven foods. Parrots have a minimal sense of smell and utilize more social and sight cues to learn about new foods. Since the bird doesn’t recognize the new item as edible, they can starve because they don’t realize there is food present.
To encourage any dietary transitions there are some techniques to use, as owners need to actively participate in and observe the conversion from seeds to pellets. Usually the meth-ods involve eating the pellets as a
demonstration, or mixing the pellets with moist foods so the flavors are shared. Since birds are stub-born and smart, it can take a bit of creativity and patience for the conversion to
be successful. To be cautious enlist the help of your avian veterinarian throughout this process.
Please visit our website, www.bird-exoticvet.com for more information about the type of services we provide and our resources page, www.birdex-oticvet.com/animal-care-resources/ for more enhanced and expanded nutritional and care recommendations in our Bird Care document.

Published research on the “war against cancer” has been available
for some time and the results sure look good. Dr. Thomas Seyfried, one of the leading pioneer academic researchers has been promoting cancer treatment through nutrition. He has been teaching neurogenetics and neurochemistry as it relates to cancer treatment at Yale University and Boston College for the past 25 years. The premise for this breakthrough is actually two-fold. The first is that cancer is NOT a genetic disease and secondly, cancer cells need glucose to survive...“Cancer’s Sweet Tooth,” is
A BETTER CURE FOR CANCER IN PETS COULD BE THROUGH DIET…
an article written by Patrick Quillin, PHD, RD, CNS and published back in the The April 2000 issue of Nutrition Science News which also supports this theory.
Even though many researchers have spent decades searching for genetic links to most cancers, the lack of results indicates that they are looking in the wrong place. As we’ve witnessed cancers increasing in both humans and pets, it is not because we are breeding it in; Cancer is caused by factors that change the metabolism on a cellular level. This means it is a metabolic disease and therefore curable by changing the body metabolism.
Where Pets and People Intersect 53
“ ““Cancer is caused by factors that change the metabolism on a cellular level. This means it is a metabolic disease and therefore curable by changing the body metabolism.”
We have long held this approach, seeing pet after pet improve with tumors disappearing, bodily functioning and energy increasing that lead to healthier extended lives. This has been done through diet, which with our carnivorous pets is through the elimination of carbohydrates and sugars. This is their species appropriate diet to begin with, the one nature designed. It is now referred to as a ketogenic diet.
For humans, a ketogenic diet calls for eliminating all but non-starchy vegetable carbohydrates, and replacing them with healthy fats and high-quality protein. Because carnivores would naturally consume very little in carbohydrate foods, elimination is easily accomplished.
A simple approach to this dietary therapy is to greatly restrict the body glucose. This naturally causes the cancer cells to starve to death. The same can be done in certain diets that can be classified as ketogenic as well for our pets. It seems miraculous that all we need to do to cure and prevent cancer in our dogs and cats is to feed them what they would eat in nature. The body, minus the glucose for energy, will work the way it was originally designed by converting fat into energy.
Several other advantages of the ketogenic diet are logically evident. If the body is burning fat as energy, obesity is greatly reduced. In addition, the research also shows that the ketogenic diet may be the cure for epilepsy and many other
metabolic diseases. This is easily understood when we realize that our body stores unnatural, synthetic toxins in fat cells. These toxins, which we and our
pets encounter on an ongoing everyday basis in our modern day environment, will not accumulate in the lower fat body.
Previously, generations of people and their pets ate high
fat diets consisting of meats, eggs, and dairy instead of our modern sweet diet of processed cereal, breads, donuts, cookies and other high carbohydrate recipes. Their incidence of cancer was very low by today’s standards. This is further evidence that cancer is metabolic and not genetic.
The key to curing and preventing a whole host of metabolic disease is as simple and inexpensive as feeding nature’s intended diets. We are all for quality of life. No more expensive, harmful radiation or debilitating chemotherapeutic drugs to gain a “few more months”, but rather enjoying great food and health for a longer life.

“My Pet DogJosephine Nola, School No. 76
When I was four years old I had a little dog named Benny. He was a faithful dog to our family. He used to take care of me when I was little. Mother always trusted Benny because he was never known to leave me or allow anyone to touch me.
One day when I was in the house playing with my dolls, Benny was not with me. I knew that the back door was open and I could get outdoors without being seen. So I got my dolly all dressed up because I was going to take her too. I put my coat and hat on and started off. My dolly and I got outdoors and had started down the lane to the canal when I felt something pulling on my dress. I looked around and there was Benny. Oh, how angry I was. I slapped Benny but he knew I was doing wrong. He pulled me home. When I got home mother and my grandmother were looking for me. When they saw Benny pulling me they gave a scream and rant to me and Benny. Benny wagged his tail. Mother put me to bed, but she gave Benny a big piece of meat.

Bigger isn’t always better. Every town has their “name brand” shelter – the one everybody recognizes. What people may not realize is that there are also dozens of small local rescues working just as hard if not harder to save the lives of animals. Many of these rescues are self-funded and are saving hundreds of animals a year. A large portion of rescues will take dogs on the euthanasia list from local shelters and foster them until they find a permanent home. Foster-based rescues also have the added benefit of the dog being socialized in a home versus picking up behavior issues and potentially aggression associated with long periods of time living in a kennel in a shelter.
