On each sheet is a factor that influences participation in physical activity. When your teacher says ‘GO’ you will walk to a sheet of paper and write an example of

that factor.

• Fashion: Participation in some sports is dictated by peoples needs to copy new fashions, e.g. break dancing and parkour

• Media: Adverts, Television, Magazines, Newspapers all

increase popularity in sports. Every year during Wimbledon the number of

people participating in tennis rockets.

Some sports are dependent on what facilities are available in the surrounding area.

Great Britain has fewer top athletes in the Winter Olympics due to opportunities to learn and practice from an early

age.

• Illness and health problems

These can effect participation depending on the event.

E.g. someone who suffers from asthma may not be able to take part in events that involve a lot of running although swimming may be more suited.

• Cost:

You have 1 minute to think with the person next to you of the MOST EXPENSIVE sport to play in terms of

equipment and then the CHEAPEST sport to participate in.

Opportunities to stay in Sport

Officiate: Umpiring and Officiating allows athletes to stay within sport beyond there playing years.

Volunteer: Junior teams rely on volunteer managers and trainers which allows performers who love the sport to stay involved in the game.

Leadership: Coaching badges and awards allow people to lead sessions and pass on knowledge and practices.
