According to the Jewish calendar, about three thousand three

hundred years ago, a group of slaves were liberated and

began the journey to liberation. And ever since, as we prepare

for the start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, we re-live

their story on the festival we call Pesah, the Jewish festival

of the exodus. This year, our celebration of Passover begins

with the first seder on Monday night, April 14.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks once proposed a fascinating thought experiment. Imagine, Rabbi Sacks

suggests, if we could travel back in time and meet the great Pharaoh himself, Ramses II. What

would you say? It might go something like this: “Ramses, there's good news and bad news.

The good news is that one people alive now will be still be alive in thousands of years time.

The bad news is: It won't be yours. It will be that group of slaves out there, building your great

temples, the people you call the habiru or Hebrews, the children of Israel.”

Imagine how Ramses might have reacted! Nothing could have sounded more absurd. The

Egypt of the Pharaohs was the greatest empire of the ancient world; and the Hebrews were

nothing—slave labor, powerless, not even yet a nation. Yet it was they, not the Pharaohs, who

survived, and still do to this day. How did it happen? Here is the answer that Rabbi Sacks pro-

poses:

Ancient Egypt and ancient Israel were two peoples who asked the most fateful question of all.

How, in this all too brief span of years, do we create something that will endure? How do we

acquire a share in immortality? The Egyptians gave one answer. Build great monuments of

stone—temples, pyramids—that will outlast the winds and sands of time. And they did. What

they built still stands. But only the buildings still remain; not the civilization that once gave

them life.

The Israelites gave a different answer. Instead, the Jews said you don't need to create monu-

ments. All you need to do is tell the story, generation after generation. You need to engrave

your values on the hearts of your children, and they on theirs, so that you live on in them, and

so on to the end of time. You need to build a civilization around the home, the school, and ed-

ucation as a conversation between the generations. You need to put children first. That is what

Jews did for thousands of years; and it's why we're here today.

Rabbi Sacks teaches that the secret to our resilience as a people is our ability to tell the story,

our ability to educate our children about the beauty of being Jewish. That’s why we survived

for the past 3,000 years, and it’s the only way we will survive for the next three, or next three

thousand, generations to come. Resilience is about the willingness and the desire to be learners

and teachers of our sacred tradition. May each of us take this sacred call seriously.

Hag kasher v’sameah—a sweet and healthy Passover to all.

Why Purim?

The rhythm of our year is marked by Jewish and secular hol-

idays that each have their own feel. We associate Yom Kip-

pur with solemnity, Simhat Torah with rejoicing, and Purim

with children, costumes, and fun. And while the traditions

and mitzvot of Purim are fun for kids and adults alike, the underlying messages of each of the four mitzvot

of this holiday teach us important lessons about how we can add meaning to our Jewish lives.

The four Mitzvot of Purim are Kriat haMegilah (reading Megillat Esther), Mishloach Manot (gifts to friends),

matanot L’evyonim (gifts to the poor) and Seudat Purim (a festive meal). On this one day we are asked to

personally engage in each one of these actions in a thoughtful and deliberate way.

The mitzvah of Kriat haMegillah is to read or hear the entire ten chapters of the scroll of Esther chanted. A good story works for kids and

adults, and a good story teaches us values while leaving us with a good feeling. A good story, like the book of Esther, allows us to discover

new lessons each time we encounter it because we are different people each time we read a story. Hearing the story of Esther can remind us

of the value of enduring, written words. Hearing the story of Esther helps us to focus on the idea that each Jew can have a large impact on

the fate of our people. Neither Esther, nor her uncle Mordecai, were particularly religious people. As far as we know, they were not people

of great learning or of great wealth. Mordecai and Esther were two individuals who answered the call of their people when there was trouble.

Mordecai and Esther were early activists. They used the information, gifts, and influence that they possessed to literally save our people.

This Purim what new life lesson can you discover while hearing the ancient words of the megillah? This Purim how can you use your gifts

in the service of our People?

The next commandment of Purim is to give matanot l’evyonim, gifts to the poor. Many people use this as a day to give tzedakah to a charity,

but there are some who choose to perform this mitzvah personally, by lit-

erally giving funds to a person in need in a direct way. On Purim we cel-

ebrate our survival from destruction, a survival brought about by two of

our own, and the first thing we are asked to do is to not think about our-

selves, but to think of those in need, and to act on their behalf. This mitz-

vah asks us how we can we live in this world while both celebrating our

own joy, and at the same time working to feel and allieviate the pain of

others as an expression of our gratitude. What an amazing concept: when

we are fortunate and wish to express gratitude our Tradition teaches us to

help those less fortunate.

Mishloach Manot are gifts of food that we give to our friends. This mitz-

vah is separate from helping those in need. This mitzvah is also about ex-

pressing our gratitude by sharing our joy with the ones we love and those

in our community. This is the holiday where we give gifts. A traditional

package includes at least two different food items and few pennies for the

recipient to give as tzdakah. This mitzvah reminds us to not forget those

in our community, and to shower them with gifts as another expression of

our gratitude. Everyone loves to get homemade hamantaschen and other

goodies, but I admit that the best mishloach manot that I have ever re-

ceived included a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream with a bottle of wine-

so feel free to be creative in your misloach manot!

The last command is to have a seudat mitzvah, a festive meal with others

in honor of the holiday. Often the meal includes good food, festive drink-

ing and satire. But the most important ingredients in the meal are family

and friends to enjoy the meal with. This mitzvah reminds each of us of

the value of community.

My best wishes for a meaningful and fun Purim filled with gratitude, joy,

the opportunity to help others, and time to connect with friends and loved

ones. May we continue to celebrate the vibrant survival of The Jewish

People. CONNECTIONS , p2

How many of you remember 2004? In 2004, we drove ourdaughter, Sarah, to college in Ohio, and Abbie entered tenthgrade at Abington Senior High School. We moved to a newhouse on a street that was still under construction. In 2004,we also recall these events:

• Facebook was launched as a social networking site only open to students from Harvard.

• “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won 11 Academy Awards.• The North Atlantic Treaty Organization formally admitted 7 new countries: Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia,

Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. • The Summer Olympics took place in Athens, Greece. Israeli windsurfer Gal Fridman won a gold medal, becoming the first and only, thus far, Olympic gold medalist in Israeli history.

• Two Israeli scientists, Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko, together with an American scientist Irwin Rose, received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and became the first Israeli Nobel laureates in chemistry.

• Naomi Shemer Israeli songwriter and composer of "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav," died. Other notable people who died in 2004 included: Yasir Arafat, Richard Avedon, Marlon Brando, Ray Charles, Julia Child, Alistair Cooke, Estee Lauder, Jerry Orbach, Tony Randall, RonaldReagan, Christopher Reeve and Susan Sontag.

• George W. Bush was reelected president, defeating John Kerry. • Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon announced plans to unilaterally withdraw from the Gaza Strip.

In 2004, we recall that Beth Sholom conducted a search for a new Rabbi and welcomed Rabbi Glanzberg-Krainin to our congregation. That sameyear, Rabbi Merow joined us upon the dissolution of Temple Sholom in northeast Philadelphia and Shalom Zachmy, our beloved Ritual Director, celebrated his eighth year at Beth Sholom.

Fast forward to 2014. This spring Beth Sholom will be “Celebrating Our Time Together” by honoring our Rabbis and Shalom Zachmy for their10 years of service to our congregation. There will be two events to honor our beloved religious leaders. The first event will be a Scholar-in-Residence Shabbat on February 28 and March 1, 2014 with Rabbi Naomi Levy. The Jewish Forward listed Rabbi Levy as one of the 50 most in-fluential Jewish leaders in the nation. Newsweek Magazine named Rabbi Levy in its "Top 50 Rabbis in America" list.

On Saturday evening May 17, there will be a special tribute and presentations will be made to our three religious leaders. Following these presen-tations, as well as Maariv and Havdalah, there will be an informal festive event with toasts, good food, drink and dancing.

In recognition of these milestone anniversaries, a Tribute Album will be presented to each honoree that will feature messages and photographsfrom our congregants. Each Sponsorship of $1,800 or greater will receive a full page in the Tribute Album and will be invited to a gala pre-event.

We invite every congregant to participate in the Tribute Album, as there is a wide range of contribution levels. Please keep in mind that the TributeAlbum will be our primary source of fundraising for the current year, so we are hoping that all of you who are able, will generously becomeSponsors at the $1,800 level or above. Additional information concerning the Tribute Album is in this edition of Connections or you can call theBeth Sholom office at 215-887-1342.

Each of our religious leaders brings his/her commitment to Judaism, knowl-edge, creativity and guidance to our congregation. We look forward to yourgenerous and consistent support as we honor them on this special anniver-sary.

TTWTAW

Those letters were emblazoned on the board in the first prin-

cipal’s training course I participated in when training for my

formidable role as a school leader. The professor walked

over to the board and placed a big “X” over the letters and

then explained. The letters stand for “That’s The Way

Things Always Were.” The animated professor went on to explain

to us that good educators think out of the box and are prepared to

make changes. While change is challenging, it is our job to think cre-

atively and explore new avenues for growth and learning. Traditions

are important; however, we must be ready to consider new endeavors

for enriching lives.

Beth Sholom Religious School is on the cusp of a new beginning.

Just as there is a re-birth of spring when Pesah arrives to remind us

of the birth of our people as a free nation, so our school will begin a

new journey as we merge our strength and creativity with our neigh-

boring school of Adath Jeshurun. Together, both schools will share

ideas ready to remember that it is time for a fresh start with innovative

ideas and reverence for the traditions of the past. We will bring to

the table programs that we value and cherish, such as The Shabbat

Experience, learning Torah reading skills, dedication to the Hebrew

language and sharing snacks together with friends before school in a

camp-like atmosphere while generating new programs that account

for the technological developments and family life-style changes that

demand updates in our classrooms.

No doubt, we are all wondering, “What will the new students and

teachers be like and will our families adjust to the new programs?”

Will our children be able to study and feel comfortable in different

settings for some activities? Will we have to learn new prayer

melodies and additional prayer goals? And, of course, are we ready

to make new friends and volunteer to get involved in a new Parent

Organization to support the school?

From the holiday of Purim, we learn that “things are not always what

they appear to be.” King Ahasuerus did not know that Esther was a

Jewess named Hadassah, and Haman did not know that she was the

niece of Mordecai. As we embark

on this effort, we must be prepared

to remove any masks and build new

relationships with students and ed-

ucators. From Purim, we also learn

that it is necessary to act responsi-

bly and look out for all of the varied

citizens in a local region, another important lesson to apply when

planning the current educational activities for the students of our com-

munity. We have to do what is absolutely best practice for our di-

verse population of learners.

We have reached a new and exciting stage in the educational devel-

opment of our merging religious school communities and have an op-

portunity in 2014 to initiate new curricula and fashion courses to meet

our students’ needs. Naturally, there will be bumps in the road, but

there will also be opportunities to participate in the creation of a vi-

brant and meaningful collaborative school with our friends and neigh-

bors. We will strengthen bonds that started this year at our Hanukkah

Happening and continue at our planned Independence Day celebra-

tion.

As information unfolds about the newly imagined religious school,

the Education Advisory Committee will share with you and will con-

tinue to listen to your voices and engage you in the process. “Things

will not be the way they always were.” We strive to make our edu-

cational program even better. Join us as we build together for the

Jewish leaders of tomorrow – our children.

With all best wishes,

Two Great Volunteer Projects atBeth Sholom; Your Idea Can BeNext!

The Beth Sholom Rummage Sale was such an amazing event! The

community and many of our congregants shopped and got fantastic

deals on things they didn’t know they needed. And we were honored

to perform many mitzvot. We helped the environment, and practiced

the mitzvah of Bal Tash’hit by reducing and reusing, and eight area

community groups benefited from the leftovers. We opened our doors

to many in the community who had never been to Beth Sholom –

practicing the mitzvah of Hakhnasat Orchim. Many of our guests

came back to tour the Visitor Center. We raised more than $12,000

for Beth Sholom just by cleaning out our closets and basements and

these funds will benefit our community.

So many new friendships were made and over 90 volunteers came

out to make the Rummage Sale such a success. Thanks to the vision

and organizational skills of Sara Koval. Our volunteers included

parking lot attendants, cashiers, people to set up and break down, and

everything in between. Please preserve that volunteer feeling by vol-

unteering again. This was a great effort organized by our volunteers.

We need your help not only to facilitate the everyday running of our

offices, but also to make Beth Sholom a vibrant and exciting place

filled with activities for everyone. Consider volunteering for one of

our existing groups or contact me about starting something new.

When a group of our devoted Israeli dancers heard that the previous

dance program was not going to continue, they volunteered to start

their own group. Israeli dancing, every Monday night, and is free to

the community, completely run and taught by volunteers, and gets

50 to 100+ dancers very week! Mazal tov to Talma Solar, Lynn Ox-

enberg, Marek Inbar, Steve Margolis and Sharon Polsky for their

amazing efforts!

Contact me with your ideas and how you would like to spend a little

extra time at Beth Sholom. By the way, the next Rummage Sale is

already scheduled for December 2014, but we need your help before

then. And you can come to dance here every Monday night. I can’t

wait to hear from you and see you!

The Wanting, by Michael Lavigne

A Russian-born architect, Roman Guttman, is

injured in a bus bombing, causing his life to

swerve into instability and his perceptions to

become disturbed as he embarks on a journey

into Palestinian territory. The account of Roman’s desert odyssey al-

who pushed the button. Enriched by flashbacks to the alluringly sad

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your generous and thoughtful gifts

and contributions. As you can imagine, it has been a difficult

period of time and adjustment continues. There are so many

precious memories – Beth Sholom memories – and knowing

that your thoughts and prayers are with us has been very com-

forting. Thank you again.

With much appreciation and love,

CONNECTIONS , p6

We have exciting news for the former Beth Sholom Pre-

school!!! We are about to begin a new initiative! Recent na-

tional studies have shown that nearly 100% of Jewish children

attend preschool. Of those children, only 30% attend Jewish

preschool. Following the findings of the Pew Research Center

Survey of U.S. Jews, there has been emphasis on the impor-

tance of Jewish preschool in starting young families on their

Jewish journeys. Our challenge is attracting more of these

families to Jewish Preschools and specifically to Beth

Sholom. With generous support from Stefan and Elizabeth

Brodie, we are about to begin an intense effort that is rooted

in the goal of increasing the number of young Jewish families

to the preschool and Beth Sholom.

There are several very significant aspects to this initiative.

First, we recognize the need to overcome the cost of attending

a Jewish Preschool. Even though Beth Sholom has always

stayed competitive in their pricing, it is still a considerate ex-

pense for parents. The Stefan and Elizabeth Brodie Fund

will provide funds to every Jewish child whose family is new

to Beth Sholom. This is a four-year program, with a max-

imum of $4,000 per child per year.

To signal to our community that something new and fresh is

happening at Beth Sholom, a new visual identity has been cre-

ated for the preschool, which is now called, “Early Learning

at Beth Sholom Congregation.” This will encourage all to

give us a fresh look.

A robust marketing effort has been created to publicize this

initiative to the community. All of the new materials will em-

phasize the programs and opportunities that make Early

Learning at Beth Sholom Congregation truly unique. We pro-

vide year round care for young children from six weeks

through kindergarten, with the choice of our excellent Tradi-

tional and Montessori programs. As part of this new direction

our Montessori program will become a certified member of

the American Montessori Society with fully credentialed

teachers. All programs offer the enrichment programming of

music, gymnastics and the soon to be introduced Mandarin

program. We are also proud to announce that our program re-

cently became a Star 4 Early Childhood Center through the

PA-endorsed Keystone STARS program.

This is a wonderful time to be part of Early Learning at Beth

Sholom, Preparing Our Children to Navigate the World.

In the last issue of Connections I told you of some of the recent improvements to our building and plans for improvements to theFischman Auditorium – all funded through our Capital Campaign.I also hinted at exciting changes to come. After many months of

meetings and design work, I ampleased to tell youthat we will soon bestarting the installation of an elevator to make ourhistoric Sanctuaryaccessible to all.

For the past two decades, we have approached this task time andagain only to come away with a plan that didn’t meet our needsor was technologically impossible to accomplish. Our beautifulbuilding has often been criticized for being inaccessible. Many donot know that Frank Lloyd Wright wanted to build the structurewith ramps akin to design of the Guggenheim Museum – built atthe same time as Beth Sholom Synagogue. But for the additionalsize, cost and unfamiliarity with ramps by building officials, wewere bestowed two grand staircases to the Sanctuary that forevermade accessibility an issue. Chair lifts added to the rear of thetwo Sanctuaries proved helpful, but showed their limitations overtime.

Approximately two years ago, Past President Herbert Sachs wasasked to chair an ad hoc Accessibility Committee to investigatethe accessibility issue once again. Several architectural firmswere invited to submit proposals to make the Sanctuary accessible. The committee was particularly impressed with the work ofChristopher Miller, AIA of John Milner Architects, Inc. of ChaddsFord, PA. Their design made both the Sisterhood and Main Sanctuaries accessible through the novel conversion of the turnedstaircase in the rear of the building into an elevator shaft.

The resulting plans are now at the construction drawing and permit phase. By early March, a general contractor will have beennamed for the project and with providence on our side, construction of the elevator will be completed before the High Holidays.

The Campaign for Beth Sholom represents – The Future in Action.I want you to join us in this important endeavor. Together, we arethe future of Beth Sholom. Elsewhere in this edition of Connections, you will read of an exciting and revolutionary preschool initiative that will help transform our services to young children. The scope of our campaign is changing our Congregation for thebetter on a daybyday basis. What we do together today, bothlarge and small, will leave footprints far beyond our time. To datewe have raised more than half our goal and look forward to ourfuture success as the campaign continues.

I want to encourage those of you ready to make gifts to call me toinsure the dedications you plan are appropriately addressed.Know that I am always available through the synagogue office at(215) 8871342, ext 109 or by email at Fwolfson@BethSholomCongregation.org. If you need an immediate response, when youcall the synagogue, be sure to ask for Brooke Keyser, our new Director of Marketing and Communications. As most staff at BethSholom, she wears many hats, with one of those hats being ourcampaign support person.

Best wishes for a Happy Purim and a Sweet Pesah to follow.

Page 8: PESAH SERVICE SCHEDULE - ShulCloud...followed by breakfast A first-born (whether of the mother or the fa-ther) should fast on the day before Passover, in commemoration of the deliverance

Haggadahs and Seders enter our thoughts as spring ap-

proaches; we begin preparations for our beautiful Festival

of Freedom – the Jewish holiday of Pesah. In the Haggadah

– the booklet that sets forth the order of the Passover Seder

and outlines our scriptural commandment to “tell your son”

of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt – we learn about the Egyptian oppression.

We are reminded of our people’s struggle to be free, their subsequent success in leaving the

land of bondage, their wanderings in the wilderness, and their covenant at Sinai. We learn of

their eventual approach to the Promised Land.

We are all familiar with these tales and with the men who played pivotal roles in them. Women,

too, have played significant parts in the liberation of our people. It has been suggested that the

Jews were liberated from Egypt because of the righteousness of the women. The actions of

Miriam, Shifra, Puah, and Pharaoh’s daughter might have qualified each of them as a volunteer,

defined as “one who offers herself for service of her own free will, or sees an end to be

achieved.” It was noted that Miriam continued to have a strong influence on the Jewish people

during the wandering and their journey from slavery to freedom: She led her people in song

and dance, and she provided a source of water. Today, at many Seders, a vessel called

“Miriam’s Cup” is filled with water and placed on the table as a reminder of Miriam’s well,

which proved to be a source of life for our ancestors. The cup also honors the important role

of Jewish women in our traditions and history, women whose stories have been too sparingly

told.

The women of Beth Sholom Sisterhood draw inspiration and strength from the women in our

history. We pray that at this season of our freedom, we may all know happiness and peace.

Invite your friends and family to come. Your

RSVP is required.

Sisterhood had a busy winter. In December,

our members helped out with crafts at our re-

ligious school’s Chanukah party. The children

had a wonderful time.

Unfortunately, an ice storm canceled our De-

cember 15 brunch where we were to learn

about Holocaust education. We hope to

reschedule this program, as everyone was

looking forward to it.

Sisterhood joined the Men’s Club at a brunch

to hear an expert discuss the economy and

give a financial forecast for 2014. We were

very encouraged.

Additionally, our members and their guests

munched on popcorn and snacks while

watching the enjoyable movie, Checking Out

starring Peter Falk. This was followed by a

delicious lunch. The attendees agreed it was

a wonderful way to spend a cold day - inside.

We have many exciting programs planned for

the spring. Please join us on March 8 for Sis-

terhood Shabbat, where our members will

lead the entire service, followed by our deli-

cious and tasty Kiddush Lunch and Learn.

Our guest speaker will be Ellen Tilman.

On Wednesday, April 30 at 6pm, our

speaker will be Marina Furman, a former

teenage refusnik. She will inspire you with

the story of her struggle to leave Russia and

immigrate to Israel. She will also bring to life

the trials and tribulations of so many others

who were religiously repressed inside of Rus-

sia. She will talk about her gratitude toward

those who helped her, and how it has never

wavered. Her story has been featured on

CNN. A light dinner will be served.

Our annual Donor Appreciation Dinner will

be held on Wednesday, May 21 at 6pm.

This event honors our generous donors and

members with a full-course dinner and enter-

tainment. Hilarity will ensue as we present

Mark your calendars for a Lunch and Learn on Shabbat morning, March 22 on Domes-

tic Violence. Please plan to join us as we learn from our special guest speaker. Look

for an upcoming announcement with more details.

We are very proud of our special programs & projects as well as our ongoing mitzvah

work: Cook for a Friend, Helene’s Heroes Blood & Pheresis Drives, Mitzvah Food Pantry,

the Mitzvah Garden and educational programs. But there is always more work to do!

Our newest committee, Shul Buddies, provides practical assistance, compassion and

friendship to anyone in need in our community. The focus is on common bonds between

the helpers and those who need help. Volunteers will reach out to homebound congre-

gants, new parents and people who are ill or who have had a recent loss. 15 volunteers

have already attended an orientation session and are committing as much or as little

time as their schedules permit. Volunteers’ activities include: cooking meals, running

errands, giving rides to shul, making phone calls and visiting homes. A number of

buddy relationships have already been set up. If you are interested or would like to re-

ceive assistance from Shul Buddies, speak with Rabbi Glanzberg-Krainin or Rabbi

Merow or call 215-887-1342, ext. 233 or write to: shulbuddies@bethsholomcongre-

gation.org.

We have had a number of programs since the last Connections publication:

Last October, we were happy to welcome Adele Goldberg, Executive Director of

Friends of Yad Sarah, as our Lunch and Learn speaker. Yad Sarah is the largest volunteer

organization in Israel and provides a wide range of free or nominal cost services and

medical equipment for sick, disabled and elderly people and their families. We learned

of the need to raise awareness in the U.S. of the many invaluable mitzvot these volun-

teers perform in Israel every day. With this beginning of a connection between Beth

Sholom and Yad Sarah, we will now continue our support and help people with special

needs enjoy a better quality of life.

The Old York Road Kehillah Act Against Hunger group, initiated by Beth Sholom and

in partnership with MAZON, is continuing its advocacy work. In order to raise aware-

ness about food insecurity, on January 20th we sponsored a showing at Gratz College

of the award winning documentary, “A Place at the Table.” Over 140 people came to

see this powerful and moving film. We hope that many of those who attended will join

us as we now look into the need for supplemental breakfast programs in Cheltenham

and Abington schools. Hunger and lack of nutrition is directly associated with school

success, so we are taking steps to increase the number of children participating in child

nutrition programs. Our goal is to mobilize the Jewish community to advocate for ef-

fective policies and programs that address the needs of thousands of needy families

and for children who often go to school hungry.

Our Beth Sholom Annual Kare4Kids Blanket Project, held on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Day, provided an opportunity to make blankets for babies and children who are suffer-

ing trauma or illness in their lives. All of the blankets that were made, as well as donated

toiletries, were delivered to various local shelters and social service agencies in our

area. This year, we were able to deliver about 30 blankets and 12 bags with toiletries

that were decorated by our youngest kids. Thank you to Marlene Snyder, our inspiring

congregant who founded Kare4Kids many years ago and works tirelessly to address

the needs of others. Yasher Koach to all who participated in this wonderful community

service project!

We are grateful to all of our active volunteers who are taking action and working to-

gether- b’yahad- to make a difference in both our synagogue and in our wider commu-

nity.

JTS to Hold Context Study Tour of Spain in May 2014

The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) will host a Context Study Tour

of Spain from May 15 to 26, 2014. The event is the first program to be

given abroad by JTS’s Context adult learning program. The inaugural

Context Study Tour of Spain will explore sites of singular importance

in Jewish history as well as the rich cultural heritage of Spain. The itin-

erary has been crafted to provide a deep understanding of the Spanish

Jewish community during the medieval period. Complete details can be

found at www.jtsa.edu/Spain.

The Context Study Tour of Spain will be guided by a scholar trained at

JTS. Dr. Jonathan Ray, Samuel Eig Associate Professor of Jewish Stud-

ies in the theology department at Georgetown University, received a

PhD in Jewish History from JTS. Professor Ray specializes in medieval

and early modern Jewish history, particularly the convivencia (coexis-

tence) among Christian, Muslim, and Jewish societies in Iberia and

throughout the broader Mediterranean world. A senior JTS representa-

tive, full-time study tour concierge, and licensed tour guides will ensure

an educational experience of the highest quality. Sites include Barcelona,

Córdoba, Granada, Madrid, Seville, and Toledo, among others.

JTS Presents Panel Discussion in Conjunction with Its Exhibition

The Presence of Trees: Photographs by Larry Lederman

The JTS Arts Advisory Board will hold a panel discussion called “‘The

Trees of the Forest Shall Sing’—But What Is Their Song?” in conjunc-

tion with the exhibition The Presence of Trees: Photographs by Larry

Lederman at JTS on Thursday, February 20, 2014, from 7:30 to 8:30

p.m. A reception will precede the panel at 6:30 p.m. The discussion,

whose title refers to 1 Chronicles 16:33, will explore diverse images of

trees and how trees are seen through the lenses of three disciplines—

landscape architecture, nature photography, and Torah. Admission is

free, but reservations are required. RSVP at www.jtsa.edu/trees. For ad-

ditional information, contact Joan Goodman, director of Lay Leadership

at JTS, at [email protected] or (212) 678-8861.

The images in The Presence of Trees: Photographs by Larry Lederman,

on view at JTS until May 22, capture the monumentality and exquisite

detail of each tree that Lederman photographs. Each offers a surprisingly

intimate visual experience that reflects the artist’s awe and affection for

his subject. “It was trees,” notes Lederman, “that brought me directly to

photography.”
