A Word From Your MPIt was with real sadness that I heard the news that County Councillor Dave Bilson had passed away after a long, difficult fight against cancer. Many of you will know Dave through the work that he did in Perton, representing the village at County, District and Parish Council level. I am sure his loss will be felt by many.Only a few weeks ago, I accompanied Dave, along with volunteers from Wild About Perton and the Perton Brownies and Guides, to plant bulbs around the Wildlife Pond.He seemed so very well and very active. It is often forgotten that without Dave’s Assistance of £1000, donated from the County Council members’ fund, this project could not have happened. But, the recent scheme will possibly, in some small way, act as tribute to a very active life, dedicated to serving the community, whether as a police officer or a councillor.Dave was also a driving force behind the Jubilee celebrations of 2012, which so many people got so much pleasure from, in Perton. This altruistic work is part of what makes South Staffordshire such a wonderful place to live in and what makes my role, as its representative, such a daily pleasure.Dave’s selfless dedication towards enhancing the lives of others around him is a prime example of the huge volume of work that gets done every day – often by unpaid volunteers – in our local community. 2013 marks a new beginning in more than one way. In the coming Spring, the flowers that were planted by Dave, Wild About Perton, the Brownies, the Guides and myself, will bloom and continue to exist as a reminder of Dave’s incredible enthusiasm and his generous spirit. Dave will be hugely missed and the massive space that he leaves behind acts as a testament to just how much he did within both Perton and the region of South Staffordshire, as a whole. To contact me call 01902 701479 or 0207 219 7150

PERTON GARDENING CLUB JANUARY INTHE GARDEN

Here we are at the start of another year. It may be cold and wet outside but there is still plenty to be done. Sort out your shed and throw away any rubbish that has accumulated during the past year. Clean and oil tools ready for use in Spring, it really does make a difference. Sharpen blades on mowers, secateurs and hoes and clean flower pots and seed trays. If you can, get outside cut out reverted stems on variegated shrubs so that they do not take over and also remove any dead leaves and flowers from pot plants. For a splash of brightness plant winter aconites or plant a pot of Christmas roses.Turn off water to outside taps or lag them well to prevent freezing and burst pipes. In the greenhouse pick up fallen leaves and flowers and check over wintering plants for damage and disease.Check guttering is free from leaves and make sure your heater is working.Feed fruit bushes with a general purpose fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone.Tidy the edges of your lawn and cut if necessary as long as the ground is not too wet or frozen but make sure you pick up the cuttings.

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

Have a read of my 10 tips to help your game - 1. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! - Take 5 minutes the night before to check the weather forecast, pack

the appropriate clothing, use the correct golf bag etc.2. Wear base layers - If you have too many thick tops on this will affect your ability to swing freely. Invest in some base layers which will allow you to keep warm but also not feel like the Michelin man.3. Warm Up - Getting to the course 5 minutes earlier than normal will allow you to warm up your body before heading to the first tee. 4. Nutrition - Eat a good breakfast before you play. This could include cereal, porridge, fresh fruit, beans on toast, poached or boiled egg. During the round avoid the all too tempting coffee, bottle of coke, bacon sandwich and replace this with lots of water, bready cake & dried fruit.5. Acceptance - This is a significant component in playing well during winter. You have to accept that during the round you are going to get moments which seem to be ‘bad luck’ i.e. poor bounces, mud on your golf ball, bad lies. Remember, it is called ‘luck’ because you cannot control it. 6. Positivity - On your approach to the1st tee be sure to avoid the small talk about how cold it is, how much rain there was last night and how the golf course is going to play tough.7. Embrace the challenge - Playing well over winter will be beneficial to your confidence and improvement. If you’re serious about improving your golf, embrace the challenges that winter brings.8. Play to your carry distances - Most golfers are only aware of their carry distances. Therefore, take two clubs more than normal. This will allow for all these and allow you to get up to the hole more often9. Check the ground conditions - Sometimes there are areas of frozen ground and water which you will only discover if you take a walk up to the green and near your intended line. Hitting a great shot and it bouncing 10 yards though the green will only lead to a sense of frustration.10. Shot Selection - If it is very soft get the ball up to the pin with the extra club, using a more lofted club and be more aggressive. If it is very hard, get the ball on the ground as quick as you can. Just remember spring is around the corner!! Don’t forget to follow us on facebook.com/pertongolfclub & Twitter @PertonGolfPGA.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

Happy New Year!! So..how are those new year resolutions going? Have you broken them all already? I’m pretty terrible at keeping them! Somehow we pin such great hopes on the beginning of a calendar year

as THE time to break a habit or develop a new pattern in our lives. But of course, January 1st is really just another day. Another day in the same way that every day of the year is a new day... a new opportunity... a new beginning. I find this thought so encouraging. Even if I’ve given up on my new year resolutions already, it doesn't matter. I don’t need to wait another year... tomorrow is a new day... a new beginning... and I can start again. Each new day is a gift - an opportunity - and my new year’s resolution is to try and live the best I can each and every day, and if I mess up, then to do what I need to do to sort things out, and then... to start again. I want to enjoy the gift of each new day. The Bible talks about how God’s mercies are new every morning - that means his love for us is there for us anew every morning, and that we can start again at any time, we don’t have to wait for a new year.So my new year’s resolution is to live each day as well as I can, one day at a time, aware that each day is a gift and an opportunity, and that God loves me each and every day. Rather than happy new year... let me wish you a year full of happy new days!
