Marketing and Media Relations Coordinator Job Description

Definition This is an administrative support position to the Senior Director of Communications and Media Relations, and is assigned to the Norfolk Public Schools Communications Team. An employee in this class is responsible for assisting the Senior Director of Communications and Media Relations in communicating with the school division’s shareholders. The duties include responding to media inquiries, pitching media stories, ensuring Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) compliance, generating and maintaining Web content, coordinating crisis communications, taking photographs, writing speeches and scripts, designing and writing content for publications, coordinating advertising, organizing special events, serving on committees, and representing the school division at various functions. The ideal candidate has a unique opportunity to assist with the marketing and branding efforts of the district and will be instrumental in informing internal and external stakeholders. Supervision Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Communications and Media Relations, with considerable opportunity for independent judgment and initiative in setting priorities and work routines and conducting assignments to completion. Researches and writes letters, speeches, press statements, press releases, and news articles for the Superintendent of Schools and the Office of Communications.

Responds to numerous information inquiries from the media and others, and assists in the presentation of information about Norfolk Public Schools to realtors, civic groups, and members of the news media.

District Supervisor, School Nutrition Job Description

Definition This is district wide administrative and supervisory work in implementing, organizing and monitoring school nutrition programs operations. An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating the operation of school meals programs citywide. The work involves developing programs and plans in consultation with the senior director and implementing programs independently. Positions in this class require understanding of local, state and federal school meals policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines. Employees develop and refine their own work routines and are expected to carry assignments through to completion independently. Work is reviewed in terms of quality and timely performance of program objectives in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and procedures. Supervision Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Director, School Nutrition. Supervision is exercised over School Nutrition Managers, School Nutrition Assistants, and substitutes. Assignments are received orally or in writing. Work is performed independently in accordance with established policies and procedures referring unusual problems to the Senior Director, School Nutrition. Additional guidance is provided through United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, National School Lunch Act, state office of School Nutrition Programs, local and state health departments, Norfolk Public Schools, federal and state rules, regulations, and guidelines. Distinguishing Characteristics Positions in this classification are District Supervisors in charge of supervising meal programs 13-14 schools. Each school environment is different, requiring constant and quick decision-making based on changing variables. Decisions are made concerning policy, regulations, personnel, productivity, interpersonal relationships, and safety. Decisions made can have a positive or negative impact on finances, quality of service, productivity, policies, public relations and overall operations. Essential Functions of the Class

Supervises nutrition programs and operations including conducting annual reviews to ensure compliance in the areas of nutrition standards, record keeping, free and reduced price policies, food safety and sanitation standards, and financial and human resource management.

Coordinates and supervises six federal school nutrition programs in assigned schools.

Directly supervises School Nutrition Managers and Assistants, including hiring and conducting orientation for new school nutrition employees, and conducts performance evaluations on School Nutrition Managers.

Reviews weekly and monthly accountability reports, forecast & production records from each school, and completes monthly reports for submission to the Virginia Department of Education for reimbursements, including conducting error/audit checks to ensure proper reimbursements and the elimination of over claims.

Evaluates school nutrition managers and assistants; takes proper disciplinary action when necessary; writes plans of action; recommends employees for continued employment or termination.

Initiates corrective action needed following health department inspections; ensures proper standards for sanitation are maintained.

Interprets financial reports regarding profit and loss for individual operations and makes recommendations to ensure financial soundness.

Assists principals, administrators, staff, parents, and the community in the resolution of school nutrition questions and concerns.

Acting Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Job Description

Definition This is an administrative and supervisory position focused on teaching, learning, and leadership development. The employee in this position works collaboratively with the Chief Academic Officer to coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment; develop and administer the professional development budget; and to ensure that division curricula are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. Work is reviewed in terms of capacity building, curriculum development, and approved teaching, learning, and leadership development for administrators and teachers. Supervision Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Academic Officer. Work is reviewed in terms of efficiency and effectiveness of operations, quality and timeliness of reports, and compatibility with departmental goals and objectives. Definition The assistant principal (AP) supports the Principal in administering the instructional programs for middle school or

middle level center. An AP is a member of the team responsible for providing instructional leadership for a school or

center. The work involves assigned responsibilities in developing and implementing a sound instructional program,

supervising and evaluating the performance of staff members, maintaining the school plant facility, and serving as

liaison between the school and community. Work is reviewed and evaluated in terms of effectiveness of programs and

efficient operation of the facility.

Supervision Duties are performed under the general supervision of the school or center principal. Program plans are developed in

coordination with the principal. The assistant principal may provide general and/or direct supervision, as assigned, to

professional, para-professional and support staff members within the assigned school or center.

Distinguishing Characteristics This is the entry level to the school-based administrative series. Incumbents are expected to perform responsibilities of

an increasingly more responsible nature with experience.

Essential Functions of the Class

Assists in curriculum-related and instructional activities such as program development and evaluation, aiding in

the development of instructional goals by individual members of the school staff, evaluating staff, and advising

staff on methodology and resource materials.

Coordinates and maintains a system of pupil attendance.

Coordinates and supervises operational and support services activities such as student transportation, field trip,

schedules, student activities, fire emergency procedures and drills, community use of the building(s) and

building maintenance.

As directed, orders and is responsible for the distribution of textbooks and supplies.

Carries out a variety of administrative responsibilities including budget and fiscal procedures, due process

disciplinary procedures, and community relations.

Assists in the preparation of a variety of reports, forms, and surveys and in the maintenance of inventory and

other records.

Participates in the planning, developing, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and

materials including multi-media and reference materials. Assists in the observation, evaluation and training of

faculty and other staff.

Maintains communications and liaison with parents and with the civic community.

Participates in and supervises a variety of student activities, including inter-mural or inter-scholastic activities,

and oversees the maintenance of standards concerning student discipline, health, safety, and general welfare.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of modern public middle school education, and ability to apply

them to the needs of the school.

Thorough knowledge of curriculum and instructional techniques and materials, and current trends in middle

schools.

Thorough knowledge of school administrative practices and procedures (operations and instructional).

Good knowledge of curriculum and methods across grade levels and subject fields.

Ability to coordinate instructional programs, to plan and supervise the work of others, to develop effective

working relationships with students, staff, and the general public.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Training Requirements Completion of college with a master's degree in school administration with extensive responsible experience in

teaching as related to assignment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the

above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.

License/Certification Postgraduate professional license in one or more middle school subjects, or related fields and as a middle school

principal.

Physical Attributes

Work is generally confined to the school or center environment.

Sufficient mobility to patrol halls, grounds etc, and to climb stairs is necessary in some buildings. Lifting light

objects may be necessary.

Sufficient strength and dexterity to restrain students who exhibit aggressive behavior.

Hazards

Work environment may be noisy.

Work may involve student maladaptive behavior.

Work may involve exposure to student body fluids.

Unusual Demands Work may include evening and/or night time responsibilities.
