Personally Speaking “FINDING A VOICE IN THE QUIETNESS OF LENT”

Over the centuries Lent has lost its radical edge. For most people these days it is a residual custom involving the brief forswearing off of chocolate or alcohol, and perhaps in some churches, like Bethany, a small group gathers weekly to chat about religious stuff. Lent was intended to be so much more. Historically, Lent was a time for strengthening and for preparation: a time when fasting strengthened a pilgrim's flagging will-power; a time when prayer and meditation prepared the way for the renewal of baptismal vows during the great Easter vigil and celebration of the resurrection. It was based on Christ's forty days in the wilderness. The early followers of Jesus modeled Christ's fasting and prayer as preparation for the trials of their daily journey to remain faithful to God is all seasons of life. We also are called to a Lenten journey of deepening our spiritual lives so we can be strengthened by our faith and prepared to live as Christ's faithful disciples in the midst of the world's opposition. Followers of Jesus Christ are described in the New Testament as “a royal priesthood” and as the recipients of a “glorious inheritance” and an “incomparably great power” people with incredible potential and enormous responsibility; people with a duty- to speak with authority about that which is loving and true; our faith. Yet these days many of us seem to have lost our voice. So eloquent are the voices raised against faith, and often so subtly dismissive, that we no longer believe we have a right to be heard. The increasing frequency of attacks against our core values in the public forms seems to take the air out of the room for any real discussion of hope. Lent Begins Ash Wednesday, March 6

We gather for a special worship service on Ash Wednesday at 8:00 pm where we will mark the beginning of Lent with a communion service and the imposition of ashes for all those who desire. The ashes are a reminder that we are created from dust and to dust we shall return.

Session Seconds by Pastor Rea

Session seconds: briefer than the official session minutes while still recording the motions.

A session meeting was held on Thursday, February 21st. The highlight of the meeting was the examination of Victor Archer as a candidate for Ruling Elder. The session approved the nomination and moved to ordain and installation on Sunday, February 24, 2019. Pastor Rea presented the schedule and brief outline of the Lenten study “Finding a Voice” for this season. First a movie and brunch will be held at the manse on Saturday, March 9th from 11am to 2pm. The movie, “The King’s Speech” will be shown in its entirety at the manse. Then for the remaining Sundays in Lent a discussion will include segments of the movie alongside biblical passages for our study. These Sunday classes will occur in the Bethany Lounge following worship on March 17, 24, 31, and April 7, 14. The session discussed a potential change in Bethany’s By-Laws. A motion was presented to change the minimum number of voting members present at a Congregational Meeting in order to establish a quorum. The quorum at present for Bethany’s Congregational Meeting is the larger number of these two equations: (1) 10% of our total membership or (2) 25 members. Therefore, 25 members are needed to constitute a Congregational Meeting. Anyone present at recent Congregational Meetings remembers our stress in securing 25 voting members. The motion of session is to change the By-Laws to a single equation of 20% (or more) of our total membership. Now this motion will be presented at the next Congregational Meeting, which must have a quorum by the current standard of 25 members present, to officially hear the “first reading of a proposed change to the By-Laws.” Then at a later date, at lease two-weeks later, a second Congregational Meeting that must include of quorum of 25 voting members, again our current standard, will have the option to debate the motion, to approve the motion, or to defeat the motion. The session approved the request of the ABC Ladies to hold a Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday, May 11. The session spent time in prayer for the members and friends of Bethany we were aware of standing in the need of prayer. Finally, the session honored Al Jackson for his six continuous years of service on the session. Bethany is a better place because Al Jackson is here and serves with his whole heart.

Deacon Update: 2018 was another successful year for the Deacons. Despite working with a depleted workforce we were able to accomplish almost all usual activities. In 2019 we say a sad farewell to Victor Archer and welcome new Deacon Karen Sprague-Wong. Coning up next are the care packs for our college folks - followed by our Easter meals. We anticipate a busy year and will continue to serve the needs of the congregation. We are always looking for ideas and assistance so please let us know what’s on your mind. Marilynn Geiffert

“You shall be called repairers of the breach” (Isaiah 58)

In Isaiah 58, God issues a call and a challenge – to open our doors and share what we have with those in need. One Great Hour of Sharing is our direct response to the ways in which God has called us to share. Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The three programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing – Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People – all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope. One Great Hour of Sharing is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world. A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (receives 32% of funds raised)

Works alongside communities as they recover and find hope after the devastation of natural or human-caused disasters, and support for refugees.

Presbyterian Hunger Program (receives 36% of funds raised) Takes action to alleviate hunger, care for creation and the systemic causes of poverty so all may be fed.

Self-Development of People (receives 32% of funds raised) Invests in communities, responding to their experiences of oppression, poverty and injustice and educates Presbyterians about the impact of these issues.

Please prayerfully consider your gift to One Great Hour of Sharing, received during our Easter Sunday, 10 a.m. worship service on April 21 and join in God’s call to share our bread with the hungry, to aid and shelter people overcoming catastrophe and conflict, and to resource communities working to cast off the bonds of poverty and oppression.

Holy Week and Easter Dramas Well, Ash Wednesday is just a few days away and we begin the season of Lent. Spring arrives in just a couple of weeks; which means that Holy Week and Easter is not far away. It is time to think about the Holy Week and Easter Dramas that Bethany traditionally welcomes and blesses all who are involved and attend our worship services during this time. Whether you have been part of this drama worship ministry in the past or not, please consider joining us (again). These dramas provide a clear understanding of Jesus’s last days on earth in a most meaningful way. There will be only two rehearsals for our Maundy Thursday worship Service, “The Last Supper” and “Mini Trial.” Our first rehearsal will be Saturday, March 30th from 1:00pm to 2:30pm with the second rehearsal the following week on Saturday, April 6th. We typically only have one rehearsal for the Easter Sunday rehearsal the day before from 1:00pm to approximately 3:00pm with a cast/crew party immediately following. A schedule is included on the next page for your convenience. There are no small parts and every part and every involvement is important from a speaking/non-speaking acting role to helping with costumes, props, building/dismantling the set/cave and ushering. It takes many hands to make this happen. If we haven’t already spoken to you and you would like to be involved in some way, please see Cherie Cornell after worship service or contact her by phone @ 631-673-3820 or email: [email protected] during the next couple of weeks. We look forward to hearing from you. Submitted by, Edward Cornell – Co-director Bethany Drama Team Cherie Cornell – Co-director Bethany Drama Team

Religion 101. CROSS

We have all seen many styles of crosses, some quite elaborate. Ours, in church, is very plain. It is known as the risen or Sunday cross, as opposed to the one most commonly seen in Catholic churches. That one, with Jesus nailed to it, is known as the Good Friday cross. Orthodox churches add a tilted cross to portray the two others who were crucified next to Jesus. The tilt reminds us that one recognized Jesus as Lord, and would go to heaven. The other man cursed Jesus, and would be sent to Hell. Above the traditional cross is a smaller bar, which is really a sign, the one nailed to the cross calling Jesus “King of the Jews”. Our empty cross emphasizes the fact that Jesus is in Heaven, and has directed us to carry on his endeavors through our daily lives with the time and talents each of us have. The cross has not always been the symbol of Christianity (especially since it first represented a tortuous way to die). A fish, dove, lamb, and communion elements are also Christian symbols. Can you think of others? (if you know what a Chi Rho is, and can draw it, give yourself a star).

Turning a Dream Into Reality By Sookmin I. Harris

(In this article, Sookmin speaks about her thoughts and personal involvement)

I am a teaching assistant at Northport High School, and I am proud to speak of the Miss Minnie’s Kids Jamaica Project. What started out as a small girl’s dream became a collaborative community project which has exceeded all of our expectations. Miss Minnie’s Kids Jamaica Project was founded in December 2003, in honor of my grandmother and matriarch of the family, who was born and raised in Cane Heap, Jamaica. Thanks to the support from the Northport-East Northport School District, Interact Club, Northport Rotary Club, Brownie Troop 1431, friends, and family, we are now a non-profit organization in Jamaica and in the U.S.A. OUR HISTORY

In 2002 a few weeks prior to the Christmas Season my grandmother, Miss Minnie, passed away. Although a trying time, upon setting up funeral arrangements we learned from members of the community that on Christmas day she would give the children in our rural county a pencil, book, and breakfast Christmas morning. It was important for our family that we continue her tradition, so that year we went to the store and purchased the items Miss Minnie would have normally given the children.

Weeks later we returned to the United States, broken-hearted as our precious matriarch was gone, but also with a new passion to make sure our impoverished community of Cane Heap in Jamaica had something to look forward to on Christmas Day. My niece, and Northport High school alumni Jonathan Diah, told us she would forgo her presents for Christmas and in turn give them to the children in Cane Heap for the following year. We told her to write a letter to the family asking to help with the efforts and thus a new era was born. As a family, we no longer give each other Christmas presents, instead we write an annual letter to all our friends and family asking for new and slightly used toys to be shipped to Jamaica for Christmas. From the years of 2003-2006, the project was a family operation, funded and organized by our family. At that point we were shipping approximately 3 barrels of toys, and distrib-uting them Christmas morning. In 2006, we expanded to the general population, school clubs and Northport High School, and thus another new era began.

The response was extraordinary! Mr. Bajaj, advisor to the Project Tolerance Club, Mr. Dennis, advisor to the National Honor Society, and Mrs. Mislowack, advisor to the Interact Club all eagerly responded wanting to help with the project. Additionally, Mrs. Mislowack introduced the project to the Rotary Club of Northport, who came on board and sponsored shipping of the barrels to Jamaica. We were then joined by Brownie Troop 1431 who purchased plastic barrels, as a means of helping the project while simultaneously providing the community with a mechanism of water storage during drought season. Today, the advisors, administration, teachers, my colleagues, and the school clubs all participate in this project for which my family and I are so grateful. We now send nine barrels and three boxes containing books for the local school. We ship the barrels and boxes by November 17th, for them to be in Jamaica for Christmas. Since the initiation of the project, my family and I go to Jamaica to personally delivery them to make sure the gifts are received. Seeing the children’s faces, and joy in their eyes is when we really know everyone’s hard work has come to fruition.

WHAT DO I DO AS A VOLUNTEER

My job in Miss Minnie’s Kids Jamaica Project is to continuously liaise with potential sponsors and toy donors, organize the collection of toys throughout the year as well as the packing of the barrels, organizing shipment of the barrels and pick up in Jamaica, and finally distributing gifts Christmas Day. WHY DO I VOLUNTEER

Jamaica is my home of origin. I am blessed and was given the opportunity to come to the United States and become a citizen. I have a home in Northport and my family and I have been given the opportunity through hard work and much sacrifice to better our lives. When I go to Jamaica and see our children of St. Mary I feel we can make a difference in their lives even if it be but one morning on Christmas. WHAT ARE THE REWARDS OF VOLUNTEERING

It’s hard for me to explain rewards because it is not a cash flow…. It’s something within the heart. On Christmas morning or anytime a child receives a benefit from Ms. Minnie’s Kids there is a certain joy than is visible within them that if even for a moment is worth being a part of. HOW CAN OTHERS GET INVOLVED WITH THE ORGANIZATION?

There are many ways to get involved some are financial, while others are service oriented:

TO PARENTS / EXTENDED FAMILY

Miss Minnie’s Kids believes that if kids help kids, if kids become aware that there are children less fortunate than themselves and they willingly give up a toy of theirs to another child, they themselves will become more conscious and better global human beings.

TO TEACHERS

A teaching moment indeed. There are many organizations to give during the holidays, however what makes this program unique is the assurance that whatever is given to the organization is delivered to the child. How do you get this assurance? Because our family members personally deliver these toys. Getting organizations and clubs involved is indeed an asset to Miss Minnie’s Kids

TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF MISS MINNIE’S KIDS

A financial gift is always welcome. Each year we have more donations of toys that are costly to ship overseas. With an increasing number of children coming to the event Christmas day, we must provide more food for breakfast. Additionally, transportation expenses to get the toys from the loading dock to two hours away in the rural area of Cane Heap. All gifts are welcome, to help with these costs.
