I was an award-winning artist that was recognized in the greater New England area when Iwas in high school. These are 2 pieces, the top, an oil painting and to the right a hand drawing. When I was an undergrad at a liberal arts college, I was pursuing a degree in political science.During that time, a tension emerged whether I should pursue my skills in art or to divorce myselffrom my artistic passion for my major, although interesting was not fulfilling. It wasn’t untilI was introduced to a 20th century architecture history class that changed my life. It bothsatiated my artistic sensibility but more importantly it had a historical and political significancethat related to my studies of political science. 20th century architecture was influencedby changing political trends from communism to independence from colonial powers. Newideological thoughts only perpetuated new thoughts in design. Such new ideas in architecturewere becoming socialist, create minimalist designs to free the laborer from extraneous and excessivedetails. Let architecture be simple to transcend the purity it’s ideas rather than be adorned with traditionalgarishness..

Freehand Drawing

Freehand Drawing was the first design class I took when I first entereddesign school. It proved to be fruitful in training my eye and handas well as learning to work persistently for long hours ona project. More importantly drawing is a life long skill in architecturewhether it be sketching an idea or translating a concept to a client. This skill has paved the way for me as a student and a professional.

During that time period, a tension emerged whether I should pursue my skills in art or to divorce myself from my artistic passion for major that was interesting but not fulfilling. It wasn’t until I was introduced to a 20th Century Archi-tecture History class that changed my life. It satiated both my artistic sensibilities and my appreciation for history and politics. 20th Century architecture was influenced by changing political trends from communism to independence from colonial powers. New ideological thoughts only perpetuated new thoughts in design. New concepts in Architecture were becoming socialist, there was a drive to create minimalist architecture to free the laborer from extraneous and excessive detailing. Let architecture be simple and pure and not hide behind the garishness of ornament.
