HEARING PROTECTIONThe level at which employers must provide hearing protection and hearing protection zones is now 85 decibels (daily or weekly average exposure) and the level at which employers must assess the risk to workers’ health and provide them with information and training is now 80 decibels. There is also an exposure limit value of 87 decibels, taking account of any reduction in exposure provided by hearing protection, above which workers must not be exposed.

Ear protection will give different levels of protection at different frequencies and most are better at higher frequencies than lower ones. Most manufacturers label their products with a single simplified noise level reduction (SNR). Usually ear protectors will have an SNR of between 20 and 30dB, which is a rough indication of what the manufacturers claim the noise exposure reduction will be if worn properly.

Hearing protection falls into two broad categories: earplugs and earmuffs.

High-attenuation earmuffs are normally more effective for high level noise as they can reduce levels by up to 30dB. For very high noise levels, earmuffs and earplugs can be worn together.

Earplugs come in a wide variety of forms and some are intended just to reduce irritating noise. To protect against noise they should have an SNR of at least 20dB. There are disposable and re-usable ones and both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The table alongside gives an indication of the protector factor that is likely to be suitable for different levels of noise (the noise level during a particular work task, not the daily personal noise exposure). It is based on the single number rating (SNR) value provided with a hearing protection device. The information is intended as a guide.

FIT TEST KIT 10301There are two main reasons for doing Bitrex testing. Firstly to make sure that the respirator itself is suited for the wearer’s particular face shape. Secondly to make sure that the respirator is fitted correctly to get a tight seal and ensure safety against hazards in the workplace. HIGH VISIBILITY CLOTHING High visibility clothing is a form of personal protective equipment (PPE) worn so that people can be easily seen by drivers and pedestrians on site. High visibility clothing should be used alongside other safety measures, particularly by those working near traffic. Personal protective equipment regulations 2002 and the personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992 (as amended) give the main requirements.

Is it suitable for the risk?Choice of clothing should take into account ambient and artificial lighting conditions at the workplace, and the effect of conditions such as fog and snow.

For some jobs an HV waistcoat, for example, may be all that is needed, but those workers who are particularly at risk, eg from moving vehicles (marshallers or maintenance workers), may need full body HV clothing so that they are as visible as possible to the driver. HV clothing should provide adequate protection both during the day and at night, as well as in adverse weather. As a rule: the darker the conditions or worksite, the greater the amount of HV clothing required.

To be effective HV clothing should be of a colour that will allow the wearer to stand out against the ambient background found in the working environment. In practice the best colours for this purpose are likely to be day-glo, or fluorescent yellow. Where necessary the clothing should also incorporate retro-reflective material to make the wearer visible when seen in headlights in poor lighting conditions or during darkness. This may require reflective strips at or below waist level on waistcoats or jackets, or strips on trousers.

Is it suitable for the job?People working in warehouses may find that some types of loose fitting tabard may snag on moving machinery parts. Also HV coats may be too warm in summer months, in which case, waistcoats or overalls with the appropriate HV qualities could be supplied. Remember: PPE must always be suitable for the work; if the way of working changes - check that the PPE is still suitable.

Is it suitable for the wearer?HV clothing should be comfortable and fit the wearer properly. It should cause the minimum of restriction in the wearer’s movement.

Is it compatible with other forms of PPE?If two or more types of PPE are worn, they should not interfere with each other. Therefore, in the case of aircraft servicing staff for example, protective clothing for chemical spills should also provide the necessary level of conspicuity. Similarly, wet or cold weather clothing should have suitable HV qualities or be capable of being worn under HV garments.

Are there any standards which the clothing should meet?HV clothing should be manufactured to a recognised standard. The new British Standard for high visibility warning clothing is BS EN ISO20471. This is a harmonised European standard produced with the legal requirements for PPE in mind. Clothing which conforms to the standard is marked with a pictogram like this:

The first number (X) indicates the class of conspicuity, this depends on the minimum area of conspicuous materials that are incorporated into the clothing, with Class 3 being the best and Class 1 the lowest; the second number (Y) indicates the retroreflection performance with Class 2 being more visible than Class 1 when seen in headlights during darkness. The standard gives specifications for coveralls, jackets, waistcoats, tabards, trousers and harnesses.

Except as provided above, no servant or agent of MMS has any authority to vary these terms or accept other terms proposed by a Customer which are inconsistent with these conditions unless confirmed in writing.

Payment Terms• Unless otherwise agreed in writing the company’s terms of trade are that Accounts

shall be settled nett thirty days.• Unless otherwise specifically stated the purchase price is deemed to exclude Value

Added Tax and this will be added where necessary. All prices quoted are liable to VAT standard rate.

• Interest may be payable at the rate of 2% per month on all overdue debts.• MMS reserve the right to suspend or terminate supply and lower credit limit in

default of payments by Customer.

Delivery• MMS will endeavour to meet any delivery date quoted but delivery dates are given

and intended as an estimate only and if there are any circumstances whatsoever which prevent or delay delivery, MMS shall not be bound to supply or make delivery of any goods ordered nor shall it be liable for any damage or consequential loss or in any other way for failure to supply or delay in delivery when so prevented or delayed.

• Carriage paid on orders over £200 in the United Kingdom. (£500, nett carriage paid if the order contains Liquids/Janitorial/Paper products only, £300, nett carriage paid if the order contains Liquids/Janitorial/Paper products and PPE/Workwear, £200 nett carriage paid if the order contains PPE/Workwear only.)• Delivery within a 20 mile radius of one of our branches will be free of charge if the

order is valued over £50• All goods must be inspected immediately on arrival. Under no circumstances shall

MMS be liable for damage to or from a consignment unless MMS is notified within three days of receipt of the goods or in the case of non-delivery unless notice is given within fourteen days of the due date of arrival.

Returned Goods• MMS will not accept the return of goods for any reason unless prior agreement has

been received from MMS. Collection will be made only with a valid collection note.• Goods returned because they are not required will incur a 15% handling charge.

Goods returned after 30 days of receipt of invoice will not be accepted.

Risk & Title• It is a condition of the contract that the property in all the products delivered by

MMS to the Customer shall remain vested in MMS until MMS has received in cash

or cleared funds payment in full for the products delivered and all products agreed to be sold by MMS to the Customer for which payment is then due.

• Until payment due under all contracts between the Customer and MMS has been made in full the Customer shall hold the products upon trust for MMS.

• Until such a time as the property in the products passes to the Customer, the Customer shall hold the products as the company’s fiduciary agent and bailee and shall keep the products separate from those of the Customer and third parties and properly stored, protected and insured and identified as MMS’s property.

• Notwithstanding that the property in all products to be delivered to the Customer by MMS shall remain vested in MMS until MMS has received payment in full, the risk of damage to or loss of all or any such products shall pass to the Customer forthwith upon delivery or deemed delivery thereof to the Customer and as from such date of delivery or deemed delivery the Customer shall be liable to pay MMS the contract price for such products whether or not the same are damaged or lost prior to this date that the property therein shall pass to the Customer.

• Until such a time as legal title in the goods passes to the Purchaser MMS may at any time require the Purchaser, its liquidator, (administrative) receiver or administrator to return the goods and/or may repossess the goods by entering upon any premises of the Purchaser or any third party where the goods are reasonably believed to be stored.

Warranty• Save as is specifically set out herein MMS shall have no liability (however arising)

in relation to any loss suffered by the Customer or any third party arising from the supply of the products (however caused).

• If loss, damage or deterioration (other than for death or personal injury) is caused by MMS negligence, MMS’s liability shall be limited to the invoice value of the goods.

• Employees of MMS are not authorised to make oral representations as to the quality or fitness for any particular purpose of any products. If a representation is made or an opinion expressed orally which materially affects the Customer’s decision to place an order for any products the Customer should ensure that such details are confirmed in writing by a duly authorised officer or employee of MMS so as to form a part of the contract, no liability can otherwise be accepted.

• MMS shall not be liable to the Customer or be deemed to be in breach of contract by reason of any delay in performing or any failure to perform, and of MMS’s obligations in relation to the products, if the delay or failure was due to any cause beyond MMS’s reasonable control.

Waiver• The rights of MMS shall not be prejudiced by any indulgence or forbearance

extended by MMS to the Customer and no waiver by MMS in respect of any breach shall operate as a waiver in respect of any subsequent breach.

Jurisdiction• These conditions shall be governed by, and construed in all respect in accordance

with English Law.

TERMS & CONDITIONSThese conditions form an integral part of every contract or agreement for the sale and/or supply of goods and/or services (‘the products’) by MAINMAN SUPPLIES LIMITED (MMS). Unless specific alterations or deletions agreed in writing on behalf of MMS, these conditions shall apply in their entirety to all quotations made and all orders accepted on behalf of MMS.
