BRIEFING: We need to develop a system of reliable methodology that maximizes

creativity in this creativity exercise, and we need to push ourselves to be more creative with tangible advice and instruction. We are expected to

provide creative leadership and solutions, and how to create creativity is a big part of this project.

EXERCISE:

08-28-2017 We got the introduction on the first day, and we split the material duty, ev-ery person will buy 1 or 2 kinds of materials for the group. then we created a message group to help us keep in touch easier. In the first two classes, we tried brainstorm first, but we switched to play the materials. We made ideas during playing, and Joel and I could feel lots of mechanical movement from the straw and rubber band. Brook found interesting instruments from the material. Then I draw them based on what we find in the material. I felt we get lots of ideas during playing, it is easier than just think-ing.

Professor Wesley let us use “creative methods and techniques” file. It helps me a lot to understand the methods. He asks us to use 7 methods to create our project. Here are our final ideas for creating cre-ativity.

Page 5: PERSONAL METHODOLOGY PROCESS BOOK€¦ · PROJECT 02 GROUP MEMBER: GABRIEL, DANNY, TROY, PUYI DATE: 09/20/2017-10/11/2017 BRIEFING: This project is about Human Nature. We need to

08-30-2017 Brooke, Joel and I made a “noodle man“ by playing materials, we tried to do “just cut material“ to create new stuff. But finally, we just used the mechanical the-ory that we found during the class. But the final result looks like a funny noodle man, and we won the challenge, which is a very interesting experience.

09-05-2017 We discussed how to be creative and finished our presentation slides in the school. it contains our basic creative process. We also inserted a video in the presentation, so it can help the audience understand our movement easier.

Page 6: PERSONAL METHODOLOGY PROCESS BOOK€¦ · PROJECT 02 GROUP MEMBER: GABRIEL, DANNY, TROY, PUYI DATE: 09/20/2017-10/11/2017 BRIEFING: This project is about Human Nature. We need to

6

09-06-2017 We presented our presentation, but it might be too focused on mechanical movement. We got advice from Professor Wesley, so we decided to rethink of our cre-ative methods and process. And we changed our pre-sentation format to one from Prezi during rest of this week.

09-11-2017 Joel, Brooke and I met at school and working on our presentation slides. Emre did some mock-up for our project. We almost finished the presentation slides at this time.

09-13-2017 We went over some presentation methods so telling a story and mak-ing it sound natural is the key. So Joel decided to start off with the introduction and then introduce mind mapping.

Page 7: PERSONAL METHODOLOGY PROCESS BOOK€¦ · PROJECT 02 GROUP MEMBER: GABRIEL, DANNY, TROY, PUYI DATE: 09/20/2017-10/11/2017 BRIEFING: This project is about Human Nature. We need to

09-16-2017 We created a google doc for our presentation process. Everyone choose their own topic and wrote down what they want to say. Everything orga-nized.

09-18-2017 We reviewed all the stuff we have and did the presentation.

DEBRIEFING: It is a very good start to learn methodology process. The creativity process gives me a clear organization about creativity. Group work gives me more ideas and my group

members are very nice. After reading our professor’s advice in the Beachboard, I think we need make it more interesting, and emphasize in the future.

GROUP MEMBER: GABRIEL, DANNY, TROY, PUYIDATE: 09/20/2017-10/11/2017

BRIEFING:This project is about Human Nature. We need to discover and document

consumer opinions, expectations, images and symbols of quality and value. We need to discover their special necessity under their culture or niche market and using that information to design a product that can be

sell well. We want to know what they want.

Page 9: PERSONAL METHODOLOGY PROCESS BOOK€¦ · PROJECT 02 GROUP MEMBER: GABRIEL, DANNY, TROY, PUYI DATE: 09/20/2017-10/11/2017 BRIEFING: This project is about Human Nature. We need to

09-20-2017 First day of this project. After the introduction we had a brainstorm, Gabri-el felt strongly about Vintage Jeans, and Danny thought Techie makes good opposite. We found a few place to do an interview, finally, we decided to choose Melrose Flea Market and I went to the market to see what are they selling and what items are pop-ular on Saturday. I saw lots of used stuff, antique stuff, antique styles clothes girls. We were focus how to know what is the best product for our focus consumers, so I was trying to talk with sellers to make a complete research to help us finish our process. hen, I sent the pictures and information to our message group to talk. The PA book is a very good guide when we were working with a group. Professor Woelfel gave us very important advices during our work.We decided to do research on the first day we got this project briefing although we didn’t know what the final idea is, we are happy to do some market research to help us warm up.

09-25-2017 We changed our topic to Vintage clothing after talking to Professor Wes-ley, and specified techie to programmers and set up interviews. Then we mapped their information and made the first presentation slides.

09-30-2017 Everyone gotten their in-terviews, Troy did one template for the interview but we thought it was too com-plicated, so we decided to use my simple template. We finally chose travel luggage, Danny did luggage study and a map on luggage.

1.What draws you into buying a product?Longevity, usefulness

2.What would consider an object of value or quality? Depends on what it is, how big of a purchase. What was your last big purchase?Been a while… the one I’m about to make and have done a lot of research on is a mirrorless camera. I’m close to buying it, I just have so many options I don’t know what to pick

3.How would you define quality and value? (origin, history, material, finish)Depends on what it is.

4.What creates brand loyalty for you as a consumer? Do you currently have any brand loyalty, if so why?To an extend, Apple. In the sense that I have to do less research about them before purchase. They are consis-tently good, but that’s not to say I don’t do any research beforehand or buy all their products. 5.What are your expectations from a product or object? A certain level of quality. It has to not feel cheap, re-gardless of price. Has to feel worthwhile. Like buying a spatula, has to not feel cheap.

6.Do your purchase illicit an emotional response (Prior to purchase and Post purchase)? Does this dictate the likely hood that you will purchase this product? Some… My bike was meaningful, also my speakers. The speakers were meaningful because in my last apartment I has shitty speakers. And this was my first own apartment I was fully furnishing myself. First high quality purchase of what I bought. Felt like I was making the place my own. Also did a lot of research beforehand to make sure it was what I wanted. But no emotional response when shopping. I always go in knowing what I want. There’s no discovery.

7.Is price point an factor when purchasing an item?Does price relate to quality?Yes, definitely! Somethings are worth more, somethings are worth less. I just bought a pair of Ortlieb bags. They’re a lot more expensive than necessary. Can get a regular bag for one third of the price, but since it’s an item I will use everyday it was worth spending more on.

8.When purchasing things, does trend affect your decisions? No.9. Do you believe your purchases are a form of self expression?Yeah, think so. What you choose defines who you are.

10. How important are personalization options? No personalization is not necessary for me

11. Do you subscribe to any blogs?Magazines (Print or Digital: Please specify)?Subscription to The Atlantic (print)

12. At one point or another we have all purchased something we regret in hindsight, what was the reason for the regret (quality, impulse)?Generally quality if I just buy some cheap version of whatever it is I recently bought outdoor string lights. Didn’t do enough research and they turned out too bright.

13. What is one of your favorite purchases and why?Probably my road bike, since it’s enabled me to go so many places and actually be decently fit.14. Do you do any market research before making a purchase? Only key, wallet, phone.

15. Do you have an EDC (Every Day Carry) that you are never without? For moderately expensive purchases, or things that will be used every day and expected to be durable I’ll read through a lot reviews and different products before committing.

Erik PWake up, bike to work (or bike up a hill somewhere if I wake up early enough), shower, eat some gra-nola bar or whatever for breakfast, pick up where I left things off the previous day. Due to meetings and figuring out priorities for the day I don’t gen-erally get much done before lunch. After lunch, I’ll make coffee (pour over, generally) and work until 5:30-6. Bike home, shower, make dinner, then I’ll watch a show, work on a side project, or just

hang out with my roommates or girlfriend.

A certain level of quality. It has to not feel cheap, regardless of price. Has to feel worthwhile. Like buying a spatula, has to not feel cheap.

1.What draws you into buying a product? If it is a clothing product, it’s purely the fact of whether I think it will compliment my body and style. If it is anything con-cerning home decor it’s a mixture of functionality and rustic appearance.

2.What would consider an object of value or quality? Anything that makes me genuinely feel good about myself despite whether it fits into the most recent fad or not.

3.How would you define quality and value? (origin, history, material, finish)In terms of quality, depending on the item, I think it’s all dependent on durability along with well constructed appear-ance. In terms of value I think a lot of what places value on an item is sentimentality and the time and effort that was put into crafting an item.

4.What creates brand loyalty for you as a consumer?Amazing customer service, and consistent satisfaction on my end.Do you currently have any brand loyalty, if so why?I do currently have brand loyalty to nearly all of the local small business owners in my city (Redlands, CA). This is mostly because they always have amazing customer service, I admire what it takes to start your own business. Also, although every business is driven based on profit, I think local business owners genuinely care about the consumers in their home town, driv-ing them to provide a better product.

5.What are your expectations from a product or object? My expectations are simply that a product or object lives up to what it was advertised to be and that I’ll be happy that I bought it.

6.Do your purchase illicit an emotional response (Prior to purchase and Post purchase)? In terms of clothing, prior to purchase, if I see something that looks really good on my body, then I will usually let out some sort of audible and unintelligible noise because it’s hard to find clothes that fit me due to my incredibly small size. Post purchase, I don’t really react because it’s not something I’m recieving anymore it’s something that’s mine now. Does this dictate the likely hood that you will purchase this product?Definitely

8. Is price point an factor when purchasing an item?Yes. I am a high school student that is to busy for a job so I don’t have the luxury of spending all my parents hard earned money. Does price relate to quality? Not always. For example I once bought at a $60 shirt that ripped while I was walking around school the day after I bought it.ing at for the business it doesn’t, but as a consumer buying for personal reasons there definitely is a psychology involved.

9. When purchasing things, does trend affect your deci-sions? To an extent, I am a teenager and I cannot act like I am not influ-enced by trends; for the most part, though, I like what I like.

7. Do you believe your purchases are a form of self expression? Yes, whether you’re buying something for purpose of style or practi-cally, one’s purchases as a consumer say something about one values.

10. How important are personalization options?Extremely important in some industries, such as the cosmetic indus-try and clothing industry. Not so much with things like technology.

11. Do you subscribe to any blogs? Magazines (Print or Digital: Please specify)? No

12. At one point or another we have all purchased something we regret in hindsight, what was the reason for the regret (quality, impulse)?Usually the point of regret was that I bought it because the seller was charming, not because I liked the object.

13. What is one of your favorite purchases and why?One of my favorite purchase was my first pair of thrifted Levi Jeans because I felt practically for buying a durable product for a low price.

14. Do you do any market research before making a purchase? Not typically unless it is concerning a cosmetic product.

15. Do you have an EDC (Every Day Carry) that you are never without?Yes, my phone, my car keys, and my identification.

10-02-2017 Danny made PA map of people and overlap before class, and then We did project presentation slides and talked about the following work. We got advices from profes-sor Wesley, and we known our whole process plan at that time. Then we finished the interviews in template slides.

10-09-2017 Troy missed class due to traffic and fire, Danny and me made and set up to do list and we planed to get all personas done by night.

10-10-2017 We tried to finish all the staffs. After a short talk, we separated the job, and wrap up personas. Danny made a persona map and hero’s journey. Gabriel did research and slides on cul-tures, and I did key triggers and pain point, final persona page. We worked as a group to map people and overlap with stuff to find op-portunity. Danny did recommend we do a big poster. After discuss we decided to print few 11x17 poster to show audience persona to help them understand our tar-get customers and our product.

10-11-2017 We continued to do our presentation slides, and pointed out our duty for the slides, and then we did the presentation. We finish all the stuff on the morning of the last day, but we got all we need for the presen-tation.

DEBRIEFING: I really enjoyed the last night we were working together. I think combine work alone and work as a group is a very good idea because I could walk in their study room to discuss my questions anytime and got the response immediately. It improved the ef-ficiency. Persona was my favorite part. Although Tech and Vintage lover has a similar side, they all have their own specific style, so persona is very important for our final

result. Also an methodology process need lots of details to get a better result because more information can give us a good viewpoint to find what is the final product.

10-16-2017 After the brief-ing, we separated the duty and talked about the inter-view. Sean and Gabriel had someone to do the inter-views.

10-18-2017 We talked about our 5 years plan with Professor Wesley. I was not really sure which direction of industrial design job I really want to focus on. Professor told me “If I were you, I will choose the one I like.” , then I kept thinking what job is I really like to do. I did the personality test and I felt I like function, but I also like UI design, so I wanted to do some interns, and then decide which one I should do more.

10-23-2017 During the following two weeks, we met two times besides the class time. We tried to finish our interview but it is a little hard to find. I tried to make our ppt looks clean and simple, but Gabriel and Emra wanted little tech feeling, and Emre found his favorite type. Then we decided to use Emre’s template. We also talked about our own slide, we tried to keep similar slides and 2 or 3 for each person. Sean made personal template for us.

11-06-2017 We went to Nectar workshop and visited their shop to learn how do they work, and then we have a challenge. It was a time-limited challenge, and it gave us pressure to pay attention to do a better job. I thought we all like the chanllege because we learned from this. Professor Wesley bought sandwiches and drinks for us, and we all like it!

Left two pictures shows some methodology pro-cesses in Nectar.

DEBRIEFING: This project asked myself self-thinking a lot. People can not know what will happen in the future, but people can always guide themself. This research and analyzes are good for you plan your future but not planed by other people. Design trends research is a

good way to start your plan too.

11-13-2017 It was the first day of this project , after we had the briefing with Professor Wesley, we chose Graw. We liked grow because it contains a lot of nature changes. And we decided to have a google doc so we could do research and post all we have. Each of us had 3 slides to post our research and ideas. Sub-sections of grow(spit up):Land-danbi and Puyi, water-Danny, air-Joel and Lorraine. Then we were addigned climate change research and plan to met on the second day.11-14-2017 We talked about more ideas, I thought the panglin packaging is a good idea, Danbi really liked the Moss buddy, cucumber idea. We also talked our ideas a lot through messages. We still not sure what we wanted to do at this time, but we had lots of biomimicry researches..

11-20--2017 We didn’t have class this week, but we were talked all we need through messages in the begining of this week.11-27--2017 We did research in workshop on Cyber Monday and made a chart in the workshop for student vote. We were thinking made a family-vertical-garden.We were also thinking to made a eco-system between two glass windows, or made a window like a container, or like a glass table. Students votes lead us to the window, then Joel and Lorraine made mock up on the next day.

We wrote down all the ideas we like, and analyzed their feasibil-ity, opportunity, interest, mock-up chance, and development chance.

12-04-2017 After we talked with Professor Wesley, we had no concrete ideas about our current proj-ect so we dropped the window’s idea. And then we redo chart to decide project. Danny liked city skin, I liked packaging, Danbi liked moss buddy, Joel and Lorraine liked commercial indoor farming. We made 3D parts as plant container, but we dropped this idea again because it is hard to make it stand as a stable wall.

Finally, Lorraine talked about the umbrella , then we decided to use this idea. on the second day then we make a quick mock-up by 3D printers. The top part is like a sunflower can track son and it can collect wind and transfer it to electric energy.

We talked about video’s timeline, and Lorraine made the time line board. I like how it looks.

DEBRIEFING: Our time was tight because we changed our project in the last few weeks. But I

thought we did right decision because the project is worth it. A good product is better than a normal project and we didn’t let a good idea dropped. This product can offer

more convenience to people, save lots of energy, and help people to reduce pollution. We will do more research and development to make it better in the next semester, and

I hope to see it bring convenience to lots of people in a public area.

12-11-2017 We met at 8am to warm up our presentation and test our prototype. Then we played our video during the presentation and shows our prototype to the audienc-es and Professor Wesley.
