PRE'ACE TO THE SERIES
THERE are two reasons why Ihave written these books : first
,
in response to thousands of my pupilsthroughout this country and Canadawho desire the instruction in amore tangible form than simplythrough the medium of the voice ;second, that the general public mayhave the result of thorough
,honest
,
and unbiassed investigation extending throughout a period of thirty-fiveyears .Having kept abreast of the times
,
I am fully aware of the conclusionsother writers have reached
,especially
on spiritism ; and am further conscious of the fact that, with few exceptions, I do not, in the main, agreewith these However, my decisionshave in no way been influenced by anywriter
,not even by my friend, the
late ' r. Thomson 'ay Hudson, whomI first met in 1 899. When our pathsconverged
,we found we had been
P R E ' A C E T O T HE S E R I E S
travelling on parallel lines for twenty
-five years . Comparing notes, Iwas pleased to learn that we had arrived
,practically
,at the same con
elusions ; therefore, there may appearto be much of Hudson In my writings, and it could not well be otherwise
,
especially on spiritism. I felt highlyhonored to have so great an authoritybear so corroborative testimony.
By consulting the topics treated itwill be observed that I have covereda much wider field than those whohave preceded me
,having touched
upon every phase of Psychic Phenom ena. This I have done as brieflyand concisely as possible and practicable
,and while my decisions are
positive,they are neither arrogant
nor dogmatic.E . B . W.

I consider Mr. Edw ard B.Warman the peer of anyman in his line; in fact , I know of no one who coversso w ide a field. His experiences inMental Telegraphyare e'ual to any I have ever known ; he is the mostpractical psychologist it has ever b een my pleasure tomeet; his explanation ofHypnotism removes all fear;his sifting of the grains of truth from the ChristianScience doctrine leaves nothing to b e desired; hisexegesis of Spiritism is scientific and logical, acknowledging
,as every thorough investigator must, the
alleged phenomena, b u t denying, as every logicianmust
,the alleged cause. His Suggestions to Mothers
are simply invaluab le.I heartily commend him for his sound doctrines .
INTRO'UCTOR'
PERSONAL magnetism is not tobe confounded with ' magnetic
healing,nor with the mesmeric
fiu idic theory,” nor with that
which is so extensively advertised totransform the ' human wall-flow erinto the adm ired of all adm irers .It is
,nevertheless, a wonderful pow
er that is in a greater or;lesser de
gree possessed by every one,but we
should not lose sight of the fact thatit is not always of the most attractivecharacter. It may, however, be madeso
,as its attractive feature is su scep
tible of great cultivation.
We often hear one say,
' I wish Ihad personalmagnetism. ' ou have .Every one has. What you should
say is,I wish I had attractive mag
netism . 'ou may have . In the following pages it has been my pleas

its qualities of attraction and repul
sion. The veriest wretch of a city ’sslums possesses attractive personalmagnetism for his kind ; but thatsame magnetism will repel one ofhigh and pure motives. Every public speaker
,every business man,
every teacher,either compels, repels,
or impels. Thus it may be seen thatthe very same Influence may haveexactly opposite effects on differentpersons . We see that demonstratedevery day In every public gathering.
When we come within the atmos
phere of a strong personality we areinfluenced either in mind or body
,
sometimes both. What is it that influ ences us ? One may be beautifulof face
,form
,and figure
,and may
be exquisitely dressed,yet be unat
tractive . On the other hand, one may
be homely in feature,lacking sym
metry of figure and form, neatly but
plainly dressed,yet be attractive .
What constitutes the difference ? It1 2

is not what one appears to be,but
what one actually is . It is the truecharacter of the man.
' Character,”
says Moody,' is what a man is in the
dark.
” A man is what he is throughheredity
,environment
,and educa

what he is,if what he is is not desir
able . But what he is,and not what
he appears to be,is manifest to every
close student of human nature. This something that lies hidden, this unseen but ever-felt power, iswhat we call ' personal magnetism.
”
It is personality as distinguishedfrom individuality.
This subtle ' something has probably never been more nearly expressed than in the following excerptfrom ' Maurine

On the other hand,it is not the

,
and are at the same time repelled asregards having a closer relationship .
We frequently hear the remark,‘ I
like to hear that man talk, but I do
not care to meet him. The thoughthe expresses is good
,but there is
something about the man himselfthat repels me.” What is it ? The

much more attractive.Health of body and bodily development are dependent largely on mental conditions. It is through the mindthat various physical abnormalitiesare externalized in the body.

lived and thought,these atmospheres
have been left behind him. They areassociated with chairs where peoplehave sat for some length of time. They are associated w ith clothing ;and a change of clothing is thereforesufficient, at times, to change the stateof mind. They come with books andletters, sometim es revealing more ofthe personality that sends them forththan the person would wish. Theydraw people together and cause themto think alike. There is an atmosphere about
some people that warns one not tocome too close, while in other casesthere is instant affinity and sympathy.
One occasionally meets people whosevery presence is a lasting stimulusand an inspIration. One seems to takeaway something besides the merememory of a noteworthy interview ;and some people forget their troubles, lose their aches and pains
,and are

ing with a helpful friend. Some people compel attention or obedience bytheir presence
,and exact a surprising
amount of service and homage fromother people.
' Character, then, is not onlywritten in the face
,expressed in con
duct and language, but is sent forth asa thought atmosphere . Atmospheresimpinge and leave their impressionson each other, revealing the nature, thought
,and feeling of the personal
ity that gives rise to them. This is,evidently
,the reason why first im
pressions are usually correct,and
why depression and other states offeeling are passed from m ind tom ind. Some delicately organizedpeople find it inadvisable to go intosociety except at rare intervals ; forthey get entangled in these atmos
pheres, and do not know how to throwthem off. Others seem to have thehappy art of leaving a part of themselves behind

PERSONAL MAGNETISM MENTAL
This may be acquired,in part
,in
its most attractive form,by obtaining
a thorough all-round intellectualknowledge. It is not enough
,how
ever, that the mental storehouse bewell stocked, for that of itself wouldpossess no attractive feature ; but, instead of manifesting a selfish spirit inwithholding the good things gleanedfrom the intellectual field
,we should
freely give them out. We are alwaysenriched by u nselfishly g iving ; to
'
withhold would be to secure only inpart. If a vessel were loaded with themost precious gems
,and it remained
anchored in river,lake
,or ocean, its
cargo would possess no value whatever
,the value depending upon its

destination and disposal. So it iswith the goods in the intellectualstorehouse Crive freely of yourknowledge and gems of thought
,and
by so doing you will not only refu nction your brain cells and kindleanew the intellectual fires
,but you
will be adding to the attractive features of your mental magnetism. A
stingy man,intellectually or other
wise,is never attractive .
PERSONAL MAGNETISM SPIRITUAL
The acquirement of this particularphase of magnetism comes as the result of the development of thosefaculties known as the emotive. AS
this is unquestionably a soul facultyit is closely link ed with all things of aspiritual nature . When overdevel
oped it leads to emotional insanitv.
'ust as the mental magnetism isstrengthened by gathering togetherthe best of its kind and utilizing the

same ; just so, the spiritual magnetismmay be developed by coming in contact and in close sym pathetic touchwith all that is highest
,purest, and
noblest. ' Those who bring sunshineto the lives of others,
” says '. W.
Barries,
' cannot keepit from themselves. ” True
,every good thought
,
every good word, every good deed isreflex in its action and thus enrichesthe giver. Therefore we should loseno opportunity to say the right wordat the right time and in the rightplace. Its value and its influence youmay never know
,nor is it necessary
that you should. Byron says
' Allwho joy would winMust share it

”
It has been well said Opportunities are the fuel of life ; ability is thematch which kindles it ; and willpower is the fan which keeps theflame alive.
2 4
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
Opportunities are everywhere present ; we need not seek them. In thecrowded thoroughfares of life wejostle our brother on the right
,we
jostle our brother on the left, too
often regardless of the sorrows thatwe might alleviate, the Shadows wem ight dispel by just a word

a warm hand-grasp,and thereby give
a spiritual uplift not only to the onein whose life we cast the ray of lightbut also reflexly to ourselves .
When our eyes melt not with an

Professor Riddle says, When youfind a fellow that is weaker thanyourself give him a boost ; the exer
cise will give you strength.
Allthings are reflex, in the spiritual as well as in the mental realm. Ifthe world gets the best from you today
,it will pay you back in your own

coin to-morrow. On the other hand,
if you seek revenge the same lawholds good ; for in taking revenge”
you are but even with your enemy,
but in passing over an injury you aresuperior. Revenge is so far beneaththe man that is calm t hat he cannotreach it even by stooping. When injured he does not retaliate ; he wrapsaround him the royal robes of calmness and then goes quietly on his way.
'When men speak ill of thee,
” saysPlato ' so live that nobody will believe them.
”Such thoughts as get
ting even,
”if cherished
,swell and
overflow the entire being,leaving in
their wake a psychic malaria . Weshould develop the good points andsubdue the unattractive ones. Everything excellent requires perseverance .Have you obstacles in your pathway ? Overcome them. Go over themrather than around them. They mayprove stepping-stones to a higherplane. Uniform success is dangerous .

back of it all there is a purpose and, sometime

shall have been learned,that purpose
may be revealed to us,and through
our tears we may see the wisdom ofthe trials and tribulations throughwhich we were obliged to pass, andour spiritual magnetism Shall partake of the purifying process

As a practical illustration of doinggood when the opportunity presentsitself
,I cite but one case in many as
an aid to the development of thespiritual magnetism,
a case comingunder my own observation .
On a bright and beautiful morning,When all nature was refreshed andthrobbing with the rejuvenatingspirit we call Life, a man exceptionally well developed physically
,and
fairly well developed mentally andspiritually
,his Soul in unison with the
beautiful and invigorating surroundings this man met a brother man
,
an entire stranger, who was out of
harmony with these same surroundings. Noting the dej ected look onthe face of the stranger
,he saw an
opportunity to say the right word atthe right time and in the right place ;therefore
,out of the very fulness of
his soul he said, with a pleasant voiceand cheery smile
,Good morning
,my

friend ; a bright and beautiful morning this. The stranger halted
,looked at the
man in a peculiar manner, and with
eyes bedimmed said,
' Is it possiblethere is one man in all this world tocall me friend ; one man to bid me apleasant good-morning ?” Then
,as
if half talking to himself,he said
,
' I ’11 not do it
,I ’11 not do -
it.” ' ' o
what ?” inquired the man of health.
' I was just going to end it all at theriver
,b u t you have saved my life by
your kindly greeting.
”
Both were benefited ; both had aspiritual uplift ; seed was sown onfertile soil that brought forth fruitafter its kind. Let us ever bear inm ind that our greatest happiness isreflex ; it is that which comes back tous from the joy we have given others .In no better way can you cultivateand develop spiritual magnetism.

PERSONAL MAGNETISM PH' SICAL
I purpose dwelling longer on thisphase of magnetism than on the twoothers
,because its cultivation and
development form a foundation uponwhich to build much stronger structures of m entaland spiritu almagnetism.
This physical magnetism may beacquired by the generating and conserving of that vital principle we calllife. Physical exercises alone will notdo it
, ,as they often tend to dissipate
2
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
the power that should be husbanded.
There is as much difference betweenphysical strength and vitality asthere is between energy and force. Aman may have a wonderful physique
,
and yet be lacking in vital force ; onthe other hand a man may be slightin build and apparently weak
,and
yet have great vitality. So it is withenergy. Power is energy in repose ;force is energy in action.
Even in physical attractiveness itmay be suggestive of brute strengthonly. This is the case where the animal overbalances the mental and thespiritual. Man is, by nature, a tri-unebeing mental
,spiritual
,and physi
cal,and should be so developed as to
be attractive from all sides of histhree-fold nature
,but the over-devel
opment of any one of these m ay beproductive of abnormalities to suchan extent as to result in m onstrosi
ties ; for there are mental and spirit
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
ual monstrosities just as surely asthere are physical monstrosities.
WHAT IS THIS POWER ?
Personal magnetism (physical) issometimes called human electricity.
Be that as it may,by whatsoever name
it may be known, its character is cer
tainly electrical. This electro-magnetic influence isof a vibratory character
,and gener
ated by the principle of life. Thisvital
,energizing element becomes
stale by non-use ; wasted by over-use ;and produces nervousness by m isuse.Electricity is
,somehow
,insepar
ably connected‘
with the ultimateatoms of matter ; and in the same mysteriou s manner the universal lifeforce is connected with every nerve
,
fibre,and molecule of animal crea
tion If electricity and nerve-forceare not identical
,they are so nearly
34
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
Allforce is generated within fromthe life essentials—air
,food
,and
water. The same elements exist forall persons
,but all persons do not
have the same force . While the difference may be one of temperament orconstitution, I am inclined to thinkit is more largely due to the fact thatby some persons the elements withinreach are not fully utilized.
HOW TO UTILIZE AN' ECONOMIZE IT
It is not altogether what we earn, but what we save, that counts in thelong run. It is the husbanding ofthe forces within us.Professor Riddell has aptly said' The electric dynamo is an expression of power. There are four general ways in which it may be directed : (1 ) It may be passed throughthe motor of the electric car
,and the
force is expressed as power ; (2 ) itmay be passed as a sympathetic cur
36
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
rent through the little w ire of theincandescent bulb, and it becomeslight ; (3) it may be forced througha wire with heavy resisting power
,
and it becomes heat ; (4) ground thewire, and the current is wasted.
”
Let us apply this principle to thehu m an dynamo
,and see how much
it has to do with personal magnetismphysical
,mental
,spiritual.
In every man and woman there isa life battery
,so to speak ; a creative
force,a life principle which
,lik e the
electric current,may be directed in
four special ways : (1 ) ' ou can passit to the muscles and build it into tissue
,and it becomes power—physical
strength ; (2 ) you can direct it to thebrain
,and it becomes light— intellect
ual brilliancy and mental vigor ; (3)you can direct it to the emotions, andit becomes heat— feeling, love, sympathy ; (4) but if you dissipate theforce
,you will have neither physical
strength,mental vigor
,nor emotional
37
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
warmth. It will readily be seen thatyou cannot waste the force in anydirection without detracting in acorresponding degree from yourstrength of personal magnetism inother directions.
SEL'-PROTECTION
As all electrified bodies tend to partwith their magnetism to the earth
,it
follows that human electricity is being constantly subjected to this influence . Should it be drawn OHin u n
due proportion to the needs of thebody, the system becomes weak andderanged. It thus becomes necessaryto conserve the human electricity.
This is done by insulation ; by placinga non-conducting substance—usuallyrubber
,or cork and rubber between
the outer and inner sole of the shoe .This is done when the shoes are made .Silk hose answer the same purposeso long as they remain free frommoisture .
38
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
Bu t, says the wiseacre,how
about prim itive man ? He did notneed that protection.
”' ery true
,but
we must also remember that prim itive man needed no clothing to proteet him from heat and cold becausein an absolute state of nature perfecteconomy existed in this matter. Ifwe did not violate nature in so manyways we would have no need to econom ize on this one . Civilization requ iresthat all natural forces be temperedand controlled. The strenuousness ofmodern life makes greater drafts upon the vitality, and we live less in thesunshine and fresh air. Thus, insulation is a preventive and safeguardpromoting health and longevity, andadds greatly to physical magnetism.
This theory may seem antagonisticto the believer in nature-cure
,who
seeks health by coming in direct contact with Mother Earth. Be that asit may
,the earth is negative to the
human body. Such being the fact,39
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
the earth is constantly drawing off
the physical magnetism. If the earthis your sole benefactor
,regardless of
air and sunshine, stand or lie upon it
where the fresh air and sunshinenever visit. My word for it, you willsoon he In it instead of on it. Buildfour walls around a tree and cover itover with a roof
,how long will it con
tinne to thrive ? The earth has nothing to give you except in her products, and even for these she is dependentupon the sun. Allgood comes fromabove Breathe deeply of the sunmagnetized air and, through thechemical action of the air and waterand food
,your physical magnetism
may be generated, and by proper in
sulation will be conserved. We givetoo much credit to the earth
,too little
to the fresh air and sunshine .Insulation is a scientific safeguard.
To the soldiers of the Civil War wasissued a rubber poncho . It was notfor the purpose of insulation but to
40
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
protect us from the rain. But itserved a double purpose and thereinthe Government builded better thanit knew. That poncho was a saviourto thousands when weary
,footsore
,
heartsore,with the physical force
well—nigh depleted ; for in beingplaced underneath us when lyingdown it insulated us from the earth, and conserved not only the little forcewe had left but that which was gencrated during the night from the lifegiving elements of our sumptuous (dinner—w e called it supper then. ItI S a logical sequence that we cannothave physical magnetism withoutphysical health and strength, andthese cannot be had when we dissipateour forces ; hence the wisdom of insulation.
The human body is an electricalbody.
. This is not mere speculativetheory
,but the result of thorough in
vestigation and practical demonstration . However, if a conclusion is
4 1
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
logical,it matters little whether it is
deduced from theory or practice .This is especially true of the following conclusions which have beenreached from experiments ; thoughthey may not be very readily acceptedby the general public. Other thingsbeing equal
,the left side of the body
is negative, and the right side is posi
tive ; the front of the body is positive, the back is negative . ' ou take inthis human electricity through thenegative side of the body (left) , andit passes out through the right if anyone is on the right side to draw it. Ithas been scientifically stated that thehuman body is bathed on the rightside with an alkaline fluid ; on the leftside with an acidulous fluid.
This fact of the positive and negative sides of the human body thewriter has scientifically proved to thefullest satisfaction of the honestsceptic. Therefore, it is well to re
42

physically strong, you should takethat opportunity of ' loading up” bykeeping on the right side.Whenever two persons sleep together
,and one is restful while the
other is restless, you may depend up
on it that the restfulone is unconsciou sly drawing the life force of hisor her companion. It does not alwaysfollow that the weaker draws fromthe stronger ; nor is it a question ofright side
,front
,or back when one is
Sleeping, owing to the many changesof position that occur during thenight ; therefore, in order that therestless one may have restful and refreshing sleep, it is necessary tochange conditions. This is aecom
plished by changing sides (the sidesof the bed) with your fellow-sleeper.Why ? Because it equalizes the magnetism . How ? The fact is sufficient, the how is but a mere incident. How about the other fellow ? If hehas been restful
,will he now become44
P E R S O N A L M A G N E T I S M
restless ? That depends. If the restful one is surcharged with physicalmagnetism the loss will not be perceptible ; but if one has but an average amount, the loss at first may beapparent, but in a very short time theforces will be so evenly balanced thatthe restful condition will be sharedequally by both.
Many of my pupils have tried thissuggestion, have proved its efficacy, have been astonished and pleased atits results, have recom m ended it toothers with whom it has been equallyefficacious ; and yet, in the face of allthis evidence, some of them ask me ifI do not think it is
,very largely, if
not all, due to imagination.
My answer is : If you think it isImagination, and it does the work, just take some more imagination. Icare not what name you give it or towhat cause you ascribe it, if you secure the end in view and obtain thedesired results. What more can you
