1 Terms and conditions
Who can apply? Anyone with dedication to - and experience in regard to – human rights of
and social justice for persons of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics who meets the requirements set out below is welcome to apply.
The main target group for the internship are persons who are at an early stage of their career
Outline, responsibilities and conditions of the internship positionsILGA World seeks five programme interns in the areas of:
1. UN Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures2. UN Human Rights Council, UPR, and Business, Workplace and LGBTI
Equality3. Research4. Gender Identity, Expression & Sex Characteristics5. Communications
Duration: 6 months each Start of Internships: February 2021 Deadline for applications: Thursday, December 10, 2020 at 1:00 pm Central European Time
These are exciting opportunities to join ILGA World, the global LGBTI membership-based organisation with more than 1,600 member organisations in over 160 countries.
The interns will provide assistance to ILGA World’s staff, this means:
1. The Programme Intern on UN Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures will work with and report to Kseniya Kirichenko, Programmes Coordinator (UN Advocacy, Women and Training)
2. The Programme Intern on UN Human Rights Council, UPR, and Business, Workplace and LGBTI Equality will work with and report to Gabriel Galil, Senior Programme Officer (UN Advocacy, Human Rights Council and UPR)
3. The Programme Intern for Research will work with and report to Lucas Ramón Mendos, Research Coordinator
4. The Programme Intern on Gender Identity, Expression and Sex Characteristics will work with and report to Chamindra Weerewardhana, Senior Programme Consultant (GIESC Programme)
5. The Communications Intern will work with and report to Daniele Paletta, ILGA World’s Communications Coordinator
The internships are a great opportunity for somebody who has an interest in human rights and LGBTI issues and wants to gain experience in working for an international human rights organisation that represents LGBTI organisations,

communities and movements on a global stage. They are aimed at LGBTI human rights activists who are at an early stage of their career.
All internship are six months long and will start in February 2021. The internships are virtual, and the intern can be based anywhere with good internet connection. The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work full-time (37.5 hours/week). The intern receives a financial compensation of CHF 750 per month.
Tasks and requirements for all internships:All intern candidates should
have a particular interest in and commitment to LGBTI/SOGIESC human rights;
have experience (paid or unpaid) in NGO work, in community or grassroots organizing, advocacy or other activist work, preferably in the LGBTI sector;
be well organized, motivated and able to work remotely; have a good internet connection during the internship; have a very good level of written and spoken English;
and preferably should also:
speak and write in another UN language at a good level;
Specifics for the internships:a) Programme Intern on UN Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
Organizing notifications of ILGA World members on the upcoming deadlines and opportunities related to treaty bodies and special procedures;
Collecting, organizing and supporting internal database of treaty bodies’ practice on SOGIESC;
Compiling quarterly reports on Treaty Bodies’ sessions, analysing recommendations and preparing video materials;
Supporting drafting and delivering joint statements for dialogues with special procedures;
Attending, either in person or virtually, treaty bodies’ and Human Rights Council sessions and other relevant meetings;
Providing technical support to defenders engaging with treaty bodies and special procedures, supporting drafting shadow reports and other submissions;
Providing support in the development of training materials on treaty bodies;
Carrying out organizational and administrative tasks to support the programmes.
Specific requirements for the Intern on UN Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures
Candidates should

Have basic knowledge of the United Nations human rights system; Possess good research skills in law, policy, social sciences or a relevant
field; Pay attention to details and have the willingness and ability to work with
large amount of data and information;
and should preferably also
Have direct experience of engagement with one or more human rights mechanisms, especially Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures;
Have knowledge or experience on intersectional forms of discrimination, including gender, disability and/or race, and
Have a good level of written and spoken Spanish.
b) Programme Intern on UN Human Rights Council, UPR and Business, Workplace and LGBTI Equality
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
Drafting reports for Human Rights Council sessions, and the Universal Periodic Review Working Group sessions
Compiling recommendations made during the UPR Working Group sessions
Support the SOGIESC UPR Advocacy weeks Supporting notification of ILGA World members on the upcoming deadlines
and opportunities related to the UPR; Providing technical support to defenders engaging with the Universal
Periodic Review Attending Human Rights Council and Universal Periodic Review sessions

recommendations Support research on Business, Workplace and LGBTI Equality Assisting ILGA World’s UN Programme staff in the development of new

Candidates should
at least have a basic understanding of the UN mechanisms gained through study, work or other experience in the UN System
and should preferably also

c) Research Intern
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
Assisting ILGA World’s Senior Research Officer in conducting desktop research on legal issues regarding human rights and sexual orientation.
Conducting desktop research on other issues related to SOGIESC relevant to ILGA World’s research program;
Preparing and drafting background notes and briefs; Assisting ILGA World ’s Senior Research Office in editing and proofreading
research products; Assisting the Research Coordinator in managing, organizing and
maintaining ILGA World’s database; Assisting the Research Coordinator in managing, operating and
maintaining internal tools for media monitoring and documentation. Convening and moderating meetings with contributors, translators,
designers and other partners, and following up on their work with ILGA World;
Carrying out organizational and administrative tasks to support research needs.
Specific additional requirements for the Research Intern
Candidates should have
strong research skills on legal issues related to SOGIESC and human rights;
the ability to independently conduct complex legal issues and present research findings in an organized and methodical manner. High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
awareness of the cultural nuances and community developments in language and concepts relating to sexual orientation and around gender issues;
Proficiency in handling substantial amounts of research of data. Organised and methodical data management, updating and storage;
Basic knowledge of citation methods; Competency in working with partners: building and nurturing key
relationships;
and should preferably also
Previous experience in paid or non-paid legal research work; Knowledge of international human rights law; Participation or authorship in one or more legal publications, preferably on
SOGIESC issues;
d) Programme Intern on Gender Identity, Expression and Sex Characteristics
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
Support the SPO GIESC in developing the intersex portfolio of the organization

Support SPO GIESC in organising key events such as the Trans Advocacy Week
Work with SPO GIESC in developing GIESC-related research and dissemination initiatives.
Work with and support ILGA World’s Trans and Intersex Committees and their Chairpersons
Work with the SPO GIESC in organizing intersex related events Support trans and intersex activists in engaging with UN mechanisms such
as Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, UPR, HRC Supporting the Programmes Team staff in issues pertaining to gender
identity/expression and sex characteristics Carrying out organizational and administrative tasks together with other
UN Programme staff members.
Specific additional requirements for the Intern on Gender Identity, Expression and Sex Characteristics
Candidates should
Be well connected to GIESC and organisations globally Have a good knowledge of intersectional feminist approaches to the
promotion of gender justice Have an understanding about how GIESC rights and indigenous people’s
rights intersect Have good knowledge on issues pertaining to sex characteristics, and
intersex justice Have worked for or volunteered with gender identity/expression and/or
intersex led initiatives, groups or organisations
e) Communications Intern
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
Write, edit or proofread effective website articles (including the weekly LGBulleTIn), social media copy or other communication outputs
Assist the Communications Coordinator in the planning and development of campaigns - including in the production of visual materials (infographics, videos and more)
Research and fact-check news for ILGA World newsletters and website entries
Organise a daily press review to monitor ILGA World’s presence on mainstream media, as well as global LGBTI-related news
Curate and produce content for the organisation’s social media editorial calendar
Assist the Communications Coordinator in the preparation of podcast episodes (organising interviews, assisting with audio editing, and transcribing the episodes)
Map the glitches in the ilga.org website, and assess the need for potential changes and updates
Support ILGA World programmes by promptly uploading documents, updating website pages, and editing videos when necessary
Maintain contacts with volunteer translators

Specific additional requirements for the Communications Intern
Previous experience (including volunteer work) in a communications role - preferably in the non-profit sector - OR/AND undergraduate or graduate degree in communications, journalism or another related field
A demonstrated interest in SOGIESC issues, and in keeping oneself updated on LGBTI news from all around the world
Have knowledge or experience on intersectional forms of discrimination, and an interest in using communications skills to raise the voices of the most marginalised
Excellent level of written and spoken English Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Fluency in using social media for
advocacy or organising purposes. Interest in exploring emerging technologies
At least a basic knowledge of HTML language Ability to work independently and collaboratively to produce strong,
compelling and creative written and visual content
and should preferably also have
intermediate to advanced written and oral fluency in Spanish. Basic comprehension skills of other UN languages (French, Arabic, Chinese and/or Russian) are also an asset
experience with content management systems and web content creation in Drupal 7
experience in using the Adobe Suite (especially Premiere, Illustrator and Photoshop, Audition, AfterEffect) or similar graphic/sound/video design tools
have knowledge on making communications outputs more accessible to people with disabilities
Internship conditions: The internships are virtual; no relocation to Geneva is expected or
supported by ILGA World The intern will be expected to work from their current location The intern will receive a compensation of CHF 750 per month for the
duration of the internship The successful interns will have opportunities to work with representatives
of LGBTI organisations from around the world and other NGOs virtually and/or in Geneva

written tasks carefully and demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria as this informs the shortlisting process. The shortlisting process is based on an evaluation of each of the sections.

Process after application
We expect to communicate our decision to shortlist a candidate by January 6, 2021. Please bear in mind that, if you have not been contacted by the end of the year, this means that you have not been shortlisted for the position.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a written task that will be sent on January 8, deadline to deliver the task is by Tuesday January 17, 2021.
Interviews to candidates who are admitted to the final stage of the selection process are expected to take place in the weeks of January 25 – 29, 2021.
The interview itself will last approximately 45 minutes.
The selected candidates will be notified by the end of January/early February 2021.
