Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel the Disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus teaches them what we now call the “Our Father”. It begins by calling on God often and being open to God’s will or plan in our lives. Next we ask for God to fulfill our needs. Then we also ask for forgiveness for our sins, but there is a caveat to this request. We also have to forgive the sins of others. Finally, we are to ask God to be with us in both the good times as well as the tough times. Jesus continues the passage by encouraging persistence. We are persistent in our requests, but also in our building of our relationship with God. Relationships require trust and trust requires time. So we need to persist in building that relationship of trust with God. Then we will be able to handle whatever comes our way. This week we received a message from our recycling company. The message is that now we will have to pay for recycling. In the beginning we recycled at both St. Agnes and St. Kieran to raise funds for our parishes and schools. Join Fr. John and Fr. Tom and your friends from St. Agnes and St. Kieran for morning mass, Tuesday thru Friday morn-

ings at 8:00 AM at St. Kieran Church. We are all in the spirit….and in the spirit of

    “Renew My Church!”

Wow! There may be nothing scheduled, but it sure seems that things are busy behind the scenes...getting School and RE students registered, getting a new Liturgy and Music

season ready, preparing for RCIA and the Wedding season, getting the classrooms and school clean and shiny for a new year, looking into the Women’s Welcome retreat, the Golf

Classic...and so much more! We hope that you’re enjoying every minute of the summer,

Your friends at St. Agnes Parish & School

WANTED: SCHOOL FAMILY OR PARISHIONER FOR LAWN MAINTENANCE AT ST. AGNES

We are in great need of someone to cut the grass on the grounds around the church, the play lot and the yard behind the rectory. Ideally we would love for it to be cut on Thursday or Friday so it is in fine shape for the weekend. This could be an opportunity to volunteer for your parish or to possibly receive tuition credits if you have a student that goes to St. Agnes School. Please call Kay Ashby with any questions at 709-2694.

process the garbage they collect. So we will be removing the recycling bins from both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. I am a proponent of recycling, so I encourage you to continue to recycle at home. Thanks to everyone who over the years collected paper to raise money for our parishes. As we near the beginning of August I wanted to give some heads up for mass changes we will be putting in place for the Feast of Our Blessed Mothers Assumption on August 15th. This year we will have two masses between both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. We will have an 8:00 AM mass at St. Kieran on August 15th and a 7:00 PM at St. Agnes on August 15. This will make it so more of us worship together for the feast. We are stronger when we are together! This is another way to continue the mission of Renew My Church. In a few weeks St. Agnes School will open for the 2019-20 school year. If you haven’t registered, what are you waiting for? Karen Hamilton the School secretary can give tours and help with registration. The school telephone number is 756-2333. Don’t delay, call today! This also goes for registration for the St. Agnes/St. Kieran Religious Education program. Registration has been ongoing since April and will close August 30th. There will be no exceptions to that date, so call now so you can get your questions about the program answered and get your children registered. Mrs. Klopp our coordinator can be reached at 754-0713.

focus of their final meditation on life and religion. Its seven petitions summarize everything we need from prayer. Its bold claim to be God’s deeply in faith and in the network of believers who also believe that God keeps every promise and will welcome us into eternity after death. There is no greater expression of Jesus’ own trust in his Father. Jesus adds to his instruction on prayer a short parable about persistence. Sometimes called “A Knock at Midnight,” the story of the man who comes to a neighbor seeking bread to feed some unexpected visitors illustrates the need to refuse to take no for an answer when we go before God. When we persist in prayer, our prayer deepens and our relationship with God deepens by being tested.

The parable was famously used by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in an early sermon to challenge the churches for sleeping behind locked doors when the world came begging for the bread of justice. King learned well the lesson of persistent prayer during the long struggle for civil rights for black Americans. Any prayer inspired by love and justice will be answered, we believe, but not without our own engagement with God’s will over time and not without courage to see it through no matter what. Jesus ends the parable by saying that persistence will win what even friendship does not gain. How much more confident we should be, then, knowing that friendship with God is always on our side when we pray.

    Fr. Tom’s Thoughts

    ...hmmmm

Fr. Tom thought it might be important for us to be aware of our Bishop’s and sometimes, other’s statements regarding some of our nation’s current issues. Look to this space in upcoming bulletins. The atmosphere of welcome is increasingly necessary in confronting today’s forms of distancing ourselves from oth-ers. This is profoundly evidenced in the problem of millions of refugees and exiles, in the phenomenon of racial intoler-ance as well an intolerance toward the person whose only “fault” is a search for work and better living conditions outside his own country and in the fear of all who are dif-ferent and thus seen as a threat. —John Paul II, Welcoming the Poor: Reigniting Hope

    Music Corner

Dear Friends, When the school bells start ringing and the halls start filling up with students, we know that summer is about over and it is time to begin anew. For most of us there are two seasons of renewal. The first is Spring with its new life and color. The second, I believe is the Fall when life begins a new direction and focus. The summer has traditionally been break time. Well, it is the same for our music program at St. Agnes! So it is time to ring the bells and get our choirs back together for another year of joyful song! I would also like to thank all of the musicians who helped us throughout the summer. Your dedica-tion is gratefully appreciated. As we look to another year of music at St. Agnes, we begin with this letter inviting any parishioner to join our choirs. There is a contemporary choir (Ensemble) that sings at our 11 o’clock liturgy. Or you may be inclined toward our traditional (Chancel Choir) choir at the 9 o’clock liturgy. For those who have limited time but may be available during weekday mornings we ask you to consider the Resurrection Choir that offers music for the parish funerals. For the children of the parish we invite them to participate in our Children’s Choir. Each of these groups help the rest of us in our role as singers of God’s praise! Another important ministry is that of Cantor. We also invite you to join our Bell Choir and our Young Adult Choir (high school/college) that are both flexible groups that will work with your schedule. Please, please consider joining our Parish Music Ministry this year! Don’t leave this to someone else...the numbers of our choir members have changed and every voice is important! If you enjoy singing or music in general, this is the ministry for you and your family. Kindly give me a call at 219-678-8726 or 708-709-2694 for more information. With more volunteers and your generosity, we will continue to make beautiful music to the Lord right here at St. Agnes! Peace, Carl Opat Feel free to email me at [email protected].
