The inclusion of this type of Athenain imitations in the Samaria hoard, establishes the existence of a local mint (maybe Gaza or Ascalon)cf.Numismatic Chronicle 1996, (pps 1-9, for a hoard of 31 coins of thistype found at Ascalon], or even a Samaritan mint) striking this coinagefor local acceptance to supplement the distinctive local coinage ofSamaria. The hoard was buried about 346-5 B.C. and thus thechronological implications indicate this issue to be prior to that date.

The diadem with cross is a well known symbol for royalty. The hint ofthe interpretation of this symbol is provided in the Babylonian Talmud.(Kerithoth 5,2 “Our rabbis have taught: `In anointing kings one drawsthe figure of a crown (diadem) and with the priest in the shape of theletter chi’ (cross).”). This symbolism is similar to a group of the coinsissued by Herod. Herod was not a priest he but may have used his coinageto describe symbolically the co-operation between the kingship (thediadem) and the priesthood (chi or cross). The coins probably indicatethe removal of the high priesthood from the hands of the previousdynasty by Herod and the subsequent investiture of a priest undergovernment control, consequently Herod has some association withthe priesthood.

The anchor mixed with the double cornucopiae also appears on thecoinage of Alexander Jannaeus and Herod Archalaus. The Shekels and half shekels of Tyre are of special interest to this seriesof Ancient Jewish and Biblical coins as Jews had to pay an annual sum tothe Jerusalem Temple of one half shekel [This Coin type] and theonly acceptable money were the half shekels of Tyre. They were widelyavailable in Jerusalem and well known for their true weight and goodsilver. It is also believed that the “thirty pieces of silver” paid to Judaswas made in Tyre as shekels.
