Perseus Alekto Varangian Percy the Younger

Perseus Alekto Varangian Percy the YoungerThe House of Varangian is an aristocratic family which has dabbled in the politics and economics of both Nemedia and Aquilonia for centuries. With the recent developments in both kingdoms, the Varangians have had some minor setbacks particularly the loss of certain holdings in Aquilonia seized by the new King Conan. The patriarch of the Varangian family is the Baron Dional Varangian advisor to the king and financier of several royal projects in Nemedia (three border fortresses, a cavalry regiment and a new highway linking Aquilonia and Nemedia) .

Percy has an older sister, Persephone, who has excelled in the political chess of the royal court advancing her own ambitions in the context of the House Varangians general advancement. It is rumoured that she has been personally responsible for the deaths of two rivals to the Varangian house. Of course, her father loves Persephone as he sees his own ruthlessness and attraction to violence reflected in his daughter. If court rumours are to be believed, Dional has every intention of naming Persephone as the heir to the Varangian Household a potential scandal, as Nemedian patriarchal society expects all holdings to be passed onto the son. Thus, her sobriquet Percy the Elder and the insulting nickname for Perseus Percy the Younger: reflecting the relative status of both siblings. In contrast to his sister, Perseus has grown up far away from the politics of Nemedia. An interest in biology, medicine and botany has been encouraged by his doting mother, the Baroness Salinder Varangian. While still possessed of the faculties of the Varangian name, particularly the ability to order and lead men, Perseus is not so wise in the ways of the world removed as he is from it in his countryside mansions and academic halls.Truth be told, Percy the Younger would happily continue in this vain for the rest of his comfortable life. Unfortunately, his sister Percy the Elder does not feel the same way what better way to eliminate patriarchal barriers to her inheritance than eliminating the patriarchal heir?

Fortunately, the Baroness has gotten wind of her daughters scheming and has made her own plans. Under the pretence of a study trip to the farther reaches of Hyboria, to research rare and wondrous plants, she has sent her son away from Nemedia.

Of course, Percy not so wise with his money or possessions has managed to lose a large part of his travel-allowance through various activities: usually at the behest of his travel-companion, a Bossonian by the name of Brandt.

Nevertheless, Percy still meticulously records his travels in his journal parts of which he regularly sends onto his mother back in Nemedia, along with various entreaties for more money. His mother tries to send him money, when she can, despite the difficulties in finding Percy regularly in his travels. In the meantime, she collects his stories, with intention of publishing it as a book at some stage. In the meantime, Persephone Percy the Elder - watches her mother very carefully for any sign of where her brother may be found
