The Society was founded in 1967 with the aim of promoting the advancement of earth science particularly in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. The Society has a membership of about 600 earth scientists interested in Malaysian and other Southeast Asian region. The membership is worldwide in distribution.
Warta Geologi (Newsletter of the Geological Society of Malaysia) is published quarterly by the Society. Warta Geologi covers short geological communications and original research, as well as reports on activities and news about the Society. It is distributed free-of-charge to members of the Society. Sincethe44thAGMon23rdApril2010,theGeologicalSocietyofMalaysia(GSM)hascontinuedwithitsobjectiveofactivelypromotingtheadvancementofgeologicalsciencesinthecountryandsurroundingareas.Overthepastyear,theflagshipeventsandpublicationsofGSM,designedtostrengthencapacityofgeoscientistsweresustained.
TheNationalGeoscienceConference(NGC2010)wasco-organizedwiththeMineralsandGeoscienceDepartmentofMalaysiaon11-12 June2011 inShahAlam.ADialogueon theGeologistsActwasheldon11 June2010, inconjunctionwiththeConference,tohighlightaspectsrelatedtotheimplementationoftheActanditsimplicationstopractitioners in thecountry.ThePetroleumGeologyExhibitionandCongress (PGCE)2011co-organizedwithPETRONAS,washeldon7-8March2011 inKualaLumpur.Bothflagshipeventswereverysuccessfulandwellattended.WethankourinstitutionalpartnersandcollaboratorsaswellastheOrganisingChairsandtheircommitteemembersfortheirsupport,contributionandunwaveringcommitmenttoGSM.

Attendance to the technical talks needs to be improved. One way forward is to institute mechanisms incollaborationwiththeInstituteofGeologyMalaysiaandtheBoardofGeologistsunderGeologistsAct,2008(Act689),torevitalizethecultureofcontinuouslearningamongpractitioners.
Publicationof thetwoflagshipproductsofGSM–Bulletinof theGeologicalSocietyofMalaysiaandWarta Geologi–isnowup-to-date.Theeditorialprocesshasbeenimproved,withtheappointmentofaManagingEditor,aProductionEditorandGuestEditors,reportingtotheEditor.ThisispartoftheeffortinmakingtheBulletin,whichisnowaScopus indexedpublication, an ISI indexedpublication, servingas thepremierpeer-reviewed recordofgeoscienceknowledgeonMalaysia.EffortswillbeintensifiedundertheleadershipoftheincomingEditor.
The linkages ofGSMwith COSTAM,AAPG and EAGE have beenmaintained over the past year. The in-comingCouncilwilldiscusswaysonstrengtheningcollaborativeactivities,particularlywithAAPGandEAGEinthecontextofthePGCE.GSMisthehostofthepermanentSecretariatforGEOSEAandismandatedtoensurethatorganizationofGEOSEAin2012inThailand.Communicationonthismatterhascommencedandwillincreaseinthecomingmonths.GSMwillcontinueitsprogrammeoninternationalizationandstrengthencommunicationwiththeCCOP,IUGSandIAEG.
GSMstillhasamajor role toplay inpromotingeducationandknowledgegeneration. For thispurpose, it isnecessaryforalluniversities, particularlyuniversitiesthatprovidegeology, earthscienceandgeophysicsknowledge, tocometogether, discussandprovidequalityeducationprogrammesandresearch, tosupportourcolleagueswhoprovide professional services to themarket. GSM,with support from theMinerals andGeoscienceDepartment,InstituteofGeologyMalaysiaandtheBoardofGeologists, canfacilitatethisbyprovidingaplatformforstakeholderstocometogetheranddiscussmatterspertainingtocurriculumdevelopmentandpromotionofcentresofexcellenceforresearchandtraining, atthepostgraduatelevels.
Geosciencepractitionershavesomuchtogainbycapitalizingonthestrengthofexistinggeoscienceknowledgeproviders within universities; so that synergies can be created to produce well trained graduates, to support theexpansionofthegeoscienceprofessioninthemarket.Itishightimethatacademics, researchersandpractitionersofgeosciencefromthegovernmentandprivatesector, get togethernotonly tosee the“bigpicture”,butcreatea“picture”thatwewantforthewellbeingandsustainabilityofgeoscientistsinourcountry.Tokickstarttheinitiative,afocus-groupdiscussionwillbeledbyGSMVice-PresidentDr.MazlanMadon,totakestockofthecurrentscenariointhepetroleumsector,particularlywithrespecttothefutureofthePGCE.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - 31 DECEMBER 2010
1. PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES
The objective of the Society is to promote the advancement of the geological sciencesin Malaysia.
2. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
(a) Basic of AccountingThe financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost conventionand comply with applicable Approved Accounting Standards issued by theMalaysian Association Standards Board.
(b) Plant and Equipment Plant and equipment is stated at historical cost less accumulated depreciation. Depreciation on plant and equipment is computed on the straight line basis
calculated to write-off the cost of the assets over their estimated useful lives. The principal annual rates used are:-
Office equipment 10% Computer 20%
The carrying values of the assets are reviewed for impairment when thereis an indication that the assets might be impaired. Impairment is measured bycomparing the carrying values of the assets with their recoverable amounts.
An impairment loss is charged to the income and expenditure account immediately, unless the asset is carried at revalued amount. Any impairment loss of a revalued asset is treated as a revaluation decrease to the extent ofpreviously recognised revaluation surplus for the same asset.
Subsequent increase in the recoverable amount of an asset is treated as reversal of the previous impairment loss and is recognised to the extent of the carrying amount of the asset that would have been determined (netof amortisation and depreciation) had no impairment loss been recognised. The reversal is recognised in the income statement immediately, unless the asset is carried at revalued amount.
c) INVENTORIES Inventories consists of compass and maps valued at the lower of cost and netrealizable value.

Question on Matter Impacting on GSM Scientific Reputation and Credibility: Despiteallthathadbeenwrittenandspokenfor12years from1998 to2010GSM44thAGM,itwillbehelpful ifGSMCouncilcouldclarify whyit was (still is) of the opinion that the continuing promotion and sale of its 1996 Reprinted Edition Hutchison (1989) as recently as February 2011 globally on internet (in fact soldpast 15 years 1996 to 2011), a GSM publication which denounced Malaysia Government Geological Survey (Minerals and Geoscience) Sabah Jurassic radiometric ages (Kirk 1968; Leong 1971, 1974) through falsified geological fact and data (Leong 1998, 2009), had not been a constraintto the achievementor even a violation of GSM Object as stated in its Constitution?
