Fleuri Perron 1866-1931

As a young man in Montreal, Fleuri Perron heardBishop Grandin speak o Western Canadian settle-ments like St. Albert. At the age o 17, Perron rstmoved west to Egg Lake, 10 miles north o St.Albert, and then nally settled in St. Albert in 1896.For the next 30 years, Perron would have a signicantimpact on the community.

Once established in St. Albert, Perron boughtseveral local businesses, including the WindsorHotel, which he renovated extensively; the generalstore located on main street (now known as PerronStreet); and at the turn o the century, he openedthe Perron Brickyard, employing 20 local men andoperating until 1932.

Aer working as a businessman and entrepreneur,Perron began his career in politics in 1904 by servingon the rst St. Albert own Council. He was elected

as the second mayor o St. Albert in 1908 and served three terms. Additionally, Perronwas the rst Vice-President o the St. Albert Board o rade, and the rst President o theAlberta French Canadian Association.

During this time, Perron continued nding new business opportunities. In 1912, he

purchased the 30-oot St. Teresa paddle wheeler to give boat tours o the Sturgeon Riverand Big Lake area to local residents. Te boat later moved to Lac St. Anne when the localwater levels dropped too low.

Perrons lie and the citys were drastically changed when the Perron General Store wasdestroyed by re in 1919. Te re was particularly devastating as the general store hadserved as a trading post or northern residents as ar away as Athabasca, and as a casualmeeting place or local residents. Following the re, Perron opened a butcher shop acrossthe street and rented another store in the mid 1920s on the site o his original General Store.

Although Perron le St. Albert or several years during an economic downturn in the1920s, he eventually returned to live out his remaining days. Following his death inAugust 1931, his son Eugene Perron continued the amily tradition and purchased thegeneral store business that his ather ran or the last years o his lie.

Perron District HistoryTe downtown district o St. Albert experienced a period o greatexpansion at the beginning o the 20th century. By 1908, the down-town area eatured two banks and hotels, several retail and serviceoutlets, as well as a blacksmith, drugstore, and butcher shop. In theollowing years, the Dawson Block was completed and housed a

bakery, bank, millinery shop, a drug store, and many other businesses.St. Alberts Main Street was renamed Perron Street to recognize theimpact and inuence that Fleuri Perron had on the local businesscommunity and St. Albert as a whole.

Little White School House, originallyknown as Father Jan School, wasconstructed in 1946 and beganoperating in 1948. It was built by the Alberta government toaccomodate a growing student population aer World War II.Te design o the school is typical or its time. Few school houseso this era have been preserved as well, making it a signicant

building to the city.

Muse Hritage Museum

Discover how Albertas oldest, non-ortied community beganthrough exhibits, archives and collections. Te Museum islocated in St. Albert Place and houses permanent exhibits that tell thestory o St. Albert, rom its beginnings as a missionary settlement tothe vibrant city it is today. Te musuem eatures exhibits such as InFocus: Photographing Alberta and Montana Frontier (May 29th-August 19th, 2012), the St. Albert History Gallery, and more.

Te museum is located at 5 St. Anne Street and is open uesday -Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sundays 1pm to 5pm. Admission is bydonation.

Rockn August

Rockn August is an international car show and music estival held in thePerron District. With hundreds o classic cars on display and great music,

the week-long event is a major undraiser or Diabetes research and education.Each evening until Friday Nights Cruise and Street Dance, diferentlocations in St. Albert host classic car shows, community barbecues andmusical entertainment.

Friday night, the streets o St. Albert are packed with thousands o eagerspectators viewing the 400+ classic cars asthey parade past City Hall. Te party continues

as the stage is lled with some o the bestmusical entertainment o the year.

Te Northern Alberta International Childrens Festival

For over thirty years, St. Albert has welcomed some othe best international perormers in puppetry, music,dance, literary arts, acrobats and more. Te ChildrensFestival is a place where creativity, imagination, andlearning thrive throughout the Perron District and

eatures 90 main stage shows and 100 site perormances.

With events, perormances, and attractions throughoutthe week, children o all ages can learn through the artswhile having plenty o un, amilies can create lielongmemories, and the public can rediscover the child inthemselves. Te estival runs or ve days at the end o May.

Snowfake Festival -- Light Up St. Albert

Festivals (cont.)

Each year in the Perron District, St. Albert welcomes the Christmas Season

with the annual Christmas ree Light Up. At 6:30 p.m. the lights on the

big spruce tree in ront o the Community Hall are turned on to mark the

beginning o the estive season. Outside, the hall is decorated with an ice

sculpture and inside, amilies can nd Santa and activities like coloring,

gingerbread men decorating, and more.

Te Perron District is also busy with cras,

story-time, re perormers at St. Albert Place,

and live reindeer and wagon rides on

Perron Street. People are encouraged to bring

ood donations or the Fill-A-Bus charity, run by

St. Albert ransit drivers.
