Living Lives for Christ
To those loved and made new by our
Father God,
We have cost God the best He could give
and He keeps His loving eyes on each of
us with an everlasting commitment.
Though many take summer breaks,
vacations, and change routines, we are
never far from Him. That’s why we are
given the privilege everyday to thank,
praise, and serve Him in our ―daily‖
worship, work, and service. Though we
retire or reframe our lives, we are people
with a purpose and a passion found fully
and forever in Jesus Christ, God and
Savior. You carry your belief and your
belief carries you into every venue,
challenge, and scenario. And it is this
same belief that is influencing people in
our world; drawing them to sacred places
where the Holy Spirit creates saving faith
and an eternal relationship with Jesus
Messiah. What a blessing that He uses us.
St. Luke family: Take a break this
summer and enjoy, but don’t forget what
we are all about in Christ. The last chapter
of Galatians helps us maintain our clarity
and focus, regardless of age.
“My friends, you are spiritual. So if
someone is trapped in sin, you
should gently lead that person back
to the right path. But watch out
and don’t be tempted yourself.
You obey the law of Christ when
you offer each other a helping
hand. If you think you are better
than others, when you really
aren’t, you are wrong. Do your
own work well, and then you will
have something to be proud of.
But don’t compare yourself with
others. We each must carry our
own load.
Share every good thing you have
with anyone who teaches you
what God has said.
You cannot fool God, so don’t
make a fool of yourself! You will
harvest what you plant. If you
follow your selfish desires, you
will harvest destruction, but if you
follow the Spirit, you will harvest
eternal life. “Don’t get tired of
helping others. You will be
rewarded when the time is right, if
you don’t give up. We should help
people whenever we can,
especially if they are followers of
the LORD.” (Galatians 6:1-10, CEV)
Keep loving and sharing Him with others.
Don’t give up praying and believing! If
you can accomplish it with your strength
and skills, then where does God fit in?
Aim higher. Remember, “Nothing is
impossible with God!” (Luke 1:37,
CEV)
Believing in what God is doing and going
to do and thanking Him for the privilege
to partner with you.
Pastor Dave

“Show me your faith apart from the good things you do. I will show
you my faith by the good things I do.” James 2:18b
We talk a lot about faith. But, faith without action is no real faith at all. Each month I would
like to share with you ways in which we can live out our faith.
V.I.P.S. Program (Volunteers In Police Service) - Contact the Mesa Police Department
(480.644.2073 or www.mesaaz.gov/police) or see John Hollmann in the Church Office for
more information.
Helen’s Hope Chest—Volunteer some time and touch the life of a foster child. Helen’s
Hope Chest is right in Mesa not far from St. Luke. Caring people are needed to help out in a variety of ways. You can check
them out at www.helenshopechest.org, or see John Hollmann in the church office for more information.
Crisis Pregnancy Centers—We’re seeking volunteers in our Centers! If you would like to be a volunteer who makes a
difference in the lives of others, join us for our Volunteer Training Program on July 8-9 from 8:30 AM-5:30 PM @ the
Mesa Center (1818 E. Southern Ave., #13A). Please call Lorraine Robbins (602.508.3352) for more info or to register for
the Volunteer Training Program. See flyer on Ministry Board for more information.
How do you get to know someone
better? By spending time with them.
It’s the same way with God. We need to
spend time with him to get to know him
better. We can do that through prayer
and reading the Bible.
Make sure you
have a Bible
version that
you can easily
read. Then,
don’t be shy
about writing
or marking in your Bible. It’s a good way
to better remember what God has to say
to you. It may take some time getting
used to if you don’t already do it, but it’s
worth it!
You could also join a SMALL GROUP
BIBLE STUDY. That way you could
join with others in getting closer to our
Lord.
If you have questions or need some
help, don’t be afraid to talk with Pastor
Lindemann, Celeste, or myself (John).
We’d be glad to help.
Small Groups This month we will
be going to visit the
Mesa Historical
Museum, Friday,
July 30. We will meet
at church at 10 AM
and carpool over. After we tour the
museum we will go out to lunch
together. Cost for the Museum is $5
for adults, $4 for seniors 65 & over.
Please sign up on the Ministry
Board in the entryway to the
Worship Center. If you have
questions, contact John Hollmann
480.969.4414).

Billy Graham said about the next
author ―There is no writer in the
evangelical world that I admire and
appreciate more‖.
Disappointment with God by Philip
Yancey: Three questions no one asks
aloud—Is God unfair? Is God silent?
Is God hidden? Our feelings of
disappointment with God trace back
to a breakdown in that relationship.
God just wants to be loved by us.
Philip Yancey has written many books
with his first in 1977. He moved from
Chicago to Colorado where along with
writing, he hikes the mountains of
Colorado, and is involved as editor-in-
large of the magazine ―Christianity
Today‖.
The Helper by Catherine Marshall:
She became convinced that the
Christian walk is incomplete without
an intimate knowledge of the Holy
Spirit, or ―Helper‖ as Jesus called Him
in John 14. She wrote over 30 books
The featured books in the library
during July deals in part with the Holy
Spirit. There are many books written
about the Holy Spirit, and each of the
authors featured lived their lives
seeking and writing about the subject.
The Holy Spirit by Billy Graham:
Billy Graham wrote many books on
issues of interest to Christians. This
month’s book he wrote was like trying
to capture the ocean in a jar. This
book is meant to inform the reader
about the Holy Spirit and lead the
reader to a greater awareness of His
work.
before her death in 1983. Her most
successful books were ―A Man Called
Peter‖ which was made into a movie
and ―Christy‖ which became a TV
series in 1994.
Spirit of Power by Paul W. F. Harms:
He writes that when we look into the
Holy Spirit, we are looking into God
Himself—limitless, inexhaustible,
always more than words can say about
Him.

Since 1969, Americans have used Charitable
Remainder Unitrusts to benefit themselves,
their families and, ultimately, charity. Simply
put, you transfer assets into a Unitrust and
the Unitrust makes payments to you. This
transfer often allows you to increase your
income and enjoy tax advantages. When the
trust terminates, the remainder of its value is
distributed to your designated ministries.
Speak with your attorney or financial advisor
to create your own unitrust.
This information is provided to help you
create a Lifetime Giving Plan that provides
for the people you love and ministries you

I thank you for extending the call to be the Senior
Pastor of your congregation. It is an honor to
interview with your call committee, let alone be chosen
through prayer and the Spirit’s leading to be called as
Pastor of your congregation. As I begin my
deliberations I ask that you keep my family in your
prayers as I keep you in mine. I am confident that the
Lord will reveal his will.
This is an unusually busy summer for me personally
and professionally. I hope to visit you soon. I will be

**Bottled water donations can also be dropped off at the Phoenix Rescue Mission Family Outreach Center (3532 W. Thomas Rd., Suite 9, Phoenix).
The meeting was called to order by the
Executive Director, Jeff Rodemeyer. Pastor
Mark Friedrich, Circuit Counselor,
Mountain View Lutheran, Apache Junction
led the opening devotion. There were 99
members at the meeting.
The following Search Committee members
were introduced: Jeff Rodemeyer, Paul
Hoffmann, Gayle Householder, Stanley
Jackson, Susan Tonkin, Don Smith, Lisa
Lentz, Lisa Kobza, Doug Meckstroth,
Mickey Preston, and Ryan Brooks. The
committee has been working with the
Circuit Counselor since February 2010 on
securing possible candidates for St. Luke to
call as their pastor.
This committee reviewed the results of the
congregation survey conducted on
August 20, 2009, in order to find a pastor
who would fit St. Luke’s needs. The com-
mittee received a list of 15 names of possi-
ble candidates from PSWD President
Stoterau’s office. Most names were
submitted by congregation members and
some were added by the District. After
reviewing information on these candidates,
the list was narrowed to six possibilities.
This list was further narrowed to five when
it was learned that one of the six was
unavailable for a call at this time. Questions
from the committee were sent to all five
candidates and their responses were
reviewed. The list was then narrowed to
the top three: Pastor Brian J. Hetzel, Pastor
Scott F. Christenson and Pastor Ken D.
Lieber. The staff and Search Committee
conducted phone interviews with the
finalists. Biographical information for the
three pastors was circulated to the voters.
The Search Committee presented a
motion that St. Luke extend a call to
Pastor Brian J. Hetzel who is now serving
at Pointe of Hope Lutheran Church in Blue
Springs, Missouri. This was followed by
much discussion. It was moved and
approved to vote using a paper ballot.
Pastor Friedrich led a prayer before the
ballot distribution. The result of the
ballot vote was to extend a call to Pastor
Hetzel as recommended by the
committee. A motion was made and
seconded to make the motion unanimous.
Carried.
The following members signed to become
voting members: Lucille Wagner, Violet
M. Mahr, David Smith, Barbara Schrader,
Don Schrader, Mary Meyer, Sue Grefe,
Fred Grefe, and Mark Biegel.
It was announced that on Wednesday
mornings at 7:00 AM members of the
congregation are encouraged to join the
staff and leadership as they go out into the
immediate St. Luke’s community to pray
for the community, the church, and the
mission of St. Luke to reach out into the
community. Time commitment is short
and the staff and leadership will explain
what to pray for, whom to go with, and
where to go.
The meeting adjourned with the singing of
the doxology.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Kobza, Secretary
Voter’s/Call Meeting Minutes - June 13, 2010

As St. Luke’s reaches out and connects with the community by providing space
for several groups during the summer, you will notice a shift in where Bible
Studies and meetings are being held. During June, our facility was used by the
Association for Supportive Child Care, a nonprofit organization, who provides
training for individuals in the child care and early education field. During July

of God’s many gifts to be used in service of others. So use your gift well.” 1 Peter 4:9-10
St. Luke & the
Community!
Council Meeting Highlights - June 19, 2010 Website Update: Anna Horton, Tim Koscik and Ryan Brooks reported on the St. Luke’s website. The current website is costly and has limitations so they have been looking for a different host. They found two possible hosts: ―Joomla‖ and ―Clover‖. The Joomla host is very flexible and inexpensive ($10/month with no upfront fee), but might be too complicated for someone without experience. The Clover host would cost $1000 up front and $20/month. It has fewer options but is easier to use. It was moved and seconded that we give Anna and Ryan the authority to try Joomla, and if they judge it to be too difficult to switch to Clover. Carried.
Pastoral Call: The congregation voted to extend a call to Pastor Brian J. Hetzel at the congregational meeting on June 13. The call has been received along with a large amount of documentation about the church and an invitation to visit if he should choose. The next step in the call process was discussed.
Director of Children and Youth Ministry: Celeste Koscik has accepted a call and will be leaving St. Luke at the end of July. The Council discussed
what St. Luke will do in the interim. The Elders and Staff will work on a plan to bridge the gap for the immediate future. The staff, along with the help of some volunteers, will oversee the youth temporarily. Pastor Lindemann gave his assurance that educating the youth for confirmation falls on the Pastor’s shoulders and that the staff is equipped to teach the Word of God. Celeste has set up a good curriculum to follow.
Elders: It was noted that an Elder should be in attendance at each of the church services. Additional visibility by the Elders at the Oasis service will be helpful to assist in the various tasks that need to be completed.
Signage: A member has provided funds to update the church sign so that the service times can be changed as needed.
Financial: 1. The receipts in May were low, but are better in June. At this point the expenses versus income are about even. 2. An audit is being conducted. 3. Melvin Van Vorst has agreed to replace Nancy Cramsey in recording envelope donations into member accounts.
Business Directory: The feasibility of having a directory to list name, address and phone number for business owners who are members of St. Luke was discussed. We will put this in the bulletin and see if there is any interest.
Pictorial Directory: The status of the directory was discussed. Pictures can be taken between services by the library or members can submit their own candid shots to be included in the directory.
Pray for the Community: Staff and congregation members are setting aside time on Wednesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. to go into the immediate community to pray for the community, the church and the mission of St. Luke to reach out into the community.
The meeting adjourned with prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
