introductionBecause your company is dedicated to ethical business practices, we would like to invite you to reach a targeted audience of environmentally conscious consumers by advertising in Permaculture magazine.

With over 200,000 readers per issue, Permaculture is that rare thing, a magazine that is growing in influence. It is published quarterly and is available in the UK, USA and globally. As well as the print edition it has a growing digital readership which suits the smartphone generation, particularly via the Permaculture magazine iTunes app.

Permaculture features practical articles on organic gardening, agriculture, agroforestry, alternative technology, eco-architecture, personal and community development and much more.

It’s regulars - readers’ solutions, reviews, classifieds and courses - are also of significance to advertisers (courses and education bring significant numbers of new people to the field).

Permaculture’s presence in print and online (with 1.5 million page views a year) makes it a ‘must have’ networking tool for all green and ethical social enterprises and projects.

“In these critical times permaculture solutions are some of the best tools we have for creating a viable and thriving future.

Daryl Hannah, Hollywood actress

I greatly enjoy reading Permaculture magazine, and find your work very stimulating.

George Monbiot, author

Permaculture is an innovative way of creating sustainable gardens, houses, farms, communities, businesses and lifestyles.

Advertising in Permaculture magazine really works:

We placed an advert in PM and it was seen by an employee at the Mars Corporation. They contacted us and we won the job of designing two large corporate eco-buildings which kept us busy for over five years!

readershipPermaculture is published quarterly with 20,000 print and digital copies sold per edition (UK, USA and worldwide). The readership is made up of mainly 25-55 year olds.

People buy Permaculture because they have made the decision to live more consciously – an ideal customer for your company to attract. Our readers are active consumers of quality products.

The majority of our readers contact advertisers or attend courses and events which appear in the pages of Permaculture.

Our readers retain their copies of the magazine (and the growing success of the digital edition is helping this grow) using them as source material and a practical guide which informs their life choices and purchases.

Our readers shop for ethical purchases online. They also respond to reader offers that help them to save money while repairing the earth. Exclusive offers from trusted partners are hugely popular, be it discounts or samples.

Biochar is a new word for some thing very old. A charcoal soil amendment, it was first discovered

by the indigenous people of ancient Amazonia. They worked out that adding charcoal to the poor soils of the tropical rainforest enriched them and made them viable for agriculture. The ‘terra preta’, or ‘black soils’ they bioengineered still cover an estimated ten percent of the Amazon basin today. However, although biochar has been around for thousands of years, it has only recently become of scientific interest. In the face of climate change, we’re only just begin ning to understand its vast potential.

Biochar BenefitsScientifically proven to boost soil fertility, biochar also improves plant health and crop yields. Due to its sponge-like structure, it provides the perfect habitat for the beneficial microorganisms that allow the soil ecosystem to thrive and it keeps the soil

stable to ensure nutrient and water retention. But it does so much more than rejuvenate the earth at a microbial level. Biochar also ‘locks’ in carbon in the ground. Environmental leaders as disparate as Al Gore, Gaia Hypothesis originator James Lovelock, and NASA’s Jim Hansen have all cited the wide-spread addition of biochar to our soils as one way to curb runaway emissions.

I’m the land manager of a community-owned nature organisation in East Sussex called Sacred Earth. We’re big believers in biochar. We make our own biochar-based soil booster on our 16 hectare (40 acre) rural site, which is largely wooded. We manage these wood lands with coppicing and pollarding, and then use the leftover wood offcuts to make biochar in our on-site kiln.

To do this, we burn the wood slowly, with a restricted flow of oxygen, in a process known as pyrolysis. The fire is stopped when the material reaches the

charcoal stage (for more information on how to make biochar, see: www.permaculture.co.uk/articles/how-charge-biochar).

Biochar itself is great for the soil, but it’s what you add to it that really makes a difference. The exact recipe for the terra preta of ancient Amazonia is lost in the mists of time, but I have my own version, which I’ve honed over years. In my time, I’ve studied horticulture, arboriculture and biodynamic agri culture. I’ve tried adding a whole host of different ingredients to soil, but have come up with what I believe to be the ultimate trio of additions – on top of biochar. Each has a different function, providing particular minerals and nutrient bodies that engage with the earth’s microbiology.

Comfrey Tea Comfrey is an amazing herb. It’s like a superfood for other plants and the soil. Its leaves contain high levels of nitro gen, phosphorus and potassium. Indeed, its

Shift Bristol began at my kitchen table in 2009, the brainchild of myself and Laura Corfield. We had run a popular urban Permaculture Design Course (PDC) for

several years. Informed by my work setting up Transition Bristol as well as community gardening and the voluntary sector, we wanted to address the skills gap that so often stymied well-intentioned sustainability work. So we set out to produce informed, skilled individuals with the confidence and connections to create positive change. We devised a programme that expanded the PDC curriculum with a focus on collaboration and community engagement as so much of the learning comes from the group experience. As well as curriculum practicals the students take responsibility for the day to day tasks like tidying and organising transport. It turns out that working, learning and sharing together goes a long way towards building a resilient community.

The Practical Sustainability Course developed into a one year, intensive permaculture course run by Shift Bristol. It’s two and a half days a week for 39 weeks and 2019 is our ninth year in action.

Each year 27 students embark on the Shift adventure. They come from all backgrounds and ages (between 18 and 73 so far). Some students are already experienced in green living or working, many feel the need for a catalyst for major life or career changes.

The course modules sit within a permaculture design framework and include organic horticulture, soil and ecology, woodland management, green building, energy, community engagement, re-localisation, group dynamics, and creating change. Forty of the UK’s leading tutors and practitioners teach, lead practical activities or host field trips. We lay dead hedges in Ben Law’s woodland, marvel at Charles Dowding’s no-dig greens, explore the soil with Caroline Aitkin, time travel with Chris Johnstone, cultivate mushrooms with Rich Wright, wander Martin Crawford’s forest garden, compost with Nicky Scott and discover the realities of local food production with the mighty Jyoti Fernandez.

All practical activities happen on community plots. From water harvesting systems and willow sculptures to insulated

An Expert’s View

“Permaculture newsstand sales continue to grow, bucking the trend of falling magazine sales. This well produced magazine has continued to expand sales and create a niche in the market place and there are still more readers and sales to be gained.” Disticor Magazine Distribution Services

“I very much enjoy the magazine. It cheers me up no end by being inspiring and empowering, but most of all it is very reassuring and uplifting in these very worrisome times. I wouldn’t mind if it came out as a monthly, weekly - hell why not a daily magazine!
