What is PermaCulture?

“Permaculture (Permanent Agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of cultivated ecosystems which have the diversity, stability & resilience of natural ecosystems. What is a PDC Permaculture Design Course Certificate?

This 2 week 90 hour PDC has a full programme with designed in breaks and a day and a half free time. The essential 72 hours of the PDC is in there along with many other related extra topics and techniques that we have included due to the special interests and skills of the teachers and the particular setting of the Rio Aguas valley. The course covers the Permaculture Ethics, Principles and Design Skills, Basics of Ecology principles and design, at the same time as learning many practical skills, techniques and knowledge to design sustainable human settlements.

The residential format of the course and the convivial during the 14 days of stay, aloud an immersion in the permaculture teachings and makes it an unforgettable experience; an experience that for many has meant a change in the direction of their lives.

During these 2 weeks we will have the opportunity to experience Permaculture alive in our day by day, as we will be living in an off-grid low impact “eco” village Los Molinos. We'll be part of a community of teachers, participants and collaborators, creating spaces for inter-conexion, skills exchange and self organise workshops; and also spaces for dreaming and celebrating together!!

PDC courses have been taught since 1980 and thousands of people all around the globe have joined them.

You will learn skills in observation and reading the landscape enabling you to develop a deeper understanding of a place. You will learn about map drawing and interpretation, about understanding and using patters in nature to use in the designs; and why and how to take care of the soil, the water and the air.

You will learn how to design food production systems and water collection systems at different scales; bioregional strategies, forest garden growing, alternative economic systems, renewable energies and design of healthy homes and buildings, domestic liquid and solid waste treatment.

In the last part of the course the participants will do a design project based on the area where the course is happening.

With your certificate you will become a part on an international network of people that wish to make positive changes and you will have more experience and the knowledge to do it.

Methodoly and Course culture

The course will be facilitated using the latest knowledge and techniques on facilitaction and teaching, favouring different ways of interrelationship between the facilitation team and the participants; specially taking care of the different intelligences and diverse ways of learning to enable each person to learn in his/her unique way; to make it possible that each person uses and shares their own skills and wisdom, to create their own learning and share it with the others.

We'll be offering theoretical teaching sessions, discussions, power points, films, many different practicals (garden, personal design..), on land observation, individual, pair and group work, games, role plays, guided tours to other projects...; weaving theory and practice in order to create dynamic and participative sessions.

Our aim is to empower people with permaculture skills and knowledge and to make them feel confident enough to start to practice once they finish the course.

An important part of the course is the design. Participants will be working on personal individual design to apply to their own lives, projects, lands...And there will be the group design practical, that will help to ground the concepts learned during the course.

Certificate

Attending to the course (minimum of 80% of the course sessions) and participating in the design activity satisfactory, you will be awarded with the internationally-recognised ‘Certificate in Permaculture Design’. This Certificate will allow you to carry out Permaculture design works accredited for other people.

The teachers

Monika Frank

Aged 47, formed as a landscape architect, she lived in many countries and followed Permaculture concepts and projects since 1993. her travels in Southern Spain brought her to Los Molinos in 1998, where she was working the gardens for Sunseed Desert Technology.

After some years in busy Berlin, engaged in NGO-work for the global South, she is now living in southern France at the foothills of the Pyrénées, stewarding a (wild) piece of land and building up permaculture community in her area, the Ariège. diploma since 2008, teaching Pc since 2009, in three languages, her major concern is connecting people and places and raising self empowerment to "build a million villages" as said by Bill Mollison some 30 years ago...

Kirsty Heron

I love to work with my hands while talking about biological, human and planetary evolution. I seek active engagement of my whole being and design my life with this in mind. I have a passion for cultural renewal and ecological regeneration; living with permaculture has been a way for me to integrate these.

I have a BA in Politics and Peace Studies, Master Msc in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. I did my PDC in 2005 and that inspired me to learn more about growing food ecologically; this led to me doing a HNC in Organic Horticulture for 2 years, setting up an urban community food growing project, developing a forest garden and eventually coming to live in Almeria, Spain, at Sunseed (an environmental education project) where I was Organic Garden Coordinator for two years and Project Coordinator for one year. Now I am part of Cultura de la Tierra, organising and developing courses and workshops on everything from compost toilets, deep ecology, permaculture and wild fermentation of food.

I have been teaching permaculture for six years, and living and working in community for ten years. I am curious about what comes next for humans.I have lived in this beautiful valley for 4 years; I have learned so much from it and I look forward to sharing it with you.

Mark Biffen

Permaculture designer since 2009, Mark is co-creator of the permaculture project "Phoenicurus" in Cardedeu (Barcelona), which for three years produced seasonal vegetables using no-dig "natural" techniques for the cooperative 'Cardedeu Autosuficient', and which is now being adapted to a more perennial, resilient system based on Forest Gardening ideas.

Since its inception, "Phoenicurus" has also had a strong educational focus, collaborating principally with the school of self-sufficiency, 'Esbioesfera' (also in Cardedeu), as well as civic centres, youth organisations and 'Green Schools'.

Mark has also participated in two EU projects - European Urban Gardens Otesha, and European Permaculture Teachers Partnership; is active in the heritage seed-saving organisation 'Llavors Orientals'; has been involved in 'Permacultura Barcelona'; and is a founding member of the 'Cardedeu en Transició' group.

The venue

We will liven and do all the activities of the course in the “eco” village Los Molinos del Río de Aguas, in Almeria province, at 7km from the closest village, Sorbas.Los Molinos is an unusual village, it was repopulated in the 80's and is completely off-grid for power and water.

All the houses are solar powered and water comes from the river, many villagers have organic gardens and there's a high respect for nature.

In the daily life of the village we can observe Permaculture alive and in action, how permaculture aspects are lived and applied, from the house to the garden.Los Molinos is located in the Natural Park Karst en Yesos de Sorbas,a stunning pocket of biodiversity and a live oasis. The Valley will host us during these weeks, offering us wonderful spaces to learn, as well as to rest and enjoy the nature and the peace and flow of the river...

The village is home to several projects, such as: Sunseed, La Pita Escuela, El Mirador, Protect Ecuador y Cultura de la Tierra.

Protect Ecuador, Dave Dene is leading this project which aims to protect the Southwest area of Ecuador from the mining companies, in order to save the tropical

forest, its diversity and the indigenous populations that live there www.protectecuador.org. Dave is also involved with the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature therightsofnature.org

In the village there are also living several artisans.
